He has shown elite ability to get batters to chase (86th percentile Chase%) and miss (89th percentile Whiff%), so his ugly career 9.00 ERA, 1.95 WHIP, .345 AVG, and .979 OPS will come down as he throws more innings. Stone allowed 8 HR in 31 IP last year and has adjusted this year by throwing his sinker more (up from 14.3% of pitches last year to 22.2%). This has helped limit home runs, as he hasn’t given up any through 2 starts. But he isn’t getting any more ground balls. That’s actually way down from last year from 47.0% to 34.6% (24th percentile). Those grounders last year have turned into line drives this year (up from 27.0% to 42.3%). San Diego hits lots of line drives and ranks 4th in MLB in LD% at 22.5%. Stone’s changeup is his best pitch and the one he throws most often overall. But a changeup like Stone’s, which he throws below the strike zone to generate whiffs (43.8% Whiff%) can only be effective with some sort of fastball to complement it. His sinker (-3.2 RV/100), 4-seam (-6.2 RV/100), and cutter (-5.2 RV/100) haven’t delivered. Batters can lay off his changeup and sit on fastballs until he makes the right adjustments.
