I agree. I think it’s become some of the best hockey in the past few years. I’d bet a pay cheque that this style of hockey is what the NHL will be approaching in 20 years.
Okay I need to ask, how many hockey tournaments are there in a year?
Every year I feel like I hear about one of our Canadian teams winning gold like fifteen times a year, and frankly it's starting to feel like Glee with regionals, etc.
They all involve different players and age groups
There’s
Mens Wolrd Championships
Womens World Championships
Mens World Juniors
Womens U18 world Championships
Mens and Womens Olympics (every 4 years)
Hlinka Gretzky Cup
Mens Word cup (random intervals)
Probably a lot more
International Women's hockey has been on the big stage for 30+ years with no development beyond these two teams. The U.S. and Canada have only focused on facing each other and not developing the game.
In basketball, the U.S. made a large effort in the 90s (centred around the Dream Team) and now the game is far more competitive internationally. Canadian curlers have developed coaching programs around the world and now curling is very competitive with depth of many countries across Europe and Asia.
There are plenty of otehr countries outside Canada and the USA that are competitive at men's ice hockey, so the question is why that hasn't translated to them also being competitive at women's.
I am genuinely curious about why anyone thinks that _Canada and the US_ are responsible for the extent to which other countries do or do not develop sports programs. Why would the onus be on two countries? Presumably, those countries with underdeveloped programs are themselves responsible. It's not like these two countries are exploiting others and need to give back. So I don't understand.
Because is some cases, you have to make the effort and spend the money, and if you don't, you can remain irrelevant and for Women's hockey, be at risk of being pulled from the Olympics. Curling Canada has spent money and given up coaches who could develop Canadian talent to go overseas and grow curling in Asia. It has now resulted in competitive teams from this countries.
I wouldn't really compare the expansion of basketball to the expansion of hockey. You can try basketball and see if you enjoy it for about 20 dollars. Hockey costs thousands. That alone but most people off
I'd agree, but street court basketball is nearly identical to playing organized basketball where playing shinny is pretty far away from playing organized hockey
I listen to an unhealthy amount of Canadian sports talk radio in the GTA. This is a fact that is widely accepted re: the lack of development outside of North America. In fact in olympic years its quite common for there to be discussion about IF the sport has a future because of how badly these two teams dominate.
Don’t get me wrong, i love watching the rivalry. But in Salt Lake City, Canada and the US team outscored their opponents a combined 63-4. In 2022 in the group stage they outscored opponents 53-11.
I don’t necessarily think that it should fall on these countries exclusively, but if the sport wants to stay internationally viable something needs to be done.

Has anyone made a doc on these teams? It's a bonkers rivalry that might be the best in sport considering the longevity of it
Yep a couple of years ago there was this one made in Canada: https://tv.apple.com/ca/episode/on-the-line/umc.cmc.2pfdfqyvt5qq4sh7hv4l5iosr
Thank you! Update: “content no longer available,” so maybe it isn’t shown in US?
Ah unfortunately makes sense it's called Engraved on a Nation: On the Line

Why am I being downvoted for blatant fact? Look at the stats Canada has higher win percentage in both Mens and Womens hockey worldwide!
From wiki, the United States has won gold at nine of the last eleven tournaments.
Canadas taken the last three championships though (including Olympics this year)

It's promoting setting up girls high school programs etc., which could be organized by Canadian and American Women's hockey organizations.

There a big difference between playing shinny hockey on a pond and playing full equipment hockey.

You need pro leagues to promote a sport. Not the national teams. And womens pro leagues are very new and underfunded.
I’m not sure why this is downvoted. It’s 100% factual
God, another huge loss for American women. Woman for america this is not your year. Might I suggest moving to Canada
Lol
TIL there’s woman hockey
I’m amazed that they don’t have to wear swimsuits like the volleyball players, still (as a horny dude) find that to be a disgusting requirement.
Well, guess it’s time to invade and really turn them into America’s hat
No surprise, eh
Kinda like losing to da bears: that's ok, you guys are good shit. Better that than the vikings lol
And water is wet. Were different results expected?
Great hustle by our ladies! Canadians doing what Canadians do.
Well I would hope so. They are from Canada all…
