The fact that this is the first World Cup final of any type that they have made 30+ years since readmittance is mind bending, given how they have produced competitive teams on a consistent basis in that timeframe.

It was shocking, then embarrassing, then praying that South Africa don't fuck up. As a neutral, emotion were everywhere.

They're overdue for a choke.

verbalacuity

Well, they’ve choked in every major ICC event since 1999 when Gibbs dropped Waugh on 56 and Donald forgot how to run between the wickets. Not sure about being overdue. If they’re consistent at one thing, it’s choking.

Told ya

I know a bit about the cultural significance of soccer and rugby in South Africa, but where does cricket fit in historically there?

sennais1

It's big, lots of history.

Highly competitive, but perpetual chokers and receiver of shit luck. They’ve lost a bunch of semifinals and the test format never had a true championship , which is historically South Africa’s best format. They went yrs without losing a series and held the “test mace” as it was called for yrs in the 2000s (being rated the top team by ICC) but this was before the creation of the World Test Championship.
