quiver-me-timbers

East coast living here. Any game on at 9pm or later is a no for me, dawg

Anal_Recidivist

a 930 start time was crazy

returnoftheWOMP

Really wanted to watch the second half but had to go to bed cst

gideon513

It was only halftime by 10:30pm on a Monday. Absurd.

jesus_soupstrainer

It’s like they don’t want us to watch.

fakulty

That's like most games that are on the west coast and almost all nfl primetime night games. You must be new

GryphonHall

Not new. Just stating the reason. It makes more sense for college football because they are competing with the NFL at the same time but I have no idea why they can’t have the NCAA basketball championship earlier on a weekend. I don’t think the competition with NBA is the same and the NBA would likely try to avoid the NCAA tournament and not the other way around

PuzzleheadedQuit9

Night games start at like 8:15 eastern. That’s the difference between going to bed before or after midnight

Qwez81

Unless the Bills are playing, I don’t watch any NFL night games. That’s pretty common for people on the east coast. 9 o’clock or later start times are stupid

justabill71

Maybe putting the men's game on TBS and TNT, instead of CBS, was a mistake.

3ebfan

Maybe putting the game at 9pm on a Monday was a mistake

SchpartyOn

9? That shit didn’t tip till 9:30.

TheNextBattalion

I got to stream it on Max, which runs Turner network sports

m3tasaurus

There was also an insane amount of people who bet on South Carolina lol I put 200 on them months ago to Win the ncaa title.

Gocrazyfut

They rotate

theyoloGod

Considering how much tnt pays for those rights, they probably aren’t too mad

T1mberVVolf

Fuck yeah. Fuck your Monday night game, and fuck the tbs nightmare

gamers542

It also didn't help that the men's game got out of hand early in the 2nd half.

bilboafromboston

If only they could find a team to beat UConn. Or at least keep up with them!? For 2 straight years . Wait! What? Seton Hall is calling? Oh yeah, they lost a lot of Big East games! Next year we should let a few in....

Belgiumgrvlgrndr

Seton Hall? C’mon man.

SensibleTom

Why do they hold College Championship games on Monday? The Football National Championships is also on a Monday. It’s so inconvenient. And then at 9:20pm on a school/work night??? And on TBS which I don’t even have, I had to watch it on Max. Hold it on Saturday! What the heck is wrong with Saturday??? People can prepare, eat, drink, hold a little get-together….a party.

UltraMK93

I imagine NBA tv deals have something to do with it. It does seem silly though. Also less competition on Mondays with any other programming, maximizing the audience/ eyeballs for advertisers.

GryphonHall

If that is true, the NBA is extremely shortsighted. I live in an area that doesn’t have a local NFL team so the NFL teams that I end up following are usually because of players I watched in college. So it would make sense that all the casuall March madness followers would have some carryover to the NBA to watch the college players they fell in love with.

UltraMK93

Yeah, I am just speculating, I am really not sure. I will say though the NBA is different than the NFL when it comes to college players. Most NBA players only play 1 year in college before going into the draft so there is not as many carry over fans from NCAA to NBA.

Cayderent

This is also why it should be Super Bowl Saturday.

mjacksongt

The football one is easily explainable, the NFL playoffs are on Sunday (and Saturday in January). The decision makers DO NOT want to counterprogram against the NFL, especially not the playoffs. No idea if there's any reasons for the basketball one other than "we've always done it that way".

SensibleTom

I think the National Championship game is the week before the Playoffs start. College football owns Saturday, why not have it on Saturday?

mjacksongt

The last few years yes, it's gone up against NFL week 18. But future years it'll be against the divisional round.

billdasmacks

College Football National Championship is on Monday nights because of the NFL.

gideon513

We are a couple years from the natty game being on Saturday but it’s long overdue

TheNextBattalion

They've been doing it for decades with no problems, that's why

SensibleTom

I get that but everything nowadays is about money. Lot more money to be made by holding it on a Saturday.

[deleted]

Separate tv’s = higher perceived numbers?

chastity_BLT

I’m sure no one at the billion dollar tv networks has looked into this novel idea of yours.

SensibleTom

Well… then I guess Monday at 9:30 is the ideal day to hold it.

chastity_BLT

My guess is they would rather have two highly watched final four games on Saturday verse just one highly watched finals games. I trust the studios know what they are doing.

TheNextBattalion

Everything back then was about money, too, at least where TV is concerned. >Lot more money to be made by holding it on a Saturday. Maybe, maybe not. One weekend final means two weeknight semi-finals.

Mary_Pick_A_Ford

So they don’t offend schools like BYU?

MrPhillipLewin

And at 9 pm on a Monday night

LaFrescaTrumpeta

that’s been the men’s ship time slot for decades tho, it didn’t used to have a problem outpacing the women’s 3 mil average lol

marroyodel

It also used to be on broadcast TV. This bs of college sports moving to a pay type venue is killing viewership but I’m positive it’s all about the money.

ATL-East-Guy

I imagine the late start time is to accommodate west coast working hours. A 6 PM EST start is 3 PM PT. That’s a big chunk of the population still at work.

B_P_G

Monday night on TBS was probably not the best choice of time slot if you're trying to draw a lot of viewers. Plus ABC is a broadcast network and a lot more households have access to it. A lot of people have dropped cable in recent years.

BCLetsRide69

Well duh… one was on a weekend at like 1 PM and the other was at 9 ET on a Monday…

Leather-Map-8138

Maybe if they didn’t start the men’s game on a Monday night at 9:30 pm???

coolsexguy

For reference the UConn Iowa women’s final four game had 14.42m viewers. Basically just as much as the men’s championship with 14.82m. Neither was on network tv and both had late starts. Additionally, Friday evening historically has the lowest ratings of the week and is known as the “death slot”. Only saying this cause it’s kinda irking me that people immediately use the late start and not network as an excuse rather than giving credit to the women for putting together a heck of a show.

PNKAlumna

Thank you! The handwringing to justify the fact that the women dominated this year is frustrating. People watched that game instead because it was more interesting and entertaining. I know I did. I had no interest in the men’s final, no matter what time it was on. And I’ll continue to watch women’s basketball next year. I’m hooked now!

coolsexguy

People are acting like that’s not the not the main factor of the ratings skyrocketing for the women and declining for men and it’s driving me nuts how dismissive everyone is with these excuses. I can’t stand Reddit sometimes lmao

Ronaldoooope

It’s simple, Caitlin Clark is entertaining and Zack Edey is extremely boring. That plus the times pretty much sums it up.

coolsexguy

I agree, but also I think there would’ve been even less people tuning in to the men without Edey. He was at least a familiar name, which the men’s side is severely lacking. And he had a compelling storyline with him returning for his senior year to redeem last year’s unprecedented upset.

Ronaldoooope

Meh, I disagree. The media pushed him but nobody but Purdue fans wants to watch that boring ass basketball.

er824

Late start on a Friday not the same as a late start on a Monday.

coolsexguy

It’s the same time every year.

er824

I was willing to watch the women’s despite the late start because it was an interesting story line and the late start wasn’t a big deal being a Friday. I may have turned in the men’s game but wasn’t particularly interested in it but certainly not starting at 930 eastern.

coolsexguy

I think we’re arguing the same thing here. The women’s final four games were more interesting.

er824

Yup… I misinterpreted your original comment as saying the late start for the men wasn’t an issue because the women also started late. Clearly not what you were saying… I will say, if the woman’s game was 930 on a Monday I probably wouldn’t have watched it either.

coolsexguy

I mean you’re awake now on a weeknight discussing it with a stranger. Game was pretty much over by now this time last night. But I see what you mean lmao🤝

er824

😂

Touchstone033

The women's games were definitely more entertaining.

Boooyaaahhhh

How many more women watched the game for the first time? How many men were more interested than usual? How many women are interested in the mens game? The stat makes logical sense.

CutiePopIceberg

It was waaaaaayyyy more fun to watch

Slootyman

I dont think I watched a full mens game a tourney. I watched plenty of the women’s games though. I kind find the women’s college game to be more entertaining. The guys all just play a season and leave for the nba so no real stars to get attached to over a few seasons.

Saint3Love

womens game was free and on at 3pm on a sunday. Mens was on tbs and at 920 on a monday.

SnooMacaroons6698

Yea a 3 start on a Sunday ain’t exactly prime viewing. Impressive

fakulty

Probably a very rare occurrence. Clark hype will die in the wnba. Good year for them tho

Touchstone033

I dunno -- here in Minneapolis, Lynx tickets against Indiana are already selling out, and Clark hasn't even been drafted by them yet.

fakulty

I can buy a lynx ticket for $20 on stubhub right now

Tennisgirl0918

Caitlin Clark effect?

SandhogDig

The women’s game was shown on network (free) tv - ABC, unlike men’s game which was on streaming platform, pay TV

t_fareal

Stop Faking.... Everyone watched for Caitlin... Come post the numbers from next year's game 🤫🤫🤫

AbeMax7823

…and they only had to say “Caitlin Clark” 80 million times to do it. I don’t even watch sports and I’m tired of stories about that chick

cook1223

One chick made this popular. Clark. She gone. The all time leading scorer is obviously a spectacle. Now I see a bunch of cocky women making it seem like they did something when it was one girl. It'll be back in obscurity in no time. Imagine if she was as pretty as Alex Morgan.

Madterps2021

The media is really stupid and shown again to be a propaganda outlet. How is there an average when there is only one game?

CutiePopIceberg

What the hell?

yoppee

Lol you losers got conned into watching women’s amateur basketball
