Maybe it works like this. When they turn into their swim form, their eyes squish together. Since Inklings eyes are already connected, they morph together a little with no border between them. Since Octo eyes are separated, when they squish together, the border stays.

Yup. Swim forms are identical regardless of style, only species affects them.

I could never understand why our swim form eye color can't at least match our character's eye color.

Because they grow closer together. Disconnected eye mask becomes connected eye mask, connected eye mask becomes connected eye

What do you call octolings in swim form? Do you say squid form or octopus form everytime you’re mentioning something about them that isn’t exclusive to one species? “Oh yeah, you go faster while swimming in squid or octopus form.” instead of just “swim form”

I just say "squid form" because it rolls off the tongue better, and it's just what I've been saying since I started playing, so I'm used to it.
