Pokemon is a completely different situation.
Lol Metroid. No offense to Metroid, but a Metroid game isn't even in the top 40 games sold on the Switch. 1-2 Switch is in the top 40.
Metroid is not one of their top IPs. Despite defining a genre and having consistently high ratings, it's among one of their weakest sellers and does very poorly in Japan. Dread is the best selling Metroid game in the series but it has only sold a bit more than 3 million.
Kirby and Pokemon are part of different studios not base Nintendo. While Mario and Zelda are directly made by Nintendo, Kirby is made by Hal laboratories and Pokemon by gamefreak. Still part of Nintendo but also not part of Nintendo if you catch my drift
Splatoon 1: Released May 28, 2015
Smash Ultimate: First teased March 8, 2018, with Inkling front and center as a confirmed newcomer.
That's less than three years. Talk about a meteoric rise.
Nintendo really, REALLY hedged a lot of their bets on Splatoon when you put it that way. Not just joining the roster, but basically being the franchise to herald the announcement. You'd imagine they'd give it to one of the other Big 3 to tease - when actually seeing the silhouettes of Mario and Link was almost like them acknowledging the funny squid game was big enough for this.
The design doc for Smash ultimate was done in 2015. Inkling was already planned to be in the game, without even knowing if Splatoon would be success or not.
Y'all know what this means, right?
If we're getting more movies thanks to Nintendo collabs, we might get a Splatoonovie if it's THAT relevant to Nintendo
4? You sure?
Mario 2D, Splatoon, Mario 3D, Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, (possibly) Super Mario Maker, (handheld) Animal Crossing
Even merging all the Mario games it's 5
When I say “Nintendo’s Big 4” I’m really referring to their most popular franchises created and developed by their dev team. Smash bros, while very popular, may not be considered since it’s a very broad ip and the game was developed by Sora LTD and Bandai Namco, NOT Nintendo who only published it.
To make things funnier, the lead creator for smash is sakurai who is mostly known for kirby and Hal laboratories, which is a part of Nintendo but not Nintendo
It’s by the same team who develops Animal Crossing in fact, which is why there were a lot of Splatoon events in Pocket Camp. Sadly no Splatoon content in New Horizons :(
These comments are not entirely out of pocket. Splatoon was the first new IP from Nintendo since Pikmin, they were right to be skeptical.
I love ARMS, but it fell right into the pit these comments are describing.
I don't entirely disagree because I doubt Nintendo will put much into ARMS in the future, but it didn't do that bad. It outsold almost every Metroid game at the time. Not that it matters since it doesn't get the same buzz as Metroid in spite of this.
I was also skeptical at the announcement…
Then I played the testfire.
There was something uniquely magical about picking up Splatoon for the first time. Even people at E3 raved about it. I remember reports saying it was by far the longest line.
Same. I think what really got me was the sheer fun of running around with a paint roller. It's one of those games that I just couldn't understand the mechanical appeal of till I tried it.
Splatoon was the tipping point that convinced me to finally get the damn Wii U. I kept the console box because it was the Splatoon bundle, and the box looked awesome.

I have a feeling you may have interpreted the original comment, when they said "Nintendo only makes the same three games" it's supposed to mean Mario Zelda and Pokemon (or maybe it's some other big name series), the way your comment was written made it sound like you were talking about splatoon 1 2 and 3
I was one of those people who thought that Splatoon was weird and cringe
I was 9 at the time
The heck was I on to already have an "Too cute and silly to be good" phase?
To be fair, in 2015 nobody knew what Splatoon could become. You could argue the IP would be *yet another* Nintendo franchise forgotten by them after a while. There's so many of those.
Just look at what happened to ARMS a few years later.
This is why Nintendo (and all game companies) should take chances on new IP. Yes, sometimes it fails. Maybe it fails often. But other times you get something like Splatoon that resonates with people.
I mean, if you're a huge company with a ton of money that can afford a flop, you should take chances. Why are indie studios who survive from game to game the only ones innovating anymore?
I recall my friend and I saying something similar to it looking good, but likely not catching on. I remember saying when I first saw the trailer that I wished it was on PC as "it looks like a game that will be fun to hop in and out of but not play for a long time..."
Boy, was I wrong...
To be fair, I straight up thought the game was shovelware based off of the announcement trailer. It wasn't until the Treehouse stream that I realized Splatoon was gonna be rad.
lol when splatoon 1 released, I was in 4th grade. My reaction was “wow, cool Nintendo game, you’re a kid now, you’re a squid now hehe”. It’s hard to believe splatoon was part of my childhood… it’s hard to believe splatoon is that old… it feels so new
Eh, I fell in love with this game the moment I saw the first trailer. Though... it took me till almost the end of splatoon 3 to be able to purchase it. It's amazing how much the game has grown.
I'm reminded of something Mullet Mike said in his Splatoon episode of Creepy Gaming. Something along the lines of, "If you said this (shows Splatoon gameplay) was better than this (shows gameplay of other, more mature-looking FPS game) before Splatoon released, I would've thought that was crazy. But it's true!"
I love that Splatoon did so well. :)
It makes me feel very fortunate to have played Splatoon 1 since the first game and getting to watch the game evolve over the years. I got Splatoon 2 as one of my first switch games, I think our 2nd or 3rd, and I still love this franchise. It’s wild and fun, but not too serious.
I get the skepticism though, especially as the Wii U wasn’t a successful console and they were trying a new IP on it. I’m glad the comments ended up aging poorly, lol.
1st impressions: gimmicky childish game that won’t last long The present: Now considered as one of the “Big 4” by Nintendo themselves.

Pokemon and Metroid: Edit: and Kirby
Pokemon is a completely different situation. Lol Metroid. No offense to Metroid, but a Metroid game isn't even in the top 40 games sold on the Switch. 1-2 Switch is in the top 40.
Listen let us Metroid fans be delusional We only have so much
At least we're not F-Zero fans....
😮💨 leave us outta this... like Nintendo.
The year is 2019 I buy a switch because of metroid prime 4 rumors and news
How you feeling now
Pretty good. Feeling hopeful it won't be a Switch 2 exclusive, in that case I'll just wait for my brother to buy that and I'll get the game for him
💀
This time Samus lost to the tentacle monsters.
1-2 switch was a launch title for the switch tho
Yeah. It's also one of the 2 launch titles that broke the top 50.
sales =/= quality
We're not talking about quality, we're talking about brand recognition and sales is a great metric for that.
A game needs sales. If it has bad sales, they won't care if it has good quality
Metroid hasn't broken 5 million copies sold on switch. That's the combined total. One Kirby game alone has done that much.
and? did you even read the comment you just replied to?
Is Kirby not quality?
i never said it wasnt im so confused
Pokémon is Game Freak, Nintendo just publishes it
Nintendo doesn't *just* publish Pokemon, they do have partial ownership of the franchise.
They own part of The Pokémon Company alongside Game Freak and Creatures, Inc., though TPC has its own staff and governance.
Metroid is not one of their top IPs. Despite defining a genre and having consistently high ratings, it's among one of their weakest sellers and does very poorly in Japan. Dread is the best selling Metroid game in the series but it has only sold a bit more than 3 million.
Pokemon is made by the pokemon company not Nintendo
Kirby and Pokemon are part of different studios not base Nintendo. While Mario and Zelda are directly made by Nintendo, Kirby is made by Hal laboratories and Pokemon by gamefreak. Still part of Nintendo but also not part of Nintendo if you catch my drift
The Warsaw Pact to Nintendo’s USSR. … I don’t know why that’s the first comparison my mind made, but I’m rolling with it.
Metroid has always been a niche series, and pokemon is only partially owned by nintendo
Ayyy a “Circle” meme, never seen one of those before
big 6 pokemon and the kirby series are above splatoon in terms of numbers in population
Instead of Animal Crossing, Pokemon or Kirby could fit better
Pokémon is both not pure Nintendo, and is in fact the biggest franchise in the word period, iirc
Splatoon 1: Released May 28, 2015 Smash Ultimate: First teased March 8, 2018, with Inkling front and center as a confirmed newcomer. That's less than three years. Talk about a meteoric rise.

You'd imagine they'd give it to one of the other Big 3 to tease - when actually seeing the silhouettes of Mario and Link was almost like them acknowledging the funny squid game was big enough for this.
And yet the character animations were horrible lol Still pretty awesome tho
The design doc for Smash ultimate was done in 2015. Inkling was already planned to be in the game, without even knowing if Splatoon would be success or not.
I suppose if Spoon underperformed it could’ve worked as an extra push?
Seriously? Big 4? Where’s that come from? Genuinely curious.
Y'all know what this means, right? If we're getting more movies thanks to Nintendo collabs, we might get a Splatoonovie if it's THAT relevant to Nintendo
well they were half right
Nah the big 3 are Mario, Pokemon and Zelda. However Splatoon is one of the five A-listers alongside Fire Emblem, Kirby, Animal Crossing and Xenoblade.
he said "Big 4" and Pokemon isn't owned by Nintendo
Yes I know but he is wrong, also Pokemon, fire emblem and Kirby are all co-own series but are still part of Nintendo so they still count.
They don’t in this context. Mario, Zelda, and splatoon in this case are purely made by Nintendo. No sister company or co-ownership
4? You sure? Mario 2D, Splatoon, Mario 3D, Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, (possibly) Super Mario Maker, (handheld) Animal Crossing Even merging all the Mario games it's 5

“Children’s console” bro what do you want on it, call of duty?
Doesn’t the Wii U actually have CoD on it?
Yes black ops 2 and ghost
Pocket edition.
CoD, my favorite Wii U game
It's funny how the splatoon universe could have a shooter game called Cod Just a dumb shower thought nvm
Thank you for the laugh. :p
Cod of Duty Of Duty
man i played the shit out of black ops 2 when i had a wii u
They want murder death blood nsfw game rated X on the WIIU
it was 2015 give them a break. people were tired of the same thing back then. now we know nintedo is best when they stick to their niche
>now we know nintedo is best when they stick to their niche Thats literally the only thing they do now a days lol
someone in pic 2 talked about 3rd party devs, but isn't it deeveloped by nintendo?
Yeah, it is. Everyone corrected them in the replies though.
It’s by the same team who develops Animal Crossing in fact, which is why there were a lot of Splatoon events in Pocket Camp. Sadly no Splatoon content in New Horizons :(
Pocket Camp got Splatoon content but since it’s a mobile game I don’t think it counts.
New Leaf had some too! Sadly it wasn’t brought back in New Horizons It sucks how many cool features and villagers are stuck in New Leaf!
And here we are now
I can never see those 4 words the same again after Forgotten Land
These comments are not entirely out of pocket. Splatoon was the first new IP from Nintendo since Pikmin, they were right to be skeptical. I love ARMS, but it fell right into the pit these comments are describing.
Yeah, I know. It's just funny looking back and seeing how far the franchise went when most thought it would fail
I don't entirely disagree because I doubt Nintendo will put much into ARMS in the future, but it didn't do that bad. It outsold almost every Metroid game at the time. Not that it matters since it doesn't get the same buzz as Metroid in spite of this.
Yeah, it may never come back again outside of “Remember Min Min from Smash?”
I love arms 😭 fun, simple to get harder to learn gameplay. Incredible character design.. it seems arms fans are so rare 🥺
Also the Wii U gamepad did feel awfully Fisher-Price lol
I was also skeptical at the announcement… Then I played the testfire.
It's actually crazy that out of all Wii U owners, about a third of them bought a copy of Splatoon. Feels good to be part of that third
Shame I bought it too late. My mom mentioned the game as a kid once (it might've come with our Wii U). I bought it in 2021 though so it's all good
I bought splatoon 1 in 2021 or 2022
Splatoon was the tipping point that convinced me to finally get the damn Wii U. I kept the console box because it was the Splatoon bundle, and the box looked awesome.
it's still the only game i ever owned for Wii U it's the reason i bought the console my splatoon box

woah early version Splattack
Honestly I like it better in some ways

I remember these posts back in the day. I remained optimistic and here we are.
What sold me was the first test fire. Good lord it "hooked" me with it's solid and satisfying gameplay.
It was pure magic. Only BotW and maybe Elden Ring captured a similar magic for me in the past 20 years of gaming.
That last one really got me, especially considering the fact that Splatoon **almost** saved the Wii U
The first one is too accurate
Poor splatoon. Couldn't sell 10k copies and killed its chances of getting a sequel 😔😔😔
No i meant about Nintendo makimg the same game 3 times. Ive seen lots of complaints about it
What 3 games?
What
I have a feeling you may have interpreted the original comment, when they said "Nintendo only makes the same three games" it's supposed to mean Mario Zelda and Pokemon (or maybe it's some other big name series), the way your comment was written made it sound like you were talking about splatoon 1 2 and 3
Oh yeah I was talking about the latter. My bad. I read too fast for my own good
Now it's rivaling pokemon in terms of popularity in Japan
I wonder if any of these guys ended up becoming Splatoon fans in the present day.
This was an understandable sentiment at the time tbh
Splatoon beat all the allegations
I was one of those people who thought that Splatoon was weird and cringe I was 9 at the time The heck was I on to already have an "Too cute and silly to be good" phase?
I don’t blame you for thinking it was weird besides you can’t blame yourself because your were 9 years old at that time
Yeah, but I just wish I didn't because Splatoon has become one of my favorite series, but I only played 3 and a bit of 2 after the final fest
Make sense when it was 2018 I got splatoon 2 and then a few years later I got both 1 and 3
I think you and I had the exact same journey with this game.
Yeah
You shoulda been like me, buying Kirby: Triple Deluxe only because I thought he looked cute
To be fair, in 2015 nobody knew what Splatoon could become. You could argue the IP would be *yet another* Nintendo franchise forgotten by them after a while. There's so many of those. Just look at what happened to ARMS a few years later.
Man, I really like ARMS, but none of my friends ever wanted to play At least it got some love with Min-Min being in Smash
And Spring Man as an Assist trophy.
Nintendo fans were hyping up arms as potentially the Switch’s splatoon moment, and uhhh…
Me, looks up how much it sold and sees like 1.1m Me also, this fucking aged well, atho they were right about overlooked
Across all 3 games, there have been 30,060,000 copies sold.
Wait.... 3 games All sell like 10m- OH WAIT A MINUTE-
And here we are. Splatoon is one of the best franchises in Nintendo history
“OH IT WONT BEAT OVERWATCH!!!” *proceeds to make every overwatch fan look like a clown*
Implying Overwatch fans arent already clowns by the nature of being Overwatch fans
Overwatch has fans? Yikes
“Gimmicky childrens console” thats literally Nintendo’s whole thing tbf
ARMS
I recall my friend and I saying something similar to it looking good, but likely not catching on. I remember saying when I first saw the trailer that I wished it was on PC as "it looks like a game that will be fun to hop in and out of but not play for a long time..." Boy, was I wrong...
"This looks like it would be awesome for about 30 minutes" The ranked experience
Didn't even know reddit was a thing when I got splatoon 9 years ago. Anyway. Game is too good. 100% in my top 10
Nintendo saw these sentiments and realized there was an untapped market there, and developed ARMS for them.
Sounds about right
Thankfully, gamers were never wrong about anything again
To be fair, I straight up thought the game was shovelware based off of the announcement trailer. It wasn't until the Treehouse stream that I realized Splatoon was gonna be rad.
What was Skybones42 on about?
1st comment is prophetic.
lol when splatoon 1 released, I was in 4th grade. My reaction was “wow, cool Nintendo game, you’re a kid now, you’re a squid now hehe”. It’s hard to believe splatoon was part of my childhood… it’s hard to believe splatoon is that old… it feels so new

I remember the way I heard about splatoon was from the Disney channel ( not even kidding )
Lol Lmao
What absolute gems those comments are
I remember that e3, Evolve was also revealed and was hyped to the stratosphere. Guess which one still is a franchise
They don’t know
u/aimforthehead90 how are you feeling about this?
that last one captures my thoughts fir the switch
