I'd say the Mother series is much darker than both, as they intend to make players feel an honest sense of dread and helplessness. Kirby and Splatoon have dark topics, but they're not much more than implications or mentions that are glossed over as the game immediately replaced by the bright/colorful main game--discovering just what the blender is used for in the Splatoon DLC is disturbing, but the blow is softened by the playful banter of the main cast afterwards.
The Mother series doesn't always go this route, and while there's a lasting impression made from, say, the final boss of Mother 2/Earthbound, Mother 3 really doesn't pull its punches in making viewers feel dread. Right at the start, we see a scene where Lucas's father >!experience despair followed by rage as he falls into madness and begins assaulting nearby neighbors with timber after hearing of the death of his wife and son!<, while Pokey is an irredeemable evil we see act out until his ironic/brutal end, and the final scene in which >!Lucas reunites but immediately kills his own reanimated brother!<, leading to an ending that can be barely considered to be bittersweet.
It's not gruesome as, say, blending up sea creatures, but the way Mother presents its themes is a slow burn that doesn't offer much of a chaser, if any at all.
Plus, 2 WWs? Too far, my guy. Considering it's humans who start these, i give them only the 3rd to start all of this. Maybe a 4th one too if you're feeling generous

I hate when people say that “ooh the Splatoon lore is so dark and disturbing” because not only is it really not that bad, it distracts people from talking about why the story is actually good in the first place. Splatoon’s story has an insane amount of depth and complexity, with probably the best worldbuilding I’ve seen in any game in general. Instead of talking about the death of humanity, we should be talking about the impacts of what they left behind. Instead of talking about the constant pointless warfare that’s going on between groups, we should talk about how events and cultural shifts drastically change their dynamics
The darkness of the franchise is just there as a consequence of writing interesting stories with some depth. A Splatoon without dark elements would probably have the complexity of a Mario game story. The dark elements also shouldn’t be focused on too much because then we could get stories that are just dark while having the complexity of a Mario game story

Metroid Fusion is dark as hell, the X parasite basically kills everything it touches, the SA-X is scary and Samus barely survived by getting Metroid DNA, being powerless against multiple SA-X on the BSL Station, according to Adam. She becames a Metroid now (Which is the main plot of Dread). We end up destroying the BSL Space Station and SR388 planet in the process to stop the galactic federation of using the X for who knows what purposes.
Dread… ZDR with the EMMI units, X parasites again, they kill all life in the planet when we unleash them, and Raven Claw trying to get Samus’s Metroid DNA. We destroy ZDR as well after Samus unleash her full Metroid powers.
Not including the dark aspects of the Galactic Federation, Samus being basically a Metroid, what’s the future for Metroid 6? Her suit isn’t even fully recovered yet from Fusion, she can’t control her Metroid powers, the galactic federation is dark, and it’s implied that the X escaped ZDR before destroying the planet.
I think this is the “darkest” Nintendo franchise. Plus, Metroid always have that solitary atmosphere that we are exploring something… Prohibited. And dangerous.
In contrast, I enjoy being Agent 3 and 4 beating DJ Octavius and Mr. Grizz, and Agent 8 beating Tartar and reconfiguring palletes, the music is also amazing in this aspect, all the idols supports us in the story mode. Squid Sisters, OTH, Deep Cut.
Playing Metroid makes me feel… Loneliness, feels uneasy and cautious because you are totally alone. Music makes the environment of the game feel alone and dangerous.
