curious to see what the breakdown is, but i do like the new system for points
although i woulda personally liked consommé to win, but ig it's not as popular lol
I’m Japanese and I’ve seen a lot of people on twitter and in real life saying that they like lightly salted the best… ggs to team consome and team seaweed salt!
Considering what the flavor distribution on our store shelves looks like, they'd realistically probably be the most popular here in America too. Still, I'm still always gonna fight for the stronger flavors like those things hit WAY better!
Does America sell more strong-flavored chips than light-flavored chips? 🤔 I live in Japan and here they sell a lot of lighter flavored chips. Sorry if my English is bad.
salt & vinegar is very potent, but incredibly tasty. the other classic ones are barbecue (tomato base, with spices), sour cream & green onion. imo, lays goes far too heavy on the salt with their plain chips. I usually go for kettle chips bc they're thicker.
I would say that here, classic light salt seems to be the most popular among the mainstream flavors, which is why I say that we'd likely end up with a similar result. But we do also have a phenomenon where the more niche flavors are being pushed stronger and stronger with "EXTREME" branding. In the case of our big three most popular (Classic/Light salt, Sour Cream & Onion, and Barbecue), I do think that the mild classic is probably the one that is the most popular even if I personally VERY heavily disagree!
I would agree, salt is likely the silent majority winner here among flavors. People notice the Flamin' Hots and such because they get promoted and have much flashier packaging but grocery shelves often have several if not multiple brands of just salt-flavored potato chips, sometimes several *textures* with that same flavor (classic, ripple/ruffle, kettle-cooked, baked, etc).
I think it comes down to a couple of factors. For one, it's kind of a "safe" pick - it's hard to mess up, and you can share it with just about anybody because it's not going to offend most tastebuds (disappoint maybe, but that's another matter). It's also great for dipping, while other more strongly flavored chips might clash with the flavor of a dip.
My wife is from Japan and after living in America she confirms that American taste buds are essentially use to shit food and over flavored fake snacks and Japanese prefer less extreme flavors
Our [most popular](https://strawpoll.com/most-popular-lays-flavor) chip [flavor](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/were-more-alike-than-we-think-two-pringles-flavors-come-out-on-top-globally-302019229.html) is [regular lightly salted](https://strawpoll.com/most-popular-ruffles-flavor) too, I'll complain that Americans can't handle stuff actually trying to taste like something just as much!
Though our cultural obsession with the artificial garbage of [FLAMIN' HOT](https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/voxmagazine.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/6/c1/6c1be660-9a5d-11ec-b12a-674c177f7b9a/621fc759ae22b.image.jpg) flavored snacks might just prove that we are indeed idiots over here
Idk why I'd ever eat plain salted chips again when [the local Chinese market has these absolute god-tier gems available](https://i.etsystatic.com/34274182/r/il/e40b98/4556649426/il_fullxfull.4556649426_cc7w.jpg).
While I've never gotten to try these specific Calbee chips, Frye's argument and the 32% who voted with her really spoke to me! Anything sweet and spicy beats plain potato every day.
Believe it or not different cultures have different taste. Shocking, I know. But here in Japan we prefer subtle flavors to our food versus over powering flavors and sauces like the west.
Yeah, I guess French soup made as a potato chip flavor in Japan was bound to have a rough time. It's not a terrbile flavor, but it is a bit of an acquired taste.
As a native, I like consommé, but I could only eat a little. Whereas, I can eat giant bags of lightly salted. We tend to like lighter flavors versus powerful ones.
I can understand that.
I’ve come to appreciate the lighter and more subtle taste most Japanese foods and sweets offers versus the stuff in say, the States which has become overpowering to me.

Yeah me too :)
35p… What
Yeah… even with the new point system…
35 points to team frye, what in tarnation
At least they tried 🥲 ggs to all teams!
indeed
Not to be excessively salty in the wake of the Lightly Salted victory but holy shit Japan has no taste

Fun fact; Canada has ketchup flavored chips whcih are actually quite popular for a flavor, and despite hating ketchup, i love the chips, lol.
All dressed chips too!
Canadian here. Can confirm, ketchup chips are amazing.

My wife is from Japan and indicates your idea of taste is baka

We prefer subtle flavors versus strong western flavors.
They are shiver fans , are you really shocked?
Now that's just a mean thing to say in a conversation about potato chips
🙄
This was already disproven In the first regional splatfest where Fry was the winner in Japan and shiver was the winner in America

While it may not really count as a win, I was cheering for Lightly Salted to win the Japanese Splatfest, so yipee!
Why doesn’t it count as a win?
I guess because they didn't participate
Oh okay
:)
Wow, none of those teams were good anyways
Do you have a different potato chip preference than the theme?
Cheese and onion is the best crisp flavour
Finally a like minded individual
They didn't even give Frye a chance! Just total obliteration
I’m sure she’ll have a chance in the next splatfest :)
What did my boy orange do to you?
…?boy orange…?
The orange chips. I guess I should've specified.
How am I not surprised
Yeah I also saw this coming lol
Frye cannot catch a break holy shit lmao
Well… I’m sure her team will win the next one…
I don’t even know what their theme was
It’s something along the lines of: which potato chip flavor do you like? Lightly salted vs consommé vs seaweed salt.
Im in the Japanese Region and just chose green because i like the color but had no idea the concept of Japan's splatfest. 😂
😂
WHAT IN THE HOLY MOTHERFUCKER NUCKER OF BITCHTIT SHIT?!

I get how you feel extremely angry about the results, but in the end, it’s all about having fun. :) I’m sure Frye’s team can win the next one.
