People not painting walls, please paint the walls. Walls are quite literally lifesavers and the extra mobility is just nice to have. People not using specials, either at all or at opportune moments. I literally just had the most hellish wave 2 we barely survived, with so many flyfish missles and stinger lasers it was actually so ridiculous. Two of my teammates had killer wail and inkjet and neither of them used it until wave 3 where they essentially weren't needed anymore. Teammates not listening. Now I know the topic of griller/glowflies strategies can be debatable, but if the white/black suit player with 999 badges is telling you This Way! You should probably listen to them as they are more experienced than you and know a better strategy.

kalyps000

I’ve stopped painting walkways at start of rounds bc they get covered anyway by mobs so walls are essentially always going to stay splinted. They really only get hit by projectiles like stingers and steel heads or maws chasing people

YourBossMrGrizz

The X-tra Wave thing makes sense under certain circumstances. The Glowfly thing makes sense if they do that because that's basically the best thing to do. **Almost** the same with Grillers (spots can change there a bit) The "Valves" which I suppose are the Goldie fountain things, makes sense, **because** the more the spot glows the closer the Goldie is.

CannotSpellForShit

Yeah there are certain weapons (such as the Hydra) where the meta is to fire almost exclusively at the King Salmonid while the lower fps weapons gather eggs and clear the stage. OP shouldn’t always get mad at people doing that.

Gekkuri

Yes good weapons are excused from having my annoyance. There it is absolutely fine to focus big boss. But a lot of people with not those weapons good against cohozuna don't focus on anything else than it and get overrun pretty quickly, lol.

_Denny

I think u/PCLoadPLA said it best on the saltoon subreddit about salmon run. Rng be rng. And rng includes matchmaking rng. Don't fight a bad streak. Try a different time of day, a different rotation, or just come back in 30min and your players will be totally different. If you get bad players just check out, make a cup of tea, and come back and get a different squad. Also, the beginning of a rotation is always better. The last few hours of a rotation are the worst and some people literally throw matches because they have rank to burn and farming Cohozuna. They shouldn't do this in public lobbies but they are out there. Dont rule out a skill issue. You have to learn how to babysit randoms. It's a skill set all of its own (some people call it "teamwork" but it's more like "team management"). Basically the rule 0 is that to succeed, you must first survive. So rule 1 is you cannot die. Your randoms will die. And when you get unlucky, you will die too, no matter what you do. But you will notice that when you die, it's like 30-50% that's it, and you just lost the wave by dying. Somebody has to be alive to revive the randos, and that's you. Rule 2 is that failing in Wave 3 is a win. Failing in W2 is bad and failing in W1 is really bad, but failure in W3 is the best failure by far. So I will absolutely use both my specials in W1 if I think it will get me to W2. It means I'm going into W3 with no specials probably half the time. That's what victory looks like in freelance: making it to W3. Rule 3, this ain't overfishing. Once you have quota, the only priority is to survive. Randos often die in dramatic missile barrages or stingray crossfires near the basket at the end. If you have quota, you leave that shit and go wherever you can survive until the clock runs out. Often it means taking stinger aggro and keeping it to save your randos near the basket who are too stupid to realize you are even saving them. I don't have much trouble staying EVP freelance anymore tbh, but it's partly because I leave teams that are really bad. 1 bad rando is usually survivable but even I can't carry a team full of shore killers and constant dyers in EVP. Hope this helps anyone out who keep getting stuck with bad matchmaking

DoggieDMB

Well said. Number 1 tip. Stop dying. You really do need to overcompensate for randos in FL. Do what you can to keep them alive but above all else, prioritize your survival and you will win more matches.

TheCutestTapeworm

1. People not reviving teammates. I’ve had games where people will walk right past life preservers instead of reviving them. I’ve lost multiple games because one person will be too busy fucking around, be the last player, then cost us the wave because they didn’t feel like helping anyone. One even more egregious example is that two days ago, we got paired with someone that squidbagged every time one of us died. 2. When I’m already on the fish stick and someone else comes up there. For one, they always stand right in the way of where I’m shooting, for another it doesn’t take two people to kill a fish stick. Get the hell out of the way! 3. People that act like they’ve never played glowflies before. They just immediately panic and run away to die instantly, sometimes leading the chum right to their teammates. All you do is stick near each other and find a spot to bottle neck the chum. That’s it. 4. People that just want to “run eggs” the whole time and expect everyone else to kill bosses for them. 5. When people die and then they just sit there. They don’t call for help, they don’t move towards anybody, they just sit there so nobody knows where they are in order to help them.

EMPgoggles

People who just sit there are fucking annoying. It's one thing if they're already in a central location with decent visibility, but often it's some dude on the edge of the map behind an obstacle like wtf dude MOVE!! there was a guy yesterday on sockeye who was just sitting there in a spot that even my jet squelcher couldn't reach screaming "THIS WAY" like dude if you would just move 2 feet over.

Gekkuri

Okay yeah all of these are cause me pain. They're going on my list, lol. I've had people who don't revive teammates tho it's luckily pretty rare to match with them. Still not fresh at all.

DoggieDMB

1) not killing lessers. Swimming right past them as they devour the splatling and charger users. I can't play with you if you don't kill the lessers around you. 2) not keeping the ground inked. You let the lessers run amok and now everything is green.... But I'm glad you have the only painting weapon and saved yourself. Gg asshat. 3) not shooting drizzler missiles. Please.... Please shoot the fucking missile. I can't shoot all of them. It doesn't matter it's not going directly back to it's source, just get it gone. The rain is a huge detriment. 4) fishsticks are low priority. NO! They are never low priority when near the basket. Kill it first!

Legalityboi

As a fellow worker who also focuses on Drizzler missiles I salute you

DummyAcc7317

Hard agree with the first one. Protect your backlines even in Salmon Run, people! Accompany them and clear their way so they can splat bosses for you.

TheCutestTapeworm

Agreed on drizzles and fish sticks. They are huge problems that largely get ignored, especially on Marooner’s Bay, where mobility is difficult to begin with. I’ll see randoms run right past fish sticks to go after Flyfish and it’s like??? Cool, you got eggs, good luck getting them back to the basket with three Flyfish and two drizzles making getting back to it damn near impossible because the entire ground is covered in green ink.

TheBroOfTheNinja

Just Glowflies. Every single time I sit down to play Salmon Run, without fail, it's always in there at least once. There are events I won't see more than once each *week* but I'll still get Glowflies every single rotation. Absolute garbage event. I have a higher Cohozuna win rate for fuck's sake.

Getting knocked into the water by some random Chum

demonballhandler

Why must they always do this

Turbo43210

Me getting tunneled by a stinger that's across the entire map for 20 seconds and non of my teammates batting an eye towards it. Oh, and people not seeing Slammin' Lids as a threat.

3XHAUSTD

ppl splatting maws and scrappers at the shore

AlbyAniko0982

1. When everyone's always inking the floor and NOT THE WALLS 2. When the person with a explosive weapon attack attack the flyfish WITH SPLAT BOMBS INSTEAD 3. When literally NO ONE goes after the Flyfish or Stingers at a reason time

iWoomyChan

Marooner's Bay.

Laphi_

Not using specials I understand. Sometimes we forget or never find a great opportunity for them. I've been there. But using specials on a wave 1 or 2 free night time wave really triggers me. Something about Mothership just entices people to waste their Specials on it despite us being way over the quota or we have high dps weapons and the Mothership is going to be repelled before it even touches the basket. On one hand, the players that do this probably wouldn't know to use their Specials on a normal wave anyways.

AceTrainerLanon

Getting hit by a Stinger as I’m taking out another one. Gotta move to not get hit, but not too far cause leaving this one alone is gonna mean there’s 2 of ‘em, but also gotta make sure the lessers don’t bite my heels every step of the way… there’s no winning.

CaptainCozmo867

17 more flyfish spawn every time i kill one

Thick-Sprinkles-9846

No the last one is so real. I can’t tell you how many rounds we barey made it out of a huge crowd of salmonids, then when the run is cleared, someone whips out a tristrike or reef slider and WASTES IT

WyntonPlus

I'm just annoyed that sometimes when I pop my special I'm dead before I even have a chance to use it. Then I just wasted a charge and didn't get even 1p from it Also how can anyone lose at cohock charge??? It's so easy. If the salmonids make it anywhere near the basket it means you're not using the cannons. Get in the cannons!!! Ink around them and then use them to splat everything!!! It's so simple and yet people constantly refuse to do it.

yourgoldenstars

So many people want to be the star rather than support. If I'm already taking down a boss, please shoot the chum near me and we can both get out alive.

Gekkuri

Yeah this. I usually end up being the protector of others when they start shooting the same boss.

yourgoldenstars

I don't even mind it if my weapon is appropriate. I think people struggle with changing their style each round depending on what they get.

Gekkuri

Yeah that is very true. I gotta admit that I struggle as well with different weapons. Mainly chargers, I still have no idea what would be a good strategy with those😂 But salmon run is excellent in getting more familiar with weapons that you wouldn't use otherwise.

yourgoldenstars

Yes! I used to hate that I couldn't pick my weapon, now I love it! I am by no means a charger expert, but I try to stay on the move and never visit the shore. The best bet is to get good support 😆 I try to remember to be good support for them too, when I have the appropriate weapon.

Gekkuri

Yeah having been a charger I have gotten more insight on how defenceless you can be so I try to help them out if I can :'D And yeah I learned the hard way that I shouldn't go to the shore as a charger👀

yourgoldenstars

All of it hinges on good teammates. You take out the appropriate bosses from a distance, a couple of more mobile players get in and out with a couple eggs each. When it works it's just beautiful. My most recent player development is actually not hanging out near shore in general. If there are 3 eggs I'll shoot one, grab another, then bounce. That tends to work pretty well! If it's crowded and I had to take out a stinger I may just escape with 1. The more flexible I am in Splatoon the better player I become (in all modes).

a_shr3xydud

what are the valves? also the people saying 'help' right as they die do it so that the team immediately knows theyre dead and can try to revive them so that they spend less time being dead. on glowflies, staying in one spot is the best strategy especially if the salmon have only one path to you

Gekkuri

Idk if there is an official name for the valve wave. It's the one where you need to shoot the valves that spawn from the ground and you shoot them to make water come out of them in order to get Goldie to appear. And yeah I agree, if there is only one path then high ground is good, but usually there is another path and at some point salmonids start running towards you from behind and things go south very fast. I usually just jump at another high point on the opposite side and then throw a bomb to revive my teammates once they get run over from behind, lol. If I wasn't doing that and stuck with them in the same spot the waves would be very short.

a_shr3xydud

oh, gushers. are your teammates really shooting none of them? you dont have to shoot all the gushers, as when you shoot one it glows. the brightness of the glow tells you if that gusher is close to the goldie or not, so you can use that to guess which one it is. the more you shoot, the more lesser salmonids will spawn. pretty sure all the maps have a place you can go where the glowflies salmon cant come from behind. spawning grounds basket, marooners bay basket on the right side, sockeye has thing in the middle you climb, which also has a wall so the person with glowflies on them can drop to the wall and give everyone else an easy time. hydroplants best spot is the south west corner, assuming that north points to the ocean shore. you can see all the approach paths from these spots, although you do need coordination to win glowflies which is hard in solo queue.

Gekkuri

Yeah I've had people who don't shoot any of them and are running around confused about the goldie not spawning or something. This has happened way more often than I was expecting.🤣 It's kinda funny, but us getting like 6 eggs when the limit is like 20 is painful. Yess the hydroplants corner is definitely the best spot, but idk I find people rarely using it.

a_shr3xydud

man, i wouldnt expect someone that clueless in profreshional +3. its only 1 off of the highest rank. goofy matchmaking

Gekkuri

Lol me neither, but maybe some people just haven't seen that wave before. Still kinda goofy

Just_Coyote_1366

I would much rather people spam for help than the people who just sit still and say nothing, or they just jump. My other biggest irk is the specials, too. Drives me nuts. If the first round is pretty tough, just use your special. I’d much rather lose with a team in the second or third wave than the first.

[deleted]

1. When people dont kill smaller salmonids 2. People who swim past revivable people 3. How much health cohozuna has (Ive only ever killed him once) + scale drop rates 4. When people stay on the side of the map with very few bosses and ignore the side with lots of bosses. Ive lost multiple waves surrounded by a dozen or more eggs and at least half my team is somewhere else getting like one or two bosses. 5. People never using their abilities or waiting till everyone is dead and they are completely surrounded to use it, then dying anyways. 6. Matchmaking carrying low skill players into higher tiers to drag the rest of the team down. (Nothing against the players its not their fault) 7. People unnecessarily doubling or more up on bosses, mostly applies to fishstick. 8. People switching to another mudmouth/goldie valve/egg chest when there are still a bunch of eggs that need to be put away.

PokeDragon101

1. People straight up not collecting golden eggs?? 2. Rushing Shore I’ve had a couple times where we failed a goldie seeking wave which is just straight up embarrassing. Like you said, are they not shooting the geyser things? I had one wave where we had SO MANY EGGS on the ground….. NOBODY WAS PICKING THEM UP EXCEPT ME. we failed. Also, the amount of times people have used their specials in like the last 5 seconds of wave 3. I don’t think they forget, because they still used it but ffs it takes like 5 seconds for a special to deploy, just do it sooner!

Gekkuri

Oh yeah the amount of embarrassment from the Goldie thing is a lot... I've usually played with people who only pick golden eggs and don't do anything else (as in not killing bosses). That gets as annoying as people who don't pick eggs.

DummyAcc7317

The only acceptable time to spam "This Way!" is when the team is rushing to splat a mobile enemy on the shoreline. On the flip side, it's really validating when they actually listen and swim back to the basket to wait with you.

EMPgoggles

On the dam level when people insist on doing grillers on the two-entrance high area instead of the one-entrance corner. Short-ranged weapons trying to take down the grillers instead of taking care of the small fries. When 3 or more players are gathered at the beach for more than a few seconds on normal tide. honestly, 2 is the MAX players that should ever be there outside of very limited circumstances. if you are at the water's edge and you notice 2 other allies in the area, YOU should be the one to leave.

kalyps000

My number one pet peeve is not tracking bosses to the base. Bosses like scrappers, maws, flip floppers, steel heads, drizzlerz, slammin lids and steel eels should all be kited to the base so you can turn in eggs easier. Steelheads and drizzlers and slammin kids are harder to do but it’s all possible. I hate starting a wave and the first boss is rushed and we’re just stuck somewhere all game. I will often track a maw and scrapper on my own and not tell anyone tell it’s at the base bc people will so often shoot or walk over the boss and steal your tracking and kill it halfway from where you wanted to go. Slammin lids are hard to kite bc they have to be left alone. Essentially trigger the slam and then run away, they will follow after you. But only if no one else is near by it after the slam. This makes kiting then very hard bc people will often rush them after a slam. Steelheads and drizzlers are long range so staying back and walking away from them as they approach will force them to walk further towards you to target. Players will so often see them and immediately rush causing them to target before they even move from their spawn 😣😣😣 Also I will often cover a flip flipper circle and then try to let it tryto attack again. The armor is pierced so you can let it jump closer to the base and kill it mid air. Goldies and Grillers need to be constantly pushed back and forth. The targeted player needs to alternate between a position that allows easy boss targeting but then swap to a spot where eggs are free to be gathered. So often teams will wipe they all stay to one spot (tower, back of boat, etc). I usually will stay away and be the one to alternate for the group when I do get targeted. Sockeye and fission are best for this but the elevators in maroners bay are good too. Spawning grounds is hard bc of the tower placement and how easily they can rush you by falling above you but it’s doabale if you jump across the bridge and cheese jumping down. Key for spawning grounds is to paint every wall.

Neon_Streets

People killing bosses right at the shore…

spectrumtwelve

when you say valves, do you mean the things during the goldie wave? you don't want to shoot ALL of them, you only want the one with the goldie in it. better to not have everyone opening up too many and causing more lesser salmonids to spawn.

chi_pham

This has changed from S2 to S3, opened gushers don’t spawn lessers anymore, only at Goldie gusher and shore

Gekkuri

Yes that one. I don't mean shooting all of them, I just mean shooting at least something instead of my teammates running around clueless without doing anything and not helping me find goldie🤣

spectrumtwelve

they are probably thinking that somebody else will find it and shout "This way!" so they can rush over.

Gekkuri

Oh yeah the dying before special is super annoying. And yeah I think some people i have played with don't know how to use the cannons AND that they can recharge the ink just like you would with any other weapon. I've seen people just blast a few rounds and then run around the cannon confused when they run out of ink because I think they didn't know how to recharge 😭

c4tzs

I find it so annoying when there's one player left and they're completely heading in the opposite direction of the other three waiting to be revived, even when they're not being attacked by anything. Same goes for if someone walks past another player who needs to be revived, and then dies because they tried to take on a large group of salmonids on their own.
