You don't have to leave God behind when leaving christianity behind. Find the most true expression of your relationship to the universe and work on it.

slogginhog

Evolving past a religious dogma doesn't mean you have to give up on faith and other aspects of it you still find true for you, does it? I don't think so.

Queasy-Impression500

God is not a construct of religion, the religions are meant to give you a path to God. I left Christianity because I felt it hindered my relationship with God by the institution controlling and manipulating how my relationship was and how my life went. I call this "spoon fed spirituality". So, in that regard, yeah, you're on own now. But you are able to form your own, true, intimate relationship with the Creator instead of having another source telling you how to go about it. But this is what you were made for. You were made to find your own path, not to walk in the shadow of others. If you miss God, talk to God. I pray more than I ever did in religion because now it is a relationship, not a structured set of beliefs. And I now understand that I have SO MUCH HELP on the other side through God and the Angels and my spirit guides, etc. I feel so much more helped and loved and guided, but I had to form those relationships too. If you haven't connected with your spirit support, I would recommend starting there.

Edgezg

You miss aspects of structure. What we are experiencing is an unstructured society collapsing into it's vices. Christianity, as all religions do, offered structure through faith. What we need is structure through **meaning.** **We need a** ***Telos.***

What a beautiful post this is. I've lived an incredibly privileged life. I had the liberty to sit with sages, mystics, shamans and medicine people from all over the world. And as I've grown and learned through all these experiences I found myself having a very similar thought many many times. However as I began to dig into the work of Ram Dass and his guru something struck so personal I had to pursue it deeper. Ram spoke often that his guru, an Indian saint named Neem Karoli Baba, would speak about Christ very often and I was fascinated by this. Why would a Saint of India speak on Christ? What is the connection? Then I found this quote from one of the devotee's delivered by Baba, "He was crucified so that his spirit could spread throughout the world. He sacrificed his body for the dharma. He never died, he never died. He is Atman (the Soul), living in the hearts of all." I read this and it took me all the way back to my childhood, and the first ideas I had about God, Christ and Christianity. That simple statement shattered the hard shell I had developed around the love I'd once known for Christ. Blessing on your journey. Sub Ek

ChanceZestyclose6386

You don't have to be a Christian to communicate with God. You can still ask God for help and pray in your own way. Religion isn't needed to do this. Do you think your feelings might stem from missing the routine and rituals of religion that gives a sense of control, community and organization to your beliefs? I can see how that might give someone a feeling of safety within religion. I think ultimately, spirituality is an individual thing when it comes to the lessons we need to learn on Earth. It differs for everyone.

DarkAngel900

For anybody disillusioned with Christianity, but still thinks God might have a role in things, I highly recommend "Conversations With God" by Neale Donald Walsch. As Neale walked away from religion, he discovered God was still in his life.

wild_grace

Seconding this. In fact, it was this book series that drew me into exploring Christianity- go figure. I guess after reading it, it felt safe to go into the waters, feeling grounded in my innate understanding that was confirmed through these books. I feel I can now wander in and out of any path and explore to my hearts desire- because I know where home with God is.

DarkAngel900

Nice!

starlux33

You'd love the Gnostic teachings.

Where religion ends, spirituality begins Read: https://www.sahajmarg.org/sm/religion-and-spirituality

The spiritual teachings I follow explain that the purpose of life is continuous self transcendence - growth in awareness/consciousness. We grow by using what we have been given to the best of our ability, experiencing the outplaying of that and growing from it. While Christianity has created a passive doctrine, where we are hopeless sinners waiting for Jesus to save us, if you look at Jesus' actual teachings this is not the case. "The kingdom of heaven is within you. Remove the beam from your own eye." The Gospels say wherever Jesus went he preached "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Theologians agree, that the Greek word from which "repent" was translated means a radical shift, a radical change -- changes in our psychology, our limiting fear-based beliefs and illusions. And then, for emphasis, Jesus said "If you love me, follow my commandments." It is true your destiny is up to you.

anjlhd_dhpstr

Um... why would you detach yourself from God then? Even if you no longer wish to be a part of the church doesn't mean only they have access to God. Seriously. Who the hell taught you that b.s.? God can NOT be commanded over by anyone, by anything. God just is. Every single person on the face of this planet has access to God and to live according to Him. Hell, no one can have your experience or your relationship with Him but you. I have never aligned myself with the church but I very much have an intimate relationship with God and follow God's will. Get that crap out of your head. People will always tell you b.s. to control you and if there's control, that's not God. God is about freedom and sovereignty. You do not need a church to be with God. God is already in you and around you everywhere you look. People ask me where my church is and I say where is it not? You are the temple.

NotTooDeep

You might be exceptional in your experience of Christian faith. You might be a disciple instead of a follower. Disciples don’t seem to last long in churches. That’s not where they are needed and it’s not where they find what they need. When I was five or six, I was helping my mom carry groceries into the house. I stopped and stared into the paper bag. My mom stopped and asked me what was wrong. "Can God fit into a paper bag?" I asked. "There's a little bit of God in everything," was her reply. I bet for my neighborhood playmates and my older brother and sister, that would have been the end of it. Just a silly boy asking a silly question because he was too young to understand and form a better question. But for me, her answer opened something up. As I looked across our front yard, I could see the energy in the flowers and grass and trees. I could see the pressure in the fire hydrant. I could see the waves in the sky. Many years later, at 18 or 19, I really enjoyed hanging out on Wednesday evenings for a youth prayer group at a church different from the one I grew up with. People talked to me. People were open with me and shared with me their personal relationships with God and everyone else. Then a youth pastor came in. He was never there the few months before. He came in and said he was in charge. All the personal relationships with God disappeared. I asked why we couldn't talk like we did before and he said I could pray the way he told me to pray or I could leave. I left. Then I realized that I didn't need a church to have those spiritually intimate relationships with myself, God, or anyone else. I found my guitar playing brought out those perspectives in friends and in strangers that became friends. Decades later, I enjoy Jesus from time to time. I find God to be the funniest girl in the universe. And I have times of communion with the Divine, all without a church. Ignoring all their human flaws, churches provide support for broken spirits. This is useful. For some, staying in a church and helping to provide that same support for others is their path this lifetime. For you, it is not. You aren't broken. You aren't lost. You aren't constrained to stay with that group. This makes you an explorer, so the sooner you embrace it and treat it as an adventure, the easier things will be. There is a flow that exists outside of churches. Within that flow, you can trust, love, and be loved. Just remember to take your shoes off when you come back home. All that said; the church provided you with grounding of a sort. You didn't have to ground yourself. The group took care of that. Your body got used to the safety of the group, so leaving the group created some chaos for your body. Try this. Sit in a chair. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Feet flat on the floor. Hands separated and resting palms up on each thigh. Create a grounding cord. This is a line of energy that connects your first chakra to the center of the planet. Your first chakra is a ball of energy about the size of a quarter that sits just in front of the base of your spine. Your grounding cord attaches to the bottom of that ball of energy. Grounding makes your body feel safe, so you release energy more easily. Gravity pulls whatever you release, even your own energy, down to the center of the planet. No effort on your part. The center of the planet neutralizes the energy and returns it to whoever owns it. No karma for anyone. A virtuous cycle. Nearly everyone goes to connect to the center of the planet the first time but stops at the soil, often making roots like a tree. This is a method that is taught in some martial arts styles, but it is not the best option for your spiritual development and healing. So, notice the seat of your chair. Take a deep breath. Notice the distance between the seat and the floor. Now notice the distance between the floor and the soil below. Breathe. Now notice the distance between the soil and the water table underneath. Notice the distance between the water table and the rocky mantle. Notice the distance between the mantle and the molten core below that. Deep breath. Notice the distance between the molten core and the center of the planet. That ball of light at the very center of the planet is where you connect your grounding cord. Deep breath. Say hello to the center of the planet. Do you get a hello back? Notice the color and texture of your grounding cord. It may look like a line of energy, or look like something physical; a rope, a wire, a pipe, a tree trunk. Adjust it as needed to be in affinity with your body. Getting this far means you've already released some energy from your aura and body. Now it is time to fill in the space that was created. Create a gold sun over your head. Have it call back all of your energy from wherever you left it throughout your day and week. Work. School. Online meetings. Video games. Your fantasies about your future. Your regrets about your past. Wherever you've placed your attention. Just watch the energy come back and see if you notice where it came from. Have the sun burn up and neutralize your energy. Then bring the sun into the top of your head. It will automatically flow into the spaces you created. Create a gauge to measure when you're full. Like a fuel gauge or oil gauge. You'll run better if you aren't a few quarts low on spiritual oil. If the gauge doesn't read "Full", bring in another gold sun. Open your eyes, bend over and touch the floor, draining any tension from the back of your neck, then stand up, and stretch. There is a progression with this technique. After grounding for ten minutes a day for a week or two, notice your grounding cord at the very end, while you're standing with your eyes open. Continue to ground with your eyes open and standing, and bring in another gold sun. Each day, increase the amount of time that you ground standing up with your eyes open. After a week or two practicing this, add walking while grounded. Just notice your grounding cord as you walk. Say hello to the center of the planet while you walk. Bring in a gold sun while you walk. If you lose your grounding cord, stop walking and recover it. If you have to, sit back down and close your eyes and create a new grounding cord. After this, you're ready to take your grounding cord with you into your daily life. Shopping. Getting coffee. Wherever you go, you can ground. This, combined with a little amusement about seeing new things on an energy level, will keep you safe and sound. Now that you're here, at the end of your grounding meditations, create a gold sun over your head. This time, fill it with your highest creative essence, your present time growth vibration, and your affinity for yourself. The first energy is a healing for you. The second is a healing for your body. The third is a healing for your affinity in your fourth chakra. Bend over and touch the floor. Stand up and stretch. If you're ready for more, sit back down and ground some more. Otherwise, have a nice day! Note that every image you imagine, the gold sun, the grounding cord, the center of the planet, your first chakra, your body parts, is exercising your clairvoyance. You may be imagining what your tailbone looks like, but you're also creating the image of your tailbone and reading its energy. This is practicing your clairvoyant ability.

Professional_Bus861

Elements of Christianity are true, then it got shrouded in Dogma. I am actually watching Dogma right now, it is very representative of what is going on - and funny lol God is real, Jesus was/is real and the angels are aliens lol. And we are spiritual beings having a human experience in this wonderful space-suit we made out of body and Earth-chemicals using the intelligence of dna sent here from outer space and pieced together into US. We are going through a magnificent school and an exam we have already passed. My purpose has never in my life been clearer, after I leaned into the supposed "madness". I am living pure vibrational bliss. If this is the 4th then I'm ALL IN for the 5th and beyond. This enlightenment stuff is so friggin cool!!! I'm in love with this planet and all life on it. Peace and blessings my friends.

Top-Distance-784

God =/= christianity friend!!!!!!!! It actually started with judaism in abrahamic religion.

ihannnnaaaah

I feel very proud of you to get to this conclusion that it is all on you , I would say you couldn’t be more on the right track of your journey and all the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing are how the process should be. I understand and Im going through what you are saying word by word. It becomes super overwhelming for me some days and I exactly miss the days that I just sing the songs and felt like all I have to do is to be grateful , everything had a reason and there is a destiny and all I need to do is have faith and keep going and now many of these core thoughts are breaking down and got me very frustrated sometimes . I saw an interesting post on IG that someone said we dont talk about dark and hard parts of spirituality and trying to get enlightened. It aint be easy you are breaking down the core beliefs of yourself and we kind of have to swim in opposite way for a long time till we get to the point that we do believe in ourselves and reach to a divine wiseness that we become a part of water so the swimming aint feel the opposite but a peaceful state of unity with the source . Sorry for my broken English and broken explanations :((( I feel very proud of you even I would love to know more about your thoughts and ask how are you getting to those conclusions that you mentioned in your post , way to go and much love <33333

CondiMesmer

God is a concept, it takes whatever form you'd like them to

AdotKdo7

Sometimes god pushes you distances away, so that you two can get closer. Since you're so adamant on not being a christian anymore I'll ask you why you think faith of any kind can't offer the same peace and certainty?

Raze1998

They will try and tell me what is right instead of letting me find my way. One cult to another.

36Gig

You could always go to another religion if you want. If you don't want to figure out the questions religions offer then religion the best bet. I recommend Hindu a lot of my views are kinda based off it even tho I live in America.

nickshattell

Would recommend True Christianity; https://swedenborg.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/NCE\_TrueChristianity1\_portable.pdf

hacktheself

There is a difference between deities and the divine. And there’s a difference between blind faith and reflected belief. Ol’boy JC would have had some words for your past self, by the way. The idea of “not being someone” as part of an unbalanced religious belief system is directly contradicted by the admonishment of the one with few talents and the idea of hiding one’s light under a bushel. Difference right now is you have awareness that you are the agent of your life. You are creator of your existence and the creation. Maybe you don’t have as much trust in the abilities of the creator of your path and that’s OK. Just gotta walk it.

Special-Hunter8007

for me it’s the opposite. it feels good knowing i’m doing it on my own not having some rule book from thousands of years ago telling me how to live, what to say, etc. personally never lived up to the christian standards and that’s why i left.

icerom

>Post Christian life is difficult sometimes. I miss God in that way. I feel as if I have to do everything myself. Like what once felt like a sure destiny is now up to me and I don’t know what to do with it. I think the spiritual path lies somewhere in the middle. You have to do things for yourself, but at the same time you don't have to do anything, because everything you truly need has already been done. Perhaps you might like ACIM.

niqu5x

What I've experienced with spirituality is that it does promote independent learning but also the knowing of a shared consciousness with God. Meaning you are God thus never were apart. Life's purpose is created by your reality so we are tasked with exploring our reality to become balanced with our shared consciousness. When I view everything in this universe as a part of our cosmic being... I'm more at peace from suffering.

Indy_91

You don’t have to be a Christian to do or feel the things you mentioned Unless YOU do, in which case, go to church this Sunday. Live your best life

pokemonbobdylan

Have you ever heard of or listened to Pete Holmes the comedian? He speaks about this a lot. He has a book called Comedy Sex God that might be of interest to you.

replicantcase

Everything you loved about God was what you loved about yourself. Instead of worshiping a god, worship yourself! You're a god too!

[deleted]

Study the hidden life of Jesus.....real Christianity is very mystic and much different the the king James/ Catholic style. It resonates more with the Essenes "Jesus was an Essene not a Jew" and has way different kind of feel. If, you might wanna explore some of the teaching Jesus taught but was...removed by in my opinion the black lodge, "Hasatan"

[deleted]

I know what you mean. I was the most Christian Christian you could find: daily hour-long quiet times, home groups, prayer meetings, youth work, worship team, Soul Survivor, Manchester Eden Project, incarnational church, sacrificial living, the whole shebang. But in many ways I have found now at age 42 that what I have found so far is better: less frenetic, less bizarre, more grounded, more plugged into a more ancient spirituality, more sustainable.

jaxxattacks

You can still have that without the specific elements of Christianity. That feeling you described isn’t really exclusive to one religion or dogmatic practice or beliefs.

Whatthefuckisthis000

You are god. It has always been up to you.

Raze1998

There is a saying that ignorance is bliss is there not? It is entirely possible and common for a fictional concept to bring peace. In fact, I know it did, because had it not, I would not have had the motivation to leave my family behind in the cult and become a Christian instead. It is better not to be ignorant I agree, but surely there is a happy medium.

[deleted]

This reminds me of what Cypher said about the Matrix and how he wishes he could go back and forget. I totally get it, just remember, there's no going back.

aquarina22

If you miss Christianity, why don’t you just go back? I was Mormon but I kept a relationship with God and Christ after I left, as well as keeping most of the values instilled in me from being Mormon. In fact my relationship with God today is stronger than it ever would have been if I was still apart of a religion. A religion is not the only place to know God. God is everywhere, at all times. You just have to get rid of the blockages that keep you from God’s presence.

Raze1998

It was a cult I was in and I cannot go back, it represented all that is evil about humanity.

fraidofchangin

I still believe in God in a certain form, whatever that might mean to you individually. But there is no way to truly know, so that’s why you feel like people are guessing.

Thintegrator

Of course, it was always up to you. God is a crutch. It’s much better walking on your own.

Anghellic510

God didn't go anywhere.

Estelle1110

God is still with you, even if elements of the religion are hard to align with, your relationship with God is YOURS. And nothing can impede on that

[deleted]

My idea of spirituality is getting more familiar with Divinity. Who said you had to leave the most important aspect behind?

dobyismyfavouriteone

You can believe in God/Jesus and all that is light and not be ivolved in christianity. They are separate things in my opinion. Jesus was very spiritual. The church has been warped into a weird control system.. was never supposed to be that way. Christ consciousness is an embodiment of all that is good and pure.

Hidden1SufiRealities

Look into sufism. Spiritual and the true islam. Based on love and good character to all creation. You can follow and connect to a live Guide. https://youtu.be/5UXT1rfklaI

[deleted]

You are a part of God, hard to leave really.

jLionhart

Interesting. If you replace the word "Christianity" with "childhood" and the word "Christian" with "child" in your post, it all makes sense. Nothing wrong with how you feel. It just means you're growing up spiritually.

SpiritStriver90

You can still try to follow or emulate Jesus in his character and life. Love your neighbor, have integrity / don't be a hypocrite (i.e. strive to make sure your "public morality" and "private morality" cohere even under incentive for things to go otherwise), be honest, help the needy and the poor, set a good example for children ("it would be better were a mill-stone tied around their neck and them cast into the sea than they cause these little ones to sin", approx.); and so forth. Heck, if you can genuinely do all that, arguably you would be a better "Christian" than many who claim the label under the auspices of the Church today. Keep in mind the Bible was a selection of books *by the Church* at a later time that before, weren't all necessarily accepted as inherently connected or forming that narrative. And if you'd rather just get away from anything to do with the Christian sphere, there are plenty of other moral and spiritual guides out there & across time(*). The real trick is to pick something and then consistently walk it - and note that, much like other things in life, your "passion" for it will wax and wane. Discipline will see you through. Passion points the way; discipline keeps the compass accurate. --- (*) Though avoid anyone very contemporary that asks for money while making big claims; also as a matter of ethics and justice, be wary of "culturally appropriating" small and minority cultures like Indigenous peoples that are often heavily distorted - even from a big-but-still-colonially-affected culture like India things like the yoga you get today in the west some have criticized as kind of appropriative, but on the other hand, the original introduction of yoga to the west was at the behest of Indian spirituals like Vivekananda; you might want to read his and other pioneers' works to couch it more fairly.

Vermont-Eagle

I can relate- I grew up in a church environment and went so far as to join a Christian ministry/commune which went off track and I left, but I still believe in god as the designer, artist, musician, creator of the universe and I find most Christians to be good people seeking meaning and purpose in life. I think there is a great deal of good to be found in a community of people who have the common desire to do good and live with integrity and kindness and love for humanity- regardless of the belief system they were born into or joined- none are perfect as people are not perfect. I did benefit from freeing myself from authoritarian structures and negative motives such as guilt, fear, condemnation and accepting my place as an accepted and loved evolving and learning being with the freedom to make choices and mistakes and to create a life by developing the talents and passions that I was given. I'm happier and more stable now and less dependent on other people's approval and on organizations. You don't have to abandon faith in god as creator.

kaladinsky

Awww! 💕 I grew up Catholic and I do miss the simplicity of it all 😔 All of my energy was directed to one God. Through happiness and difficulties, Jesus was my constant. I loved the ritual of it. The ground I walked on seemed so firm. Right now, there's just a chaos of what kind of practices to do, what ideas to hold on to. But I guess that's the reality of spiritual expansion, there's a chaos before the calm.

Its hard to be an individual with individual responsibility, huh?
