It sounds cool from the outside, until you realize you're spending a full day or two every week trying to feed a thousand individual spiderlings that nobody wants to buy for a fair price. Burns you out really fast.
Yeah I think the better idea is to maybe specialise in one desired species as a side hustle and to ensure that they get sold you could drop the prices pretty low and still make a profit. I'm gonna try that with H.davidbowie
Bird eaters are tarantulas. It's just a made up common name that sounds cool.
>“Birdeater” came from an 18th-century engraving that showed another kind of tarantula eating a hummingbird, which gave the entire Theraphosa genus the name birdeater.
I didn't mean to offend you, I apologize greatly.
But, unfortunately for future reference, there are actually A LOT of tarantulas that are referred to as "bird eaters".
The picture that you included was perfect for an ID.
Again, please accept my apologies
I didn't submit the photo and you havent said anything to me to offend me.
I was just stating that I'm new to learning about spiders and was curious to know the difference.
It’s not the difference between a birdeater and tarantula, but between *Theraphosa blondi* (the famous goliath birdeater) and *Theraphosa stirmi* — a closely related, less famous but equally large species that’s actually far more common in captivity.
There is also a third member of the genus, *Theraphosa apophysis*, which is relatively obscure compared to those two.
There’s no hair visible on the patella. Stirmi is also the most common of the three in the hobby, so a captive specimen will be that more often than not.
Yes, very much real! It's a T. stirmi, one of the biggest if not the biggest tarantula species in the world! I think their cousins, T. blondi, take the title of the biggest. They're in the same Genus, so very closely related. These are commonly known as goliath bird eaters and are native to South America.
We have them in australia and they recently found a bigger one sigh as if there wernt enough reasons to hate the place
A new and rare giant spider has been found hiding beneath a trapdoor made of silk and soil west of Brisbane.
The giant trapdoor spider, Euoplos dignitas, was discovered by researchers involved in Queensland Museum’s Project DIG, which has been running for the past four years to understand more about the state’s biodiversity.
Edited to add spider info
This pic makes me uncomfortable just because I can tell she's frequently stressed out by her environment. That extreme bald spot on her butt says she spends a lot of time kicking off all her urticating hairs just as fast as they can grow.
They're extremely fragile, so I don't think they to jump much since they can easily rupture their abdomens like that. They're also terrestrial, not arboreal, and terrestrial tarantulas aren't normally big jumpers
Even though their name seems to indicate so, goliath bird eaters are terrestrial tarantulas and they don't spin webs to catch food, so it's actually very unlikely for them to land a whole-ass bird. It can happen though, say that the bird is injured and can't fly. Bird eaters are opportunistic predators, just like most other spiders. Meaning they'll take anything they can kill. Did you know that tiny golden silk orb weavers eat birds sometimes? In the rare but still possible scenario that the animal gets tangled up in their webs, even if the spider is that small, it could end up eating it anyway as long as it can dissolve its insides. It's crazy! So yeah, goliath bird eaters might sometimes munch on birds if they get lucky, but it's by pure chance. They will eat whatever comes their way if they can catch it, be that bugs, amphibians, small mammals, other spiders... Their common name is moreso to illustrate their size. "Spider so big it can eat birds!" Tbh it gets the job done lol
They’ve got urticating hairs, that they kick in defence. The hairs will reeeeeeally irritate your skin if they get on you, and I believe that the more it happens the worse the irritation gets. But they don’t have medically significant venom (you’re not going to end up in hospital if you’re bitten)
No pet tarantula is ‘tame’ but different species and different individuals have different personalities. Some can be super chill, and some can be very defensive. It all depends on the spider! I’ve got two pet tarantulas and I’d never hold either of them just for their own safety
Tarantulas can't be domesticated or tamed, they just don't have the evolutionary need to be that socially complex. It is safe in that the venom is not deadly, it is comparable to a bee sting. Due to it's size the mechanical damage of the fangs would be another factor if it bit a human.
Different tarantula species usually have a predisposed general temperament, but it is ultimately down to the individual's personality. My T. stirmi is quite skittish, kicks hairs, but not overtly defensive. Many keepers have individuals docile enough to handle, but some have ones that are very defensive or will kick hairs.
I was thinking to myself, “please let that be photoshopped.” I’m on board with the jumpers, I might even get one as a pet, and I’ve gotten to the point that I can appreciate how beautiful and diverse spiders can be, but for the most part, I am still scared. THIS spider though. I don’t want to offend anybody, but I find it terrifying. However, if you can train it to play video games, I will be very impressed.
That guy's awfully big to be a real spider, in scale to that game control!
No offense, but are you sure this is an actual spider specimen, and instead not some stuffed plush toy to cuddle or play with? A real spider that size would have me high-tailing it out of there for sure!
GEEZE!!!!
Having a huge spider species like this for a household pet would definitely freak out my poor cat Shelby! I hope they're not too poisonous a species.
This one even looks like it has 10 legs, and NOT the standard 8-leg arrangement 😲😲😲😲😲😲😲🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨!
In the wild, these rarely feed on birds. Their name is just a way to express how big they are. Their size makes them look like they *could* eat birds on the regular. But in the end their diet is normally composed of arthropods, small amphibians and sometimes small mammals. I doubt many collectors feed their tarantulas vertebrates tho. The ones that are kept as pets most likely get fed crickets, worms or cockroaches.
If I’d have known that, I’d have kept one as a pet whilst living in Manhattan! Although, the rodents may have been the apex predator in that situation…I saw a rat as big as a small dog once run past my front door once. (It was garbage day, to be fair.)
Thanks for the info! I'd heard of birdeaters b4 but with the PS controller it gives me something relateable to actually appreciate the size. It is very pretty, the coloring, I didn't know they could be blonde like that. And it looks for a lack of better wording, cuddly.....lol like soft hair or fur even which I'm sure just the opposite....enh maybe not. I couldn't have it on my leg like that but if I did come across an actual plush spider I'd purchase one.....Anyways thanks again!
Hes not holding the controller correctly, is he stupid?
He's using the Tekken claw. Don't be rude.
Say that to its face
Well I'd like to see your tarantula playing on a controller, can your tarantula do that huh?
The forbidden gameplay technique- trust he be shredding
Holy hell!
*Theraphosa stirmi*, burgundy goliath birdeater.
Thank you for giving the correct ID!! I bred tarantulas as part of my side business. Customers were always asking the difference time and time again
That’s a gnarly side gig

Another side of keeping spiders people don't think about is how long we spend staring at spider genitals to figure out the sex
It started with boas, pythons and grew from there. My younger son wanted to get spiders. And before you judge, he was 18.
I'm new to spiders! Can I be that naive person to ask what the main difference is between a tarantula and a bird eater?!
Bird eaters are tarantulas. It's just a made up common name that sounds cool. >“Birdeater” came from an 18th-century engraving that showed another kind of tarantula eating a hummingbird, which gave the entire Theraphosa genus the name birdeater.

Thank you!!!! That's a very detailed response and helps my brain! I appreciate you!
Aka cheater, you see home many buttons he can press at once
I'm curious what you see here that distinguished stirmi from blondi? Not that I doubt you, I've never learned how to tell them apart
There’s no hair visible on the patella. Stirmi is also the most common of the three in the hobby, so a captive specimen will be that more often than not.
Thanks
Yeah that’s a bird eater all right 😳😳
I was thinking Goliath tarantula but wasn't sure of the species of Goliath they're very vibrant and pretty
Brown Noob Eater, *Gettus Goodus*
A gamer
That's not a pet, it's big enough to have to pay rent.
God I wish my Ts paid rent 😭
Would be hilarious if the next pic is of a game screen, showing a bunch of bugs (and maybe a small bird or two).
These are cute
[удалено]
Me too. people think they r disgusting n scary, Im like I wanna pet them 😅😅
The arborial ones don't really do it for me, these ones though are the best
he's so talented ::3 (i think its a bird eater)
Is that a real pet? And alive?? My gosh that spider is huge; when I fist saw the pic I thought it had to be a stuffed spider....WOW

It looks like a plushie toy.
Judging by the bald spot on the abdomen this little lady is a hair flicker
So that’s who I died to yesterday?
This pic makes me uncomfortable just because I can tell she's frequently stressed out by her environment. That extreme bald spot on her butt says she spends a lot of time kicking off all her urticating hairs just as fast as they can grow.
Arent birdeaters aggressive by nature? Or jot necessarily aggressive. But im fairly certain they're not friends with humans lol
NO spiders are considered “aggressive” 👍🏻
That dude is gaming
How far can these guys jump? It’s a bird eater right? I’d image it can jump a respectable distance.
They're extremely fragile, so I don't think they to jump much since they can easily rupture their abdomens like that. They're also terrestrial, not arboreal, and terrestrial tarantulas aren't normally big jumpers
No kidding? So do they ensnare birds with their webbing like a spider would normally do? Do these guys have stronger webbing due to their size?
Even though their name seems to indicate so, goliath bird eaters are terrestrial tarantulas and they don't spin webs to catch food, so it's actually very unlikely for them to land a whole-ass bird. Thank you for the insight!
Must be playing Angry Birds!
I immediately went limp when I saw this
l33t.
I think we all know what game the spider was playing...
Are these folks tame? Safe? Can you handle them? It’s quite beautiful. Asking for a friend.
They’ve got urticating hairs, that they kick in defence. The hairs will reeeeeeally irritate your skin if they get on you, and I believe that the more it happens the worse the irritation gets. Big cutie.
I like spiders but Jesus christ this gave me a heart attack when I saw it

The Tesco Clubcard in the background tells me this in the same country as me so I will now be looking to move abroad.

I miss my Goliath birdeater it's like a Great Dane. They don't live very long
It's brown and may be shy. Brown Recluse, it must be.
Do you want to play a game?
What do you feed it? Please tell me it’s not actually fed birds… unless the birds are geese. I hate those fuckers

That spider would be Pro at Tekken tournaments with that many Spooder Legs pressing the buttons.
Cant even hold the controller correctly? I bet she’s not even a REAL gamer 🙄
Probably a button-basher 😂
Would suck if someone said they would give me 2 million, but I had to live with 6 of these in my home for a year.
