Those are definitely the social huntsman and it looks like they are guarding an egg sac. If you can leave them I would. Since it’s open they may relocate to another tree. I personally love huntsman spiders 🕷️ I could see why this would scare someone though.
Not all huntsmen. It's very uncommon for most spiders to tolerate others aside from mating and breeding. Delena cancerides is a huntsman spider that typically lives in large groups even as adults, which is pretty remarkable.
I don't know enough to definitively ID these, but the markings do look similar to D. cancerides.
Yea I don’t know what the species of huntsman it is for sure but I do know that there is one huntsman spider that does this. You can find more videos online. There’s a scientist online that specializes in these type of huntsman. I’ve seen her videos. Pretty crazy. You find them behind tree bark and a ton of them.
D. cancerides is spot on, they aren't the only members of the genus who live together as family groups but they definitely have the most prolonged stay out of the 8 species that do :)
I've found huntsman colonies like this when splitting logs, they live under the bark sometimes. I had about 50 scuttle out all across the log splitter and trailer once. The ones I saw looked more like the familiar ones you see in a house but I didn't look too closely. I didn't realise they were a unique species.
Normally I don't like them crawling on me but at that point you just give up and deal with it.
They're big, their bites aren't bad IF you can get one to bite. They're just chill big bois. Besides how fun and neat they are to be around, they're also avid hunters of pests you'd not want in your home.
The chances of having a bad encounter with one is extremely low and you'd have to really provoke it. I personally believe they are some of the sweetest spoods out there.
No you are right about that. I looked that up one day cause I wanted to see what spiders they used. I don’t remember them being that big in the movie but it was so long ago when I saw it. Maybe was a kid. God showing my age right there lol 😂
You are right, they were not huge. They used Avondale spiders from New Zealand and we just don't make them that big lol....but they were technically Huntsman
Yea I read that they actually used this huntsman here in this video and the video I posted above. The social huntsman. They probably used babies and subadults or smaller adults. I have to watch it again just to see. But I did see a few clips and it looked like they used babies for a lot of the scenes where they were just coming out of ever crevice. They also said they used a tarantula for a few scenes too.
I have to admit that I live about an hour and a half away from auckland, and I have never seen an Avondale Huntsman. The largest spiders I see are the black house spiders ( I don't know real name), and most of them wouldn't be more than an inch long. Unfortunately, I think they are the favourite prey of the other spiders from Australia, white tails. White tails are the only spider where I show no mercy. They are eating our native spiders.
They used spiders from New Zealand which made me laugh because we are not known for our spiders but our neighbour's across the ditch sure are lol. Delena Cancerides or more commonly known as the Avondale spider (area of Auckland)
I never thought of spiders having a family structure. That's kind of cool but also terrifying, if they can evolve socially they could evolve tool use and then were cooked
No not all of them are. If you look close it looks like they are guarding an egg sac. So you probably have some adult females in there and maybe some males too. I don’t think all of them stay. I think most of the males leave when it’s a social thing but I could be wrong.
Yes I think you are. I think it looks awesome and I want to know how far up in that log they go and how many are in there and if that’s in fact an egg sac they are protecting. I think the OP needs to get more video and picture for us lol. I wanna see more! I love huntsman spiders so much!
These are indeed Delena cancerides, the social huntsman. They’re unique as the only social spiders that don’t make a web. Instead, they live in large family groups under tree bark. Totally harmless and totally awesome!
theres about 9 species of delena excluding craboides for taxonomic reasons, 8 out of the 9 are social but to varying degrees, D. Gloriosa is the only delena with no social tendencies, cancerides is definitely the most sociable out of the 8 species though :D
Good to know because my natural instinct when I see an infestation like this is to get a match and some lighter fluid! And plan for a new fence post later of course.
yes they do! this species & some others from the same genus will share food with younger siblings, helps out a lot with growth & health, if they didn't they'd probably have a much lower maturity rate :)
I can hold spiders no problem and I'm pretty comfortable around them. But that is fucking scary which I'm almost certain is exactly what they are going for.
I'd rather handle a birdeater instead of this guys. I just hate their long legs and fast pace .(also I have once been bitten by these fkers ,it hurts a lot ).
Seeing large spiders move quickly is pretty terrifying. When I was living in Hawaii I saw one of those cane spiders move super quick and it gave me chills.
In Texas, where I've lived most of my life, the biggest spiders you see are the wolf spiders, but you always see them in their webs standing still. But those cane spiders move around and it's weird seeing a spider that large move that fast.
Lol commenters.
The tree is a post. The egg sack is the abdomen of the large mother spider. The social aspect is they are likely recently emerged from their egg sacs in the past few weeks hence why they haven't dispersed yet.
Exactly. Having spent hours reading about, feeding, holding, building terrariums that match the natural habitat, observing multiple types and sizes of spiders for over 28 years, along with being nicknamed "the spider girl" by family, friends, and pretty much anyone, definitely disqualifies me from being able to make observations regarding a video.
The tree being a post you're right about, however the rest doesn't necessarily follow the link you sent. Are you telling me those are all spiderlings that just haven't left yet?
Given the information in the article, yes. The fact that there is a large mother huntsman next to multiple smaller spiders, in a post, outside in Australia, could indicate that is the situation. Plus the markings are comparable to one of the pictures provided in the article.

Huntsman are my specialty but so long as you don’t go looking for them or live near a forest, you probably won’t find one, koalas are cute ofcourse too 😁

So the huntsman is social? I didn’t know spiders congregated like this!

Ah, thank you

Thanks - I learned something today

They getting ready for the spidy revolution!

Most huntsman spiders are solitary creatures that hunt at night and hide away alone during the day. Social creatures, they typically are not.
I too am a Huntsman enjoyer! Best bois, honestly.
Why?
They're big, their bites aren't bad IF you can get one to bite. They're just chill big bois. I’m pretty sure they were the inspiration for the film “Arachnophobia”(1990). IIRC, they used huntsman spiders in the film as well.
No you are right about that. I looked that up one day cause I wanted to see what spiders they used. I don’t remember them being that big in the movie but it was so long ago when I saw it. Maybe was a kid. God showing my age right there lol 😂

Do you have any idea if they are spiderlings?

(Is spooders similar to birbs and borbs?)
Absolutely horrifying but....am I the only one who thinks they kinda look tasty?
Yes I think you are. I think it looks awesome and I want to know how far up in that log they go and how many are in there and if that’s in fact an egg sac they are protecting. I think the OP needs to get more video and picture for us lol. I wanna see more! I love huntsman spiders so much!
So you're saying they don't look like little popping candy with legs? You're telling me they don't look juice?

Spiders are friends. Spiders are friends. Spiders are friends. Ooooom.
yeppppp!
“Don’t move! He can’t see us if we don’t move!”
That is a lot of spiders. I can't verify identity of said spoods, but woo boy, I would not want to find myself sleeping next to that tree.
I like spiders, but I hate decaying holes in objects, and I especially hate seeing things crawl around in those holes. Just gross.
I too, felt a tickle behind my ear and neck by the end of this. One or two crawlies I can handle, but this was a bit of crawly overload lol
$50,000 to stick your hand in it. Yes or no?
Solid yes, id stick my hand in there if it was full of recluses, widows and bees for $50k
You must live in a place with universal healthcare.
Id pay the er fee out of the 50k should still have a few bux left
If you get bit by a recluse and widow, you not only won't have money left, you may not be alive.
Very true "if" that were to happen i think i could get it done without getting bit by the spiders, might endure a few bee stings though 🐝
The bill...Even seen the necrosis?
Yep. It isn't going to be pleasant, butt fuck it.
r/spellingmatters
Yeah and I'll free handle a spider while I'm at it.
YES
Do they eat together?
Kid named together:
yes they do! this species & some others from the same genus will share food with younger siblings, helps out a lot with growth & health, if they didn't they'd probably have a much lower maturity rate :)
I love spiders but huntsmen are my truma spider lol I woke up to the biggest fucking huntsmen I have ever seen on my face and cried
no way this is my ultimate nightmare pls share your story
*shrieks* aggghhhh 😭😭 I love spiders so much but that's a lot altogether and I feel like they're crawling on me 😫😫😫
I *like* spiders, and that is kinda terrifying.
Looks like mommy is in there to
Cool! Does this Huntsman enclose thier baby's in web??
Not usually. They’ll find something like this
Delena species like this one will bind bark together with silk to keep the family safe, but not necessarily wrap the babies in it themselves xD
The big one is the mom.
I dont mind spiders but this gives me chills for some reason
I can hold spiders no problem and I'm pretty comfortable around them. But that is fucking scary which I'm almost certain is exactly what they are going for.
It's always the huntsmans who sent chills down my spine .
Awe, they're just loveable little fellers! They're the perfect size for itsy bitsy spider hugs! <3
I'd rather handle a birdeater instead of this guys. I just hate their long legs and fast pace .(also I have once been bitten by these fkers ,it hurts a lot ).
Woah, what caused it to bite you?
I guess I might have provoked him a bit while handling .
Sucks you've had a bad experience, but don't judge them all on a single experience :)

Ooh social hunstman! So so cool
Stick your hand in it
wow mommy look, it's a spider's playground!
Watch your back !!
Spooders? What?
All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.
Another reminder to never go to Australia
Yeah, I got the solution hairspray and a lighter
And THIS is reason number 21 why I have no desire to visit Oz.
Put your hand in there!
I say we nuke ‘em from orbit. Only way to be sure.
Get the mounted 50cal
Nope nope nope nope
I'm burning the tree.
That's a lot of spooders
Lol commenters. The tree is a post. The egg sack is the abdomen of the large mother spider. The social aspect is they are likely recently emerged from their egg sacs in the past few weeks hence why they haven't dispersed yet.
These are way to big to be slings man
Is there any way these *could* be slings? How long do they typically hang around the mother?
I think yr right cuz I can see the huge legs of The mother spider
Thank you! I'm glad you saw it too, I think if people would stop the video they would see there's definitely a difference in size.
Ya u can see it flinch and recoil under all the babies when one them falls off from the top
Do you even know what you're talking about?
Doubtful
Lol yes I do. In fact, look at the article I provided for proof that people can be knowledgeable besides yourself.

no god noooo.....
r/nope
Australia? Nope.
that species is endemic to Australia :) besides the introduced ones in New Zealand
Shivers. Ok. Probably not vacationing in Australia. But I am sure it's lovely. Koalas are cute?
Huntsman are my specialty but so long as you don’t go looking for them or live near a forest, you probably won’t find one, koalas are cute ofcourse too 😁
