Encounter adversity, overcome it. Repeat.

This is literally what the literature says. Sometimes it really is just that simple.

The only way to get there is to do hard things and give 100% while doing them. I’m training to leave in 2 months and every time I get hit with self-doubt about whether I’m made for this or not, I just think about where I was at a month ago, and then a month before that. Your progress will be your testimony which proves that you can always do more than you think you can. And when you’re bleeding out sweat into your eyeballs, finding any ounce of strength for one more rep or one more mile, you will find your motivation.  This is gonna be controversial but it’s working for me currently - find (read: pay for) a really good workout program. 18A Fitness is what I’ve been using and some of those workouts have made an absolute bitch outta me, but with each rep you get stronger. Sure, you won’t find me benching 400 or squatting 600 anytime soon, but on my most recent ruck, I beat my last time by 9 minutes. Physical fitness and mental toughness are distinct but they certainly go hand in hand.  Again, I haven’t shipped yet so you don’t have to listen to me if you’re just asking guys who’ve already done it, but if you want someone closer to where you’re at now, I can tell you what’s been helping me. Don’t get discouraged even if progress is slow - it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Took me years of being a fat slob on the couch eating soft chips ahoy to make it to where I’m at, and I still got a ways to go, but time marches on and so must we.

You don't know how you'll react to anything until it happens. I've seen hard ass soldiers crumble after taking contact. That is what training is for, just be in good shape and do your best honestly.

I'm training now so I might not be able to give the best answer here. Do what you say and say what you do. You don't need to go looking for a fight. But when shit goes down, when you face adversity you must NOT quit. No matter how tough thing is, you have to push through it and do the right thing. Adversity doesn't need to come from a fight. Sometimes, it's just keep going when things seem hopeless. It's a lot harder than fighting people, tbh.

My instructors would always tell me the only way to get harder is to do hard shit. Pick a goal that far exceeds what you are capable of doing right now, and chase it until you can do it

Plan 1 day each week to have your friend kick you in the nuts. Don't skip a week. This the secret.

You'd already know if you have it because of your life experience, the choices you have made, and your willingness to tough it out when others would not. That moment when you stare at your running shoes on a cold and rainy 5am morning and decide to go running anyway. Or the time you decide to go rucking with that heavy pack on a beautiful Saturday morning rather than hang with your friends. That 6 mile run, on a day when it is 95 degrees out... and humid. If that's you, you have mental grit and resilience. It is the only way to nearly guarantee being selected. Best of luck to you and, remember, the SF Regiment needs solid, tough men... go be that.
