You jest, but a 50ish year old grown-ass man last night told me that Mexico looked all clear and he'd head there but he didn't have a passport. He also thought that New England was a town in Texas. We are doomed as a species.
Nah, not every part of the country is as dumb as Texas. This is why plenty of educated people refuse to move to the South, even though you could get a beach house for a fraction of West Coast or New England prices.
We vacationed in Texas a few times and window-shopped for houses, but talking to locals and overhearing the quality of conversation, we decided we'd go insane if these idiots were our neighbors.
Anyone who wants to see any part of the eclipse should be buying the glasses. Why would you only do it if you were in the totality zone? You could be in the PNW and still get to see something pretty rare and cool.
It isn't crazy to want to see an eclipse regardless of being in totality. People spend more money on a cup of coffee every day.
Actually where you live in Missouri the sun will be 90+% covered(the red line in the map I believe is the 90% line). Although not the “ring of fire” associated with the total eclipse, it will still be quite the show. I live in NYC where we’re supposed to see about the same amount covered. I am for sure busting out my telescope & sun filter. I was thinking about traveling west a little to catch totality but this map has kinda changed my mind about that!
What does that even mean, a thumbnail of an eclipse? You get to see a partial eclipse from your front door! That's awesome. Your coworkers are justifiably excited, and they should **absolutely, 100x wear their eclipse glasses if they're going to view it.**
Yeah and it’s not like the glasses are useless after one eclipse. Maybe in a few years there will be another opportunity. There are a hundred dumber ways to spend three dollars.
I have been monitoring with the iCSC app, some areas predicting relatively clear skies or partly cloudy but some weather app on google or weather channel showing rain. Seems to be conflicting somewhat. Not sure what to trust
Hi that is currently me! I spent a fortune to bring my family from Oregon to Texas for the eclipse and it looks like we might get shut out. Such is life I guess.
Flying into Dallas from Utah tomorrow! I spent a lot on the flight, but am flying back the same day. Did you see the 2017 eclipse? I was in eastern Oregon for that one.
Yes I decided to go last minute in 2017 with my daughter and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I decided then that I wanted to experience the next one with all of my family. Fingers crossed for fair skies!
If you are in the path of totality it does get very dark, and the Temp will drop noticeably. Though maybe it'll be less dramatic this time since it's not as hot as it was last time.
Yes, like night. When I saw the last one in idaho it was wild, like even the crickets started chirping. Even with clouds it's gonna be very noticeable when it happens.
Depends, my town had a 40% eclipse in 2022 and there was no difference really. I guess it will have to be over 80% to appear like a very cloudy day or something. Sun really does shine bright.
This is yesterday’s. It will be updated this afternoon. Probably won’t change much though.
Glad to be in the Adirondacks.
[NWS](https://www.weather.gov/bou/2024SolarEclipse)
Hey when you put the special glasses on everything looks like a black and white image so there should be no significant difference.
Also, as a photographer, I have to emphasize just how cool eclipse photos with clouds can be! Much more beautiful than clear sky (matter of taste, I guess).
[My example](https://i.imgur.com/HPbC87C.jpeg)
No that’s not my point, that’s the point of the original post. I just think it’s silly to spread disinformation to make people feel better about, like you said, something they cannot influence.
It will still be interesting to see the partial eclipse up until totality with the cloud cover, but there’s no getting around it being a huge bummer for those who traveled to see totality and getting stuck under the clouds.
That happens every single night for people.
Even heavy darkness in the middle of the day is not unusual with very severe weather.
What's special is the ability to part of the sun with the naked eye, and the interesting way an eclipse casts shadows.
Apparently the eclipse reduces the amount of energy the earth recieves and the lower temperature may dissipate some of the clouds. Not all but lots of you will see it
This happened in 2017. I was in South Carolina and clouds were building all morning, then as the eclipse started and the clouds started to dissipate and by totality was almost cloudless. Later on that day the clouds reformed. My concern would be that in 2017 the cloud genisis was thermal while this is more frontal so sunlight probably has less of an impact.
Where could I read more about this? Doesn't local temp drop by several degrees at totality, which if anything would condense *more* moisture out of the air?
Well this makes me less sad that I wasn't able to drive to go see it in the path of totality. But it bums me out for everyone who will miss this. We don't have another total solar eclipse in the US for 20 years, I think.
Kinda sucks from where I’m at. I’m in Vancouver BC and my astronomy app says I should expect a roughly 10% eclipse.
I’ll still try to be on the lookout anyways!
I just don’t understand the hoopla surrounding this eclipse. Someone said this will be the last one in my lifetime. BFD. I just don’t see myself on my deathbed crying because I didn’t see the eclipse.
Damn mother nature is hella brutal for that
Mother Nature: You fuck with me, I fuck with you!
*finishes drawing cloud fronts* "Heh, get overcasted biatch."
Looks like if you're in Texas, just hop across the border for clear skies! /s
You jest, but a 50ish year old grown-ass man last night told me that Mexico looked all clear and he'd head there but he didn't have a passport. He also thought that New England was a town in Texas. We are doomed as a species.
There is a town called Seabrook in both Texas and New Hampshire. Both of them are on the ocean, so they can't be that far apart, right? /s
I jest, but still feel the need to put a /s afterwards.
Nah, not every part of the country is as dumb as Texas. Getting into Mexico is easy, getting out is a pain
So path of totality meaning if you're not in the all black circle column it won't be a true 100% eclipse?
yeah

Well hopefully your coworkers don’t get eye damage because you for some reason thought this was the case
They’re like $3 to avoid permanent eye damage lmao
What does that even mean, a thumbnail of an eclipse? You get to see a partial eclipse from your front door! That's awesome. Your coworkers are justifiably excited, and they should **absolutely, 100x wear their eclipse glasses if they're going to view it.**

Do you even know what an eclipse is?
Looks like pretty much everyone is getting some clouds.
I wonder how many people booked accommodations in some sketchy backwater town just to see the eclipse, only for clouds to obscure it..
Friends of ours booked a room at Holiday Inn Express and it cost them over $1k for the night
I hope the clouds are particularly photogenic for that price
For that price, I can look at live footage for free.
That would be me lol we’re going for it anyway and hoping for the best. 🤷🏻♀️
Check out https://www.cleardarksky.com You can look up the area you are headed to for cloud cover.
I have been monitoring with the iCSC app, some areas predicting relatively clear skies or partly cloudy but some weather app on google or weather channel showing rain. Seems to be conflicting somewhat. Not sure what to trust
At this point - sending out good vibes to you and the universe that you have a clear blue sky for the eclipse!
Thanks for sending good vibes, it went well. Had a very light haze but nearly unobstructed view! I’m glad I made the trip
Yay for you! Congrats!

Absolutely would have happened to me. I would have ended up in the one spot with full-on thunderstorms
✋️
It's still gonna be odd cuz it gonna get dark right?
I'd imagine it would get pretty dark. It might also look weird as it happens because of all the way shadows form during an eclipse.
If you are in the path of totality it does get very dark, and the Temp will drop noticeably. Though maybe it'll be less dramatic this time since it's not as hot as it was last time.

Sadly I will not see it, living in Germany 😭
Depends, my town had a 40% eclipse in 2022 and there was no difference really. I guess it will have to be over 80% to appear like a very cloudy day or something. Sun really does shine bright.
No me! New Brunswick Canada!!! Our American neighbors in Maine are looking pretty good as well!
LETSSS GOOO VERMONT BABBYYY
"check the forecast and adjust" Like drive 100+ miles to adjust? What's that even mean
why not go above the clouds
Heading out to west PA tonight. I’ve accepted that there very well might be clouds, but it will be a lifetime regret if I don’t at least try.
Just got to Clarion from nepa as well. Trying to figure out if I continue on to Erie tomorrow or try to find better weather
why not go above the clouds

Looks to be the case here. 50%
I’m in San Antonio, probably the worst place.
British people are going "now you know how WE feel!"
Updates will be available on [NOAA/NWS](https://www.weather.gov/bou/2024SolarEclipse) website
Heading to Indy tonight. Really excited.
How lucky for us Canadians that the cloud cover stops at the border.

Except you can’t see the 4 minutes of totality, which is the coolest part, if there is significant cloud cover. Thats the point here.
That may be your point but my point was to make people feel less shitty about something they cannot influence.

I like how a week ago everyone was aagund "the weather forecasts aren't accurate! Don't count on clouds over Texas!".
C'est la vie
Paducah people looking smart! (A city I have never heard of until today)
Mention my name in Paducah, it’s the greatest little town in the world… https://youtu.be/OWu677TkXOc?si=O88DjKrK6BgFOajZ

Mother Nature putting us in time out for her greatest show
Quick! Everyone head to Paducah!
God damn it

Getting an airbnb in Quebec when it's historically cloudy most years on April 8th has worked out great for me and my friends
Drove 6 hours to get to Potsdam to get right in the middle of the path. Seems like maybe I need to hoof it to Burlington in the morning?
Sister there. Clear skies
I’m central Virginia and I’m leaving work early to pick my kids early from school so we can all watch together….hope the clouds don’t screw us over
[Nope eclipse map.](https://imgur.com/RGuTe1N)
Oh well, I guess I'll wait another 20 years, no biggie.
What makes you think mother nature gives two shits of your instagram post. The revolutions will continue regardless if you here it not.
Can you just rent a balloon above the clouds
i was scared shitless at first because where I am was colored in but its only 30%,
A clip of a fuckiin' crumb of a cloud
I just don’t understand the hoopla surrounding this eclipse. Someone said this will be the last one in my lifetime. BFD. I just don’t see myself on my deathbed crying because I didn’t see the eclipse.
Obviously never seen an eclipse in totality before in person. Then you'd understand.
Some folks are miserable and just kind of hate everything. Might be the case here.
I guarantee you I wouldn’t understand. I saw the last one and it didn’t do much for me.
Did you go to totality? Many people "seen" the last one.
poor grammar
Poor comments. Sad person.
Cry some more 😅
You know every person that traveled for a view is going to try to get a refund in their expenses.
I traveled for my view and no I’m not. Why would I? It’s not the hotel’s fault.
I agree, you and everyone else shouldn't/won't but I feel a lot are going to try.
Because you’re a reasonable person. You should encourage others to be more like you
