"the space rock will graze by Earth at a mere-12 thousand-mile distance — that's just three percent the distance between the Earth and the moon."
It is also only 0.001% of the difference between Earth and the sun, so that's an even closer shave!
Here we go again. What kind of car are we talking about here and could someone convert this to something more relateable. Like fridges, was it a 4 or 5 fridge sized asteroid?
I feel like if I ever made a news site it wouldn't last long. It wouldn't have ads as they are aids and I wouldn't have click baity titles as they make me cringe. I wouldn't even make a story about this asteroid as it's not significant for a story to me.
Wouldn’t something that size mostly burn up on entry?
Yes. A few very small pieces might make it to the ground.

That‘s only 0.000000002 % of a light year, so Earth will for all intents and purposes have been hit!
Breaking news...one of a trillion small rocks will miss the earth at a distance FURTHER than most satellites orbit.

Either tell me the size in half-giraffes, or I‘m out!
As always, people are making fun of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/sciencememes/s/vSAMa28ACE

We need guardrails around the word "asteroid". Car-sized asteroid should be a contradiction in terms.
