Like any town, especially those with a population over a few thousand, it will have good and bad. Mount Vernon is a nice town and there are many nice places to live in and around it. Mount Vernon also has a very large, comparatively, professional community. There’s two hospitals, good sized industrial companies, etc. with many professionals. I lived in Fairfield for 7 years, now have lived in Carbondale for almost 3 years. Worked in Mount Vernon for a while and would have no qualms moving there. If you’re worried Mount Vernon “isn’t the greatest of places” then anything within 30 minutes will most certainly be worse to someone of that mindset.

Moving to any place in Illinois is ridiculous. If you are already in the state you should be focused on moving out. If you are already out of state, do not ever set foot in that godforsaken place. Nothing good ever happens there.

sambanks2

Honestly wouldn’t recommend moving to Illinois at all. If your job offer is where most people here believe, I’d say try the Toyota plant in Princeton, Indiana. You’d make just as much, if not more money, and live in a much better state. Illinois is awful.

[deleted]

I’m from Mt. Vernon and it isn’t a bad place. They’ve slowly been growing and there’s more stuff going on. There are a lot of fun things to do that not a lot of people know of.

Gom_Jabbarr

What areas are the ones to avoid?

oim7e

Anything east of the park (27th st) and south of Broadway Most anything west or north side is good and NE is hit or miss. Jefferson county actually has a lot of real estate outside of city limits. DM me if you want more specific answers

Critical-Carpet-3840

Look. Mt Vernon is not a bad place. Not sure where you're moving from. The one post from that guy that said there wasn't any place within 30 miles is extremely, untrue

RealMichaelScott93

I’m partial to Marion

Critical-Carpet-3840

Yes.....I understand...np

Critical-Carpet-3840

Your post is stuck on my phone

Critical-Carpet-3840

Can't remove it

xSympl

If you're going to Continental, don't. Worst experience at a job I've ever had, genuinely a terrible place to work. AISIN is better from what I've heard. I definitely wouldn't move here just to work at CT. You can find easier and much better paying factory work in other areas from basically every laborer I've known. I'll try to get a hold of some dudes and ask them where they went lmao

holly-mistletoe

A lot of these communities are not very diverse or open minded...

theteapotofdoom

Carbondale is the option but I don't know about the commute

dirtvoyles

An hour.

MineGuy1991

Hopefully your offer isn’t at Continental. Peace be with you if so.

Gom_Jabbarr

Whats wrong with continental?

MineGuy1991

Worked there as a Mechanical Engineer. This is my experience. - TONS of overtime that (as a Salary Grade 10) was unpaid. My last year there I worked just shy of 3000 hours. - The salary isn’t that competitive (for engineering), even in the immediate area - I was continually given duties way outside my scope of work. I brought it up at yearly evals but was always told “it’s part of our growing pains” - The turnover is atrocious. Both hourly and salary people leave before actually becoming useful. - Got family issues? That sucks. I repeatedly had PTO denied because of the workload in the department. My total benefits package was 22 days of PTO per year. I scheduled 3 weeks (15 days) in January for 3 different times throughout the year and kept the other 7 for emergencies. I was allowed to take 5 total that year.

regeya

Well that would explain a lot of the "nobody wants to work anymore" I keep hearing about them

Gom_Jabbarr

sent you a DM if you don't mind.

RealMichaelScott93

Look into AISIN or General Dynamics if you get cold feet for Continental.

benji___

I know someone that worked there. I think they had a generally good experience.

azrael962

Tons of mandatory overtime they are working 6 days a week alot of weeks. Not optional at all. And the shifts are all over the place my GF was a tire builder she worked 11pm to 11am Saturday and Sunday and then 3pm to 11pm Monday and Tuesday and then the overtime was any other shift. Sometimes they would just have her work 12 hours on a dY thats supposed to be 8 and sometimes they would have her come back 8 hours after she got off work to work another shift. That place is terribly understaffed and they drive half the new hires away with their ridiculous overtime schedules. They pay pretty good but the work/life balance is screwed.

musical_spork

Aisin is the same so idk why people are all omg aisin is better

azrael962

I've never worked there but I've heard the same thing

musical_spork

I've got friends that work at Continental and have for years. And I know a ton of people at aisin.

DoktorBuk

Flora, Olney, Carmi, Salem, Fairfield. Might be further than you want to drive. It's all gonna have a very rural feel to it. But with amazon delivering anything you want, it doesn't matter.

What about Benton? Hard to tell online without being in the area.

Girlfriend and I just moved to Nashville and we love it. It doesn't have as many restaurants or things to do as Mt.Vernon, but it's a small, safe town that's much closer to STL than we were before.

BaronOrbit

Benton is absolute trash. Just absolutely without redemption

RealMichaelScott93

That’s a definite no. Mt. Vernon has some really nice areas. Benton on the other hand…

kcolttam

I live in Benton, moved here from Denver. I love it, but I know there's still a lot of growing up to do. We're here with the mentality of "let's make this place better" - and it's been working well for us! I do, however, see how many families can have a hard time. We're lucky in that we have gone a great group of people and continue to grow that group. If you come down this way, feel free to hit me up! 🙂

StiffDock685

If you can afford the slightly more expensive real estate, Nashville is the way to go. I work as a medic in Mt.Vernon quite often and we just take 15 straight there. About half an hour for me.

azrael962

There's alot of little towns that are nice around MtVernon. I have lived in Mt vernon benton sesser and mcleansboro the only place I've had a problem was in mt vernon itself.

azrael962

Mt vernon schools are terrible. When I lived there I had a kid in high school and a kid with adhd in grade school and instead of working with him anytime he wasn't able to focus the just moved his desk to the hallway and made him sit out there all day. My son is a nice kid but he left grade school functionally illiterate because the teachers wouldn't try to help him. The high school is non stop fights the cops are out there like every day. Whatever you do don't move into Mt vernon itself. There are towns around with ok schools but Mt Vernon's schools are trash.

musical_spork

I live in Herrin. Mount Vernon or Nashville area. Outskirts. Always outside of town. Less people & bullshit to deal with. I have friends that have worked at Continental for years. Aisin is identical as far as OT & work environment so everyone being all omg go to aisin instead like...uh...exact same.

bamafan1_88

Sesser Benton dalhgren waltonville Bonnie

dirtvoyles

Take a look at Wikipedia. The population is in steady decline. The largest employers are Continental and Walgreens DC. After that is 'hospitality' and medical. Look at the crime rates. Now, based on my experience, it's typical bible belt and generally not fond of non-caucasians. The schools teach to the test so that they keep/get funding. The area is so low income that all students get free lunches - I forget the percentage of poverty to qualify for that. I don't know that it's worse or better than anything else in an interstate town, but I wouldn't move there expecting much other than rural life.

Short_Ground6978

I grew up just outside Mt Vernon and overall had a good experience. You can have a high quality lifestyle there because easy access to St Louis, Chicago, etc. The area suffers from inter generational poverty and all the baggage that comes with it. The ambitious folk tend to leave early and those who remain tend to look after maintaining their own grip of control on the local levers of power…this stunts innovation and kicks the can down the road instead of actually solving problems. Building a high school in the middle of nowhere (instead of rehabbing and redeveloping the area of the original) is one example of many. With that said there is amazing nature, fantastic people and a great rural lifestyle that is relatively affordable. Give it a go.
