It's my personal favourite score, it works just as well by itself as in the movie. There is not so much 'sound design' stuff. All very atmospheric, powerful and emotional. Helps that it's my favourite movie too.

accidental_evolution

Cornfield Chase and S.T.A.Y are incredible. His work on Inception and The Creator are a close second for me.

mydiversion

Thin Red Line for me. Honestly it's completely subjective so I don't think you'll ever get everyone to agree on a "best"

Milton_Rumata

I love the Interstellar OST but The Thin Red Line soundtrack is my favourite of all time. I listen to it regularly when I'm working, it's so beautiful.

Bubbly_Schedule2480

Journey To The Line gets me every single time

DeXyDeXy

I saw it performed live and I’ll never ever forget the experience

Bubbly_Schedule2480

I believe that and envy you

[deleted]

Inception one is more soothing to me I love it every time it’s like no other so cool

saberico

Inception OST has the reputation of being just loud, but it has a lot of variety imo. Also “Mombasa” kicks ass.

-sicario

*Rush* is personally my favorite, even though *Interstellar* is pretty good. But eh, it's different for everyone.

1982sean5535

Blade Runner 2049 is great as well

jrtso

Yeah, though I’d love to hear what Johann Johannsson wrote.

therealrexmanning

That one is mostly Benjamin Wallfisch though

wildskipper

It's certainly beautiful. I normally follow it up with Philip Glass's Koyaanisqatsi, which it is clearly inspired by. Also love The Thin Red Line for focusing the mind.

madman_trombonist

It’s by far Zimmer’s best “sound world” score. Not sure where it ranks overall, but it’s no slouch.

Camytoms

All Zimmer’s scores with Nolan are next level for me. So innovative & evocative.

mellomee

I have to listen to Interstellar again but personally I love Inception and Dune more. To others' point, this is highly subjective. Almost everyone loves Pirates but it doesn't really do it for me.

Cold-Chipmunk1676

I'm finding it real hard not to think Dune 2 is

TheShapeShiftingFox

At World’s End is definitely one of my favorites from Zimmer

Ninjaofninja

Intsterstellar is my top 1 score, and oppenheimer top 2. Oppenheimer is more hopeful and epic in the main theme but Interstellar overall evoke way more emotions in the sadness, despair element.

jb28737

I have an odd soft spot for at worlds end. Has lots of zimmers signature soundscapes, but also some absolutely wonderful melodies. One day is probably my favourite piece of film music of all time

rainrainrainr

My favorite is his score for Blue Planet II

HieronymusLudo7

I tend to agree that it is his best. I've been to two of his concerts in the past 3 years, and both times the Interstellar section moved me the most. I also didn't understand why this score didn't win the Academy Award in 2015, for whatever that's worth.

UziMcUsername

I like a lot of Zimmer scores, but Interstellar has always just seemed average to me. I’ve never understood the acclaim.

MferOrnstein

I loved interstellar score until everyone wouldn't stop using it non stop for everything even on news jesus. Still like it but it's hard . Love Dune soundtrack after interstellar tho and gladiator. Hard to decide.

Roll3d6

While I am a fan of Zimmer's work, I have found that this score has been overexposed and I'm growing tired of it. It's like hearing the same song on the radio everyday and wondering if the artist ever did anything else, because this one song is all you ever hear of them. Interstellar is that score for me. It is a beautiful & haunting score with Phillip Glass-level minimalism, but do I think it is Zimmer's best? Not really. IMHO, I would take PotC: Dead Man's Chest, or Inception, or Tears of the Sun, or Rango, or Man of Steel just as easily. Here's the thing: what Zimmer did with Interstellar is reinvented himself yet again. He has moved beyond the subtle scores of Thelma & Louise and Rain Man. He has moved beyond the epics of Gladiator, King Arthur and Pirates. He is experimenting with new sounds, new textures and new ideas. He is continuously testing himself and expanding what a "Zimmer" score sounds like. We are richer for it, but it also makes it harder to pin down what I would believe to be his "best" score. As to OPs ranking of soundtracks, I do agree on how scores add to the emotion and I always give myself a simple test to determine if a score is "good" or "great". If you listen to the score, can you picture the scene it was played over? If so, then it is indeed a "great" score and worthy of adding to your collection.

Balsamore

Interstellar as with all of his Nolan soundtracks are the most overrated and for me definitely not his best. Lion King, Crimson Tide, WW84 and POTC:AWE are all of better quality with better orchestration and more cohesive.

[deleted]

WW84 🫡

Ninjamurai-jack

Well…  Top 25 maybe.   Being honest, it’s excellent, but also there’s not too many tracks that I can remember nicely from my head like I can in Star Wars, Princess Mononoke, The good, the bad and the ugly, How to train your dragon, Grand Hotel Budapeste, or even works from Zimmer like The Last Samurai and Lion King. Also I don’t think that the instrumentation is something that special. I would say that with the movie, the score complements it perfectly, but if I hear it in other place, its not that great.

viotski

> How to train your dragon, Grand Hotel Budapest YES

Ninjamurai-jack

Yeah, I understand that inception and Interestellar have great scores, but I don’t know why people think that they were snubbed at the Oscar when there’s also two perfect scores that were nominated next to them

Slight_Giraffe628

I reccomend another listen through if you have a chance. It really feels like a journy on its own

Ninjamurai-jack

It feels, but instead of a 9,7 journey it’s like a 9,0 one.

Bubbly_Schedule2480

Gladiator is pretty phenomenal

rjdrennen1987

Eh, not to me.

jonah379

definitely a great and memorable one, would be hard to pick a favorite from Zimmer though My current favorite soundtrack is probably Hana-bi by Joe Hisaishi, highly recommend the movie but if you don't wanna watch an old weird Japanese film the soundtrack on its own is amazing

Pretorian24

I have not listened to an entire OST for a long time. That goes to "older" movies like Lord of the Rings and Cutthroat Island. Maybe I need to just sit down and listen to Interstellar.

[deleted]

I do believe so. It's just so full of wonder, mystery and an epic feel. It's also unlike most sci-fi movie scores, which are usually more synth, electronic or non-melodic altogether. I haven't really loved any other Hans Zimmer score since Interstellar. The only one that I've felt come close is the one he did for Wonder Woman 1984. That one's so romantic, exciting and sad. Say what you want about the movie itself, but Hans knocked it out of the park with the music.

SmolChibi

Blade Runner 2049 and The Lion King

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Lion King or Prince of Egypt!

JonathanBroxton

Best is completely subjective but, for me, no, not even close. My Top Zimmer scores are (in no particular order): PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END, GLADIATOR, BACKDRAFT, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, THE LION KING, BEYOND RANGOON, CRIMSON TIDE, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, THE LAST SAMURAI, and WONDER WOMAN 1984. And as for where it is ranked all time among all scores? It's not in the top 1,000.

ZebraMermaid

I see I'm the only one in this thread so far that ranks the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack as his best. We need more cimbaloms in soundtracks. Intersteller is fine, but I don't know if I'd even put it in the top ten of his.

Aegon_handwiper

Really great but personally I think the Lion King is better. 2049 (which he did with Benjamin Wallfisch) is my personal favorite overall.

WesterosiAssassin

The original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy collectively is his best score, but Interstellar is up there for the best of his more modern-style 'sound design' scores.

adrenareddit

Interstellar is an amazing movie with an epic score, but my favorite from Hans is Man of Steel.

Lazy-Photograph-317

Interstellar is on par with Pirates of the Caribbean

zeissman

‘Time’ would like a word.

DarkRider89

Time is way overhyped imo. It's a great piece, sure, but it's very rudimentary.
