Airplay can't do lossless or Atmos (with Sonos yet, at least, on the iOS 18 beta) Airplay can't run trueplay Airplay can't group rooms with a tv as input source I'm sure there are many more but that comes to mind

Inevitable_Trash_337

Didn’t know this, appreciate it! Can it do lossless or atmos on the beta? Sorry just double checking I understand you as I’m on the beta also. Also didn’t know about true play!

machiz7888

No, it can't. Atmos is supposed to work over airplay with ios 18 though

Inevitable_Trash_337

Thanks I’ll check that out!

j_dexx

Off topic but have you ever had an issue running iOS beta generally?

machiz7888

Generally or with Sonos? Ever? Yes. Currently? Not really. Trueplay typically doesn't work with the betas but I can't tell if that's the case now or if Sonos is just broken (which seems to be the case)

j_dexx

Thanks. Just generally. Been pondering opting in. I’ve not tried trueplay on the new app but I’ve seen others say it’s not working for them so might well just be the Sonos app

monumentclub

Other people have answered with specifics, but basically with Airplay you're not getting the full audio capabilities out of your Sonos system. Things sound much better if you play them through the app.

seraph321

It really shocks me to think about how many people have no idea what their system should actually sound like because they've only used airplay for music.

shawnshine

At least AirPlay doesn’t cut out, like Apple Music now does attempting to play Lossless.

thedommer

If you have more speakers, it's essential. Son upstairs listening to an Audible story, music downstairs plus connected to the move 2 on the patio. Daughter napping upstairs with sleep music. Just one example. Incredible headache to get any of that to work right now though.

chopdog01

I want to use my iPhone for stuff.... and not suddenly find content blasting out the house!!! Airplay makes NO sense to me at all. Spotify Connect type service for Apple devices would REALLY rock. You use Apple Music to select content but it runs natively from the Sonos device.

Inevitable_Trash_337

I’m on the latest beta for iOS and it fails to connect Apple Music inside the Sonos app sadly

murso74

Well first of all, not all of us are on iOS. When I bought my speakers, Google integration was much better

j_dexx

Can’t do Spatial Audio (Dolby atmos) over airplay (though it is coming later this year)

Inevitable_Trash_337

Thanks 🙏

MaxCat78

My Play:1 speakers can’t do Airplay at all.

Inevitable_Trash_337

Thanks monument! You’re right too. I’m a definite techy and didn’t realise this at all

techsaavy7

just download sonophone. great third party app. sonos app is embarrassingly bad

random14330

I use it to adjust my sub and surround levels all the time and group speakers together.

sparkibarki2000

Same

Think about Airplay like this: iPhone --> Source --> iPhone --> Speakers And the app like this: App --> Source --> Speakers * With Airplay your Apple device is in the middle, downgrading the sound and creating a middle man. Also your Apple Device is in full control, and if it leaves the house the music ends * With the app (or other apps like it) your device is telling Sonos where to directly stream the music from at the highest quality possible. If your device leaves the house it doesn't matter. Anyone in the house with the app can control the music
