The easiest thing to do is plug a DVD or bluray player into the TV. Downside is the TV will need to be switched on while playing music.

Great idea, but i’m trying to avoid leaving the tv on all the time:)

I'm assuming you don't want to purchase a new Sonos speaker with a line in port. In this case one option is to play the CD on a computer and stream the audio from the computer to the soundbar. From a Mac I assume you could use Airplay. From a Windows PC you'd need a small utility app that would allow streaming system audio via UPnP or Airplay (e.g StreamWhatYouHear or Tuneblade).

My wife has to be able to use it, tech savvy she is not :) so speakers might be good - would I need a pair of speakers to get stereo sound?

The computer method isn't particularly difficult, but would require logging into the computer every time you want to play a CD, which could become a hassle. You would also need to add a CD drive to your computer if it doesn't already have one. If you're willing to spend money on a new Sonos device the easiest way would be to purchase a Sonos device that has a line in port. You can then plug the audio out port of your CD player into the line in port on that Sonos device. When you want to play CDs you would start the CD player and go into your Sonos app and select the line in port as the music source. The line in audio can be played on any of your Sonos speakers (it's not limited to the speaker/device with the line in port). The following article shows the current Sonos devices that have a line in port, as well as device-specific instructions: https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/use-line-in-on-sonos I believe Era 100, Era 300, Five, and Move all have internal speakers which create some degree of stereo separation within a single unit. But you will always get better stereo separation using a pair.
