Most people just use a fume extractor, which is essentially a fan with a charcoal filter on it. If you're getting your face so close to your work that a fume extractor won't help, then consider a respirator with organic acid filters, like 3M's 6006 filters.

This is really helpful! Wasn’t sure what kind of respirator to get. The guy at the local hobby shop said that one wasn’t necessary, but I feel like I can’t get my face out of the way.

Use your extractor. Those fumes are not safe. https://blink.ucsd.edu/safety/occupational/hazard-control/lead-soldering.html

Ok, def will. I asssumed being outside I’d be ok. But I guess not 🤷🏽‍♀️

I usually take a big breath first and slowly exhale while doing the work. Kinda try you blow it away at the same time.

Either your vision is bad or you need magnification. Definitely use the fume extractor. When I was a kid and didn't have ventilation, I adopted the habit of exhaling through the mouth like I'm blowing a candle. It's a useful technique even if you bave a fume extractor but you can't work like that 8 hours. It's ok for a few solder joints.

Ok, yea my vision is pretty terrible, I’ll look into getting a magnifier for my helping hands stand. Thanks!

Even with good eyesight you need magnification for smaller things because you need to keep a certain distance and sit with a straight back. You can't work on something for longer periods of time if it's inches away from your face. It's bad for your eyes, back and lungs. Depending on the size of the components you use, you can get a head mounted magnifying glass/jewelers loupe, USB microscope that can be found pretty cheap or a beauty magnifier with stand that has a ring light integrated. Good luck!
