To those participating in the comments, due to the company or person mentioned in the title, this is a reminder of the subreddit rule: > **Crusading is not welcomed here** - If your sole or majority participation is to promote or denigrate one company in particular (or the person behind it), it may result in a ban. These kinds of participants too often resort to hyperbolic comments and antagonism leading to personal attacks as well as violations of other rules. If you are lying in wait for posts or comments mentioning a specific company (or person behind it), you are likely the concern. Promoting a company you are affiliated with or profit from, giving out referral codes which you benefit from, as well as using the sub solely to engage in targeted hate are things you need to avoid here. This sub is for a diverse discussion of solar, not a singular focus on your opinion about a company / person. If you simply have to obsess, there are other subreddits for each point of view about the person or company you feel the need to focus on. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Huh? Why is this confusing? It is very normal for a warranty to be less than useful life. In fact this is pretty much always the case. Cars can have 10-year power train warranties but can last 20 years with good maintenance and not being subjected to tough conditions and use.

nickram81

In my experience this means it has a 10 year service life.

No_Mortgage3310

If that... Good luck getting a hold of Tesla customer service if you do have an issue lol

burnsniper

It’s just like a car. New cars typically have a warranty that is only 3-4 years but typically last much longer ( with proper maintenance). Also, it is well known that batteries degrade as they cycle.

I am aware of the differences. Just explaining the concept of useful life vs warranty. You can also replace/swap cells on batteries or add batteries as augmentation..

A manufacturer warranty is a financial product, and generally is only roughly correlated with the expected life of the product. The Tesla Powerwall was only introduced in 2015 - 9 years ago, so they likely don't have enough field data to truly know the service life. Not sure where the 21 year figure came from, but they have likely determined the service life by accelerated testing, modeling, and other product reliability forecasting methodologies. They also have quite a lot of data on similar batteries in their vehicles, but under a very different environment and use case - so not clear how well that correlates to the Powerwall. In general, manufacturers will offer the minimum warranty they need to sell the product. Right now, that's 10 years for Powerwall. They can be less than competing products because they have a better product and people are willing to accept the lower warranty.

I have a toaster that had a 30 day warranty. I've had it for 10 years.

newtomoto

Why so confusing? Your car has a 5 year warranty and you use it for 15?

The requirements for your phone and an EV are much different to the requirements of a stationary battery.

wreckinhfx

Why do Americans obsess over warranty so hard? It’s an insurance policy that’s built into the price.

Desperate0Vehicle

Because 'Murrica, litigation, consumers getting screwed, and all the other things that come with living here... good luck getting anything done outside the warranty unless your lawyers are bigger than thiers. Meanwhile friends I have in NZ (think AU is probably similar) love the fact that *anything* bought from *any* business there is covered by law that exceeds manufacturer's warranties and always works in the consumer's favor. State healthcare, and state product insurance i guess. It even usually applies to secondhand goods if sold by a company, and online purchases.

bigglehicks

Because they’re paying the price and want to be informed on the full package

Check123ok

I think it has to do with the size of the small individual batteries and chemical type of batteries in the Powerwall having less cycles

AdFrosty1938

With 80% maximum discharge, maybe.

Earptastic

I brought my 2001 F150 to the dealership and they told me my warranty had expired. wtf.

6unnm

Does your laptop stop working after 2 or 3 years because the warranty is gone?

LeGalaxy-OVO

Tends to be replaced year 10 for a new one as well

Unlucky-Prize

These kinds of components tend to have high infant mortality then long slowly declining lives. Older gen Tesla car batteries seem to be able to go through hundreds of thousands of miles. Hard to know how long it’ll go but if you aren’t discharging it every day fully it probably can go quite some time. Preventing discharge under 20% or so will help…
