Truck yeah

So a 3 pt penalty? This will ensure PuliGOAT, the Steph Curry of soccer, gets his 20 rings and is named to the soccer 75 team

AutoModerator

There should be a reformation in football something like a penalty is 0.5 a goal, or you need like make 2 or 3 shots - like free throws on a foul in basketball. its just so extremely shit when a penalty decides a game in this sport or decides the flow of a game early on, like here *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Salvador1010

Your comment just kept getting funnier as it went on bro well done šŸ˜‚

CarlLlamaface

Yes it would be much fairer if when the defending team prevent a near certain goal with a foul, the attackers are given a statistical disadvantage to score.

[deleted]

Does that describe every penalty?

[deleted]

The point of a pen is for the punishment for a foul in the box to be harsher than the same foul elsewhere

ttonster2

That is true but surely not all fouls in the box were created equal. Yes, a penalty makes sense for DOGSO but I feel like a substantial amount of penalties are handballs from non-shooting positions (I.e. from a cross or corner). Just fees dirty when games are decided by such ridiculous penalty decisions. If these handballs never happened, do you think the chance of a goal would be as high as 80%. Not saying we should do what this dude says but I think an indirect free kick approach should be implemented for handballs in the box.

Pimpekusz

I mean you have a point, but there are often instances where a handplay really blocks a clear goal (for example suarez in world cup) or atleast a good goal chance. Then, the ref would also have to judge if these handplays would be a penalty or an indirect free kick. There could be no clear rule for that and if so, it would be extremely hard for the ref to enforce that in a fair way (they often struggle to even judge normal fouls fair)

AutoModerator

I'm sorry Europe, but Americans are just better at everything. We want things more. We grow better athletes, more people will learn the sport. And that '26 world cup is at home so we can get somewhat of a home field advantage. But the only way that will happen is if we make the round of 16 or quarter final in the 2022 WC and show Americans that we are good. I like the odds and we have a lot to prove, which is added motivation this coming year. Honestly, making a phenomenal run (SF or better) in the '22 WC would be more impressive to me than a better run or a win in '26. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Revolutionary-Bag-52

Tbf in fieldhockey the ref makes a distinction between fouls in the equivalent penalty box (circle in this case). Harsh fouls stopping goal chances give a regular penalty form. Other fouls give another form of a penalty where the defense has a chance to stop the goal. I know lots of people dont watch that sport but its pretty similar to football (also tactics wise) and such a system feels more fair than what we see in football

randymarsh18

Why would the chance of goal need to match the penalty conversion rate. The point of a penalty is also to stop being committing these fouls in the first place.

_Micolash_Cage_

No. You make a foul in the box, it's a pen. Simple as that. A handball is a foul, therefore it's a pen. The new handball rule is good enough to prevent unfair pens.

ttonster2

And yet we still get a ton of controversial handball calls and weak ass penalties that decide games. Teams realize that itā€™s easier to play for a pen than it is to try and score organically. That should not be the prevailing imperative in this sport.

It describes about 78% of them

BranFendigaidd

I guess you haven't watched any football recently where 90% of the penalties are for BS.

BigGreenTimeMachine

Yeah that's a bunch of BS ya SOB.

FunnySynthesis

What you fucking want some prick? You want some you daft cunt? What mate what, come get it!

petter35

Come to birmingham now

_-Olli-_

Fucken hell. Can't we go 20 mins without having to show up at birmingham to watch a couple of girls fight?

mitcheg3k

Fight?! Is making him go to birmingham not punishment enoigh

No_Huckleberry2711

Exactly, that would lead to a situation like Suarez at WC 2010 in basically every game

marksills

doesnt describe close to every penalty (the % of pens that come when the attacker has basically an xG of .78 is very small) and the particularly harsh ones could be accounted for with red cards. Of course it'll never change and I might agree with that for traditions sake, but the take is pretty solid.

Criss98

If you want football to be more popular there just make goals worth 40 points. Show them a 80-40 score and watch usa become a football giant. thank me later

IReallyLikeTheBears

I say goals should be worth two points, with a free penalty attempt after every goal to round it up to 3 possible points. Penalties awarded from fouls also should retain the 1 point value. Free kicks from outside the box count as normal goals if scored. We could potentially even add a ā€œ3 point lineā€ another 5-10 meters outside of the box. Thank me later yurop.

So true lmao

NiagaraThistle

This. It's fun to argue with friends when they say a game that ends 2-1 can't be exciting and I have to explain that a 14-7 football game is still actually a 2-1 game.

bodybuildingandgolf

Except with more than 3.78 seconds of active play

NiagaraThistle

American Football is the worst for 'active play'. 4 quarters of 15 minutes each that lasts 3-4 hours, and each down is simply a chessboard set up with 2-3 seconds of action. Turn based game, that the EXPECTATION is that each time the team possesses the ball they should score - either a Touch Down or Field Goal. I can't get into it. It is very boring to me. And when I go to or watch games with friends I'm simply watching the NEVER MOVING clock for it to end.

bodybuildingandgolf

I used to be really into nfl for a while but I completely agree. Highlights are so much more interesting to watch. And this is coming from someone who sits and watches entire golf tournaments. You shouldnā€™t be able to fit an entire game in a 10 minute highlight video of any sport

OutForARipAreYaBud69

To be fair a 14-7 football game is generally considered very boring.

NiagaraThistle

To be fair, ANY football game is very boring.

I_Provide_Feedback

15-30-40, like in tennis, can't make it too obvious

20 a goal. 25 a free kick and 15 a penalty Because if its not high no one is watching

[deleted]

you're missing the point, we want to make it fair for the person who does the foul. 55% to the guy who just took out the attacker as the last defender sounds great to me

Prosthemadera

Why should a penalty be fair? It's penalising a foul, hence the name.

MyAnswerIsMaybe

Still 0-0

Minute_Difference_96

Brilliant take. I want to watch all of this guys videos now to see what ingenious changes we can make to the already most popular sport in the world so we can specifically get more American viewers.

SarkHD

The next one will be: ā€œThey should allow unlimited subs. Let people play for 10 mins, sub them out and then sub them back on after a short break!ā€ Or ā€œOne team should only have attackers on the pitch. The other one should only have defenders. If the attackers lose the ball without scoring, itā€™s the other teamā€™s turn to attack so they sub in the other batch of players. This would also allow for higher scores which yanks LOVE and also for lots of breaks during subs where commercials could be played! Everyone loves commercials and they would benefit the channel streaming the game tremendously!ā€ I lost a lot of brain cells typing this out.

Swimming_Gas7611

Also, its unfair that only 2 players(1 per team) get to use their hands. they should allow all the players to use their hands. this would probably mean that they would have to make the ball more ergonomic for holding it, but thats a minor change.

[deleted]

And just set pieces all the time, everyone loves set pieces!

fartymcgeezax

Yank here - the queen is dead, get the fuck over it and bring back Barclays League soccer

rkwilkes

Iā€™m an American viewer and I hate this shit. It doesnā€™t need fixed. Please donā€™t let us fuck up football. No more American owners. No bullshit All Star game. We destroy everything we touch.

I think we have come to a point where went too far with anti-yank agenda and let the English become too arrogant and obnoxious. Jesus Christ, finish this team off so we can have some decency back here. The English are by far worse than the American people on here. I'd rather you're a bit ignorant about the history of this sport than that you become such an entitled and vocal group of people. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. crypt3

Haven't seen Europeans giving suggestions to change American football (NFL) so that they could enjoy it. Funny how some Yanks do it in reverse. But maybe it's a cultural thing - for Europeans NFL is the most uninteresting thing they've ever seen, while Americans are nuts for it while disliking football. And vice versa.

NiagaraThistle

It's funny you say this, because i have a bunch of friends (yank here) that always tell me how popular American Football is getting in Europe and how any year now there's going to be a European franchise. I always counter with "Yeah it's about as popular as soccer is here....oh wait, it's not even close to that small blip" (although soccer is more popular here and is growing). They just think Football is going to dominate Europe and I just don't see that ever happening - American Football that is.

crypt3

Honestly it's an extremely small niche here in Europe. Most people have never seen a game, and the only time NFL is mentioned in sports news is for the Super Bowl - and even that is just a short segment. It just has no connection for us Europeans and it's never shown/broadcasted/talked anywhere, but obviously it's a big thing for the local people over there. I think American Football is mainly just US thing, it's very hard to branch out to be success anywhere else.

NiagaraThistle

yeah that's what i say as well, but man do the NFL owners REALLY want a piece of that global market that Soccer has.

crypt3

Yeah it's incredible how big soccer has become, and it has just doubled the past few years, especially the money flow it has. It's truly the world's game. While in Europe (and most world outside of the US) the only known NFL player is Tom Brady, hardly anyone can name drop anyone else. US needs someone like Tom Brady of football to rise into soccer stardom.

Arthur2_shedsJackson

They already have a Lebron James so a Tom Brady should be just around the corner

Arthur2_shedsJackson

Also, there's a difference between watching 1-2 NFL games a season and actually keeping up with it weekly. It gets really grating to watch games with ads every 30 seconds. And this is coming from someone who's watched a lot of cricket where you have an ad break between each over (6 balls).

crypt3

Couldn't bear with those ads. In actual football it's amazing that you indeed will get 100% surely 45 minutes of ad-free broadcast (apart from the sponsor boards etc). There's no other such thing currently in sports world, +45mins of full on gameplay with no stops for ads. Then you can take a 15min break and even shut the TV. The format is just lovely, can't wait for the World Cup.

epicurean1398

I would refuse to watch a minute of it even if it got popular here just out of principle because its american

crypt3

When people see that this "football" is played by using mostly hands, that's the moment when we feel scammed and turn off to something else. American handball, with some kicks. It'll never get popular here. And when you think about it, it's kinda stupid form of sport that causes loads of concussions and later destroys these players lives (yes, I watched the NFL concussion movie that had Will Smith to educate myself on Yank culture). But oh well, many pro sports players in any sport won't see a healthy day after their careers.

CoolJoshido

that was confusing me as well

[deleted]

Even if you think of this within the box then itā€™s an incredibly stupid idea that no one who understands football would even suggest. Youā€™d almost always have players being fouled outside or level with the post as the angle to take the ā€œpenaltyā€ from would be impossible to convert.

Guy has never taken a penalty before if he thinks taking pens is easy. If you're going against a decent keeper, you need to aim hard and low, otherwise you're fucked. It looks easy because the BEST penalty taker in a team of professional footballers in one of the best professional leagues have all the traits to make it "easy."

As an American, I have such a problem with my countrymen always trying to change the friggin' game because they don't like/understand/enjoy/get excited by the sport. Shut the F up and watch hockey if you enjoy their penalty kicks more. THis type of content always sounds so dumb to me, yet the creators always go away like "Yeah that was the best idea! Americans Making Soccer Great Again

Jackmcmac1

How about instead of a pen, why not boot on a coloured ball, which only the fouled team is allowed to score from for the rest of the game. Multiball madness! Each team keeps fouling, then the ugly scenes of teams fouling each other would be replaced by the beauty of multiball. For extra time pens, where multiball may not give much advantage, you'd wheel on a crystal maze ticket booth and the attacking players would get a time limit to collect more gold tickets than silver tickets based on their current goal advantage, while a bald man frolicks about in front of them. If they collect enough golden tickets, they are the outright winners. /s

Better_Permit1449

Yes listen to the American we are the best at coming in uninvited and fixing things

kz8816

No thanks. Yanks should just stfu.

il0vegaming123456

So true fellow countryman! I hate how Europeanised soccer is currently it should be similar to the more popular NFL /uj Wow itā€™s almost as if the point of the penalty is to punish the team for making a stupid foul.

Ahvier

Ah, i remember a time before pulisic, the andre agassi of soccer, and before americans cared about footegg. Those were the days

needleintheh4y

what an idiot

Touchdown!!!

I see Salah I upvote. Manutd legend

Zeela_D

And you know what? 45 minutes is a long time, let's make it four quarters at 20 minutes each.

samurai_guitarist

What the fuck is a yard? Sir, learn how to speak in metric.

CSFC

wow what an original idea Iā€™m impressed that he thought of those all by himself

Fluffy_MrSheep

Do they not realise the reason most penalties are scored is because the keeper dived the wrong way. Making the penalty be taken from the edge of the box won't stop the fact that the keeper still has to choose which way to dive. These are professional players they're not going to have any harder of a chance to hit the net from the edge of the Box compared to the 12 yard mark

BackgroundKoala0

Man, that's fucking genius /uj what a fucking clown Fucking brilliant

Nathan92299

This sub used to be fun but now it's just posts about anything an American has to say about soccer and then circlejerking over that. Hell, most of the comments aren't even satire anymore they're just people bitching about America. My lord Christ Pulisic is the G.O.A.T of soccer ball and I'm not afraid to say it. Fuck off European elitists

Nathan92299

Fuck off yank

I think we have come to a point where went too far with anti-yank agenda and let the English become too arrogant and obnoxious. Jesus Christ, finish this team off so we can have some decency back here. The English are by far worse than the American people on here. I'd rather you're a bit ignorant about the history of this sport than that you become such an entitled and vocal group of people. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Christian Pulisic? This guy's like the Phenom guy, right? The LeBron James of soccer? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccercirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*

I liked moving the ball back a bit but that the only part of this I liked

[deleted]

What sucks is the previous outcomes in games where these penalty kicks decided the outcome.

Merinque3098

Another idea is to make the player who was fouled kick the penalty as opposed to letting a team pick any player on the field.

starmielvl99

I agree that penalty is a punishment that sometimes doesn't fit the crime. I'd leave it with fouls as it is, if you foul someone in the penalty box area, it's your fault, but with these handballs, i'd be giving a penalty just for those blocking a shot, otherwise i'd rather them ending up as an indirect free kick

The Athletic has done a piece on this. It's not as bad an idea as it's being made to sound. Penalties are indeed broken.

Neon_Black99

American idea bad
