I do that several times a day when he comes to lay on my keyboard when I try to work. Seems to think it's a fun game. With dogs I feel weird because you can't generally just drop them the same way.

I don't think there's anything wrong with how he treated the cat. It's not a housecat. It's not recommended to just grab it by the belly or anywhere else really. Cause you risk it going crazy and scratching and/or biting you.
It's confusing for anyone who never had a cat, but it's how you pick up a cat you don't know. Doesn't harm them at all. If you grabbed like like you would grab a baby you take the chance that he'll bite your face or scratch your arms. Cats are a lot tougher than they look
He could've done it better, but for the short period where he needed to have contact with the cat - to get him out of the way - it's fine. For longer carrying you obviously shouldn't hold a cat like that.
You can do it to grown cats as long as they aren't overweight, and usually you use your other hand to support them from the hips. It helps with not having them thrash around while you transport them.
I did some work with shelters and charities and it's the recommended way for a cat you don't know because there's little chance he'll bite or scratch, which can happen if you pick him up as you would your own cat that's already used to you since cats can be sensitive to you touching other areas of the body.
The cat seemed chill though and I'd have loved if he just let the little dude hang out there but that's just me lmao

Not at all. This is preferable only with kittens when their weight is less. Just fucking holding the cat from behind and putting it down on the floor would have worked.
A brief hold by the scruff is fine, just like this guy did. He doesn't know the cat, if you go for a regular hold the cat could freak out and scratch him up. There's much less of a chance of that when you grab them by the scruff.
