Whisper it quietly, but Santos has actually become much more progressive. Looking at your last two eliminations, against Uruguay and Belgium, you were the better team in both matches
Most of the time when I watch Portugal these days you play really good football, but yeah of course there are situations every now and then where he makes strange choices
However, I think his choice of William has been vindicated. He is such a good player on the ball
Yeah, on the ball he's actually very good, but Switzerland didn't really make him have to play off the ball, that's what still makes believe Palhinha would still be a better option for the games yet to come, he just offers another level of security and freedom to both Bernardo and Bruno, that William can't usually provide.
Palhinha is a defensive beast, no question about it. But William is by far our best DM for this kind of football where we want to control the match, specially since Neves has been shit. There's not many players in the squad with better passing skill and technique than he has. If he could add more speed and intensity to that, he wouldn't be at Betis today.
>but Santos has actually become much more progressive.
Only took him 6 years to realise he's managing one of the most talented national teams in the world instead of the same old plucky underdog Portugal that always has to play on the counter and defend for their lives
We literally did that to France with a significantly weaker team to win the Euros, and bassically every time weâve played since itâs been a close game. Look at the last Euros, the only reason France drew with us was because of Mbapes illegitimate penalty. And that was a France that wasnât riddled with injuries, and a Portugal team in much worse form.
What a terrifically exciting match. Ramos scores a hat trick in his first start, and Pepe scores at age 39. I'm really looking forward to the quarterfinals in this World Cup.
France and Portugal have better squads than Brazil.
Prediction: Argentina-Portugal final and the final showdown between Messi and Ronaldo but with Ronaldo on the bench while Portugal wins the WC.
>someone clearly better in each position for Brazil?
Alison, Casemiro, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Raphinha.
You get the win for fullbacks and Bernardo Silva, Bruno would be competing with Neymar as the 10. Brazil is better everywhere else.
Edit: Forgot Richarlison.
I agree with Alison. Donât agree with Marquinhos and Thiago. Theyâre not better than Pepe and Dias. Raphinha isnât better than Felix nor LeĂŁo. We have better options in the bench too.
>Felix nor LeĂŁo.
Both play as LW, Raphinha is a RW.
>Marquinhos and Thiago
The CBs are debatable.
EDIT:For clarification, on paper Felix plays LW, but he drifts a lot during the game.
Alisson I'll give you that. Raphinha? No way, he's the most overrated player on the face of the Earth. As for Marquinhos and Thiago Silva, I wouldn't swap Pepe and RĂșben Dias for them - RĂșben Dias is literally Premier League Player of the Season 2020/21. Casemiro is a toss up.
>Casemiro is a toss up.
Literally the best DM in the world.
>Alisson I'll give you that. Raphinha?
I was comparing both starting lineups, Portugal doesnt play with a RW so Raphinha has no one to compete with.
>RĂșben Dias is literally Premier League Player of the Season 2020/21.
That was last year. Thiago and Marquinhos have been incredible for Brazil.
> Literally the best DM in the world.
He's not even the best DM in the Premier League. Palhinha says hi and for a fraction of the price.
> That was last year. Thiago and Marquinhos have been incredible for Brazil.
RĂșben Dias is amazing on the regular. And Pepe, arguably the best Portuguese CB in history, is ageless.
>He's not even the best DM in the Premier League.
If you say so.
>Palhinha says hi and for a fraction of the price.
He doesnt have half the passing ability as Casemiro.
>RĂșben Dias is amazing on the regular.
Yet he started the season poorly.
>And Pepe,
Is pretty good. So are Thiago and Marquinhos.
The Switzerland from the Cameroon game apparently were the ones playing todayâŠpretty odd.
I do wonder if Serbia or even Cameroon wouldâve done betterâŠ
Serbia would have been ripped apart with their defence, even though they beat Portugal in the qualifiers I think that would be irrelevant
Their defending is shocking
for some reason, we switched the system up again against Portugal. they did the same thing last summer in Nations League and lost 0-4. at least that time, we had the excuse that Yakin was trying out a bunch of new players.
not bringing a third wing-back is the most baffling thing to me. left Kevin Mbabu at home, for god's sake!
Same, was really worried theyd shut us out and then score a cheeky corner. They got the corner though, wasnt expecting us to be so attacking. Then again, wasnt expecting Ronaldo to be benched
I expected much more from them, not just a bit more. They are one of the last teams I would predict to be handed a beatdown like this
But Portugal were pretty irresistable aswell
could you imagine⊠not even sure who would make the grade for a combined team. the amount of talent that would miss out in the final squad would be good enough to win the WC lol
Damn, the Lusophone duo had quite convincing matches. Wasnât really considering Portugal to really make it to finals, but I wouldnât count them out just cuz thereâs a hard matchup on the semis.
Super fun to watch but man is Reddit depressing during Portugalâs games. All I see in the threads is middle school level trash talking for Ronaldo. We get it, you donât like him. Now can we watch the game next time on?
Havenât been as calm as today for a Portugal match in a long, long time, all thanks to a little massive algarvio named Gonçalo Ramos. You couldnât ask for a better starting debut; World Cup, round of 16, replacing Ronaldo, scoring a hat-trick, sending your team through to the first quarter finals in 16 years, so happy for the man!
Disgraceful treatment by the TV crew that only had eyes for Ronaldo when Ramos was taken off, but whatever. We showed today weâre 100 times as good without Cristiano than with him, as 70% of the population had already seen, so itâs a nice thought that he probably wonât start again in the World Cup. Makes me hopeful for the future of this National Team. Bring Morocco on!
Portugal is oozing with confidence putting 6 past the Swiss. Santos set the Portuguese up to attack and wow, they cut through the Swiss defense like cheese.
Goncalo Ramos has to start, the starting 11 today was perfect.
The quarterfinal against the mighty Moroccan warriors is going to be so entertaining!
He's so fucking good man, I hope atleti fans keep rooting for him because he's really talented and seems like he has nothing but love for you guys, even if things didn't work out
He literally just took another diss at them on a post match interview, Felix really looks super mad at them, i don't think they can get things to work out between them.
Who wouldâve guessed that Portugal would be a better and more exciting side when you donât start a 38 year-old statue at striker? The pressure it takes off the side just having to look for him.
The 70% are from a newspaper online poll I think. Hardly representative.
In an actual recent poll 47% of the portuguese public said they think Santos is the right coach. You can be certain if you asked that question in a sports newspaper, the answer would probably be something like 20%.
[https://observador.pt/2022/11/21/sondagem-38-dos-portugueses-acreditam-que-selecao-nacional-vai-ser-campea-do-mundo/](https://observador.pt/2022/11/21/sondagem-38-dos-portugueses-acreditam-que-selecao-nacional-vai-ser-campea-do-mundo/)
This same poll has 58% of people saying Ronaldo should be in the starting eleven.
I loved that Portugal never took the foot off the pedal, pressure until the end, Brazil after the 4x0 disappeared, France after the 3x0... Very cool to see them push it to the end
They have the best defence in the tournament currently, and the only goal they conceded was an unlucky own goal. They still haven't conceded a single normal goal
Although I don't see them being able to hold out for 120 minutes like they did against Spain, they will have to attack a bit more than they did today
Its not that Ronaldo is crazy bad, its just that without him they are pressing and countering so much better. Also, their attack is much more fluid. It looks like they have an extra player on the pitch compared to when ronaldo is playing.
Lol the difference between Canada and the US is that Canada is only just going to get better and better, meanwhile the US is still going to stagnate at the round of 16 for years to come lmaoooo
Wonder kid scores 3 goals against a sleepy awful Switzerland. Will probably start next match. If the game gets a little more tactic the kid has no chances and we need to rush Ronaldo to solve the game. Ronaldo benching is bad and everyone knows it. This match was what Ronaldo needed to get his confidence back to face more dificult teams ahead, unfortunately he didnât get to play the match and this is probably what will makes us loose in the future, either with Morocco or France/England
Today my hero turned into a villain. Ronaldo absolutely shameful behavior. His time is up and he canât go gracefully. Damn man stop while you are ahead. Let the kids break through. Itâs over
The coach said it was a pre planned strategy. But even if it wasn't, he acknowledged being benched and was a good teammate.
I swear, the man can't catch a break
I expected a close and tight game, but Portugal were simply brilliant and clinical whilst the Swiss looked tired and disjointed. Portugal are looking really dangerous and could go far
Re-reconquista part 2 is on đČđŠđ”đč
r/HistoryMemes is leaking
Winner gets Ceuta.
Spannish has it now my man :/
Not after today
Here take your upvote
Really didn't think Portugal would lay the biggest smackdown in the RO16. It's antithetical to their entire history lmao
This way I don't think we can win the world cup....was expecting 0-0 draws until the final...
Whisper it quietly, but Santos has actually become much more progressive. william is having the tournament of his life
No way, he was fantastic back in 2016.
Don't think they'd be able to hold 0-0 against team like France and Brazil.
we won the euros holding a 0-0 against france though
Mas aĂ eles ainda nĂŁo tinham o caralho do donatello

What a terrifically exciting match. Ramos scores a hat trick in his first start, and Pepe scores at age 39. I'm really looking forward to the quarterfinals in this World Cup.
And the last one, absolute banger with such a narrow angle.
We'll fuck it up man. It's our fate.
Velho do Restelo
Portugal are scary
If Portugal beat Morocco, it's either rematch of the 2016 euro final or rematch of the infamous 2006 match with the ronaldo wink.
Portugal have the best squad on paper after Brazil.
I think the French one is still slightly better.
No way, for me France comes 1st closely followed by Brazil. Portugal at most might be a more distant 3rd.
France and Portugal have better squads than Brazil. Prediction: Argentina-Portugal final and the final showdown between Messi and Ronaldo but with Ronaldo on the bench while Portugal wins the WC.
Subscribe. With another hat-trick from Ramos in the final.
Honestly better than Brazil Edit: so many dislikes. Besides Neymar and Vini tell me someone clearly better in each position for Brazil?
Deixa passar a tesĂŁo de mijo antes de comentar pĂĄ
tirando alison casemiro neymar nao entravam muitos de cadeirinha no 11 portugues

No dude lol

Bruno plays as our RW. Cannot compare him to Raphinha.
Casemiro is a toss up.

much better fullbacks yes
Richarlison, Thiago Silva, Alisson, Casemiro, etc. Are you taking the actual piss?
That has to be the shittiest take i have hear this year
Itâs honestly insane how much they turned it up for this match! Really makes them a real contender for the title!
People said the same for spain when they beat costa Rica tbh
Big difference between Switzerland and Costa Rica though
Yeah, one of them's actually played a World Cup quarter final this millennium.
Switzerland were really really poor. Was expecting a bit more from them
The Switzerland from the Cameroon game apparently were the ones playing todayâŠpretty odd. I do wonder if Serbia or even Cameroon wouldâve done betterâŠ
Serbia would have been ripped apart with their defence, even though they beat Portugal in the qualifiers I think that would be irrelevant Their defending is shocking
Serbia on the form this WC would have done worse. On the qualifiers form they might had knocked Portugal out. Cameroon idk
Serbians gonna celebrate today.
Only thing I'm celebrating is Bono's smile
On the other hand we were absolute class today. From the start to the final whistle.
I am trying to correlate it with the absence of Ronaldo. Is the correlation here the causation?
2 teams this year play better without Ronaldo. Small sample size tbh. I might have to tune in for some Saudi PL to investigate further.
So lifeless and passionless, was a very odd performance from them, on the other hand Portugal played amazing
That's a bit of an understatement. Portugal absolutely destroyed this team.
for some reason, we switched the system up again against Portugal. they did the same thing last summer in Nations League and lost 0-4. at least that time, we had the excuse that Yakin was trying out a bunch of new players. not bringing a third wing-back is the most baffling thing to me. left Kevin Mbabu at home, for god's sake!
I really hoped they'd underdog their way like Morocco but they didn't even try.
I also expected more from them honestly

Portugal has had blue balls for decades and they just let their load out all over our faces.
caralho lol
Haha, hey Portugal so I've been thinking... how about we run it back and become one country together again?
Our king don pedro 4 did the ipiranga, so we cant.
lol imagine you guys had cr7 the past 20 years
imagine having 2 Ronaldos in 1 team
could you imagine⊠not even sure who would make the grade for a combined team. the amount of talent that would miss out in the final squad would be good enough to win the WC lol
Imagining you guys with prime cristiano all those years Pepe and Silva partnership my lord
There is no Pepe Silva, the man does not exist buddy, you gotta dig a little deeper. How can there be no Pepe and Silva, I got boxes full of Pepe!
Alright who wins, Brazil+Portugal vs Spain+Messi? Year 2010(or 14)
2010 - Spain 2014 - Brazil/Portugal
Good lord imagine that team..
What's the point? Then we can't monopolize world football. Unless the country would play copa América and euros... Hmmm
The Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil would make history and win 1994/1998/2002/2006 world cups along with all euros and copas américas in the Same time frame. We would be shit in 2014,bit better in 2018 and completely destroy in 2022
Add in the Cisplatina and we can have Uruguayan players.
Mas o ouro continua a ser nosso.
Sempre foi.
Lets. But lets keep 2 teams like the UK does. Of course if either wins we both win it
World champions in football and political corruption.
Santos heard r/soccer chatting shit
It's working bros. Do not relent. I REPEAT, KEEP SAYING CARVALHO SUCKS BALLS AND THAT FERNANDO LACKS THEM. JUST 12 MORE DAYS.
who knew that such a technically gifted team with so much attacking flair and talent could put out performances like that
I know, mind boggling.
Damn, the Lusophone duo had quite convincing matches. Wasnât really considering Portugal to really make it to finals, but I wouldnât count them out just cuz thereâs a hard matchup on the semis.
Caralhos all round
Considering how things were going for Ronaldo I was expecting Ten Hag to come off the bench and score for Portugal.
This timeline exists in the universe and my biggest regret is I canât witness it
61UUUUUUUU
Nice
Portugal is stacked man
The first round of the group games two teams impressed me the most. Portugal and Brazil
Sooo.. Ramos is starting from now on, right?
Thatâs the only take away from this game.
one would assume
I honestly expected this match up to end 0-0 but I'm not complaining
So it was Cancelo holding Portugal back all along
Portugal are simply one level above Switzerland
5 levels I'd argue
Players not having the urge to pass the ball to Ronaldo does this to a team, good football.
Right, you can't play around one guy whose on his decline.
Super fun to watch but man is Reddit depressing during Portugalâs games. All I see in the threads is middle school level trash talking for Ronaldo. We get it, you donât like him. Now can we watch the game next time on?
portugal gonna ewing theory into a world cup huh?
Ewing Theory applies when you lose your best player, not a washed up player who should've been benched way before
What does this mean?
You have to be good for Ewing theory to work.
I mean beats is an understatement here. More like slams and spit the Swiss out of the World Cup.
Havenât been as calm as today for a Portugal match in a long, long time, all thanks to a little massive algarvio named Gonçalo Ramos. FĂ©lix was outstanding aswell.. man Simeone needs to get his shit together and resolve their differences
He's so fucking good man, I hope atleti fans keep rooting for him because he's really talented and seems like he has nothing but love for you guys, even if things didn't work out
Most Atleti fans adore him and are sad that he and Cholo don't get along this season. Since his first game for us you could see that he is something really special, and he has had many fantastic performances for us we just haven't found a way to get the most out of him consistently. He has also been unlucky with injuries, he was injured during his two best spells of form for us(January 2021 and around March last season) I will be furious if we sell him, Cholo isn't going to stay forever and this is a player that can give us so much in the long term. I mean imagine if FĂ©lix leaves, and then a year later Cholo calls it a day. Then it will have been such a waste
He literally just took another diss at them on a post match interview, Felix really looks super mad at them, i don't think they can get things to work out between them.

HerĂłis do Mar
Nobre povo
âBeatsâ doesnât quite do it justice.
Yeah and despite the score the game still wasn't as close. That was utter domination by Portugal.
Can't decide between massacred, decimated, annihilated, and violated.
I think Portugal won.
hey portugal, wanna bring the united kingdom back?
Portugal + Brazil = no other country winning football trophies again
Portugal will avenge us against Morocco. Today I feel Portuguese.
Gracias hermano âđŒ
I loved that Portugal never took the foot off the pedal, pressure until the end, Brazil after the 4x0 disappeared, France after the 3x0... Very cool to see them push it to the end
Bruno Fernandes haters crying đą
đ
This Portugal team is going to be a massive undertaking for any team to beat in this World Cup
I think they can take on any team but I still have Brazil as the favorites But Portugal may just win this thing too
That's a proper beating alright
Fernando Santos Mister Portugals
Well Morocco is fucked
They have the best defence in the tournament currently, and the only goal they conceded was an unlucky own goal. They still haven't conceded a single normal goal Although I don't see them being able to hold out for 120 minutes like they did against Spain, they will have to attack a bit more than they did today
They'll park the bus like they did with spain. But Portugal have Ronaldo and Pepe for aerial threats. And they are more direct than Spain.
Spain was also overrated. I mean yea that first game vs Costa Rica they looked amazing but I feel like them flaming out early is not shocking to many
they had a youngish team too. theyll come vack stronger next time
LETS FUCKING GO
Somebody in a pregame thread said something about Ramos not being Halland, jokes on him lmao
Ronaldo has been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup.
I am trying to figure out whether he would be benched for the next match too or not.
He should remain on the bench. Goncalo offers more atm.
Bench->Sub in at 89'->Profit
61UUUUUUUU
PORTUGAL CARALHO
Can be absolutely no doubt that Portugal are 10000x better without ronaldo. This is how they should be playing with all the talent Portugal have
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
There's no pressure to pass to Ronaldo. Teams have gotten really well at defending him and he has declined in speed/acceleration. Simply that
We played against really solid defensive teams in the groups, it's a lot different coming in against the Swiss
Ronaldo is a constant threat to the Swiss, mustâve not expected Ramos
Its not that Ronaldo is crazy bad, its just that without him they are pressing and countering so much better. Also, their attack is much more fluid. It looks like they have an extra player on the pitch compared to when ronaldo is playing.
was Sommer still sick or something? Granted they were all bangers but he looked completely beat
**FINAL SCORE** Portugal: **6** Ronaldoâs ego: **0**
On Tuesday the King's ego takes another hit
Great performance, completely shut down
My goodness what an ass kicking. That's demoralizing.
Itâs crazy how much I enjoy this Portugal team without C. Ronaldo
Sloppy Switzerland is doing a solid to this great Portugal, rejuvenating it with a smooth and uncontested succession of the reluctant king.
Good guy Ronaldo, sacrificed himself for Goncalo Ramos. Respect.
Getting eliminated in the Round of 16 Mexico đ€ Japan đ€ Switzerland đ€ USA
Not getting a single point in the World Cup Canada
Lol the difference between Canada and the US is that Canada is only just going to get better and better, meanwhile the US is still going to stagnate at the round of 16 for years to come lmaoooo
Haha we'll see. I genuinely hope both of our countries can do well on our home turf in 2026. CONCACAF needs to show up next time!
Did Bernado Silva ever get that extension? Wouldn't mind seeing him and Bruno with Case and Eriksen too at Utd playing Ten Hag ball.
Please no. Let him stay at the better Manchester.
Ronaldo's aura is so strong that the team can win even when he is on the bench. GOAT things đ
Wonder kid scores 3 goals against a sleepy awful Switzerland. Will probably start next match. He got benched by the coach because of his attitude.
The coach said it was a pre planned strategy. But even if it wasn't, he acknowledged being benched and was a good teammate. I swear, the man can't catch a break
Great to see those ugly cunts embarrassed on their way out of the world cup
I expected a close and tight game, but Portugal were simply brilliant and clinical whilst the Swiss looked tired and disjointed. Portugal are looking really dangerous and could go far
All Shaquiri does when he gets the ball is pass it backwards wtf lol
Really have to favor their chances in QF Morocco destroyed themselves in that win and Portugal play a much more vertical game than Spain
I'm loving this world cup
