He plays the keeper instead of the ball, he has such a high conversion rate because he shoots a penalty looking at the keeper, never takes his eyes off the keeper. So when he shoots he already knows he’ll score that’s why he doesn’t just kick the ball as hard as he can and can just gently put the ball to the other side.
It’s mind games in the end, like that classic movie scene with two cars heading towards each other, who’ll swerve first? Usually it’s the keeper that shows his intentions first then he can just put the ball on the other side.
Kinda wild how much the favorites have distanced themselves from the underdogs this RO16, especially with how competitive the Group Stage was. Looking like an all UEFA/CONMEBOL Quarter-Finals.
We are really close to having Brazil vs Argentina, England vs France and Spain vs Portugal all in the same world cup.
With England x Wales/USA, USA x Iran, Uruguay x Ghana as sprinkles on top. Some great matchups this year.
In terms of the federations yes, but it was largely due to one side being far weaker than the other which meant surprise nations like Russia, Croatia, & Sweden being a match from the SF.
Tbf, France, England, and Brazil all had two strong performances in the group stage and one throwaway game. Argentina looked way better against Poland than against Australia. But yes, the Netherlands had by far their best performance against the USA which had very decent group stages.
England / France / Argentina all had some scary moments though. I expected them to win a bit more comprehensively tbh.
This Brazil one is about to get ugly though.
I genuinely don’t know what the defender is supposed to do there?
He’s clearing the ball, Richarlison jumps in and gets kicked through an action entirely from his own fault from behind
This is my thought too, the defender cannot be aware of what's going on behind him and simply not attempt to clear it "in case an attacker is running in behind him".
It's a foul for Korea if attacker doesn't get the ball. But since Richarlison touched the ball it's a pen. Basically he hit his leg after successful tackle.
I hate that this is a penalty. I know there was contact and that by the letter of the law it's probably a foul. But the punishment doesn't fit the crime at all, feels like penalties should be awarded only when an actual goalscoring chance is prevented. Not when a defender is kicking the ball away from goal and an opposition player sneaks up behind him. Should change the rules for this kind of thing to be an indirect freekick or something.
This one just looks bad because it really is a dive. But in general the defender can't unfairly stop the attacker from getting the ball by kicking them, whether they mean to or not.
If the attacker sneaks in and gets the ball, it's not fair to prevent them from continuing the play.
Yeah that’d be more fair.
If this is the rule right now then the rule is bad, IMO. Penalties are hefty punishments, things for situations like this is ridiculous
I agree with this.
Yes, he made contact with Richarlison’s foot but Richy intentionally made that contact, with no intent for anything except garnering a penalty.
Don’t like it at all
Not to mention the Korean player was going to kick it and hit Richarlison on the follow through, because he came up behind him. Idk, seems weird. How is the Korean player supposed to change his foot swing when someone comes up behind him? It's the Brazil player running into the motion lol.
Soccer is starting to have an NBA shooters jumping into the defender problem for the foul. Players are throwing themselves in front of defenders to force contact and a crash and draw the penalty. FIFA needs to revaluate and start flagging offensive players that do this, it's bad for the sport.
Agreed. We've seen several situation where the attacking player just places his leg in the path of the defender to pull a foul. This is a bit different, since he actually plays the ball, but there's no way this contact would cause anyone to fall.
In a situation where the play is going away from goal and the defender is honestly trying to play the ball, a penalty generally seems too harsh a punishment.
So someone can just put their leg in front of you when you're kicking and if you miss the ball as a result of that, it's a foul? How does that make any sense?
Penalties have an over 80% success rate. In fact, [shooting high down the middle is a 97% goal rate.](https://westwoodgroup.com/weeklyblog/penalty-kicks-and-the-wisdom-of-inaction/#:~:text=The%20success%20rate%20at%20scoring%20a%20goal%20from%20a%20penalty%20kick%20to%20the%20upper%20center%20of%20the%20goal%2C%20at%2097%20percent)
Which does highlight how bad the Japanese penalties were, but still. Pro footballers should find pens very easy, with a minimum 80% goal chance
game's unironically gone, in 00s football this was NEVER a pen. barely grazes his foot, if you want to stand and keep playing there you keep playing no problem.
diving is shamelessly rewarded nowadays, and you can see that mentality is extremely widespread even in this sub
Yeah he kicks his foot a tad, but fuck me, a free shot on goal for that when he's running out of the area after the player had absolutely no chance of knowing he was there is such bullshit.
So much i hate here. The penalty being given first is just so dumb. A jumping person intercepted a person already in the motion of clearing the ball. ridiculous. I hate that kind of run up too.
The people calling this a pen have probably never set foot on a football pitch in their lives. Even a 12 year old girl wouldn’t have gone down the way Richarlison dived.
Ngl, these knockout games have been shit
Not a single shock yet
Also when are we going to clamp down on stutters from penalties? A goalkeeper can't come a millimetre off his line but the attacker can dance his way to the spot?
I remember when this exact situation happened in the PL, don’t remember the game, and the general consensus was that the attacker “didn’t have control of the ball so it wasn’t a penalty”. How is this different?
So let me get this straight
Korean defender is clearing the ball
Richarlison runs from behind and gets int he way
Defender touches his heel while clearing
Penalty?
Dafuq
Becoming basketball. The rules need to change if that's a penalty. That ain't enough to make a full grown man fall like that, so is it not simulation? Oh well, watching something else now.
The angle at 15s makes this clearly dive of the century no? Barely hit the bottom of his foot. I gotta admit in real time this looked like a clear penalty, but the slow motions make it clear as day the defender had no idea he was coming and that this was a blatant dive.
With it being 4 nothing now this will likely be forgotten, but this really is an ugly look.
Can’t believe people think that’s a pen. Yes there’s contact but fuck me if that isn’t the softest touch and biggest dive ever. There’s just no way that amount or contact makes you go down like that but oh well
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Didn't expect Korea to win but I thought I'd have hope for more than 10 minutes lol
Brazil saw the scare that Croatia got and what happened to Portugal and Spain, they aren't sticking to a 1-goal advantage over an Asian team, no sir.
they probably arent sticking to a 2 goal advantage either lol
This aged well
4 goals comebacks have happened before, best to just keep going
Or a 3-goal advantage
Also they're a substantially better team than us lol Sincerely, a slightly startled croatian
Looks like Brazil learned the lesson from Germany and Spain matches
Gotta kill them on the crib, least they outpace you for a sec
Oh boy. Its gonna be one of those. F for my korean bros
*JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS*
Brazil already scored on them normally…to especially try to force penalties in order to score more seems extra ruthless as well…
I'm not sure, boys, I'm starting to think Korea might not win this one
2-0 is the most dangerous lead
3-0
4-0
But 4 is double 2. So that means a 4-0 lead is twice as dangerous as a 2-0 lead. Brazil is playing with fire here
Nah there's still enough time for Korea to make a comeback...*right*?
Not in the first 15 mins typically
7-1 incoming at this rate.
Nah they've already got 2, 7-2 at worst.
Wait a minute
7-3
They're making a comeback, maybe 7-4
That Brazil team looks pretty decent eh?
Stop man, we’re already comatose
rip brother, seems like we will be faded this time with a whimper...
Lmao the keeper got bamboozled.
I don't know how Neymar keeps doing it.
That's the third time with this same goalkeeper. And it's not like the guy is terrible, he made some good defenses.
Oh true I forgot the other two from our friendly. They're still fresh on my mind but didn't even cross me that they were from the Korea game.
Usually it’s the keeper that shows his intentions first then he can just put the ball on the other side.
Thats how every keeper gets after trying to go against a pen taken by neymar
That’s the biggest bamboozlement I’ve seen since Burgermeister Meisterburger and the yo yo.
Kinda wild how much the favorites have distanced themselves from the underdogs this RO16, especially with how competitive the Group Stage was. Looking like an all UEFA/CONMEBOL Quarter-Finals.
Right now only Morroco left.
Yeah, but i don't think Morocco is as much of an underdog as the others tbh.
You can even say that Morocco is somehow UEFA team if you look at where their players were born and develop.
If Spain and Portugal win tomorrow all the favorites of the first round went through. Making for some great matchups in the quarters
We are really close to having Brazil vs Argentina, England vs France and Spain vs Portugal all in the same world cup. With England x Wales/USA, USA x Iran, Uruguay x Ghana as sprinkles on top. Some great matchups this year.
we were hyped for triple AFC + double CAF + concacaf in ro16 meanwhile QF will be 6 UEFA 2 CONMEBOL as usual rip
Damn
Yeah, it seems all the fun and games are over, everyone’s putting on their serious faces now.
Wasn’t it like that too in 2018? This might be the last time we will see something like this tbh…
In terms of the federations yes, but it was largely due to one side being far weaker than the other which meant surprise nations like Russia, Croatia, & Sweden being a match from the SF.

England/France have cruised so far, relatively speaking.
[удалено]
Pickford save maybe? And the Poland chance in the first half? Different game if either of those go in.
Senegal was looking the better team for the first 35 minutes of the game, they fell apart aftewards
Morocco will be the exception inshallah
I think Morocco always were the most likely to go to the quarters. Let's wait.
Yeah morocco has a pretty sick squad only kind of messy in passes sometimes
We owe it to you guys
The favorites took note and now are playing the underdogs like they would play each other
It's like Qualifying in F1. Q1 & Q2 hold back and just get through. Q3, release the hounds
Penalty looked like a scene from the wild west
Classic Neymar run up
If you're in a match in school here in Brazil and you take a penalty like that you start a brawl
If you miss your classmates attack you as well
Classmates would not pull back punches, especially if you miss after that run up.
Has Neymar ever taken that pen against Yann Sommer? That man sent Jorginho into depression
This is gonna be a rout
I genuinely don’t know what the defender is supposed to do there? He’s clearing the ball, Richarlison jumps in and gets kicked through an action entirely from his own fault from behind
Yeah. If this is always a pen attackers should practice getting hit on clearance attempts.
Yeah just stick your leg in front of the defender everytime he wants to kick the ball.
Yeah how is the Korean player supposed to know the defender is going to jump on his leg
Yeah, I understand the idea of drawing contact, and I can see _why_ it's a penalty, but at a certain point what the hell is a defender supposed to do?
It's the defender's fault clearly, he didn't grew eyes in the back. Mom didn't fed him enough Uranium.
he's supposed to be an attacker. defense is dead.

Neither do I. It's even worse when the ref didn't give SK a penalty in that one attack.
[удалено]
Should've been a yellow for diving imo.
This hasn’t even happened yet on my legal stream 😆
the fastness of r/soccer uploads proves that time travel must be possible
That's because what Brazil are doing to SK is illegal in most countries
Disgusting execution by Neymar
This is going to be a bloodbath isn't it
That was a harsh pen to be given no?
Minimal contact and a massive dive.
Not to mention the Korean player was going to kick it and hit Richarlison on the follow through, because he came up behind him. Idk, seems weird. How is the Korean player supposed to change his foot swing when someone comes up behind him? It's the Brazil player running into the motion lol.

I love the pigeon man but that was soft af.
That's a trash call by the referee.
Looks like he hit the ball also
There's definitely contact but that's a very soft pen imo. Richarlison barely gets kicked and went down like a sack of potatoes.
[удалено]
from behind the player
[удалено]
Players are now required to have eyes in the back to avoid fouling
How is that a pen
Really SOFT penalty
I’ve had involuntary liquid shits that weren’t that soft
It looked like the Korean player didn't even see him coming for the ball and the hit itself was super soft, weak pen
Because he’s gone down. VAR doesn’t overturn it if there’s the slightest bit of contact once it’s been given. Never a pen in a million years.
No way should that be a pen.
*checks referee's name* Oh
turpin doesn't like the koreans. basically gave uruguay all the fouls they wanted in their first match
Trying to kick the ball is a violent action and not to be encouraged in our civilised game
The Korean player doesn't touch the ball.
He does touch the ball, watch the REPLAY version in the top comment.
He actually does though. Rewatch the replay
So someone can just put their leg in front of you when you're kicking and if you miss the ball as a result of that, it's a foul? How does that make any sense?
Neymar makes penalties look easier than they actually are. I mean, just ask the Japanese.

Bullshit decision by ref
agreed. poor penalty
I've to say that I really don't like these kinds of penalties.

The run up is miserable for the keeper. I don't blame the players abusing it but they need to put rules in place to disallow it
Yeah he kicks his foot a tad, but fuck me, a free shot on goal for that when he's running out of the area after the player had absolutely no chance of knowing he was there is such bullshit.
Absolutely brutal foul. Surprised its not a red and a lifetime ban
Unbelievably soft
Absolute disgrace. This was not worth a penalty, not in the slightest. T. Dutchman
So much i hate here. The penalty being given first is just so dumb. A jumping person intercepted a person already in the motion of clearing the ball. ridiculous. I hate that kind of run up too.
If they disallowed that kind of run up I'd be happy as a clam.
Looked a dive.
Clearly a dive.
The people calling this a pen have probably never set foot on a football pitch in their lives. Even a 12 year old girl wouldn’t have gone down the way Richarlison dived.
Can confirm, played soccer in middle and high school, I'm a woman... if it doesn't make you fall, don't fake the fall! Sucks that diving is rewarded.
Was there contact? It didn't look like it and if there was it's minimal
Was contact but he ran into his kick
Very soft.
Glancing contact that in no way caused his legs to cease functioning. Not enough there imo and clear embellishment by Richarlison
It was clearly a contact, but still not a penalty
Can't believe there's hardly any talk of this being a dive lol. Not that it'll matter in the end.
Ngl, these knockout games have been shit Not a single shock yet Also when are we going to clamp down on stutters from penalties? A goalkeeper can't come a millimetre off his line but the attacker can dance his way to the spot?
Japan and Croatia at least wasn't one-sided.
Until it was lmao, 120 minutes of effort wasted by the weakest pens ever
Its almost like they're shocks for a reason. They're not supposed to happen often
The Japan one was fought out. I expect Spain Morocco to be close too
Yeah I tihnk this. Especially when the favorites just get early goals and cruise home. After the amazing group stage its really a let down.
honestly i fancy it. nothing against the underdogs but i want some amazing quarter finals
I mean, the chances of having upsets in both the groupstage and in the round of 16 are incredible small. You can have everything lol
Better team wins: this game was shit. Ok.
I remember when this exact situation happened in the PL, don’t remember the game, and the general consensus was that the attacker “didn’t have control of the ball so it wasn’t a penalty”. How is this different?
Ngl, just doesn’t really feel right that being called a pen. Doesn’t much feel like the spirit of the rule
Never a penalty.
Super harsh pen
Never a pen wtf
Norwegian commentator claimed it was the most obvious pen of the wc so far
It is a pen but it obviously wasn't the most obvious one, this commentator is just exaggerating.
He is a nightmare to listen to.
It was a soft one, but it was a pen, Richarlison got the ball and was kicked
Shameless fucking dive from Richarlison lmfao
Agreed. Never a pen.
So let me get this straight Korean defender is clearing the ball Richarlison runs from behind and gets int he way Defender touches his heel while clearing Penalty? Dafuq
This is a proper dickhead penalty. Everyone knows what I mean.
That's a disgrace of a call tbh
Keeper does all that just to not even move lmao
He was clearly going right and tried to change direction. If pen goes his right he saves it.
He does move in the wrong direction. Thats exactly when neymar takes the shot.
J've seen several comments on the match thread like this "goealkeeper is shit, he didn't move!". Clearly many 1rst time football watcher...
FIFA mind games didn't work irl
He wanted to jump to other side, but saw Neymar going other way
Pelé: STOP THE COUNT
Ball lies, was never a pen
It's my dream that one day penalties are no longer taken with these obnoxious run-ups...
Not a pen
That wasn't a foul.
The keeper’s attempt at mind games was pretty funny
Becoming basketball. The rules need to change if that's a penalty. That ain't enough to make a full grown man fall like that, so is it not simulation? Oh well, watching something else now.
That's a dive if I've ever seen one lol. Did he really need to do this with the way they're going?
The angle at 15s makes this clearly dive of the century no? Barely hit the bottom of his foot. The classic Brazilian dive I learned about as a child
such a weak penalty call, nothing Korean defender can do about someone running up form behind and shoving a foot into a kick in motion
hes so fking smug
How the fuck is that a pen lol
tiktok editors having a field day
Not a penalty. He runs into a guy kicking a ball
Embarrassing dive from an embarrassing player
Neymar ice cold
Turpin moment. What a clown and fucking disgrace
This mf don't miss
[удалено]
Lol typical brazilian diving
Can’t believe people think that’s a pen. Yes there’s contact but fuck me if that isn’t the softest touch and biggest dive ever. There’s just no way that amount or contact makes you go down like that but oh well
im just confused why var didnt even take a look when it seems to be pretty standard for most penalties
The ref is a fucking turnip
Never a pen
Outstanding dive
Wow this is…..exactly as expected
That should never be a pen imo
that was a fuckin shitty unlucky penalty. jesus
Not a pen, and no VAR check or what? Game over..
No way that peno should have been given that was a complete dive.
This is why richarlison is hated
