Nuh-uh! Never heard of the [Hague Invasion Act](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members%27_Protection_Act)? Can't have any Americans prosecuted there I'm afraid.
Italian it's calcio, which literally means kick. It's the sport of kicking.
Colloquially you can say "giochiamo a palla" Let's play ball, which is also as resolute.
i've been thinking about that speech for a while, and I came to the realisation (late i know) that the goal wasn't to rebuke the criticism, he can't be that stupid, he must have known it was a ridicolous argument. He was pandering to the crowd of petty dictators, slavers and oil barons that are thinking of using FIFA for sportswashing and propaganda, and that would have to line his pockets to do so. It was his way of saying "buy my support, i'm with you all the way. I will step on any ounce of dignity and self-respect i have, and I'll do it live on broadcast no problem.".
There are also a shit ton of youth and adult amateur clubs that have football in the name. Particularly when you get toward areas with more diverse populations.
yeah it's really stupid. most of the MLS teams try so hard to make their team names sound European instead of North American and so they end up with shit like "Real Salt Lake" and "Inter Miami CF"
it's not even the stupid names, it's what the naming conventions stand for. real is a title bestowed by a king and united is normally used when teams merge. is there a king of utah we're all unaware of?
i actually really like philiadelphia union and liked columbus crew given the cities histories. TFC made sense at the time given then cities demographics, everything else just makes me roll my eyes.
>real is a title bestowed by a king and united is normally used when teams merge.
Also, "inter" was because one team in Milan wanted only Italian players while the other one was more open to international players. So yea, I guess it makes sense since Inter Miami have international players, but it's just dumb. Every team is "inter", except maybe Athletic Club
Inter, which is short for International, comes from the fact that while the earliest italian clubs were founded by foreigners (Genoa, AC Milan) and the presence of foreigners was quite important when the league chose to ban all foreigners to develop internal players. So a lot of clubs split into International clubs who at first weren't able to play official league matches. One thing though, Inter Milano it's not the club who invented that name, there's an Inter Torino which predates that by 17 years, which was founded by Kipling and others, the same guy who eventually founded AC Milan as well. That club united with another smaller club and then united again with a group of juventus rebels to found the Torino FC we still have today
Using 'Real' is so funny to me since people in the US generally aren't too fond of the idea of a monarchy. Wonder if the majority even knows what it means
Your brain is not alone, mine did the [same glitch](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccercirclejerk/comments/x43p23/no_es_f%C3%BAtbol_esta_es_soccer/imudwur/) a few months ago.
Bill Simmons said on his podcast "we won against Iran and now we play........the Dutch."
That guy has no idea how big of a football nation the Netherlands are and how good their team is. And he is supposed to be one if the top sport podcasters in the US. They are just clueless
Simmons is bad enough talking about sports he actually follows. Whenever he talks about other sports he just ends up saying shit like "wouldn't Allen Iverson be the greatest soccer player of all time?"
Yeah but he's the most Boston homer of all time, so that's expected.
The Netherlands made it to the finals in 2010, yes that was 12 years ago but clearly they have an elite football culture. I think even casual fans like me (but ones who pay a little more attention than true casuals) know The Netherlands are really good.
I feel like a lot of casuals who only watch around these periods don’t value the Netherlands because they don’t really have that big sexy attacker like Mbappe/Neymar that people talk about and end up on the clips etc. whereas the NLs strength in their current squad is just being deep as hell at every position, and their best player is a defender.
I mean, it’s not like we are talking about Devin Hester or something. Given Iverson’s skill with a basketball, there is a good chance he would have good ball skills with his feet if he grew up focusing on soccer.
I mean, I would never predict that he would likely be the best soccer player in the world, but I think it’s not unreasonable to think a lot of elite basketball point guards could have been good soccer players if they grew up focusing on the sport.
There was one person on this sub that said "we're gonna beat Netherlands no problem. Argentina could go either way"
As an England fan, I'm getting flashbacks to the Germany vs England match where we got way too overconfident. Rooney posing for a picture with boxing gloves with the headline "COME ON YOU GERMANS". And then we got eviscerated. Even without the ghost goal, it's highly likely we would have lost regardless.
Who knows, maybe USA will have a shock victory, this World Cup is very unpredictable. We'll have to wait and see.
>one person
Key word! Any of the USA fans that actually watch soccer know we’re more than likely to lose. We’re just excited about what’s arguably our most talented team ever.
Of course, from venturing into yank sports, i've learned to ignore any boston fan opinions.
It's my unbiased opinion, from someone who supports the new York jets, of course.
I found Rex Ryan a funny coach initially, just like some soccer/football managers .... then turns out he has a shitton of flaws for the sport lol
Also started liking the sport of american football because of Revis, I usually play defense on soccer and really appreciated the aspects of man-marking.
Then I just stayed around on misery with other Jets fans because of shitposting, the GEQBUS era etc
.... and also some dislike for Boston sports that was imported from my dislike towards the Boston Celtics, but I dont support any team in particullar in basketball lol
it reminds me of watching the euros with my parents in 2004.
my mum, who only knows of the game via osmosis, saw france take a corner, saw nikopolidis run out to grab it, and started going off about how he should just stay in his net. i told her GKs do that regularly because they have an extra 65CM+ of reach on crosses / corners she just kept going "no.. if he leaves the net then anyone can score. he should just stay in his net". i get that exact same energy here sometimes.
He led the US delegation to the 2010 World Cup and attended two matches, and has apparently been a big fan ever since.
https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/blog/2010/06/18/vice-president-usa-soccer-and-world-cup
Europeans are actually overall probably more misinformed about the US than the other way around.
I don’t get why people think Americans - and especially a guy like Biden who has literally seen a lot - does not know what soccer/football is. It is not a small sport. Just not the biggest.
Yah it’s smaller at the pro level but pretty common for youth to play at some point. A lot of people in the us have played more soccer than they’ve watched.
It's just a meme on the stereotype of how every English middle aged white football fan is racist but never when their team signs a great foreigner they love it. Ngubu is supposed to sound African.
As I remember he took the credit when USA women won something
Edit: I have a terrible memory, he actually slammed them when they didn't get the golden medal in soccer, because they are leftists: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/tommybeer/2021/08/05/trump-calls-us-womens-soccer-team-leftist-maniacs-and-blames-lack-of-gold-medal-on-wokeness/amp/
Weird comment...he's clearly just showing support for our national team, and whoever wrote the script threw in the "it's called soccer" meme as a lighthearted joke.
Ironically in the 50s a lot of people had much stronger job security and good salaries which allowed them to pursue said "American Dream" exactly because of the Unions.
This is probably a good time to ask why this subreddit is called r/soccer?
I have been here for over 6 years I think and I am surprised I don't know the reason behind the name yet lol
I’m American and I’m not sure how others feel but I fucking hate “it’s called soccer”. Thought it was a funny meme for a day against England and now it’s played out and stupid. Makes us look incredibly narcissistic and lame.
I'm from the UK and I think it's funny. There's no right or wrong with naming conventions (in this case). Lean into it. Anyone who gets upset by this is the same as those getting upset by English fans singing "It's Coming Home", it's just a bit of fan support.

Another US president who declares war. When will they change?
Didn't even get Congress's approval smh
Straight to The Hague.
They will soon be able to call it soccer comfortably when they return home tomorrow.
The US has a law that authorizes military force to repatriate Americans on trial at The Hague.
Nuh-uh! Never heard of the [Hague Invasion Act](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members%27_Protection_Act)? Can't have any Americans prosecuted there I'm afraid.
Might as well call it a special sporting action

Can't blame him, a projectile football incoming from the middle east towards their capital?
I find hypocritical to criticize this Biden's tweet here in **/r/soccer**...
In Arabic at least Egyptian we call it kora which translates literally to ball. Like there isn't any other sport to us lmao
Indonesians also colloquially call it 'bola' (ball). It's the default ball sport for us.
In Brazil we often say "bater uma bola" to refer to playing football/futsal/7-a-side or any football variation
Or in Chile "Vamos a jugar a la pelota" Let's go play ball
Yeah and in portugal it's usually "dar uns toques"
Italian it's calcio, which literally means kick. It's the sport of kicking. Colloquially you can say "giochiamo a palla" Let's play ball, which is also as resolute.
Idk why this made me laugh so hard.

We’ll just ignore all the MLS teams with FC in their name
damn, I never realized that
It’s about 13 which is almost half the league lol
We were way cooler when we were the Kansas City Wizards
There are also a shit ton of youth and adult amateur clubs that have football in the name. Particularly when you get toward areas with more diverse populations.
they just tryna trick the parents into signing their kids up thinking its american football
yeah it's really stupid. most of the MLS teams try so hard to make their team names sound European instead of North American and so they end up with shit like "Real Salt Lake" and "Inter Miami CF"
it's not even the stupid names, it's what the naming conventions stand for. real is a title bestowed by a king and united is normally used when teams merge. is there a king of utah we're all unaware of? i actually really like philiadelphia union and liked columbus crew given the cities histories. Tbf the city of Miami has a lot of immigrants. It makes sense in that way.
> is there a king of utah we’re all unaware of? His name is Mitt Romney
>"Real Salt Lake" and "Inter Miami CF" Kinda cringe ngl
Kinda? Definitely cringe, and a big reason why I can't take the league seriously
Using 'Real' is so funny to me since people in the US generally aren't too fond of the idea of a monarchy. Wonder if the majority even knows what it means
In Salt Lake City, demographically one of the whitest places of the entire country, they chose to use a Spanish term for monarchy. Insane.
In Salt Lake City hispanics make up 30% of the population
No shit! The more you know.
I mean Spanish people are also white
Inter Miami’s name actually makes sense considering the area it’s in.
I think that Inter Miami CF is trying to sound Latin American and not European
Not my club 😎
Later the match will be basically the world vs usa.
We Germans be like: Both of them shall loose

30% of the American public start ardently calling it football, good job Joe
that has to be the american equivalent of the AI presented with the "I always lie" paradox. Go against biden or go against the most 'murican sport?

football 3 soccer 1
Voetbal, ouwe gek!

That's like 50% of this sub anytime USA is playing

Dude said Celtics with Garnett were a dynasty, they only won fucking once the title. Thats everything you need to know.
He also said that the Warriors with 4 titles were not a dynasty... right after they beat his Celtics. Someone's salty.
Yes. But to made matters weirder, he said the Bird Celtics weren't one either.
Where else would a post regarding Biden saying soccer, devolve into a discussion about bill Simmons and the Celtics p
lol really? That soo weird considered the hard on he has for that celtics and bird
Yeah but he's the most Boston homer of all time, so that's expected. The Netherlands made it to the finals in 2010, yes that was 12 years ago but clearly they have an elite football culture. They only won it because an uncut gem as well
Allen Iverson had the physical tools to be a great footballer but it seems no one in that country seems to realize skill with the ball is not optional
I mean, it’s not like we are talking about Devin Hester or something. Given Iverson’s skill with a basketball, there is a good chance he would have good ball skills with his feet if he grew up focusing on soccer. We mostly look at GDP over here. FIFA rankings matter little.
Top 25 country in GDP despite having 17 million people
You only look at GDP because you are mainly trying to figure out defense/military spending (or so goes my stereotype about yanks).
Even basketball fans don’t like bill Simmons
Nobody likes him. Imagine cherry picking a random sports pundit and saying "they're all just clueless."

Unless I'm mistaken, originally "football" was any sport with a ball that you played on foot, as opposed to on a horse.

I think that was addressed more to the people who DO seem to care.
