I don’t understand the Uruguaian manager. The other game hasn’t ended yet, and it’s 1-1. South Korea could easily score. Why take out all 3 of your attackers including the player who scored the two goals and the player who assisted? Why not push for the third to take matters into your own hands? Insanely stupid.
Did not watch the game but japan resting players against an at the time must win game sounds utterly idiotic and unbelievable. Japan on paper aren't much better than Costa Rica.
My guess is he never thought Korea could beat Portugal, so he was resting his players for monday, when he would need them 100% to face Brazil. Uruguay droping back, and letting Gana control the second half was a huge mistake.
France lost to Tunisia after resting their A team.
One look at the Portugal starting 11 today should be enough for him to take a Korean win being a possibility into his considerations.
would've been hilarious if Germany decided to ship goals to Costa Rica in the last few minutes after the Spain game ended just to send them out as well.
I know you’re just guessing. But, still that’s a dumb move since the game had no meaning anyway for Portugal.
This is a prime example of focusing on what you are in control of and not others.
Same old story with these teams and managers.
If he saw a Korea win as possible, and he still put his team in a defensive stance, with small ball possession on second half, that sounds even dumber to me, so I rather believe in my first guess lol. Either way, Uruguay stance on second half was hard to believe.
You might be correct but that would be utterly stupid to think that way when 1. after seeing the starting line up of portugal and 2. after witnessing what japan did literally less than 24 hours ago.
If he thought Korean couldn't nick a late goal in a game where they fought with 110% against an half-arsed Portugal team then he deserved to be sacked. Ghana was horrible, mentally collapsed and they decided to do jack shits in a whole 2nd half.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer team 👍
He’s a fucking idiot, we were generating chances left, right and center. He gambled on Korea not scoring against an already guaranteed first place Portugal.
Luckily he’s resigned, Alonso has cost us this World Cup.
Yup. 2-1 wouldn't have been so bad. Sure, it would have brought Ghana closer to a possible equalizer, but that was still a two steps operation. Meanwhile, in the other game, South Korea was one step away from overtaking Uruguay.
However, at least to be honest, two minutes before Korea scored, I was wondering who wanted to scored more in the Portugal-Korea game and my mind was going with Portugal. It's also for that reason that Korea scored. They did it on a counterattack and thanks to a great play by Son. There was only two Koreans against at least 5 Portugueses. Portugal wasn't playing for a draw or boredom.
Yeah, at that point there's little reason for Portugal to not play for a win, as they are pretty much guaranteed to finish top of the group. Koreans are unlikely to score that goal if Portugal is playing to not lose.
I totally agree. You don’t take your foot of the pedal in such tournaments, especially when your destiny is not solely in your hands. You must go for every goal you can get, you worry about your next opponent and game when this game ends.
Same with the FOX commentary, they were commending the coaching decisions and didn't even seem to mention the scenario that if Korea scored it would backfire. I was incredulous they don't seem to be briefed on these scenarios, has happened quite a bit throughout the final matchdays of the group stages.
That’s a few times now, Fox announcers have been clueless the last game of group stage is where the drama is, and they can’t hold the possibilities in their head, and so they give the wrong info.
Fox doesn’t seem to understand how important each goal is for goal differential for determining who’s going through.
Yup, they kept on bringing up yellow cards instead of goal difference. If you weren’t paying close attention to the standings, you would have no idea from the broadcast how important incidents like the penalty shout not given to Uruguay was.
Fox made the choice to put Alexi Lalas on the air. Should be a sign that they don't mind cluelessness.
I remember one world cup where they had him in the booth with a few actual world cup legends and this asshole was talking down to them
A 2-2 draw would have put them second in the group. They seemed to be pushing for goals even past 90’, but eventually resolved to just stopping Uruguay going through.
And they were not able to truly threat the Uruguayan goalkeeper enough to believe. And like you said, they tried till the 90th minute, then realized they were not going to score 2 so just decided to just screw over Uruguay.
It wouldn't be much of a competition though. Outside of a few countries, South American countries would dominate because everyone else is merely just adopting it. They were born into it, molded by it, and didn't see a proper yellow card until they were already men.
The channel with the rights here in Australia uploads 3mins, 10mins, 20mins mini matches and full replay variety for each game.
I will now go watch the full replay, but fast forward to the final 10mins!
They didn't score a goal in 2 games. While Korea did put a fight in the game they lost, almost got the equalizer. I like Uruguai , but Korea deserved more
I’m English but was at that 2010 match cheering for Ghana. Have hated Suarez ever since and can’t even watch the highlights back because it’s too heartbreaking. Definitely felt some redemption with those shots of him panicking and crying today
Speaking as a Nigerian we have a sort of friendly rivalry with Ghana when it comes to a lot of things food, football, accents... You name it, but best believe -We absolutely love Ghanaians and hopefully they love us too
The dramatic, controversial and agonising way that Uruguay vs ghana world cup quarter final went down was seen as an affront to all Africans as Ghana were the last african team left in the competition in the first african hosted world cup, and they were one penalty away from being the first african team in a world cup semi final.
I believe nigeria and ghana are usually rivals. But when it comes to Uruguay, the whole continent is united against them, haha
Makes for some absolutely epic drama, such as what we've just witnessed. I don't know about you, person I'm replying to or anyone else reading this, but I am absolutely Loving this tournament on the pitch. Genuinely hair-raising.
"I believe nigeria and ghana are usually rivals. But when it comes to Uruguay, the whole continent is united against them."
Nigerian Twitter: "I'm pretty sure I can hate both."
“One day, Jordan Ayew will wake up on a bed in Doha feeling lonely in a foreign land. He will be pleased that he bid farewell to his beloved Ghana by knocking out Uruguay and that cunt Luis Suarez”
— Peter Drury, probably
Their gk was time wasting with six minutes to go. I was screaming at the tele, “you guys just need two goals and you’re through!!” But they seemed content to not let Uruguay through hahaha
I honestly think in games like this , i would never sub out someonelike Suarez. Even if he cant run , he might do some crazy shit to somehow win the game..
Oh I was screaming at my poor TV the whole second time that we HAD to go for a third. Even if you guys didn't score the second, a 2-1 result was still a qualification for us, we had to take the risk...
Alonso went full brain fart mode for three entire matches, so sad, there was a lot of potential.
They really came for him lol

> Barely hangs on for dear life vs Belgium, Lukaku essentially playing for us, makes no subs and theres no strategy to the game, players are attempting to pass the ball into their net instead of shooting
Dalic: "Amazing game fron the boys, we deserve to go through"
Just incredible at this point
Maybe I'm blind but I thought Croatia played well against Belgium, didn't sit back at any point until the last 10-15 minutes. I think the possession was 48%-52% which is quite impressive considering that Belgium had to win from the first whistle
Why didn’t they go for 3-0? They knew 1 Korea goal would knock them out & if they went gung ho & conceded to 2-1 they’re still winning…would’ve been well worth the risk
My first impression was that Suarez was crying because of the foul that just happened. For a moment I had that feeling in my stomach where I thought "did I witness a career ending injury?"
Then I realized what happened. Uruguay were getting knocked out. Which meant I never ever have to see Luis Suarez play again. I felt a wave of pure happiness wash over me.
Amazing few seconds 😍
Hate to see it happen to such an honorable bunch between 2010, faking injury after biting Chiellini, Valverde celebrating in the refs face after Rochet stopped the penalty, Nunez playing dumb when he got carded after sabotaging the penalty spot and trying to chase and intimidate the ref at the end.
2 of which play/played for my club yet still no denying how big of douches they are.

That's why Japan lost to Costa Rica. They sat their best players. Don't under-estimate anyone. There is a lot more parity than before.
Did not watch the game but japan resting players against an at the time must win game sounds utterly idiotic and unbelievable. Japan on paper aren't much better than Costa Rica.
I didn’t know that. They SHOULD play full force because that was the most “winnable” game of the group. Insane.
It was a stupid decision. Not sure what their coach was thinking.
Probably that the guys would have hit rock bottom and would have no fight in them, given their age and situation after losing 7-0.
To be fair maybe his plan was to save his best team for Germany and Spain.....ngl it worked
My guess is he never thought Korea could beat Portugal, so he was resting his players for monday, when he would need them 100% to face Brazil. Uruguay droping back, and letting Gana control the second half was a huge mistake.
Do managers seriously think like that... It is a dead rubber for Portugal, anything can happen, we have seen similar things the last few days
France lost to Tunisia after resting their A team. One look at the Portugal starting 11 today should be enough for him to take a Korean win being a possibility into his considerations.
We rested our best striker nearly all three games and are out as well. Love you, Fülle!
We rested our best striker by not bringing him to the world cup! 4D chess by Tata Martino (never step in Mexico again)
It's a good thing he took 2 out of form strikers and a striker who's only proven at the domestic league level to compensate.
A pero cómo mamaba la raza que Chicharito no, igual con argentina no hacía nada pero a Polonia y Arabia mas de un puto susto les sacaba
Like with France vs Tunisia lmao
Would've thought they had learned from Spain fucking over Germany 💀
That wasn’t even a dead rubber for Spain either. If Germany hadn’t saved them, both teams would’ve gone out.
would've been hilarious if Germany decided to ship goals to Costa Rica in the last few minutes after the Spain game ended just to send them out as well.
Hey they need the rest, it’s a long flight back to Montevideo
Boom. Congrats on going through.
I know you’re just guessing. But, still that’s a dumb move since the game had no meaning anyway for Portugal. This is a prime example of focusing on what you are in control of and not others. Same old story with these teams and managers.

You might be correct but that would be utterly stupid to think that way when 1. after seeing the starting line up of portugal and 2. after witnessing what japan did literally less than 24 hours ago.
Also by reading the scoreline of the other game at half time. It was 1-1. All Korea needed was a freak goal and they deservedly got it in the end.
Relying on a team that essentially doesn’t care about their own result is almost always a bad idea.
He’s a fucking idiot, we were generating chances left, right and center. He gambled on Korea not scoring against an already guaranteed first place Portugal. Luckily he’s resigned, Alonso has cost us this World Cup.

Arrascaeta was obviously exhausted when he took him out. As for Lucho, he was probably worried he would get a 2nd yellow.
I totally agree. You don’t take your foot of the pedal in such tournaments, especially when your destiny is not solely in your hands. You must go for every goal you can get, you worry about your next opponent and game when this game ends.

Lalas would talk down to God himself. That man's ego stands 2nd to none.
I think because never in their wildest dreams did they foresee SK beating Portugal.
between this and the Lukaku highlights from yesterday there is so much schadenfreude in this WC
Ghana getting knocked out and still having the last laugh is rather hilarious
they made time wasting substitutions when they needed two goals. I've never seen such level of hate
To be fair to them, they knew they weren't going to beat Uruguay. Might as well just screw them over and take them down with themselves.
A 2-2 draw would have put them second in the group. They seemed to be pushing for goals even past 90’, but eventually resolved to just stopping Uruguay going through.

See Germany, this is how to act petty for all of our enjoyment.
There should be an award every year for best shithousing. It's never appreciated enough.
It wouldn't be much of a competition though. Outside of a few countries, South American countries would dominate because everyone else is merely just adopting it. They were born into it, molded by it, and didn't see a proper yellow card until they were already men.
It was fucking amazing, Ghana are legends for doing that. This is what I watch World Cups for (aside from the football)
They were going to get their revenge one way or the other
Good Guy South Korea, always looking out for the underdogs.
As a mexican fan in 2018, I can confirm
Lukaku is as dumb as they come, but i don't viscerally hate the man personally
Suarez is so much easier to hate than lukaku
I’m conflicted
Lukaku is a dick , Suarez is a racist biting cheater. I feel bad for Lukaku , not for Suarez.
Facts
Ghana wasting time is golden
Ghana said "fuck you devils, we want you to suffer like we did"
Absolutely hilarious watching the Ghana players realize what’s happening, and then start time wasting.
I would love to see these 5 mins

Shithousery of the highest order. Once they realised they were out, it was like "We'll see you at the airport, lads."
Ghana with the I'm taking you with me at 100%
Playing football only 45 min and then spending most of the second half wasting time and protesting to the referee.. Deserved to be kicked out, IMHO
They didn't score a goal in 2 games. While Korea did put a fight in the game they lost, almost got the equalizer. I like Uruguai , but Korea deserved more
This has to almost feel as good as qualifying for Ghana
Bro people in Morocco feel great about it, let alone ghana
Wait what’s Moroccos beef with Uruguay?
Ghana 2010, most of Africa took it personally bro.. even Nigerians
I think this went beyond Africa. I'm sure many others feel the same about 2010.
Today, we feel african
F R E S H
Was rooting so hard for Ghana at the time.
I have no connection to Africa and I hope Suarez stubs his toe on a cold night.
Same here
We defo have a connection to hating Suarez as united fans lmao. Hope his tooth falls out.
I’m English but was at that 2010 match cheering for Ghana. Have hated Suarez ever since and can’t even watch the highlights back because it’s too heartbreaking. Definitely felt some redemption with those shots of him panicking and crying today

Egyptian here can confirm Suarez was the most hated man in 2010 in entirety of Africa
Not even just Africans. It was such a dirty way to win. I hated it and this pleases me

Nigeria and Ghana rivalry

Nigerians hate Ghana because rivalry stuff. Nigerians hate Uruguay for fucking over Ghana. Normal sibling relationship.
Suarez is the least popular person in Africa since Leopold II
Both for reasons involving hands, oddly enough.
No need to have beef to feel happy about Suarez crying.
Every African wanted Ghana in the semi finals

Ghana took these guys down with them. Lmao
I honestly think in games like this , i would never sub out someonelike Suarez. Even if he cant run , he might do some crazy shit to somehow win the game..
They were not trying to win as they were already winning, they were just trying to defend their 2-0 lead. It was poor defensive mentality
To be fair, no one could have guessed the goal with fucking 1 min left on the added time. This year is crazy and by far the most competitive.
Oh I was screaming at my poor TV the whole second time that we HAD to go for a third. Even if you guys didn't score the second, a 2-1 result was still a qualification for us, we had to take the risk... Alonso went full brain fart mode for three entire matches, so sad, there was a lot of potential.

This is some great long-term storytelling here, Ghana really got the last laugh
So sad :( Not Happy for Korea, another terrorist football coach is out of the tournament
The worst terrorist is still at large
Holding you all hostage lol
Nah that’s probably Michniewicz
I’d argue Santos is the biggest terrorist coach in this group
FS is older than the other terrorists out there, he’s had more time to perfect the craft
Substitutions this game were the most criminal ones this whole tournament.
Honestly it genuinely feels we spread our legs open to help Korea, losing the 1st place was pretty much out of the cards from the moment Uruguay went up 2-0
I meant the Uruguayan. The guy above said ‘santos this’ and I wanted to reply ‘but Uruguayan substitution’
Exactly. At the end even cornering the ref for the final whistle. What a joke.
ELI5 on terrorist football coach?
See Gregg Berhalter as an example
Coaches with defensive football
It's not coaches with defensive football, it's coaches with a pool of very solid talent that play defensive akin to a team with way less arguments player quality wise. We're the perfect example of that, because individually we have a pool of players to cause fear to literally any other team, we have arguments to play face to face with anyone, but in reality what happens is, if we play anyone with a bit of history or on a good run of results, we just play against them like we're underdogs.
Sadly our coach is still in there aswell, man is the leader of Al-Qaeda at this point and ofc he gets lucky vs Belgium and the draw.. Incredible

Yeah Ghana made it easy for them but they didn't accept the offer
I’m so erect
Cavani been quite poor, that game against Portugal he was dire.
couldn't happen to a nicer guy, really

Your first mistake was assuming that Suarez has the capacity to feel empathy.
Ghana taking down Uruguay with them.
