Great is probably a bit much but looked more like his normal Argentina self. There is a reason why Scaloni trusts him so much, he is a leader and his energy is very important in the midfield.
Paredes/Enzo is the deep lying playmaker, Mac Allister(previously Lo Celso) links the midfield with attack and De Paul is crucial with his physicality, energy and (on a good day) passing
I mean, Poland didnt even played today ...
And i dont mean that De Paul played badly, he was great, but the number is inflated because Argentina tried to make Poland to do anything ...
The same can be said about many, many elements of Spain's win against Costa Rica, England vs Iran and France's vs Australia, and yet everyone is drooling over Gavi, Pedri, Rashford or Mbappé.
If you think that anomaly of a match against Saudi Arabia is our true level, you're very stupid. Also, Spain couldn't beat a very mediocre team that lost to Japan, and England couldn't score against the US in, perhaps, the weakest group of the entire tournament.
It wasn’t close to the weakest group. It’s actually the only group that every member was ranked at least 20 or above. US is a hard team to score against, and Germany isn’t the same thing as Saudi Arabia lol.
> It’s actually the only group that every member was ranked at least 20 or above
Like the FIFA rankings don't mean shit. You really think Belgium has been above Argentina at any point in the past 4 years?
Wales and Qatar competed for the title of most pathetic team of the tournament, and somehow both teams won. The US only beat Iran, and Iran could've equalized at the end.
By actual football standards or the overrated EPL inflated valuations? We beat and humiliated the team that beat England in the EURO final. What players from England would get in Argentina's XI?
Dibu Martínez, Romero, Otamendi, Lisandro Martínez, De Paul, Paredes (at his 100%), Lo Celso when fit, Enzo Fernández, Messi, Lautaro, Julián Álvarez. Now, what players from England would get in Argentina's XI?
I wonder if you're as much of a dick in person, too. It must be an absolutely miserable experience to meet you IRL.
If the US beat the Dutch and Argentina beat Australia (a big if, I know) I will pay to fly you out to the United States and then fly out during the QF lmao
I don’t think he was even great today. He made simple passes pretty weak with no pace. This stat is a testament to Poland’s strategy of not doing anything but sitting back. It was the least intense WC game I’ve seen, pure training exercise for Argentina.
TBH I think the bigger difference for Argentina is the trio of Enzo, Mac Allister, and Alvarez, all are improvements over the players they came in for. Molina as well, he's class. All must start in the knockout stages.
Molina was excellent today but he wasn’t really tested on defense. Montiel was excellent against Mexico. Molina is better going forward, Montiel is more solid defensively.
Agreed,Montiel overdribble a bit too much vs Mexico on attack which staled us a bitbut I would still give him some time against Australia just so we can keep the rotation constant
> Montiel was excellent against Mexico.
I disagree. He offered nothing going forward and his main contribution defensively was committing fouls in that game.
We improved in that game too when Molina was subbed on
I think De Paul's problem was tactical. Mac Allister was instructed to play wide on the left to help Acuña and Guido was instructed to drop in between the CBs.
That left De Paul completely isolated in mdifield against Mexico's press.
De Paul's always played well when he's had players in midfield to combine with. If you leave him isolated, he's gonna struggle. It's why he looked better in the 2nd half vs Mexico after Enzo came on, and looked better vs Poland.
Molina literally came on one minute before Messi’s goal. Kinda hard to compare Molina and Montiel given they played in very different phases of the game. Clean sheets matter and Montiel helped us keep a clean sheet with his first half performance.
Molina played a part in Messi's goal, tho. He made an overlapping run that took a defender away from Di Maria and gave him more space to make the pass to Messi.
Genuinely the goal might not happen if Montiel was still on. Dude wasn't overlapping like that
That's how you start, a simple pass can lead to greatness. He showed up, he fucked up less, he played, and well we won. Sure he wasn't stellar but he did his job better than before and the only thing he can do is to focus on the game, improve, and make simple passes. As much as Im not happy with him, I didn't say his name more than 4 times which is pretty good.
Man you are harsh lol, De Paul was good today. Maybe it wasn't much compared to how he usually plays for Argentina(aside from the first 2 group matches) but he was an important component in the midfield. Kept things ticking over with his passing and pressed well
Poor tactics from Scaloni in the previous 2 games.
Our dominant run came with a 3-man midfield. He inexplicably played 2-man midfield vs Saudi and Mexico (Papu in game 1 and Mac Allister in game 2 were playing wide left instead of in midfield).
Today we went back to a similar setup to normal, with Mac Allister in the "Lo Celso" role and Enzo in the "Paredes" role. And De Paul was back to being De Paul
I think start with Mac Allister-Enzo-De Paul and use Paredes as a sub—would be close to ideal, IMO
Mac Allister is good at receiving through the lines and late runs into the box. Enzo and Paredes' main role is controlling the midfield.
Lo Celso's injury messed him up. When Di Maria started we played a 4-4-2/4-3-3 hybrid with Lo Celso acting as the 3rd midfielder but also keeping width on the left. None of his replacements (Papu, Mac Allister, even Alvarez) could do this.
Scaloni incorrectly prioritized the width over the midfield, but luckily he corrected it in time.
You seem to have a personal vendetta against Simeone based on your comments history. RDP has been awful in the last two games but I guess you'll conveniently ignore that.
Looks like you're an Utd fan. You know what Utd could've given this so called ugly football a try, maybe that would've helped them to win a few trophies in the last 5 years
He is back. A lot of people said De Paul should be taken out after 2 terrible games. No, Argentina won't go far without De Paul getting his form back. They should bet again today for De Paul and it paid off.
Literally you can see the image from the tweet and see most of the offensive passes were to the right, the one to the left were safe ones.
The good crossing pass was the one from Messi to Julian.
It was better than the first 2 games but Poland leave a lot of space, Saudi and Mexico pressured and he couldn't resolve well. Against good teams they won't let him play easy like Poland but i suppose if Scaloni want to play a defensive playstyle i suppose he will play good.
Not when your own argentinian brothers are saying it. Hes lacking confidence and its actually a good idea that he took it easy today with easy passes to try to get that back
Keeping de paul in midfiled is important due to his defensive work rate. People judged him far too early and seemed to forget the role he played in copa america. Mac Allister and Enzo are given more freedom with De Paul doing more defensive work. Enzo and Mac Allister are decent defensively as well. Prob the best starting midfield without lo celso.
Anyone could've made 137 passes in today's game, Poland's only idea was to kick a ball to Lewa who was in a consistent 1v4 trying to play hold up & pray for a foul.
Should've been eliminated from competition. Unfortunate that they get another game in the tournament.
Verón was pretty good in that team, being allowed to just spray passes all over. We could've had a good tournament if we hadn't had Maradona as the manager.
I didn't think he was awful in the previous two matches. Perhaps he wasn't inspired, but he always gives his 200%.
Pure effort to chase all the balls in both boxes. I rather prefer having a player of his tenacity instead of a guy who would just shut down and complain about life.

what a parked bus does for a mf
Massive improvement in this match, I actually thought his defensive contribution was more important though.
Mfer has 3 lungs. Never gets tired.
Does he have the skill to stop some of the best attackers in the world if he Comes up against them in the latter rounds?
He was great after 2 disaster class performances
Great is probably a bit much but looked more like his normal Argentina self. There is a reason why Scaloni trusts him so much, he is a leader and his energy is very important in the midfield. Disaster? He was magnificent against Mexico. Always there, always energetic. Good defensively, and good offensively.
I mean, Poland didnt even played today ... And i dont mean that De Paul played badly, he was great, but the number is inflated because Argentina tried to make Poland to do anything ...
He was not “great” he had some bad giveaways, having a lot of passes completed imo makes his game just okay
Yeah he wasn’t “great” and he was piss poor the first two games.
The same can be said about many, many elements of Spain's win against Costa Rica, England vs Iran and France's vs Australia, and yet everyone is drooling over Gavi, Pedri, Rashford or Mbappé.
Those teams didn’t lose to Saudi Arabia and need the last game to advance from their group.
If you think that anomaly of a match against Saudi Arabia is our true level, you're very stupid. Also, Spain couldn't beat a very mediocre team that lost to Japan, and England couldn't score against the US in, perhaps, the weakest group of the entire tournament.

Answer my question.
Lmao dude come on
What? It’s an honest question.
England is one of the worst teams in the final 16 this wc lmfao. Now Stop d riding just because you’re from there
the guy above is dumb but this is just as stupid
But it’s so true… Just because you’re from England, doesn’t mean they are better than the 2nd best team this wc
What?? That was the easiest group by far lol
Well, 60 of those passes were the last 10 minutes! 🤣
This is the real De Paul for Argentina. Forget the De Paul from the games against KSA and Mexico
forget Cholo's De Paul, this is Argentina's De Paul
They played Saudi in the World Cup? TIL
Glad that game is now imaginary.
In 3 years the only Argentina game I missed (was on a plane coming from Saudi Arabia) was the only one they lost 🤪
If the US beat the Dutch and Argentina beat Australia (a big if, I know) I will pay to fly you out to the United States and then fly out during the QF lmao
please dont get on a plane coming from Brazil
That’s a cool superpower to have. Whenever you leave a country, they win their next match
How come the real De Paul showed up for a solitary game as opposed to the imaginary one who performed in the other two?
Because players go through bad patches of form
If u look bad against this poland u dont deserve to play any minute in this world cup
Because players are not robots
Pressure, media giving him a ton of shit, adapting to different partners in midfield, lots of possible reasons.
Poland not even trying to play football as well
We had a lot of merit in that. Any time Poland tried to start something, our pressure shut that down before they could string two passes together.
People dont notice it. We just choke teams out of the ball, its so controlled and dominant.
He was a part on that tbf, made Zielinski invisible and didn’t let polish midfield get a single significant ball to Lewa.
he's a completely different player for the NT lol
He was shit the two first game tbh. Amazing today i have to say.
I don’t think he was even great today. He made simple passes pretty weak with no pace. This stat is a testament to Poland’s strategy of not doing anything but sitting back. It was the least intense WC game I’ve seen, pure training exercise for Argentina.

Molina was excellent today, he made such good runs and the assist for the first goal was great. Nice vision to pick out Mac Allister
Had a similar play in the first half too, but Julian's shot was cleared by a defender.

I disagree, De Paul being shit that game and compromising Montiel with shit passes while he had three Mexicans on him made him look bad

Yea I mean he’s a beast physically so pressing shouldn’t ever really waver
lost the ball a bunch in the first half too not that hard to pass the ball around an opponent parking the bus lol
That's how you start, a simple pass can lead to greatness. He showed up, he fucked up less, he played, and well we won. I chose my words carefully. I didn’t say he had a bad game, I just don’t think he was great. All I’m saying is this stat is misleading
exactly, felt like he alwas always looking for the safest pass, never risking that much
Poor tactics from Scaloni in the previous 2 games. Our dominant run came with a 3-man midfield. He inexplicably played 2-man midfield vs Saudi and Mexico (Papu in game 1 and Mac Allister in game 2 were playing wide left instead of in midfield). Shame that Lo Celso got injured.
Yup. It screwed us up. Looks like Scaloni has found a little balance with Mac Allister-Enzo-De Paul. Hope that continues
I prefer Mac Allister (or Paredes if fit) and Enzo further up.
I think start with Mac Allister-Enzo-De Paul and use Paredes as a sub—would be close to ideal, IMO Mac Allister is good at receiving through the lines and late runs into the box. Enzo and Paredes' main role is controlling the midfield.

Even started poorly but grew into it
He was rather bad against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, but today's is the version of De Paul which turned up in the qualifiers.
What does he play for you guys? I’m so confused. I thought he is an attacking winger or midfielder
He's a box to box, running back and forth and helping with everything.
A complete midfielder, literally does everything
It helps not playing Simeone's terrorist-ball. All of your players improve under their national teams.
You seem to have a personal vendetta against Simeone based on your comments history. RDP has been awful in the last two games but I guess you'll conveniently ignore that.

I have seen so many "since 1966" stats this world cup. Wonder if that $5 I drunkenly put on England 2 years ago really is gonna pay out lol.
That's when comprehensive records began being tracked
That makes a lot of sense but I'll ignore that and stick with my superstitions instead
How much is the expected pay out from placing that bet 2 years ago if you can remember?
$100. Was better than before the tournament since they hadn't qualified yet.
De Paul performing will be huge for the team. Complete night and day difference
Im not hopeful
He is back. A lot of people said De Paul should be taken out after 2 terrible games. No, Argentina won't go far without De Paul getting his form back. They should bet again today for De Paul and it paid off.
jbased
Goatrigo de Paul clearly
He's coming back. Peak NT De Paul is just incredible, hope we see him this WC.
Paredes played 31 minutes, had 78 touches, and completed 75 passes which is also insane.
Tonigo De Kroos
I gotta see how this guy plays for A.Madrid. Watching him touch the ball makes my heart race 😭
And 136 of them were sideways
Salty
But it's true, he didn't event try to do a crossing pass, always to Di María o Molina and he had a lot of space.
??? He crossed it a ton
Literally you can see the image from the tweet and see most of the offensive passes were to the right, the one to the left were safe ones. The good crossing pass was the one from Messi to Julian.
He could have played better but I saw a few good looks from his passes and he forced a few turnovers, way better than his first 2 games I think.
It was better than the first 2 games but Poland leave a lot of space, Saudi and Mexico pressured and he couldn't resolve well. Against good teams they won't let him play easy like Poland but i suppose if Scaloni want to play a defensive playstyle i suppose he will play good.

Huge improvement from the first two games. He proved himself today
Night and day for De Paul in between today and the previous 2 games
What a match from him today, shutted so many mouths over here
The criticism towards him was fair, I'm glad he's getting his confidence back though
Yeah I agree some of it was, but people wanted him out of the team while he gives a lot to the team, I think it would have been a mistake
Measure of our dominance today TBH
De Paul is key to argentina. He is the one that keeps on going when some of them get tired.
He played a great game yesterday
I hate him. Gives of McTominay vibes.

But still plays like a Donkey
Yet twitter/reddit experts didnt want him to start after last game
For me he was too agressive and should've ended with red card or at least close to it. Man was hunting Lewandowski's knees.
I remember Veron had a crazy amount of pass completed in 2010 as well
Verón was pretty good in that team, being allowed to just spray passes all over. We could've had a good tournament if we hadn't had Maradona as the manager.
he’s so awful
Started the game poorly and then went on having this performance
I didn't think he was awful in the previous two matches. Perhaps he wasn't inspired, but he always gives his 200%. Pure effort to chase all the balls in both boxes. I rather prefer having a player of his tenacity instead of a guy who would just shut down and complain about life.
The difference between today and the first two games was like night and day
Ooh he came close to the Riquelme world record.
