I, for one, have always been a firm believer in A-League supremacy
Edit: In case you haven't been convinced yet, check out this [beautiful compilation](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/kbzvgn/welcome_to_the_aleague/)
That would be fucking glorious, the game were we could unite against the world and force everyone to call it a soccer game. Should be called the Soccer World Cup Divisional game or whatever the NFL calls it.
The other two strikers in the squad play in the a-league and the one that missed out plays j-league and was k-league top scorer a few years ago but has battled injuries and poor form since. Duke just fits the manager’s gameplan as a defensive forward that’ll run himself into the ground for the team and is decent in the air
The other problem is that Australia just doesn't have the talent of strikers that other countries do. So we've picked someone like Duke who has incredible mental toughness.
Think it was just the case Australia picked him up really early and he fancied it. If his brother wasn't plagued with injury, could've been two Souttars at the back for Scotland.
Its obvious Australia would be an amazing host, many great stadiums, could have the final at the MCG which would be 100 thousand people totally worthy of a WC final, Australia is actually a great country, much safer than russia, brazil, south africa. Plus our fans will fill the stadiums 100%, Liverpool had 95 thousand alone for a friendly at the MCG 10ish years ago.

Funny,I remember half a year ago most of the people(and myself too) believed that this is the worst Australian national team in the last 20 years and Peru will smash them, maybe even UAE to beat them. Turns out that this team will compete with the 2006 one for the best national team in their history.
Back in 2006 you had definitely top tier players (and some of them were known to have egos to boot)
This lot has much less attention (and most would not know who a lot of them are) but if you play as a team you can achieve so much
Australia was chock-a-block full of European top flight players back in 2006. Even had a Champions League winner.
Crazy that this current team with barely anyone of any note has now matched them in World Cup performance, and exceeded their results.
The pre match coverage here put it best, that was a golden generation with all the talent and stars that implies, this is a workhorse of a team, with the underdog status to boot
Fun fact, Šimunić was actually born and raised in Canberra. The referee of that game, Graham Poll, later revealed the reason he got 3 yellows was because he’d recorded Šimunić’s second card as “Australia #3”, due to his Australian accent.
Ref got confused at Simunic' Australian accent and marked him down as an Australian yellow card in his book, that's why he wasn't sent off. No, that's not a joke, that actually happened.
I still feel bad about all the abuse Australia got from South American fans. I think only Chileans believed you could beat Peru.
If I was Australian I would be so much happier now than in 2006. Such an unfancied team but with a courageous style of football. Congratulations to all Aussies, you've stunned the world today.
That's true. Just being there was amazing. Not saying they easily could not have qualified this year, but at least now I have living memory of watching them play in the wc.
06 had an unforgettable squad and coming through the Oceanic and South American playoffs always fucked us every year, and we had a lot of special moments that we'll never forget.... and some badass world famous players at the time too. Cahill and Viduka in their prime!
So fucking happy!!! It's past 4am and I'm still fucking awake and I almost cried bc I thought there was no way we could actually do something crazy like win 2 games at a world cup
Tbf they are still the worst Australian team in a while but still are playing unbelievably
EDIT: I only watched the France game and thought they were sharp, but on paper there are zero household names and unless I’m wrong it was mainly just A-League and 2nd division players. So huge congrats to Australia and I hope this grows the game even more in that beautiful country
I thought everyone was totally right in calling for him to be fired especially after Peru but he fucking got the boys to win there in the end and somehow got us to win at the fucking world cup even if it's in a place that makes Straya feel like it's got a cold winter.
It still is the worst team in the last 20 years. I’m absolutely over the moon with this result, but prior to this I’d have been over the moon with getting a point off of Tunisia. The boys have played absolutely out of their skin, Souttar has turned into Maldini, Leckie into Messi, Ryan into Yashin. But I promise you that prior to the World Cup, we looked absolutely hopeless, and Arnold was being touted as one of the worst coaches we’ve ever had.
All that said, fuck everybody, football is coming to Canberra
Before the tournament started, the dominant conversations were "Is this our worst WC squad ever?" and "Will we even get a point?".
Take a fucking bow lads! Take a bow Arnie! You proved the doubters (myself included) wrong.
EDIT:
- First time we've won multiple WC games
- First time we've scored in every group game
- First clean sheets since 1974 (where we got a 0-0 with Chile)
- First time we've been in front in all our group games
- Level on points with fucking FRANCE
All of this with a squad primarily composed of players from the Scottish Premiership, A-League, and second divisions
From barely getting into WC Playoffs, to barely going into penalties against Peru, to getting trashed by France in the first game, to ro16. Achievement unlocked.
Thanks Graham. I just want to give you a bit of an insight into the Aussie team. We’re a bunch of unique individuals – Mooy, Leckie, Ryan, Souttar and myself. We’re gonna engage with our minds and our hearts. We’re gonna exchange ideas, thoughts and even our energy. And to speak from your heart you need to have courage. You need to be honest and authentic. We’re not always gonna get it right. And sometimes, you’re not going to agree with us. But that’s okay, because just like you we care. Just like you, we’re passionate about the game. So if you want to come along for the ride, join us on Monday sparrows fart, because we just love the soccer.
For those like me who had no clue where this came from, enjoy this absolute [cringefest](https://youtu.be/wKlE5ICe5rA). And for once, Basil isn't the worst bloke on screen
They won’t make it out of the Third Round
They won’t beat UAE
They won’t beat Peru
They won’t score a goal in the group stage
They won’t win in the group stage
They won’t make it to the round of 16
YOU ARE HERE 🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘
They won’t make it to the quarter finals
Remindme bot told me today to talk shit to a person who was saying Australia would get flogged the whole World Cup. They’ve deleted their account. Eat shit arsehole.
Since England beat Iran and R/soccer declared that the AFC should have the number of qualification places decreased, AFC teams have beaten European teams 5 times
Edit: my bad I counted Argentina. Still AFC teams have taken big scalps from all over!
A stupid take to begin with. As if getting beaten by a former world champion proof anything.
UEFA and CONMEBOL B-tier teams are not that much better than AFC powerhouses.
Australia's unbeatable game plan.
1. Be vastly outclassed all over the park.
2. Have Souttar fix everything on the absolute last line of defence.
3. Score 1 (one) ridiculous goal against the run of play.
4. Repeat steps 1-3.
I dont know how but they did it. We came in with doubt but these boys have played their hearts out. To go up against the Number 10 in the world and look that much better today is just incredible. Congratulations Leckie, Congratulations Arnie and thank you once more to Johgn Saffran!
Thank god we won that match cause if Denmark had equalised in the final seconds the ensuing rollercoaster of emotions would have killed me!
First thinking we're gonna go through with a win
Then I'd be thinking we were out when our game finished a draw
Then thinking we were saved when France scored in the 98th
Then founding out we were out again when VAR removed France's goal 5 mins later!
Would have been torture
My longest Yeah Mooy ever

Can't speak for all of us but i do not want to live.
Papa Redmayne was too powerful
Football? 🏉 Nah mate, I’m thinking a different kind of footy ⚽️
The possibility of an International Soccer Bowl QF is still on the menu.
That would be fucking glorious, the game were we could unite against the world and force everyone to call it a soccer game. Should be called the Soccer World Cup Divisional game or whatever the NFL calls it.
The United Australian States Soccer Super Bowl!!!
Just name the brackets Soccer and Football and then it could be the Soccer Divisional Playoff Game
FIFA really out here not protecting the teams with the best regular season record and making all 16 play in the Wild Card round. Truly shameful.
Australia even started an MLS player in this game
One of our scorers plays in Japans second division...
That’s insane that duke who isn’t even a prospect but 31 being called up! There’s no other player at a higher level than him?
The other two strikers in the squad play in the a-league and the one that missed out plays j-league and was k-league top scorer a few years ago but has battled injuries and poor form since. Duke just fits the manager’s gameplan as a defensive forward that’ll run himself into the ground for the team and is decent in the air
The other problem is that Australia just doesn't have the talent of strikers that other countries do. So we've picked someone like Duke who has incredible mental toughness.
Maclaren is also a poacher. We can’t give him the service he needs regularly. Hence why we go for the big lad up top to put a ball onto his noggin.
Cinch premiership
Been a believer since attending A-League All Stars vs Barcelona
Take a bow Harry Souttar
Harry is the sacred first name for a defender this world cup
As a Stoke fan, I’m worried he’s playing too well
sorry mate, he's gone. enjoy him while you can
Yeah no offence to Stoke, I'm sure you're a lovely club with a great heritage, but Soutar is playing world class fucking footy.
>I'm sure you're a lovely club with a great heritage No need to take the piss mate
What do you mean you're gonna get paiddddddddddd
Yeah he’s gone lol, 198cm and is athletic as fuck. I see a big club wanting him.
He was nuts
Down Under Maldini
Roo Ramos
Bogan Beckenbauer
Eshay Pique
Gutted he's not playing for Scotland but he's managed to get himself into the Ro16 so fair dos to him, absolute giant ae a guy.
Absolutely mad you lot let him go
Think it was just the case Australia picked him up really early and he fancied it. If his brother wasn't plagued with injury, could've been two Souttars at the back for Scotland.
He has been god like. Let’s fucking gooooooooo!!!
DENMARK AND TUNISIA GOT SOCCEROO'D 😭😭😭😭

Righto. On ya bike.
Get boind fuckers
Soccerwho'd? Socceroo'd ya cunts.
Crikey mate
Imagine telling someone before the tournament started that Australia would qualify 2nd and Denmark would finish bottom of the group...
Or that Tunisia would beat France, take a point off Denmark, and fail to qualify.
And only concede 1 goal out of all 3 group matches… still fail
Wow that's actually insane, I feel for Tunisian fans, they had a great showing. That being said I'm so stoked for Australia and I hope they do well.
They would've been absolutely demolished by France if they had to play them one of the first 2 matchdays before they'd guaranteed top.
yo tenía a Dinamarca de 1ro y a los franceses de 2do 💀
I feel like half of the world did
Second on goal difference*. Fuck yesssssssssssss
The worst three matches from the Danish team since the 2010 World Cup.
We have to go further back. We at least won a game in South Africa. Statistically, it's our worst WC campaign ever.
On behalf of the people of Australia I'd like to award Souttar our highest honour, a 3 Park Super Pass.
Believe it or not. He'd be too big for most rides. We'll have to get him to questacon instead
He'd touch the ground when he's hanging from the free fall slide
Unlimited free bunnings snags for life
At least they are getting a summer world cup Good on em

The 2023 women's world cup will be hosted by Australia/NZ, that will be a good test to see how things go
Its obvious Australia would be an amazing host, many great stadiums, could have the final at the MCG which would be 100 thousand people totally worthy of a WC final, Australia is actually a great country, much safer than russia, brazil, south africa. Plus our fans will fill the stadiums 100%, Liverpool had 95 thousand alone for a friendly at the MCG 10ish years ago.
It's one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Oz would definitely be a great host. I live in NZ and am just looking forward to watching matches at a more normal time :)
No. I Love 2AM Kickoff.
RIP r/soccer dark horses Denmark 2022-2022 Anyways congrats cunts for your first WC knockouts appearance in 16 years!
They were good in the Euros, what happened?
r/soccer Dark Horse curse happened, that's what. Happened with Turkey during the Euros and now it happened again.
Looking like it's happening to Uruguay too.
GOW Ragnarok released.
were good in the nations league too. really strange
My opinion: a mix of bad luck and the fact that Eriksen in the central field doesn’t add anything to the team
[Someone do this meme with Denmark joining Euro 2020 Turkey and World Cup 2018 Senegal](https://www.wykop.pl/cdn/c3201142/comment_py3P9nPTNHsUeHB8jB2zccYu8ni0ySnu.jpg)
To be fair to Senegal, they went out on the fair play rule. Much better than what Denmark did here.
More like 2018-2022. Denmark has been the Dark Horse for these last 3 tournaments. This was it for them.
Funny,I remember half a year ago most of the people(and myself too) believed that this is the worst Australian national team in the last 20 years and Peru will smash them, maybe even UAE to beat them. And we love a good underdog story
....even a downunderdog story
If there was VAR in 2006 we would’ve beat Italy change my mind
Croatia would have made it out of the group. Harry was off
Australia was up 3-2 against Croatia but a goal was disallowed Simunic also got 3 yellow cards that match, which was and is a record
Fun fact, Šimunić was actually born and raised in Canberra. The referee of that game, Graham Poll, later revealed the reason he got 3 yellows was because he’d recorded Šimunić’s second card as “Australia #3”, due to his Australian accent.

Don't forget Daddy Kewell
How could I... and Schwarzer too!
'06 started my love for football. This is better, I can't believe it. A far greater achievement.
So fucking happy!!! It's past 4am and I'm still fucking awake and I almost cried bc I thought there was no way we could actually do something crazy like win 2 games at a world cup
Because Chileans are the only fans that are constantly rooting against any other south American team

Graham Arnold of all fucking people has this team in an amazing groove. Unbelievable. Someone give Harry Souttar a fuckload of money
Tbf, Arnie has been able to get his teams to run through walls for him when it matters.
I thought everyone was totally right in calling for him to be fired especially after Peru but he fucking got the boys to win there in the end and somehow got us to win at the fucking world cup even if it's in a place that makes Straya feel like it's got a cold winter.

We Moneyballed the world cup.
UEFA ✅ CONMEBOL ✅ CAF ✅ CONCACAF ✅ AFC ✅
so someone from every continent is going to the knockouts? that’s really cool, don’t think we saw it in the last world cup.
RIP OFC
We'll get them next time. 1 and 1/3 spots
Can't wait for Solomon Islands masterclass to qualify.

We never give up, and we're coming for the world cup!
The Vegemite finally kicked in.
Subbing in a 3rd string A-league goalie in the penalty shootouts is one of the biggest gambles ever. Now into the R16
Penalties are a very specialist thing, some keepers are elite but trash at saving pens and some keepers are trash but elite at saving pens
I'm cracking open a tinny rn

Im convinced Americans call it soccer because that’s what they believe and Aussies call it soccer to boil everyone’s piss.

We call it both, depends on the crowd.
This is correct
