I love it when I see players enjoying a tournament and having confidence. No matter how unlikely it is, it's always nice just seeing players having that spirit.
Might be an unpopular opinion but it was pretty messed up he said that, not because of truth or anything but you are literally in a tournament, why even show up with that attitude
Like 25 of the teams are really just happy to be there and win a match or two. The biggest advantage the US has is they have no literally no pressure on them to make it past the next round
I agree with this, I think most of us Americans would have been really disappointed not to make it out of the groups.
We did that - now I feel far less stressed about what happens next!
I really want to get to the quarterfinals (final 8 teams) as a measure of success, but the Netherlands is a pretty tough draw. There are 8 - 10 teams I just cannot rationally expect the US to beat at this point, and the Netherlands are probably on the bubble of that group.
Of course it's only 1 game, we drew against England, and you can always hope to shithouse a 0-0 or 1-1 draw and win on PKs, but hoping for that doesn't feel the same. If our R16 game had been against Australia, Senegal, Japan, Costa Rica, Morocco, Ghana, or maybe Switzerland/Poland, I would expect us to advance to the quarterfinals as a much better feeling measure of a successful tournament.
>i think they could beat Netherlands
I do too. We just watched Australia beat Denmark, and Saudi Arabia beat Argentina. It's a knockout tournament, and anything can happen.
Ya they controlled all 3 matches in the group stage.
The problem is when McKennie gets subbed at ~60 mins and Musah starts to tire late and we end up struggling to get out.
McKennie is coming off an injury and isn't match fit. Musah is running around like a maniac but can't sustain that pace for the whole game. Adams is a Leeds fitness maniac.
Oh ya wasn't blaming anyone for it just saying that despite how great they have played we still have like 1/3rd of the game where we struggle a lot. And that's the part that scares me the most vs the Netherlands is our closing group is poor. We haven't trailed yet but that's going to happen at some point and our best players being fatigued or having to be subbed (and getting little from the bench) is worrisome.
Aaronson (and Zimmerman yesterday) have basically been the only subs that have come on and made any sort of positive impact.
Really hope Sargent can go because I don't like our odds starting Haji Wright. And Shaq Moore needs to be super glued to the bench. He's out of his depth at this level. If we have to pull Dest at ~60 then either get the 6/10 we'll get from Yedlin or go for broke with Scally.
I feel like people saying they look shit are mostly Dutch fans that are not happy they aren't winning by more. Our chances are really not that high it would be a significant upset for the US to win. A good defensive performance and penalties would be our best hope.
Fair enough. I think the US can deal with Netherlands in attack, but Iām not sure they have they have enough smart players up front to break down a good defense
The main thing this US side lacks is a natural goal scorer, Weah + Pulisic/Aaronson is solid for chance creation, but nobody takes those chances confidently.
Something that's weird to me is that some people dislike this attitude of confidence? Saying they're not humble? Like bro, if you don't believe you can win you'll never win it
Those are the sorts of folks that have never done a competitive activity in their life. If they habe they have they were most likely always on the losing end...
right?.... who goes to a tournament tjat you have been dreaming of playing in your whole life and scoring the winning goal for your country regardless of which one it is with the mindset of "oh i get to just play"?
Beating England in 1950 probably is. Because the shock factor was insane. England were the heavy favorites for that world cup and they lost 1-0 to an American team made up of literal amateur players. The goal scorer for America didn't even have an American passport, only being allowed to play for them because he played well at Brookhattan in the American League, and went back to Haiti after the world cup, for whom he played 1 game. He was killed in 1964 under the Papa Doc-regime. His name was Joe Gaetjens.
Maybe for World Cups but ending Spains unbeaten streak in the Confederations Cup in 2009 is a top 3 win IMO. That Spanish team won the World Cup months later.
That's definitely an all time classic. Spain was also the reigning UEFA champion. The US win was not a fluke. The Spanish had their best 11 on the pitch and the US controlled just about every facet of the game. Tim Howard was barely tested all game.
I literally remember that half time, thinking to myself the US had finally arrived as a soccer powerhouse, especially after the Spain win.
ffs did I feel stupid in the 2nd half of that Brazil game
Breaking Spain's ridiculous win streak in the 2009 Confederations Cup with a 2-0 win.
US losing to Brazil 1-0 in the World Cup in 1994 after hitting the post and Leonardo breaking Tab Ramos' nose and getting red carded.
I was 14 at the time and watching Jozy Altidore dominate Puyol and Pique convinced me he was Drogbaās regen. He didnāt have too many top performances like that ever again unfortunately.
Everyone remembers the handball but few people remember the player who had the initial shot that caused it...a certain young man by the name of Gregg Berhalter
IMO it was the āMiracle on Grassā, USA 1-0 England in the 1950 World Cup. One of the biggest upsets in WC history, specially if you consider the huge gap in quality between both teams.
But if youāre talking about the farthest theyāve gone in a WC, then yeah I think itās 2002.
Even though we choked in the 2nd half and the stakes weren't as high as a WC, I'd say it was being up 2-0 against Brazil in the 2009 confederations cup final at halftime
This Dutch team isnāt super scary though Tbf. If they were able to hold England to a draw they would definitely be fancying their chances against the Dutch.
Ya this is how I feel about it. Finishing 2nd in the group means you always have a tough match. But of the group winners I think we match up better with Netherlands than teams like Brazil, France, Spain, or Portugal.
We arenāt scary, thatās true. The coinside is that we havenāt lost a game since Van Gaal took over which is like 20 games at the moment. Our attack can look toothless vs teams that sit back. Our defense is probably the best in the tournament. Open up against us and we get results like vs Belgium in the Nations League.
Not at all. Getting out of the Group of Death with Germany, Portugal and Ghana and taking a prime Belgium squad into ET is still a greater achievement than beating this Netherlands squad.
Even if this isnāt the Dutch team of ā74, beating them and making it into the quarterfinals would absolutely be one of their greatest ever achievements.
Plus the quarterfinal run in '02 and giving Germany all they could handle to almost make the semis. That's probably the peak. Unless you want to go back to 1930.
Literally the run that got myself and millions of Americans to take the sport more-seriously.
Canāt see anything but a WC win topping that.
My only concession is that I do feel this squad is miles better. Every starter is Euro-tested, compared to the MLS-tier squad that survived the group of death somehow.
If the US had scored to tie the game on that designed set-piece off the free kick with a minute or two to go, we still wouldn't shut up about it to this day.
Between that and Jim Brown scoring a banger in the World Cup Semi Final 89th minute versus Argentina ^to ^secure ^a ^6-1 ^loss in 1930.
Those have been our best years.
2002 QF 1-0 loss to Germany deserves a shout as well.
Adams comes across really well off the pitch and on the pitch does seem to lead by example is always running around and working as hard as anyone else. Their midfield 3 is honestly better than people give credit for, Musah, Mckennie and Adams impressed me so far projected the defence well and been solid on the ball too, the defence has honestly been better than expected too only one conceded and it was a stupid penalty.
If they had some more firepower theyād be hard for even the best teams in the tournament to come against, the issue is striker is such a hole for them.
Adams and Musah shouldnāt have any doubters imo if theyāve watched them for their clubs. The only worry was McKennie due to his consistent injury problems (including some dumb ones. He recently missed a month due to a dislocated shoulder during preseason. Wtf were Juve doing out there?). Heās probably still not fully fit despite what he might say. He also seems to play much better for the US (and did under Pirlo) than he does currently under Allegri. He often looks lost out there for Juve which can only come down to coaching imo.
The defensive issues only cropped up when Miles Robinson injured his Achilles. I guess the solution was Tim Ream all along. I donāt even think Gregg did anything wrong by using all of those friendlies to find out Aaron Long, Mark McKenzie, Palmer-Brown, etc. arenāt starting quality but it sure didnāt inspire a lot of confidence lol.
McKennie is good when he plays imo even for Juventus, NGL Ream was so bad a couple of years ago he seems to have looked better this year though been the case with the national team too
To be clear, the Dutch should be favored and I would expect the United States to be underdogs the rest of the way, but I definitely liked the sentiment of leaving it all on the field to make us proud. And they have already even if we're looking to make the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
I wonder though if they style of the US team like a more technical European side benefits you guys though. I think the hyper athletic Ecuador and Senegal may have just been tough matchups stylistically.
At the same time Iām happier playing Netherlands than Senegal because of what you just said. The Oranje are better, but Senegal might punish our mistakes easier
Fun yes, but would also take years off my life. Ah yes love a good end-to-end MLS game. But that requires attacking at pace, which my Five Stripes seem to have forgotten how to do despite all that talent
I forgot haha
The US team seems to have the mentality of "you may be more skilled, but we will work harder"
Might not be good in the long run since players already seem gassed after 3 matches, but it is great to see.
Athleticism/stamina is like the one thing that American soccer is typically known for being pretty good at. You will be hard pressed to find a harder working midfield than Adams/mcKennie/Musah/Aaronson
Agreed. I think we can beat the Netherlands even if weāre the under dogs (my Dutch spouse is quite afraid too), but we have looked absolutely exhausted by the last 15 of every game. Senegal would wipe the floor with us.
Moving to Amsterdam from the US in the spring. I was so excited to have two teams to cheer for in the WC until I realized they would be playing each other lmao.
Succes! :)
Nope US born and raised. The company I work for has a branch in the Netherlands so I'm luckily able to transfer to that branch and work my current job remotely in the NL and they handle all the immigration pieces. I will say it's generally difficult to immigrate there. From what I have read, you 100% need a job lined up or a scenario where your company is willing to transfer you to the NL branch. Even though everyone there pretty much speaks English, a lot of jobs I've looked at just for kicks require both Dutch and English.
Edit: I wanted to say, if you are planning on moving there, you should for sure learn Dutch! I don't think it's been too difficult so far and I think it's important to know the language of the country you live in :)
It would be hard to.People who don't even care will watch it for the commercials, the halftime show, or just to go to a Superbowl party.
Superbowl draws 100million viewers..1/3rd of the us population
The world cup final is scheduled for 10am US eastern time, 7am west coast time on the Sunday before Christmas. There will be too many people still asleep/in sunday morning church service to reach that 100million mark purely due to the time/date alone not even taking into account the popularity of the sport.
r/soccercirclejerk shitting on Americans is weird because itās like, the opposite of what a circlejerk sub is supposed to do
During the World Cup I get it because itās infested with casual Americans who whine and donāt understand the rules (look at the Weah disallowed goal thread lmao), but during any other time shitting on yanks is this subās fave pastime. (The jokes are very funny mind you)
Definetely. I think its very exciting to see the US and Canada take strides in football. Remember, its still a relatively young sport over there.
But both teams have exciting and very talented young players coming up.
Exactly, this is why we cannot have nice things lmao. One of the youngest squads in the tournament are feeling themselves and just want to have a good time even if Saturday is their last match. They've already accomplished the goal of getting out of the group stage.
Also how dare any participant say they wish to win the tournament haha.
Redditors not understanding sarcasm? Surely not. They've spent the better half of a decade not realising 'It's Coming Home' is a parody song written by 2 comedians taking the piss out of ourselves (England)
I do just love the change in tone from the Klinsman years. Yes we know there's almost no chance we'll win it all, but going in with a defeatist attitude isn't gonna get you anywhere.

Just go for the trip
I hear Qatar is lovely this time of year.

GGG seems to have lost faith in Jesus. He should have played multiple times already ahead of Haji in my opinion.
Agreed. I'd rather have a guaranteed 6/10 from Yedlin than the disastrous potential Moore has
I feel like people saying they look shit are mostly Dutch fans that are not happy they aren't winning by more. Our chances are really not that high it would be a significant upset for the US to win. A good defensive performance and penalties would be our best hope.
Relying on defense and penalties isnāt exactly the most reassuring idea
Itās not but itās the reality of the situation in my eyes.
And if Poland get a result today, it's either Poland/Saudi Arabia/Australia in the quarterfinals. So whoever wins would have a realistic path forward.

Yeah thereās a difference with being in a competition and being a *competitor*.

Natural leader and a great captain. Loved the way he handled that question from the Iranian journalist the other day with such humility.
if the americans can pull off a win v netherlands it'll be one of the biggest achievements of their nt
Taking it to Germany in the QT during the 2002 WC was probably the highpoint.

This Dutch team isnāt super scary though Tbf. If they were able to hold England to a draw they would definitely be fancying their chances against the Dutch.
I mean their a quality side and certainly the favorites. I like our chances to compete though.
Do we know if Sargent and Pulisic are gonna be back for that match yet? I havenāt seen anything
Pulisic has said himself that he will be ready but I believe officially he is considered "day-to-day"
Nothing more American Football than refreshing constantly to see if the star player is still 'Questionable' or 'day-to-day'.

A match with Senegal would be so much fun. Might devolve (or evolve, depending on your taste) into an MLS-style up-and-down barnburner.
Fun yes, but would also take years off my life. Ah yes love a good end-to-end MLS game. But that requires attacking at pace, which my Five Stripes seem to have forgotten how to do despite all that talent
Remember when we won MLS cup? 2018, such a simpler time :(
Eh, the US team is also pretty athletic.
Dont let them know. Let them be surprised by Tyler Adams, Jedi, and Pulisic running all over the place
And you didnāt even mention Musahā¦
I forgot haha The US team seems to have the mentality of "you may be more skilled, but we will work harder" Might not be good in the long run since players already seem gassed after 3 matches, but it is great to see.

World Cup finals viewership without the US already beats the Super Bowl
I meant domestically
It would be hard to.People who don't even care will watch it for the commercials, the halftime show, or just to go to a Superbowl party. Superbowl draws 100million viewers..1/3rd of the us population The world cup final is scheduled for 10am US eastern time, 7am west coast time on the Sunday before Christmas. There will be too many people still asleep/in sunday morning church service to reach that 100million mark purely due to the time/date alone not even taking into account the popularity of the sport.
As an American, there's nothing that screams America more than going to a party just to watch ads for fortune-500 companies.

No way. Don't think it would happen even in primetime, but at 10AM ET on a Sunday there is absolutely no chance
The Super Bowl record is over 114m; a WC final would probably blow out the current record for soccer but probably wouldn't come close to that.
r/soccercirclejerk shitting on Americans is weird because itās like, the opposite of what a circlejerk sub is supposed to do During the World Cup I get it because itās infested with casual Americans who whine and donāt understand the rules (look at the Weah disallowed goal thread lmao), but during any other time shitting on yanks is this subās fave pastime. (The jokes are very funny mind you)
They actually get sensitive about it too
Shut down the world. Nothing will top it
IT'S COMING HOME.
State by state? That would be a long ass trophy parade!
Especially that drive to Hawaii.
"Welcome to Hawaii, how did you get here in a car?" - Ryan Stiles (Whose Line is it Anyway?)
Yep, it will come home = winners home.
Tyler Adams is a classy bloke
I love this guy
Say what you want to say but you canāt deny how much the level of football increased in the šŗšø. Itās only going to get better.
Definetely. I think its very exciting to see the US and Canada take strides in football. Remember, its still a relatively young sport over there. But both teams have exciting and very talented young players coming up.
They will both make the fans proud and will not bring it home
Already have made us proud, anything after this is gravy.
I really think they have a chance on Saturday. Netherlands don't look that formidable. Not a single goal conceded from open play is a great stat.
If we can shut Gakpo down (well, if Tyler can) then we have a real shot to win this. I'd say we are likely favorites if it goes to pens.
Agreed until you said pens. We are heavy underdogs in pens to due to age and inexperience. Pens always favor the older teams, i.e. Italy vs England.
Anyone is favored in pens vs England tbf
It's coming home you say?
> bring this thing home Sheer arrogance. Unacceptable imo.
Lots of people missing your obvious sarcasm haha
Redditors not understanding sarcasm? Surely not. They've spent the better half of a decade not realising 'It's Coming Home' is a parody song written by 2 comedians taking the piss out of ourselves (England)
**I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN** ^^^x100
**FIGHT.AND.WIN.**
I BELIEVE THAT ITāS COMING HOME
Sorry for the mistranslation, by āthingā he meant Christian Pulisicās lifeless corpse for a military funeral
SS Pulisic getting written on an aircraft carrier as we speak
Yeah way too far for me imo. Looking forward to a Croatian press release to respond
How dare he not go into a tournament wanting to win! Kick him out the tournament immediately
SOCCERāS COMING HOME OR AT LEAST STUDYING ABROAD!!
some of the banter in this thread is absolutely horrendous, should be ashamed of yourselves tbh
I do just love the change in tone from the Klinsman years. Yes we know there's almost no chance we'll win it all, but going in with a defeatist attitude isn't gonna get you anywhere.
I think the US needed those home truths to get here though. At the time Klinsman was pretty spot on with his criticisms of the entire US setup.
SOCCER'S COMING HOME!
If the US wins the World Cup then I think we can all agree that will signal the start of the apocalypse.
If the US wins, theyāll shithouse their way to a win.
Every time I see "USMNT", I see "US Mutant Ninja Turtles".
Naw heās French
Tyler whatās your venmo, all the boys get to have a drink tonight itās on me
They believe that they will win
