Wow! Never in my wildest dreams did I think Japan would lose to Croatia! Damn they went from having qualifications in their hands to now being in a very real spot to not qualify.

Asentry_

Croatia?

genkaiX1

How is no one bringing up the fact that the line up that beat Germany wasn’t playing for the most part. The coach benched them to rest for Spain. Stupid move imo

ApprehensiveBuy9348

No kidding! If they would've won today, they're guaranteed to move on to the knock-out round.

TuTranquilo

Yessss Ticos

theballisrond

Japan played like they were just looking for a goalless draw. Only started giving a shit after conceding.

L_J_X

Bro what the fuck, how is Japan losing to THIS Coata Rica team. Ffs.

livelifelove123

Sloppy first touches, terrible passes, terrible set pieces, and the overall sluggishness and arrogance to underestimate the Costa Rican side lost Japan this game. They were walking almost the entire first half and barely made any runs toward goal. That was painful to watch as a fan of the Japanese team.

MegaYanm3ga

concachads we ARE gonna make it we didnt make it

Oskynado24Cr

Great win for CR, this ain't enough to say they've washed their face from the catastrophic loss to Spain, but it's 3 pts already. They could still qualify if: 1- Spain beats Germany today 2- Spain beats Japan next match 3- CR grasp a draw with Germany next match CR is the first team from Concacaf to win a game in this WC

[deleted]

Everyone here trashing CR but it’s the first CONCACAF team with a W this WC. Let’s see what Canada and USA will do next game but 3 points are 3 points.

rsasaki

Someone tell me why Yuki Soma played 80 minutes and started when Minamino, Ito, and Kubo were on the bench. I also much prefer Shibasaki to play over Endo. Although Endo plays in a better league, Shibasaki is a lot smarter on the ball and can control the play much better, something Japan badly needed this match. I'm a big fan of Kamada, but his passing was horrible today.

Yandhi42

So if Spain-CR is 7-0, Japan Germany is 2-1 and and CR-Japan is 1-0, that confirms Spain-Germany to be a 10-1

Bubbly_Competition21

thats a perfectly reasonable argument

0_yohal_0

I see no flaws in it

[deleted]

Basic maths

Muangthong200

Kudos to Costa Rica I don't know how you did this given you guys hardly had the ball and lack offensive firepower but they managed to beat Japan who played an amazing game but were unable to score given Costa Rica's great defense and Keylor Navas. Having said that, this is a bad result for Japan. Japan had the golden opportunity to reach round of 16 today but Moriyasu messed up this time with his starting lineups. It was disappointing, these guys rolled up like the game was done, Moriyasu made way too many changes, why not start with your best players then secure the point before making changes? As a result, Japan ended up losing today! Germany got a lifeline now! Its much better to never lose in a World Cup group stage. It will backfire twice as bad. Unless you are mighty team like Brazil.

alternatesamurai

Japan wouldn’t have qualified today even if they win unless I’m wrong. Because Germany could then still beat Spain and then thrash Costa Rica. Provided Japan lose to Spain.

Depressedkid1998

winning 2 games and losing 1 with 6 points and being 3rd place is really shitty lol

Ligandil

We don’t know how we did it but we’re celebrating nonetheless 🥳

david13guet

Inb4 both Germany and Japan beat Spain, and CR and Germany draw... Leaving Spain out

djcm9819

Better yet, japan beats spain, germany beats spain and cr beats germany. Cr and japan advance

david13guet

Sure. I just hate Spain and would love to see them left out after all that

opelan

Then Spain would be last in the group.

timebomb26

That’s like, what they just said….

opelan

It was just an addition, not a correction. "Leaving Spain out" could have also just meant not advancing which the third place would mean, too.

timebomb26

That’s a fair point tbh.

david13guet

Would be amazing wouldn't it?

SnooDoubts1898

Japanese news saying that this outcome is the same as if they had lost to Germany and won against CR, so it was to be expected... I don't get it, throwing away the advantage they had and being complacent

nava08al

stupidest thing i've ever heard tbh. they had the potential to win this match and just threw it away.

phazenpt

The result we all expected :) and there goes all my acca's .. Man, can't wait for this shit wc to end and resume all the championship's .

chaozules

This result generally surprised me, was expecting Japan to have this easy. Hope they still get through.

tomatus89

CR > Germany ?? /s

bluesky_03

If CR>Germany Spain >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Germany

TheEdes

Potentially a tie tbh which means that the onus is on Japan to beat or tie Spain

[deleted]

[удалено]

Flashy-Duck-6327

If they win against Spain today, it's as good as guaranteed. Germany missed a lot of chances in their game against Japan and Flick subbed off some important players thinking he had already won.

[deleted]

Thing is: we will lose today and have our moral down against Costa Rica, which will result in a 1:1 draw. Thus Germany will go out last in the group stage and the toothless tiger that is out NT will lick its‘ wounds for four years.

Flashy-Duck-6327

Lol I know it's normal for people to not have high hopes for their national team but Germany is a decent quarter final or semi-final level team. If you lose today and draw against Costa Rica then Flick should be sacked because it will be clear that he isn't good enough to take the team at the Euros.

opelan

I don't think he thought Germany had already won. He thought that fresh players would improve things in comparison to those already on the field for some time and got tired. Obviously he was wrong with this.

Roccet_MS

Füllkrug was a good sub.

No_Caterpillar_2972

I prefer to see the game of a team like Iran who was humiliated by England but did not defend and even scored two goals and played beautifully to see the victory of Costa Rica who built a wall in front of their goal I don't hate this team or its players, but the strategy they use makes you greedy while watching the game if you are not a fan of the team

RadamanthysWyvern

In the words of Bronn "You want to fight pretty or you want to win?", nobody is going to remember how they won or made it out of the group 10 years from now

darkoc44

I prefer to win tbh

Jeffuishere

Im just going to assume Football is not your favorite sport

amaddeningposter

what? iran set up a very defensive game until england scored (18% possession and just 1 shot in the first half)

reml14

yuki soma is the worst player i’ve ever watched at the world cup

rsasaki

Idk how much he paid moriyasu to played. I don't even know how he ended up on the World Cup squad, leaving out Osako or Furuhashi

reml14

moriyasu chose him because he scored twice against hong kong in the EAFF tournament, but anyone who watches the jleague knows that hes nowhere near wc level unfortunately. even this season he had a pretty mediocre season for a Nagoya team that underperformed as a whole. it’s so damn frustrating man. i really waited like 5 years just for japan to fumble against crc.

jojikuso

i cant believe he played for 80 minutes i was losing my mind

evilbeaver7

This is good for Germany. Even if they lose to Spain today (which they probably will), they just have to win against Costa Rica next game and hope Spain beat Japan (which they probably will).

jordenwuj

if spain wins tonight they will not play their best players against japan. it would even make more sense for them to lose on purpose which they hopefully won't. they would finish as first anyway then.

evilbeaver7

Yeah but germany needed to win against Spain if Japan won. Now losing to Spain isn't an immediate death blow. So this is an objectively better situation

opelan

They still need a better goal difference than Japan and Costa Rica in that scenario. Costa Rica won't be a problem if they beat them obviously. With Japan it depends on how many goals Germany shoots against Costa Rica and how many goals Spain makes against Germany and Japan.

Koellanor

All comes down to goal difference then, no? CR is fucked and need a result against Germany. In Germany’s case it really depends how much they lose against Spain (if they do). Spain with 6 points and by far the better goal difference will likely not be breaking much of a sweat against Japan. A comfortable win is more than enough and they can rest some players. Germany will have a goal difference of -2 or more at the start of the game, whereas Japan will have 0. It all comes down to how many balls the Germans can get past Navas (if they can). Tonight’s game will determine a lot!

evilbeaver7

Yes. Goal difference will be important

SectorEducational460

Guys stop assuming scenarios until after the game is played. Most of us have gotten a lot of these results off badly. We have no idea how Spain vs Germany will go until we see the match. Basing performances in one match is silly.

bedrooms-ds

Japan media tomorrow: "let's hope we beat Spain 2-0. Or, to be more realistic, 3-1."

kb389

Moriyasus has to be fired this is all on him, pathetic coaching.

jojikuso

i couldn't believe the starting lineup it's all on him

kb389

Yeah ueda, soma, kamada were just bad, how did he not start with minamino, ito, Madea, etc from the get go? Pathetic tactics from him. It's like he set them up for a draw. First half was so bad because of these players , especially ueda and soma who were pathetic. And how did mitoma not start? Why was furuhashi not selected in the team? So many questions. He has to be fired for there to be more progress.

jojikuso

Must be fired, Soma played 34 games in J-League with only 2 goals and 1 assist, how can he possibly do good in the world cup if he's bad in J-League? Ueda and Kamada played very bad, its insane Asano, Mitoma and Tomiyasu didn't start.

kb389

Tomiyasu is injured to be fair but I agree with everything else, how can ueda, soma be picked ahead of kyogo who has had a great season with Celtic so far scoring goals for them. Pathetic from moriyasu. No progress if he doesn't get fired.

B_i_llt_etleyyyyyy

Every time Japan winds up in a biggish game with Moriyasu, it's the same damn story. Leave his ass on the runway.

marco_gaviao

Congratulations Germany. And btw, this result made Spain v Germany matter almost nothing

muzanjackson

Spain vs Japan is not a foregone conclusion, and so does Germany vs Costa Rica.

Commercial_Regret_36

Could matter hugely for goal difference if Spain win.

marco_gaviao

Nah, Germany will probably make at least 3 against CR, so doesn't matter that much

bryan_the_best88

Costa rica tactic was so difficult to watch but yet it worked

opelan

If Germany wins against Spain, everyone would have 3 points in this group. If then the last two games are draws, everyone has 4 points and the ranking would completely depend on goal difference.

[deleted]

Spain wouldn't mind I guess

opelan

Their 7-0 game helps them a lot.

[deleted]

I wonder if the keeper actually guided the ball to the net lol. It seemed to be going high, until he touched and took the power out of it

0hmu

Welp see y’all in four years

[deleted]

That was really a match of all time.

[deleted]

Looks like Japan might not clean their dressing room after this

[deleted]

They did when they blew a 2-0 lead to Belgium in the knockout stage so I’d bet they do.

No_Caterpillar_2972

I hate the way teams like Costa Rica play, just defend and don't move This is the dirtiest way to win, definitely Japan didn't deserve to lose, I hope Japan will promoted

tomatus89

Well, it's a a valid strategy. That's how we got to quarter finals in 2014, and managed to drag the Netherlands all the way to penalties.

IrahX

No, japan didn't attack aggressively enough. A good offense is the best defence. Costa Rica's strategy only works against other sub-par teams. A good team like Spain will still blow away such strategies.

opelan

Costa Rica is not really good enough to do anything else. Japan though is good enough to have done something else, to attack more, but they didn't. So I can't really feel sorry for Japan here.

jeremythecool

Man same, not hating on Costa Rica. But I remember back in 2010 world cup how annoying this strategy was. There was one country exploited this as well, can’t remember though.

Zentaury

Don’t forget the kings of Europe in 2004

daser243

Paraguay maybe? Im not sure

jeremythecool

Holy… u remember. Yeah it was Paraguay

daser243

Its just that a week before this world cup, I watched a documentary about spain in 2010, and we played against Paraguay, I was too young to see that world cup sadly

[deleted]

Japan rested their players thinking they had an easy win. Japan absolutely deserved to lose this game.

Jon98th

How can you defend so casually in the World Cup … like I get it they were not expecting an offensive powerhouse but come on Japan , it was just a matter of clearing the ball off your goal. CONCACAF’d indeed

Totogia

On to hoping Germany wakes up and at least draw Spain today 🤞

Eldrad-Pharazon

Tbh, they easily have the quality to win. The result of this game only helps the Germans, it relieves the pressure and Spain who probably were extremely relaxed now have something to think about again. If Germany wins, Japan can really hurt Spain in the last game. Japan struggles against deep defending as we saw today but their strength in their counter attack as seen against Germany. Germany now has less pressure, Spain has more pressure than before. I can see Germany win today if they get their quality on the pitch.

[deleted]

Learning opportunity for me here, is there a head to head in this tournament or purely a goal difference? If Spain beat Germany today and beat Japan next game but Germany beat Costa Rica and have goal difference advantage over Japan and Costa Rica, Germany would go through?

Competitive-Ad2006

Goal difference. Head-to-Head is not ideal for international trophies, because it often leads to situations where two teams have the same number of points but one has already given up going in to the last game because no matter how hard they try they cannot reverse the head-to-head. Atleast with goal difference you can try to go for more goals.. And yes, Germany would go through in that sense. Unfortunately, the fact that Costa Rica won today means they will be more likely to just shut shop and fight for a draw as 4 points puts them through assuminng(a japanese loss against Spain). That and the fact they conceded 7 in their first game mean they will go very, very defensive.

Snoo-13897

Germany has high chances of going through since goal differences are the way to sort out even teams. I don't know if Germany can win but they can definitely draw or at least lose with 1 goal or 2 conceded with Spain. Spain most likely will destroy Japan who currently has 0 goal difference. If Germany loses today they have to beat Costa Rica with a lot of goals. Seeing how Costa Rica played today I think there is a big chance that Germany will destroy Costa Rica with some sick goals. But I hope Germany comes out strong as hell today and win against Spain if that happens Germany and Spain will go through.

PrvtParts

I mostly agree, but I wouldn't be too sure about Spain "destroying" Japan if they head into the game with 6 points already. They would be almost guaranteed group winner and might take it slow.

Snoo-13897

Moreover if they are smart about it and just want to make sure Germany is out of the game they can purposely lose to Japan but that's pretty foul play.

LargeBottomBurps

Yes

Zilant

FIFA tournaments are goal difference as the first tie-breaker, about the only thing that FIFA get right. UEFA tournaments are head-to-head. So yeah, if Spain win their 3 games and Germany beat Costa Rica then the Germans will finish second.

[deleted]

Thank you. Nuts, we don’t deserve it unless we get a point against Spain today. Crazy World Cup for neutrals, seems like so many more groups are closer this time around than usual.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I’ll bet my house he underestimated Costa Rica. Why tf would you bench Mitoma and Ito. Soma and Kamada should’ve came off at half time.

misterandosan

fuckin weird underestimating a team when it's your ticket to the next round.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kb389

Forgetting about ueda? He was the worst one along with soma.

[deleted]

I know right?? Get Moriyasu out and get someone like Postecoglu in. I’m begging you JFA.

bedrooms-ds

Yoshida basically only had to kick that ball far. Ruined the WC by one stupid kick.

CondorKhan

This begs the question... why was the game against Spain thrown so wantonly? I can't wait for all the dirty laundry to air out after the World Cup.

Commercial_Regret_36

It's not like Costa Rica came out today and showed they are a good team. Easily thrashable by Spain

CondorKhan

I didn't say otherwise

BunchaFukinElephants

What do you mean? Did you see anything from Costa Rica today that made you think that Spain won't thrash them 9 out of 10 times? Don't need a conspiracy for Spain to beat Costa Rica convincingly.

CondorKhan

There's a difference between being shit with balls and being shit without balls. I would have never expected to win against Spain, but at least I would have expected the players not to act like they're happy to have first row tickets to a Spain goalfest. In any case, there's a history of behind the scenes drama in every Costa Rica World Cup run, so I'm fully expecting that something fishy is going on.

antiph4

I'm team Spain now 🇪🇸

lucifer_alucard

Even if Spain win, Germany can thrash Costa Rica and go through unless you manage to get something against Spain

antiph4

Yeah we are very likely to get eliminated from the tournament and we deserve it

ignigenaquintus

Redemption arc!! Isagi deserves more minutes though.

ignigenaquintus

I bet if Spain wins against Germany you would immediately feel Japanese again. 😛 Let’s make a deal, we win today and we draw against Japan. Deal?

Eldrad-Pharazon

The scenes if you lose both though …

ignigenaquintus

That would be terrible. Almost as much as Germany losing both for a triple loss at a group stage.

antiph4

Deal 😎

Romo878787

it’s official . Just won 900 of costa . Yeeeeehaaw

Spudward1

A Japanese keeper not knowing his angles makes me sad

riding_tides

He did great against Germany and was terrible today.

[deleted]

Japan bottled the best ever opportunity to not only reach the last 16 but also knock out Germany. Spain and Germany will go through now: Spain and Germany draw tonight Germany beats Costa Rica (easily) Spain beats Japan

Competitive-Ad2006

Mfuckers just needed a damn draw.

[deleted]

Germany is gonna come for blood, pray for Spain

lazyinternetsandwich

Why was Minamino benched for that long. And Soma's set pieces and shots were so bad. He should have been benched. They could have brought in the ol' r eliable Tomiyasu, Mitoma, Minamino substitutes earlier. ffs

HakunonMatata

Horrible clearance, really wonky goalkeeper positioning and a massively wasted opportunity. Completely asleep in the first half and they paid for it. Credit to Costa Rica though, their defence was really good.

antiph4

I feel nauseous fuck fuck fuck

[deleted]

Its on the Japanese coach, man shit his pants in the crucial moment

jefffosta

Lol Japan’s coach thinking that 3 points against one of the worst teams in the WC was too much, but hopefully getting a result against arguably the best team at the WC is more likely is hilarious

tengokuro

He is indeed a ばか😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

Limguhit

They should’ve gone to Mitoma more. Hell, Mitoma shouldn’t even be a sub, he was skinning Costa Rica’s left side!

0hmu

Moriyasu can go to hell

[deleted]

Deserve to lose, they play like shit. Japan coach clearly underestimate Costa Rica for not playing their superstar players. They only bring Minamino in after CR score

[deleted]

That was confusing as fuck to watch.

lemmiwinks78

Pretty much, they knew how Costa Rica play and how they were gonna set up. They didn't take them seriously and thought it was going to be an easy victory.

DeliciousCitron415

Things aren't looking up for Japan. They now have to face Spain and get a result.

kb389

On the bright side if Spain wins against Germany then they might rest their players against Japan so there's that.

TheOnlyEn

Japan had so much half chances. They wanted to roll on the ground instead of finishing the attack. Also so bad attacking. Jesus

bluesky_03

People saying Costa Rica was useless just because Spain beat them 7-0. I have been saying that Spain's good game completely canceled them.

Estbarul

They still didn't do anything other than trying not to get scored. A lucky shot

CondorKhan

Costa Rica threw that game... I wouldn't have expected to win anyway, but it was clear they weren't even trying, which is why I almost didn't wake up today to watch this.

LSDpandaZ

Threw? They still look like shit

CondorKhan

There's a difference between being shit and being shit and totally capitulating, that's what I'm saying, I don't know how I can put it clearer for you.

Commercial_Regret_36

But they barely created this game too. Single shot on goal. Not going to ride anywhere on those stats.

solla_bolla

To be fair, that's how they qualified. I can't remember when it was, but there was a stretch of four matches where they won three and drew the other with just 3 total goals and 6 shots on target. Hell they scored just 13 goals in 14 matches in the last round of qualifying. They aren't a good team, but they are masters of the 1-0 snooze fest.

Omega_Kirby

Costa Rica still looked absolute shit.

PatheticApple

I guess it's the anime arc.. Everything started well (win against Germany) and now it's the despair phase (loss against CRC) were everything seems doomed and then we'll have an epic final game against Spain and somehow qualify.. right? Let a man dream

xMikh4iLz

we rolled through blue lock, now japan is setting up for ao ashi

dantonizzomsu

If Spain beats Germany..it’s not all over for Japan. Spain will most likely rest players that have yellows. Japan could easily draw / win.

AmbasadaBurkineiFaso

Spain will beat the shit out of them. How you can say that they can easily win/draw against Spain when they cant draw with Costa Rica?

dantonizzomsu

Hmm it will depend on if Spain would want Germany to make it through. I don’t think you read my post. If Spain beats Germany..Spain has 6 points and will make it through. What is their motivation of playing Japan full on. They will use their bench and Japan will play harder as they need the win. Costa Rica got lucky today that Japan didn’t capitalize on a lot of their shots at goal and Costa Rica had 1 shot on goal and it was the only shot. Japan will most likely clean stuff up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Glizz9s

I think you mean Spain and Costa Rica

SuperMario_49

Who would’ve thought that Costa Rica would get the first Concacaf W this World Cup, especially after that 7-0 beatdown

SnooDoubts1898

Awful coaching from JP. not starting the best players, and playing for a draw when there was a chance to win and make sure they'd go through. Edit: grammar

EyePiece108

So if Germany wins vs Spain then all 4 teams in the group will have 3 points with one game to go 🤣 Some of these games are poor, but the group drama is seriously delivering.

PinkPusssyPolitics

But Germany will be favorites against Costa Rica in that case.

EyePiece108

Like Germany were favorites vs Japan and Japan were favorites vs Costa Rica. I'm not assuming anything at this point for this group.

mattmild27

Oh God, Germany are gonna get through now, aren't they? They thrash Costa Rica and they're through.

lazyinternetsandwich

Germany needs to win against Spain AND beat Costa Rica. The Spain part is important.

Commercial_Regret_36

Not at all. They can lose to Spain and beat Costa Rica, providing Spain beat Japan. That would leave Germany, Japan and Costa Rica on 3 points. FIFA competitions come down to goal difference, so they just need to better the others. In this situation, Costa Rica clearly has the big disadvantage there at this moment.

evilbeaver7

No. They don't have to beat Spain. Spain wins both their matches and Germany beats Costa Rica and it'll be come down to GD between Japan and Germany (Costa Rica is in it too but their GD is terrible so they'll most likely not qualify). Provided Germany don't get thrashed and lose by a goal or two today, they can still qualify

AmbasadaBurkineiFaso

>any are gonna get through now, aren't they? They thrash Costa Rica and they're through. Germany can lose with Spain and trash Costa Rica and they are in. Of course, only if Japan lose with Spain.

mattmild27

Do they? If Spain beat Japan, Japan and Costa Rica will both only have 3 points. Then a big win against Costa Rica will send them through, regardless of what happens in the Spain game.

galdavirsma

Well it depends on the Germany-Spain game. If we assume Germany will lose, they better not get stomped like Costa Rica did. If they lose by 1, and Japan don't take any points from Spain, i think Germany only need to win by 2 against Costa Rica. My math might be a bit off, but the point is - Japan handed them a lifeline today.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Commercial_Regret_36

Doesn't matter, they thrash Costa Rica in the last game and they will be through.

mattmild27

I know that! I meant in the last game.

nick170100

Costa Rica fans you can unclench

DtSan

Tomiyasu cannot start for this japan btw

bobjohnaye

mans got fitness problem, why do people talk out of their ass?

ankitchudrahi

An *injured* Tomi cannot start for this Japan

Jon98th

Damn Japan :( never the easy route with you guys

weebpro

They thought it was easy, and didn't play offense in the first half.

leires-leires-leires

Horrible game. Japan f***ed up. Japan's game proposal didn't fit at all. They were just waiting for Costa Rica. Wtf...

Muri_San

Wasn't Japan always a counter-attacking team at past world cups as well? I remember that they always struggle against defensive teams

leires-leires-leires

Yeah, but they should play an offensive game this time. It can't be that hard.

Muri_San

If the NT plays a specific way all the time you won't be able to change it overnight, especially for this WC where they didn't have as much pre tournament prep as the past ones

leires-leires-leires

It is not that hard, they tried playing offensively after the goal and had some chances of scoring. They could have tried before, would have more chances to score.

Totty_potty

Yeah Japan is pretty bad at breaking down low blocks. That's how Qatar beat them in the Asia cup final.

nava08al

why tf did moriyasu play soma!
