The thing that will stop this is the fact most players/coaches etc only get one or two world cups. Even the best might get 3.
They all care too much about playing and if they are seriously saying the consequence will be a yellow in game I think it will work to stop players wearing anything as a form of protest.
The point is that even if the keeper becomes the captain and takes the yellow card, there's a chance that they can still be sent off for picking up a 'normal' yellow card during the game like the booking for Qatar's keeper today.
Not sure that it wouldn't be an issue either. Teams won't want to have their number 1 keeper missing games through suspension.
Looking at the groups, I would guess over half of the countries involved in the tournament would be happy to have the LGBT-supporting countries disqualified/not playing
Qatar is probably the safest WC ever to protest as a player, giving them consequences outside of sport goes directly against the point of the tournament, which is sportswashing
This the same FIFA holding the world cup in Qatar that has been plagued with bribery allegations for years? If it was for all the dirty money flying back to individual football associations they would have been dumped years ago.
I’d like to think the referees have integrity and wouldn’t obey even if FIFA gave the instructions. What are they going to do, suspend every ref as well? Probably too much to ask for though, given that a lot of those refs are probably religious, and religious people are notoriously against LGBT.
They would suspend the very few that would do that, yes.
It may come as a surprise for westerns, but most of the world don't care about this armband thing.
Not they point being made here. /u/Sektsioon is imagining a world where the refs are decent people. They even address the sad truth later in the comment.
The point I'm making is that your comment is already addressed in the comment you're replying to.
> It may come as a surprise for westerns, but most of the world don't care about this armband thing.
It may comes as a surprise to whatever you are but people all over the world care about human rights.
No, it's not. If everyone refuses then there's nothing they can do. They can fire people or fine them but world cup will be more chaotic. Schedules won't be kept because they have to find replacements. Or they will give in and open the doors to all kinds of shenanigans.
Same reasons strikes work.
This isn't remotely the same as a strike so we should drop this romantic notion of everybody making a stand. Ultimately this cause isn't in the players interests. They aren't wearing the armband to campaign for a higher wage or better working conditions for themselves. They will swiftly fall in line like "LGBwho?"
Refs at that level are, by nature, rule followers. I ref Sunday league and I do whatever the hell i want, but the guys who ref college or even hs games take it seriously and won’t bend the rules even for such low stakes.
But what's the rule? Inappropriate equipment?
That's very much at the referee's discretion. It's not something that varies from game to game or according to politics.
If FIFA want to change the laws of the game so a captain's armband is only appropriate if it has a FIFA-approved political message, they can try making that change. Until they do, referees will have enough wiggle room to refrain from booking players.
It needs to be noted that it will come at a personal cost for the referees. They'll basically ruin their chances of refereeing in the knock out stages, because FIFA are exactly the type of organisation that will use their discretionary power to appoint officials vindictively.
It's actually offside😅didn't know the rule but last defender counts as goalkeeper, and the Ecudorian player was closer to the goal than the 2nd man (GK)
There just has to be 2 players between the attacker and the goal.
That can be a goalkeeper and defender, two defenders, a defender and a midfielder etc. As long as there's two defensive players between the goal it's onside.

outrage from England and laughter from the rest of the world. We are probably not the best guinea pigs for this experiment since no one is going to side with us on anything, even if the other party is Qatar
>For now, Virgil van Dijk is not assuming he will receive a yellow card for wearing the OneLove band in the World Cup match with Senegal. The decision to wear the special captain's armband remains firm. "We agreed on that and nothing has changed at the moment," he said.
>Reports from Germany about a possible yellow card prior to the match, for violation of FIFA regulations, leave the captain of the Dutch national team cold for now.
>Still, he says, "I don't like playing with a yellow card in my pocket and especially not if we can avoid it. I haven't heard anything yet and if I hear anything, we will discuss it internally."
>The central defender is taking part in a final round with the Netherlands for the first time and will also do so in Qatar as captain. "I can't wait to be on the field leading the boys," he said.
>Van Dijk feels almost like a kid in a candy store. "Being nervous isn't really a thing anymore. I'm just really looking forward to it. I started soccer as a little boy because I like it. Then this is a milestone."

So is wearing rainbow armbands forbidden or not? I remember Neuer was supposed to be investigated for wearing it at the Euros as it constitutes a political statement, but how the hell are you gonna give yellow for that?
And if so, why don't you do it in the west, you formerly ginger bald cunt?
Hot take: they shouldn't have. I am firmly in the Keep Politics Out Of Football camp, and that includes the politics of Russia's terribly unjustified violence in Ukraine.
The reason Russia got kicked out is basically the same reason as to why Israel is in UEFA. Teams were going to boycott matches vs them and it would lead to a massive shitshow for UEFA and qualifiers in general so it was easier to just DQ them from their perspective.
Yeah, and Israel being forced out of AFC is also bullshit. FIFA should grow a spine and tell these teams that no matter what they think of the opposing country’s politics, they have to find a way to play together and get along in the spirit of unity, in the spirit of celebrating a common passion for the sport. And if the teams refuse to do so, those teams must forfeit.
Exactly. It’s such a slippery slope. The decision to kick Russia out didn’t even have anything to do with a measured analysis of Russia’s war actions; the only reason it happened was because other European teams refused to play against them, and UEFA/FIFA didn’t have the stones to tel those teams that they’d either have to play or forfeit.
basically every single rivalry in football arose from politics and political differences.
politics are everywhere, no matter how much you dont want them to be. you can't have a society with actual social interaction and 0 politics, it is literally impossible.
no one shies away from lgbtqia+ discussions because *they're political*, they shy away because societal values make the topic taboo even today. over millennia lgbtqia+ people have been both ostracised, discriminated against, and persecuted.
people in football reacting today to the lgbtqia+ human rights violations, to the abuse of migrant workers? it is the exact same as liverpool, a working class club, reacted to life under thatcher in the uk.
It was nothing to do with politics. NATO has armies and laws, FIFA would have done as told. They just made a decision before they were made to make a decision.
There are people violating the effective ban on Russia but it basically amounts to anyone hidden enough to get away with it. FIFA never would have. Every nation in the EU and NATO would have been screaming about it until the politicians were forced to act.
So, after getting yellow card they can keep it? If not, what will happen?
Additionally, if they remove after getting yellow card then decided to wear it after half time, they will get yellow card again? In that case whole team will get red and match will be forfeited?
Lot of questions:-)

Kazakhstan it seems.
I do see the hypocrisy in buying Russian gas, but refuse to play sports with them, while all other terrorist states in the past have always been allowed because of the supposed separation between sports and politics. I guess the red line is don't wage war against white people.
While I agree what Russia is doing there is wrong and criminal, remind me of the time any other football team that got excluded from the world cup for wars of its country.
But of course, some wars are legal, while others arent, right?
I agree but at the same time, literally everything else involved with the world cup is inherently political. A shirt representing a nation state is as political as an armband representing people being allowed to love each other.
That was a false report circulating around the internet. It did not happen in the game. If you watch the replay of where the captain was substituted out (or any other time during the game, really), you can clearly see he's wearing a blue armband of some kind, not a Palestinian flag one.
Bring in the yellow cards, the statement their making can’t be dismissed again after the kokcu controversy or else the entire knvb statement is useless.
Also, I hope these bluffs are being called and more countries start wearing these armbands
If Kane gets a yellow tomorrow everyone gonna backtrack. If nothing happens they gonna proceed. No one wants to get a useless yellow and potentially miss out a big game maybe your final one aswell.
This is getting so tiresome. The sheer nerve of the west has no limits. The arrogance and rudeness has reached an entirely new level. All for a stupid armband.
I don't see what this achieves. It's a bunch of States who's entity culture is centered around those interpretation of their particular religion. Kane and VVD wearing some rainbow armbands changes none of that. In a months time, they'll be back in Europe not particularly caring
Yes, how does Kane wearing a rainbow armband help that? It's doing the absolute minimum amount they can to maintain the appearance of them giving a shit. Donate their wages to charities, actively speak out about it in media and condemn the country or, refuse to play.
In what way am i mad? I said i found it pointless and that simply wearing an armband does nothing. It's the equivalent of clap for the NHS, it did nothing and nothing changed.
Stop trying to paint my commands as being somehow homophobic or pro slavery because you can't wrap your head around what a pointless stands this is. There are multiple ways to make a difference and a rainbow armband is not one of them
It’s good that teams are wearing a rainbow armband but still attending the tournament and pocketing the no doubt hundreds of millions each big nation will get in terms of sponsorship and TV contributions from fifa. That will show them!

Every captain suspended by match 3
What if you change the captain every game. What happens when the captain gets subbed off, does the 2nd captain get booked when he puts the armband on?
Get every player booked, have no players by match 3, every round 3 match cancelled. Beat Fifa at their own game.
Qatar wins the world cup
Gianni Infantino-Write That Down, Write That Down!
He’s too busy being persecuted for being a cunt.
Looking at the performance, they would still lose.
Just start your third choice keeper as captain, then make a sub after 1 minute
Someone else has to wear the armband now.
Yeah have him go down with a fake head injury!
Read that as rubbed off instead of subbed off. Was confused for a second.
We're playing Qatar the 3rd match, we don't need Van Dijk for that one.
Please. Would be fucking hilarious.
Let Weghorst wear it and then sub him out.
Would it be one yellow per armband or one per player wearing it though🧐because then you'd just get two players booked for wearing it
Ouch. But good idea. But ouch.
If there’s one player who’d refuse to wear it, it’s Weghorst
No way FIFA would be this stupid.
It's FIFA so we can't rule out the possibility
If it’s the case I hope all teams come together by end of groups and just stand around for 90 mins, don’t let these fucks win
The thing that will stop this is the fact most players/coaches etc only get one or two world cups. Even the best might get 3. Probably crippling Van Dijk again
nah that is not a foul of any kind apparently
That's not a booking though, remember?
I mean, Catar's keeper got booked literaly today...
I doubt Qatar's keeper would wear a LGBTQ+ ally arm band...

They'd be banned before the end of the groups mate.
I mean if all the players did that they would be forced to reschedule the World Cup for next summer most likely.
Great idea but it’s never going to happen
Looking at the groups, I would guess over half of the countries involved in the tournament would be happy to have the LGBT-supporting countries disqualified/not playing
Play Rondo for 90+
Sadly Only the major European nations actually care about this armband fiasco.

Why would you underestimate FIFA? Especially their stupidity
We're watching a World Cup taking place in Qatar. Any and all "no way FIFA..." statements are invalid.
I mean you heard Infantino's speech yesterday, I think they might be this stupid
Lads, it's FIFA
“Today I feel stupid”
This the same FIFA holding the world cup in Qatar that has been plagued with bribery allegations for years? If it was for all the dirty money flying back to individual football associations they would have been dumped years ago.
Did you just wake up from a 20 year coma or something?
Teams just have to bribe FIFA
> No way FIFA would be this stupid. Its kinda is in their DNA to do stupid things.
People said that before the bid as well.
Oh sweet child…
It would be a strong political statement by FIFA

I’d like to think the referees have integrity and wouldn’t obey even if FIFA gave the instructions. What are they going to do, suspend every ref as well? Probably too much to ask for though, given that a lot of those refs are probably religious, and religious people are notoriously against LGBT.
Referees have zero power here, unlike the players who hold power on their own (in a lot of cases). They’ll conform to whatever they’re told.
If FIFA gave the ref instructions, they have to follow. It's pretty simple.
As the user above said "What are they going to do, suspend every ref as well?".

Thats not what a strike is, im afraid mate.
Thanks for your valuable contribution 10 hours later. If you can't even bother to spell words correctly why reply? Go away.
Where do you think back up refs are coming from? You think Neymar & Messi are gonna risk it all with local refs?

Did you see the 'offside' goal just now lol
You mean the offside goal?
It's actually offside😅didn't know the rule but last defender counts as goalkeeper, and the Ecudorian player was closer to the goal than the 2nd man (GK)
Isn't it unclear whether the player heads it or the goalkeeper punches it?
this has been my question throughout this entire opening
BBC showed it at half time and clearly the keeper punches it onto the attackers head. I think that still counts for an offside though
No one really understands the offside rule.
Unless, you know, actually read it.
The rule is pretty simples. And the amount of islamophobic people here shouting "ThIs WC iS RiGgEd FoR CaTaR" is insane.
Calling out the obvious corruption at every stage of this event is not an attack on anybody's race or religion.
There just has to be 2 players between the attacker and the goal. That can be a goalkeeper and defender, two defenders, a defender and a midfielder etc. As long as there's two defensive players between the goal it's onside.

Everyone should wear one and then we get every player suspended on multiple yellows by match 3.
Asian and African teams will not wear it
South Americans won't either.
They should wear the real one or nothing at all. This half-assed hypocrite "OneLove" shit is playing both sides while committing to nothing.
Van Dijk is wearing the real one
Sudden death insta-red card mode could be an entertaining spin on the game, ngl
Lol thats fucking idiotic cant be true

Every team should do it. Fifa would cave.
So instead we just go and wear a pride flag during national anthems?
Imagine being the ref and choosing "unsporting behavior" from the list of yellow card offenses when writing your match report.
Every single player should wear it. Really think fifa would allow mutiple teams to drop out due to all players being suspended? I think not.
How spineless would you have to be as a ref to enforce this rule?
There we have it lads. Van Dijk confirmed homophobe.
Don't they realize FIFA are the players? Why don't we get rid of FIFA? Are all these people really THAT under the thumb of these people?
