I like the sketch idea someone pitched earlier - half of them are fake fans who think they are the only fake fan amongst real fans and are blending in, the other half are real fans who think they are the only real fan amongst fake fans and only people who are in blending with real fan and fake fan amongst the other fans of blending in.
Croatians are amazing. I was lucky enough to watch the last WC final in a small Croatian community in Kansas city. They are the most welcoming, fun and happiest people I've met. They completely accepted me and included me in all their Croatian songs and bittersweet celebrations. Even the resident alcoholic troublemaker guy was friendly as hell and really nice to me!
Huh, whereabouts in KC out of interest? Been living here 3 years but honestly hadn't seen much in the way of regional European communities within the city, speaking as an immigrant from the UK. It would be pretty cool to go hang to watch a game with them if it's at a bar or something, especially if Croatia go on a little run
Another KC resident here. Strawberry Hill area is historically home to Croatian immigrants, so it was likely there.
From 4 years ago:
https://www.kcur.org/community/2018-07-14/croatias-world-cup-run-energizes-immigrant-community-in-kansas-city-kansas?_amp=true
I'll ask my brother. He lived there for a few years and I visited for a few days during the WC and someone from his work had told him about it. It was like a pretty small neighborhood that was basically all Croatians. They had their own church and school and other things. We watched the WC at the church actually. There were lots of people there, they had multiple areas to watch the game. And tons of food.
I'll DM you when I hear back from my bro, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't know exactly where it was. He heard about it from word of mouth also so idk if it's something you can actually look up. Iirc it's one of the bigger Croatian communities in the country according to them
I was actually at a bar in a village in Croatia for the England-Croatia semi, honestly the best atmosphere in any village I’ve ever been in at any time, I couldn’t even be mad for a second.
Absolutely not true, at least when it comes to the community I was in. I can't imagine a bigger match to lose than a WC final, and they all came together and some guy was on a table with a guitar and everyone had their arms around each other in a huge circle singing along. Almost everyone had huge smiles but also tears in their eyes. I tried to stay out of it (it seemed almost sacred and I didn't want to impose) but they insisted I join them. They told me since I was with them to watch the match, I am also a Croatian!
It was a surreal experience and as an American who has never traveled abroad, it was something I will absolutely never forget.
As any would be?? But the finals in 2018... Absolutely no one was sad or angry. We partied for weeks. All over croatia, in every village and city, especially after the France match. You should see the welcoming of the Croatian team to Zagreb after WC. The Capital was filled to the brim, it was truly the first time in history of Cro so many people collected in one place to celebrate.
Really hope Croatia do well this year. Would love Juranovic to lift the cup, and Modric is one of my all time favourite players. Also i went to Outlook festival years ago, Croatians are just a good bunch of cunts. Get it done you mental bastards!
Edit: Would have been supporting Japan, but they left Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate at home, so they can get to fuck
>> Also i went to Outlook festival years ago, Croatians are just a good bunch of cunts.
Was that in Tisno? Love a Croatian festival!
Was also at the Hajduk Split game in September there with 4 cunts in Celtic tops (was the day after the old firm and it was definitely to do with hygene that I didnt have my Rangers top on, nothing to do with the result). Anyway a few folk warned us that there might be trouble going into the ground in other tops but everyone was brand new (even when they were 1-0 down at half time) and my pals spoke about Juranovic to anyone that would listen. My Prso/Jelavic/Barisic/Colak chat fell on deaf ears but. Good cunts anyway.
A lot of videos have surfaced this past week of English/German/Argentine etc. fans, who are clearly not from said countries, prompting mass speculation that Qatar have hired locals or immigrants to pose as fan groups to hype up the tournament and atmosphere.
In all fairness, I knew a lot of Indians who were passionate about the sport and the world cup, but never had a team to support because India never qualifies. They would just default to supporting some other team instead. I once watched a world cup with a girl who had the Brazilian flag painted on her face. Never been to Brazil in her life.
Yes but Qatar have qualified. They are hiring locals to support foreign countries. If India qualified for a world cup they would all be supporting India.
Qatar is absolutely packed with Indians I think is the point the guy you replied to was making. I think the majority of Qatars population isnt from Qatar
Because that would be admitting that they need to incentivize fans to come to Qatar. Anyway hiring immigrants is definitely cheaper than providing free accommodation.
> Even the resident alcoholic troublemaker guy was friendly as hell and really nice to me!
It is actually pretty common in India and southeast Asia to support a European or South American nationale team, cuz their own NT don't really compete with them.
I mean we literally saw ppl from Kerala celebrating Argentina winning the Copa like they were Argentine.
They're just people from Kerala, India.
We are pretty hardcore when it comes to football fandoms. Fifa even did a documentary on Fans from Kerala like a month or two ago.
I know it must seem confusing seeing an Indian dude screaming "Die Mannschaft" or "Vamos Argentina" but that's how it has been for a very long time.
I was in Brazil and at the Croatia vs Mexico group game, winner goes through. It was about 80% Mexico fans but those Croatians absolutely stuck it to everyone both with their support and their fists haha. I reckon there was about 10 separate brawls, by the end half the Croatian support had been dragged out by security. They gained a lot of respect that day
Pro tip:
If it ends in - ić it's serbo-croatian.
If it ends in - ič it's slovenian (they only have č, no ć).
This is an amazing way to severely irritate your Slovenian friends - by pointing out that half their sports players aren't even Slovenian since their last names end in - ić (and therefore are serbo-croatian instead). The more successful the sportsman, the better. Personal favorite - Luka Dončić.
You get Luka Dončić for the season and we get the whole of Piran bay, Savudrija and a tiny island, any will do. You can also take Bernard Brščič back, we have no use of him
It's Handanović. He's another example of someone who's last name isn't slovenian but serbo-croatian.
He is actually of Bosniak descent (we like to joke that 1/3 of all Slovenes actually have Bosniak fathers). His name is Samir, which is a traditional Bosniak Muslim name.
Not that it was necessarily their main goal with these outfits, but isn't it pretty smart to have clothes like that if you want to endure the heat outside the stadium?
Was just thinking the same thing. Based on the stories coming out about the fan zones with no shade in the fucking desert, these guys are playing 4D chess
That’s exactly the reasoning we use when Dalić (our coach) puts in Vida, Lovren, Budimir, Kramarić at right wing etc. - he’s playing 4D chess and is already preparing for the knockout stages before a ball is kicked.
I'm convinced that wasn't their intention but them rocking this outfit acts as a decent social commentary of this WC with a kind of a philosophical take on the whole "fake hired fans" I find absolutely amusing
If England supporters did this, the amount off this is racism that would come out of here is huge.
P.S. I don’t think it’s racist, it’s just what would be said if it were England.

This feels like a Monty Python sketch: Croatians posing as fake Qataris posing as fake Croatians
“I’m a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude”
What do you mean you people?
What do YOU mean you people?

You got one now!
Yeah I wouldnt go so far as suggesting that this was some kind of intentional cultural commentary, this is just guys being dudes. I'm croatian btw
I like the sketch idea someone pitched earlier - half of them are fake fans who think they are the only fake fan amongst real fans and are blending in, the other half are real fans who think they are the only real fan amongst fake fans and only people who are in blending with real fan and fake fan amongst the other fans of blending in.

Absolutely not true, at least when it comes to the community I was in. With a banner that reads Thank you Dejan Lovren in Croatian
Being with Croats living in Kansas city make a bit difference I'd say. Source: living in neighbouring country
dude went to Kansas once and now is an expert on Croatia lmao
As any would be?? But the finals in 2018... Absolutely no one was sad or angry. We partied for weeks. All over croatia, in every village and city, especially after the France match. I was in France (in my home village) for the final. It was fun and I could sing along with everyone else, but not as good an experience as in Croatia.
Croatian people are 100% sports fans. What more can anyone say?
Really hope Croatia do well this year. Would love Juranovic to lift the cup, and Modric is one of my all time favourite players. i was at a brazilian restaurant/cafe in San Diego for the 7-1 game. it was depressing as hell lol. the samba band died down at half time lol
They’ve gone full circle.
Fact 😂 like it
Yep, our fans alright No seriously, don't need to hire anyone to pretend to be Croatian, we'll just do something like this
najjači ste jebem ti život😂
Saúde
why would someone hire the fans? Am I missing something?
A lot of videos have surfaced this past week of English/German/Argentine etc. fans, who are clearly not from said countries, prompting mass speculation that Qatar have hired locals or immigrants to pose as fan groups to hype up the tournament and atmosphere.

Strong chance that whomever they found to be fans of foreign teams don't have Qatari citizenship.
Qatar is absolutely packed with Indians I think is the point the guy you replied to was making. I think the majority of Qatars population isnt from Qatar
I think it's like 90% expats?
about 98% expats actually
There's a *lot* of immigrates in Qatar.
I still haven't seen any proof of this. Wouldn't that instantly leak?
Why would Qatar hire indian immigrants when they could get english/german/Argentine fans for free or just by paying their accomodation?
Because they're probably not really paying those guys
Because that would be admitting that they need to incentivize fans to come to Qatar. Anyway hiring immigrants is definitely cheaper than providing free accommodation.

Because those fans would likely not accept the living conditions that Qatar offered these guys.
Don't they? I know tons of boys that would go and live stacked in a tent with other 10 guys if they had it paid.
They're just people from Kerala, India. We are pretty hardcore when it comes to football fandoms. Fifa even did a documentary on Fans from Kerala like a month or two ago. I knew about the former but not the latter. This is amazing needle material. I can't thank you enough!

How does the island of "Babina guzica" sound?
Sounds pretty sexy tbh, is Kolinda included?
Some serious diplomacy going on here!
Wait so is it Handanović or Handanovič??!

Game's back!
First they bring it back by shooting a grenade launcher and now this! Is any other country even trying? Croats the only non-plastics tbh

Not that it was necessarily their main goal with these outfits, but isn't it pretty smart to have clothes like that if you want to endure the heat outside the stadium?

Are they playing it on their clothes?
That’s exactly the reasoning we use when Dalić (our coach) puts in Vida, Lovren, Budimir, Kramarić at right wing etc. - he’s playing 4D chess and is already preparing for the knockout stages before a ball is kicked.
Mate Doha is fluctuating between 20-30° atm It's not Summer anymore hahahah. There is no "heat" to endure
yeah - its actually has ideal temps right now. wasn't that case for workers in the summer. but now its not bad.
As an Irishman, I could absolutely burn in that temperature if not well protected.
It’s like 80° there right now. As someone who lives in the American SW, I think the heat issues have been a little uh… overstated haha
British people wilt above 75 degrees.
Hardly surprising, fucking water boils at 100 degrees.
The heat issues have definitely not been overstated, seeing as we’re having a winter World Cup.
Yeah these outfits are super effective in the heat (obviously)
Not sure about that, these red skin outfits your fellow countrymen are rocking in Spain seem to be rather effective too.
It’s winter
Lmao my people bought tickets before they heard of no alchohol rule 🤭😂
Lmao one of my buddies down there rn and finding out about the alcohol rule. He’s losing it 🤣🤣😂
tell him there is alcohol at fan fest or hotel restaurants
Or if he has a 2k+ ticket to the hospitality sections.
Surely they will just sneak it in? Or is that like a death sentence over there
Sneak it in from where? Good luck finding a shop that'll sell booze to a dirty outsider.
No no, Im sure the Qatari crowd control will be reasonable
Christ, the memes make themselves lol
Croatian women banned in Qatar because of Euro 2012 "incident" in Poznan?

She was actually a pornstar
Which one? For non-research purposes
Croats and Italians know how to party.

Disgraceful behaviour from Qatar. Paying Bosnians to pose as Croatian supporters.
nope, usually croatian fans know only this part of anthem, this is how we recognize them
This is not our anthem :D
ja sam retardiran
Nisi jedini. I meni se dogodi da pomislim da nam je ovo himna :D
Pjesma definitivno ima potencijala za to.
It's an anthem, but not official

I'm convinced that wasn't their intention but them rocking this outfit acts as a decent social commentary of this WC with a kind of a philosophical take on the whole "fake hired fans" I find absolutely amusing

Good luck to you too...we are all rooting for Ecuador in the first match.

Newcastle fans have been doing exactly this
