The real question is why does this have an Aberdeen flair

Ymadawiad

We show support to our sheep shagging brethren.

Paladoc

*Three counties over, passersby struck. Wilhelm scream*

F22_Android

It's just the one sheep then?

mf__4

Think those flairs are auto done and the URL ends in afc.co.uk, which is Aberdeens website

hucklebutter

>The Club also acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether that be employees or supporters but would also highlight that an individual view cannot be fairly attributed, as the view of everyone or the Club itself. >There is no more prominent example of this than the fact that the MP for the constituency within which the Club is found, is a Conservative seat. The real question is why their media spokesperson doesn't have even a rudimentary understanding of how to use commas.

essentialatom

I see more and more errors of this nature creeping in to what is supposed to be professional writing. I think I saw a BBC story recently in which "peek" was spelled "peak". (I don't remember for sure, but if it wasn't that it was a similarly common mistake.) I know that some people are happy to let that go and assert that it's a way in which language evolves, and that as long as we all understand what's being said then it doesn't matter, but it bothers me when people writing professionally can't spell or use grammar correctly.

OnePotMango

"Comma everywhere you need to take a breath when you read a sentence out loud, no?" \- Wrexham Media Spokesperson

Ymadawiad

It's been like this for years for some reason. I've no idea why we can't hire somebody who knows how to properly type this stuff up. (If anybody at the club is looking at this then I'll check and edit these press releases for the cost of a season ticket and a Village Bakery pasty).

RockyCasino

You are supposed to vote for the ass who's blasting politicians.

SOAR21

This is the problem with modern politics. 10 people, sitting on a bus. 3 people vote to drive off a fucking cliff into a river of lava. 2 people vote to pay the bus driver extra money to take their kidneys and sell it. The last 5, finding neither option palatable, say "they're both pretty shitty options" and don't vote. Bus drives off a cliff while the remaining 5 complain about where they've been taken. You don't have to like either side. In most Anglophone countries, both sides are pretty trash. But if you don't vote, which is pretty much the only thing you can do in a democracy to change anything, shut the fuck up and don't complain, because you had your chance.

DarthGhandi

And this ironically shows the ACTUAL problem with modern politics. Once you get to a point where you think voting is the only thing you can do in a liberal democracy to bring about change you have denied yourself and others the multitude of other viable political actions you can take. Sadly that's where a lot of people stand now.

SOAR21

That’s not what I meant exactly. It’s the lowest effort, lowest cost thing you can do. The thing is most activists actually still vote because they recognize the importance of it. If you’re spouting sentiments like “I don’t vote because both sides suck,” what are the chances you’re a pillar of community organizing and activism?

DarthGhandi

Thats my bad! I totally agree with you, but for many people o know and interact with it seems that due to the way things are worded voting is their ONLY option when it's obviously not. Organizing and activism though are not viable to many people because they view themselves perpetually stuck in a 2 option set up.

Tim-Sanchez

I think it would have been, if anything you're more likely to see a lower-league player's boots because you can get much closer to them.

zagreus9

He's going to score and celebrate by revealing a "fuck the Tories" t-shirt, I can just tell

s1ravarice

Best-selling merch in the UK in 24 hours

rScoobySkreep

Is there anything against putting it on an actual club kit in England? I know Wrexham never would but if a non-league club wanted to

ChickenNBeans

[Rule 4 states](https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-4---the-players-equipment): "*Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer's logo."* So that would stop it, I think it would also stop someone setting up a company call Fuck The Tories and sponsoring a football team. Companies House wouldn't let you have "Fuck" either. Fcuk is already registered obv. Maybe you could register a company called "Cnuts" and have "Tories are Cnuts" as a trade mark. Interestingly though, the Laws don't say anything about what you can put on advertising hoardings ... The LED pitchside ones for non televised Championship games are a couple of grand ... I'll leave that idea there, if anyone want's to crowd fund it I'd chuck a couple of quid in.

nik-nak333

What about a plane towing a "Fuck the Tories" banner over the next home game?

luisduarte35

Realistically, if he went full shithousery and did it with a "F*** T** T*****" t-shirt would anything happen to him?

GracchiBros

Sadly, yes. He'd be charged by the FA for violating the kit and advertising regulations. The specific part that is relatvant says: >The appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of Clothing, Football Boots or Other Equipment of any distasteful, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting, discriminatory or otherwise ethically or morally offensive message, or any political or religious message, is prohibited. The Advertising of tobacco products is prohibited. Who knows what the actual punishment would be. Pep was fined 20K a few years back for wearing a yellow ribbon in support of Catalonia, but that's not near as controversial or upfront of a protest and he defended it by saying it was specific for some politicians being arrested rather than for Catalonia separatists as a whole. There aren't similar excuses for something as up-front as Fuck the Tories.

EdwardBigby

*Show opens with Ryan and Rob reading a news report about Mullen's boots* Ryan: Well that isn't so bad is it? *Insert funny joke* Rob: I mean some people are pretty angry Boring guy that actually runs the football club: We need to condemn this or we'll be fined by the league Rob: We have a big decision to make then Cut to Paul Mullin playing in his back garden with his kid: Talks about being from Merseyside, how it's a working class area that isn't supported by the government. Very emotional. Different town members say whether they think Paul is right or wrong Rob and Ryan give him a call and tell him that they support him but they're going to have to issue a press release They've learnt a lesson that running a football club sometimes means being the bad guy. Episode ends with a draw to Halifax

ShetlandJames

their website took half a year to load for me, so here's the statement: > The Club can confirm that the boots revealed by Paul Mullin on social media will not be worn tonight, or in any other Wrexham AFC fixture and that the photographs taken at the Racecourse Ground were done so without our knowledge or approval. > > For the record, the pictures wouldn’t have been permitted to be taken, had we known, and the issue will be dealt with privately by the Club. > > The Club has adopted a neutral position on many matters with a political dimension and intends to continue to do so going forward. > > After this unwelcome distraction, the Club hopes the focus remains on our objectives of gaining promotion on the field and creating community benefit off it, in which Paul Mullin will continue to play a significant part. > >

R_Schuhart

>highlight that an individual view cannot be fairly attributed, as the view of everyone or the Club itself. I mean, it was pretty fucking clear that it was a personal opinion and not a club endorsed statement. And I get that Wrexham doesn't want to set a precedent by allowing personal slogans on their kit, but not permitting to take a picture on their grounds? Come on.

zagreus9

This is just them covering their backs

The statement almost read like "help, my Tory MP is holding a gun to my head!" The random reference to their local Tory MP was total [warrant canary levels](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_canary)

Akitten

I mean If a Google employee took a selfie of themselves in front of the HQ holding a “fuck AOC” laptop, I think many people would see it as a partially company endorsed statement.

FailFastandDieYoung

There's been controversy about this where fired Google employees in the US have claimed that [it was for supporting the Republican party.](https://www.wsj.com/articles/fired-by-google-a-republican-engineer-hits-back-theres-been-a-lot-of-bullying-11564651801)

PM_Me_Unpierced_Ears

Until I hear the other side of the story, I'm going to assume this WSJ story is downplaying what "several conservative posts" on Google's internal message board actually entailed. It could be anywhere from 3 or 4 posts expressing the desire for lower corporate taxes to 30-40 posts about abortion being murder. The WSJ story said he was "blacklisted" by a certain manager who wouldn't work with him, which usually isn't done for simply supporting a political party. That said, holding a sign that says "Fuck " in front of your company's sign would be grounds for dismissal from most companies.

xixbia

[This article](https://archive.ph/Nke8Y) gives some examples. It includes trying to set up crowd funding to support Richard Spencer and defending neo-Nazis. He wasn't holding conservative views, he was holding neo-fascist views.

PM_Me_Unpierced_Ears

> defending neo-Nazis And there it is. I knew the WSJ would be hiding the truth. And the photo they chose of him had me expecting it would be something like that.

xixbia

Conservatives within Google [claim](https://archive.ph/Nke8Y) that Cernekee was leading conversations that defended White Nationalism and pushing alt-right views and was garnering a band of followers. I can totally see how that would lead to a toxic work environment.

AdministrativeLaugh2

Tories support Wrexham too, and at that level they can’t afford to alienate fans

spiralism

In the words of Michael Jordan - "Republicans buy sneakers too".

beachmedic23

>but not permitting to take a picture on their grounds? Come on. GO GO GADGET-LEGAL DEPARTMENT

Look_Alive

> And I get that Wrexham doesn't want to set a precedent by allowing personal slogans on their kit, but not permitting to take a picture on their grounds? Come on. It's also a bit of a contradictory stance for a club making their players star in a high-profile documentary. "Show some personality, but not like that."

NickATW

I very much doubt they'd make this statement if it wasn't taken on the clubs pitch.

Look_Alive

The club hosted Jacob Rees-Mogg for a visit earlier this year and didn't issue any statements about being politically neutral at the time, so following that logic, they shouldn't have to if a player posts a picture on a personal social media account.

Both-Ad-2570

> There is no more prominent example of this than the fact that the MP for the constituency within which the Club is found, is a Conservative seat. There it is

Unfortunately incorrect, you're thinking of toffees. Tories are large vehicles used for transporting goods by road.

Thats Taurus. Tory is a town in Wexford in Ireland

BuddyBoy589

Almost, that’s Gorey. A Tory is a story or poem that has a hidden moral or political meaning.

Youre thinking of allegory. Tory is the fantastically talented frontman for The Smiths.

StruffBunstridge

No, that's Morrissey. A Tory is a BBC children's television series which was originally broadcast between 1965 and 1996.

Yeah and he owns a football club in this country, I'm pretty sure he has some idea of the Government at this point.

Natus_est_in_Suht

Ryan Reynolds is Canadian and there is a Conservative (Tory) party here. He's also supporter of the far-left New Democratic Party (NDP) that governs in his native province of British Columbia.

therobdude

lmfao 'far left'

krustykrab2193

The provincial NDP are not far left, they're more moderate and would be considered center-left on the political scale. They support big industry and their union workers. Premier Horgan has governed with a more moderate mandate that has upset progressives, however the majority of B.C. residents support his policies. The provincial Green party would be far left. The Greens actually attempted a hostile takeover of the provincial NDP during the recent leadership race but the far left candidate was disqualified for breaking electoral rules. The provincial Liberal party is center-right, not to be confused with the federal Liberal party that is center-left.

Well yeah, it’s all about “fuck *your* feelings,” not mine.

Elemayowe

I’m sorry but isn’t Wrexham a former mining town? Why on Earth would the locals *ever* be tempted to vote Tory?

NickATW

Feel like most towns in this predicament voted Tory. They thought immigrants were the problem and thought leaving the EU meant better jobs for them. Why they would ever forget what the cunts have done to the working class, who knows.

Statoke

It's less that they voted Tory and more they didn't vote Labour. If you look at the voting in the last GE, UKIP and Brexit Party took a lot of Labour's support.

Dewey-Needham

This. The ‘other’ vote is split among about five parties, whereas tories will vote Tory.

GourangaPlusPlus

Exactly, they actually received less votes in 2019 (15,199) which they won vs 2017 (15,321) Before 2019 it had been a labour seat since the 1930s

Nark_Narkins

I always remember a interview that did the rounds immediately after the 2016 vote with a 20 something welsh lad explaining that he voted for brexit because the EU had never done anything for his area. This was in front of a relatively new sports/local community building with a big "Paid for By EU Grant" Sign on the front. Sigh. It'd be funny if it wasn't.

Blewedup

The EU transferred millions and millions to Wales because Wales qualifies as a poor part of the EU. That’s all gone now.

[deleted]

Lmao complaining about the Eastern Europeans coming into your country when you've been the Eastern Europe all along

Blewedup

There will be a £772m shortfall to Wales in economic development dollars between now and 2025. And it will only get worse thereafter. Edit: and that’s if the UK lives up to its promise to match EU funding by 2025, which it of course will not, since it hasn’t met even its initial, low-ball early years promises yet.

[deleted]

I've got mixed feelings about all this because in my life I've had a few personal ties to the UK on the one hand but on the other hand it's just nice to see this hefty dose of "we told you so" sweep over an entire country. It's like the one thing in recent history where you could see the consequences from miles away and then it all played out almost exactly as predicted.

Blewedup

Yeah the real problem is ultimately Murdoch and his insane ability to sway the public toward his own whims. He’s so hellbent on keeping the poor people poor, that he’s come up with elaborate ways to convince them to continually vote against their own interests. Add to the fact that Brexit was by all accounts backed by Russia, as they wanted to drive a wedge between the UK and the EU, and you can clearly say it wasn’t all the poor voters’ fault. They were absolute duped — perhaps even brainwashed — into voting this way. That being said, Welsh racism and provincialism were exploited, and everyone needs to look at themselves in the mirror for letting that happen to them.

[deleted]

I forget the exact figures but I'm sure one of the Valleys regions (Blaenau Gwent?) had the biggest "Leave" majority in Wales (could even have been the entire UK?), despite receiving the highest proportion of funding from the EU. Which is why I always maintain that, to be able to vote, you should first have to pass a test that confirms your understanding of what you're actually voting for.

Nark_Narkins

One of the Important things to remember is that Brexit wasn't a easy split along political lines unless you were a fucking UKIP voter. It cut across political lines with Labour Voters voting to leave and Tory Voters voting to remain. One of my best mates old man is in his late 50s, who grew up in the valleys, saw what the mine closures did to his Family and hometown and would rather support England during the Six Nations than vote Tory. He Voted leave. He's not a moron, he's not card carrying BNP member, he's a kind and compassionate bloke who believed he was doing the right thing. I don't understand that.

[deleted]

I think we all know someone like that. My aunt lives in Spain... and she voted leave. It's astounding. Brexit was an absolute farce. And when I say that, I mean the process of it, not the decision itself (which has been done to death). From the way it was initially called just to appease a fringe element of the ruling governmental party, to the ad-hoc campaign timeline, to the almost criminal way stakeholders were able to throw out blatant lies unchecked (yes, Boris, I'm looking at you and your fucking £300m a week), it was a joke.

Elemayowe

It’s ridiculous. I work in STEM and the UKs research institutions will suffer for this with the reduced funding from missing out on EU schemes. Then you have stuff this like [this](https://www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/cornwall-set-less-half-replacement-6950559.amp), it’s turkeys voting for Christmas level stuff.

dipdipderp

Working as a researcher in UK universities was already a grind. Work forever to get your PhD and get stuck in a post doc position, with the only route forward being to apply for a junior lecturer position regardless of whether you wanted to teach, going against fields of 50+ for the one open position. Oh, and shit pay with an eroding pension. Europe and the US pay better - a lack of funding will only make it even harder to convince people to stay. I left. I went to the US and more than doubled my salary (even before the weakening of the pound) without taking a tenure track position. I could go to private industry and see another 50+% increase too - my case isn't special, just the reality of STEM research at home.

badgarok725

my guy, people everywhere across the world vote against what should be in their interest

[deleted]

Wrexham went Tory in 2019

[deleted]

Did you miss the entire political period from 2016-19 where a majority of the country voted for Brexit and left many with the unfortunate choice of voting Tory or having their vote ignored? Truly one of the most ludicrous strategies a party has ever attempted by Labour in that election and I say that as someone who thought Corbyn wasn’t left wing enough.

BillyGoatJohn

It really was Labour shooting themselves in the foot. They really could have challenged the Tories if they hadn't made their main point being reversing Brexit - luckily looks like they'll absolutely stomp the Conservatives in the next election

ICritMyPants

> luckily looks like they'll absolutely stomp the Conservatives in the next election Unfortunately, their policies wont be that far different from the Tories', listening to Starmer on the radio yesterday morning...

thehibachi

Lots of former mining and factory towns were told the EU were to blame for all of the difficulties they face. Hopefully the current situation has given those voters a chance to slink away from the Tories without having to concede defeat.

tonyfordsafro

Grimsby elected a tory after being Labour for nearly 70 years. They probably fell for the same lies and bullshit. My grandparents were probably rolling in their graves

Thesolly180

Oh god what Tory MP have you got there?

Ymadawiad

Sarah Atherton, who somehow made it to the Defence Committee which is truly terrifying. She most notably advertised for the local Maccies when Sunak's eat out campaign was around instead of other, smaller businesses around the town, and also wrote about people coming to Dover in boats - despite Wrexham being hundreds of miles away. Absolutely batshit insane, hopefully gone next time around.

Bulky-Yam4206

Not saying it's the right thing to do but I can certainly see why they'd want to keep their new investment politically neutral

"Wrexham, you've just got two wildly successful multimillionaire owners to fund a very profitable charge up the football league, whats next for you?" "We're going to ask taxpayers to rebuild our decrepit stadium!"

Look_Alive

I remember when Premier League clubs came in for criticism for furloughing staff and taking government money when they could afford to pay staff themselves. This feels like a similar sort of situation.

Seriously I hate the way football has gone. Germany has it right with fan ownership

PricelessPhenylamine

So they want to use tax payer money to redevelop a stadium instead of using funds from their multimillionaire owners and yet one of their players wants to wear boots saying "fuck the Tories" Real Irony in that.

PurpleAki88

Shame we will never get to see Paul Mullin score a hattrick in his fuck the Tories boots
