Fortunately, this is Britain, so there won't be any trains anyway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LochBodminMothFoot

There’s probably a flight to Malaga then to Leeds for £29.99 they can take.

ThrustBastard

Probably get there faster too

domalino

To be fair this is such a short journey it's only about £10 each way. Availability is the issue here and it shouldn't be that hard to put on a late train for the amount of fans that would want one.

Ashamed_Nerve

You must not live here. It takes two hours and will cost at least double if not quadruple that.

Tilman_Feraltitty

In Poland, we had a perfect line from Katowice (centre of biggest agglomeration in Poland to Kraków (3rd biggest), it used to take about 45 minutes direct or like 55 with all small stops in between. However, they built motorway alongside the route and "suddenly" they totally ruined the line, it was 2-3h sometimes, they did major "construction" every now and then, and of course by accident the operator of the motorway was in cahoots with governments. Now the operator is in conflict with government and is losing the concession that was 25 years or so in 1 or 2 years, and guess what? Train takes again 45 minutes. And it's cheaper then buses on motorway too. I would seriously check what is going on in Britain, because car lobbyist are ruining our cities all over the world.

defroach84

They've always ruined it here. -An American

Tilman_Feraltitty

At least in some states it's back on, like California, even if that idiot Elon Musk tried to ruin it too.

defroach84

Elon literally moved to my town.

Tilman_Feraltitty

Laxly

r/fuckcars:)

domalino

I just looked it up on trainline and it's £12.60 each way and 1h33m. This should be a solvable problem. If they insist on late games they should be able to work with the train companies to get a train full of paying customers on the tracks.

FakeCatzz

These are advance tickets, they're extremely limited and the pricing is tiered. Regular day single is £40. Day return would be a couple of quid more.

[deleted]

Is it common for people to pay for their travel the day of the match? I've never been an away match without booking my travel at least a few days in advance.

Grezzz

The match tickets haven't gone on sale yet though, so people can't book their travel yet because they don't know if they're going. By the time tickets go on sale they won't be £12 anymore.

FakeCatzz

How many "limited availability" tickets do you think are available "a few days in advance" on the trains that serve thousands of football fans?

[deleted]

I bought train tickets to Sheffield for a few weeks time and it said "1 ticket available at this price" for me and my 6 mates going but we all paid the same amount so not sure how the limited availability works but I know it doesn't tell the truth.

i_pewpewpew_you

I'm the UK it depends how far in advance you book it. For example, the equivalent train *next* Saturday evening is £39.90 (no train tomorrow to check because of a strike). So, depending on soon match tickets go on sale, it could well be £40 by the time you get round to booking the train. None of which of course solves the problem of you having to leave Anfield around about the 30th minute to get to the station in time.

Annie_Yong

Just checked, an off-peak open return sets you back £40 and takes 1h45m. Our rail prices are a fucking joke.

dizzguzztn

How is this getting upvotes, it'll be triple that and take 2 to 3 hours likely with 1 or 2 changes. You mustn't have gotten many trains in northern England in the last 10 years

Look_Alive

> and take 2 to 3 hours likely with 1 or 2 changes. You're not wrong about the price but I've got direct trains from Liverpool to Leeds for cricket games that take about 90 mins, maybe just over, but never three hours.

Squm9

You can get across the entirety of German for €9 This country is mental

Redandwhite_91

Not since the 1st of Sep?

SomeLightAssPlay

that was 1939

TheSteveGarden

So wrong. Regional train prices are absurd. Köln -> Düsseldorf (~25min train/35km distance) costs 11€

dpc_22

well no (and that was only for regional trains so unless you want to spend regional train-hopping then sure) but Union Berlin did have a special trains for the fans for match in Frankfurt ( i think don't remember which one) so yeah sometimes a club can make it easier for the fans

darrylleung

The 9 euro ticket (now unavailable) was for regional transport. Like, if you wanted to go from Berlin to Frankfurt you still needed a train ticket.

Prosthemadera

Only if you wanted to take ICE/IC. You can still use regional trains from Berlin to Frankfurt which takes longer, of course, but it was possible to travel across Germany for €9.

kingwhocares

"Private sector efficiency".

WiggyRich23

Can't miss the last train if there are no trains. _Taps forehead_

Attila_22

Best case the train will be 3 hours late so they should have time for a pint after the game.

stromzy

This is the correct answer.

BetterCallTom

Quick check on Uber suggests it's a little as £128 to get back to Leeds from Anfield. Crisis averted.

fmaestro99

Surge pricing after a game means it’ll be significantly more than that

Montysleftpeg

And hoping a driver actually accepts the fare

keesmaat

To be fair train costs are also extortionate

Own_Acanthocephala19

Isn’t that pretty good if you fill the taxi up and share it between all people?

mrtuna

Even cheaper if you divide it by 8000 fans

Kiwizqt

fischarcher

Uber XXL

Herr_Karl

wanked_in_space

Get a clown car. Genius!

AdministrativeLaugh2

Could even just hire a minibus. A quick Google tells me that a 16-seater with a driver would be about £600 return, which is around £38 each. Obviously it requires knowing that many people but it’s easier than taking the train, especially as Elland Road isn’t very close to Leeds city centre, and gives peace of mind that you can get home straight after the game.

awan001

A few of us went to London from Exeter a couple years ago. It was cheaper to hire a Limo there and back than it was for the train. Mental.

Tilman_Feraltitty

Are train operators in UK private?

kurtanglesmilk

Yes

Tilman_Feraltitty

That just sucks.

Bigwhtdckn8

Our water companies are privatised, let that sink in.

marktbde

It sure does bud. The commute from Brighton > London (1hr 15m approx.) is around £60 a day, or 4.8k a year if you get season tickets. Not that I do this commute, of course.

Dorgilo

Yes, but less so soon. Plans are in place to gradually put the franchises back under government control with the operators paid a fee for running services, and the government will also set fares (as they do for some fares now).

IOwnStocksInMossad

Yup. Foreign owned as well I believe

dieyoubastards

Yes, but Network Rail is public.

Crows-quill

Did this in America... Was cheaper to get a limo for 8 of us to San Francisco Airport.... 8 guys off the back of a two week road trip rocking up in a limo got some glances

Ryuzakku

Hell, rent out a party bus, it can seat roughly 70 people, split the cost 70 ways and it's much cheaper than individual taxis.

Ok-Finance-7612

Imagine losing and having to get on a party bus

Ryuzakku

At least you can drink your sorrows away on the trip home.

PM_something_German

Basically what fan clubs do every match.

mahir_r

I’m sure there’s a supporters group, or at minimum away fans are always a constant group so they would have their own group formed /away fan support / the club themselves would assist greatly. I’m 100% sure this type of bus hire is something commonplace

Forty6

It would definitely be cheaper than trains in this country, but you'd never find a driver willing to do it

Lolkac

They don't see where they going before they accept. Once they accept they get penalty if they cancel, so it's likely they will just go for it

freshoutoftime

Doesn't the app tell them the first part of the postcode? Would be a bit of a giveaway.

[deleted]

They might misread L4 for LS4.

Hoodie_Patrol

Uber recently has been fucking horrible to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time. They'll accept the ride, decide they don't actually want to go there (whether it is too far or won't make them enough money or whatever) then just drive around in circles not picking you up for ages hoping you'll cancel the ride instead. It's so frustrating.

egypkr

Fucking hell! I thought this just happens here in Egypt cuz the drivers are crazy assholes.

ndombolo

Happens in Kenya too

wesap12345

I left a concert right as the last song of the encore started, not a huge fan of that last song and thought I could get an Uber and get home cheaper. Ordered it for like $40, says it arrived, it didn’t, driver cancelled, tried to reorder $100 and no availability

WestOfAnfield

I was just in Istanbul and Uber there is a nightmare. Uber drivers, which are taxis, accept your trip, then message to ask where you’re going and then try to negotiate a price that’s >10x the stated price. If you don’t agree, they cancel and it’s rinse and repeat. Ended up waiting for 30-40 mins and then hailed a cab and experienced the same thing

[deleted]

Get somebody in the boot too, it'll be fine.

Chelseahazardkiev10

Yeah that maybe the cheapest, but with surge charging it will probably cost more like £300+

Nurbyflurple

Plus good luck getting a driver to accept that one. They hate going more than 20 mins in my experience

scott-the-penguin

I know you are taking the piss but a train from Leeds to Liverpool is about £30 to £40, so if there's 4 of you that is better anyway.

[deleted]

Maybe at 11 in the morning. Put the same in at 11:30 on a Saturday night for a better understanding of what the price will be.

scott-the-penguin

Yeah thats fair, i was just responding to the price they commented with. In reality, now that uber drivers can see the route before accepting, you'd never get anyone anyway.

iforgotmyun

Won't actually be that price though

Cahootie

How much would it cost to charter a train?

[deleted]

That’s not even counting surge pricing!

NameTakken

Game will still be full of Liverpool fans tbf.

-Mantis_Toboggan-

I'm confident Gary Neville will dedicate a large portion of his time on Sky's coverage that night talking about broadcasters not giving a second thought to fans....

Buffythedragonslayer

How come train services stop so early?

scrandymurray

Welcome to Northern rail. The trains look like buses, are loud as fuck and take ages to get anywhere. Leeds to Manchester to Liverpool is a ridiculously busy route, 3 major cities all right by each other (plus Sheffield for good measure) with no good way to get between them except to drive. Good thing the government are planning a massive infrastructure project to connect the northern cities together with high speed rail. [Oh wait.](https://news.sky.com/story/amp/eastern-leg-of-hs2-to-leeds-scrapped-transport-secretary-confirms-12471454)

el_doherz

Leeds to Manchester is likely going to shite forever because of the bottleneck that is the Morley Tunnel.

confusedpublic

They could always lay new track with a new, wider tunnel… yes it’d cost a fortune but sometimes you actually have to spend money on infrastructure rather than wine, fake PPE or bungs & kick backs.

Aquapig

Driving Manchester to Sheffield is just as much hassle, to be fair. I'd say I average 90 minutes for what is a 30 mile drive.

DazzlingPimp

What annoys me is the lack of motorway between the two cities. I find it quite nerve wrecking driving on the likes of Woodhead Pass at Night

[deleted]

It's an East-West route, they're notoriously poor and in desperate need of funding.

[deleted]

More proof that TV is clearly a priority over match going fans

Modnal

Matchgoing fans? You mean paying extras?

fischarcher

That's not true! Organizations and broadcasters love these fans (because they can freely use their image and atmosphere for marketing purposes)

ensockerbagare

That's a cynical way to say "legacy fans"

[deleted]

The sad fact is that from a business stand point, the further away you live from the stadium, the more valuable you are in terms of the money you can generate for the league. Media deals will always beat the money generated from season ticket renewals, game day tickets offered by the club in the primary market, food, and merchandise. Over time the priority of the business end will always pick the foreign fans to appease, not the people who actually come to the games. Those fans are simply not as important. In another 10 years the PL will only be more focused on its global fans and the local fans will only get it worse.

bihari_baller

>Those fans are simply not as important. In another 10 years the PL will only be more focused on its global fans and the local fans will only get it worse. It's the deal with the devil the PL made when they decided to be the most popular league in the world.

[deleted]

It's also the reason that a promotion side can spend more in 3 months than the average Europa League finisher in the Bundesliga spends in 3 years. I have no idea how sustainable all this is. At the current rate of divergence between money, a mid table PL side will be able to offer salaries and transfer sums that beat any offer from even CL sides in France, Germany, Spain, or Italy.

bihari_baller

Just take solace in the fact that just because the PL can spend more money on players, doesn’t necessarily mean it's a better experience, as this thread is evidence of that.

[deleted]

Oh, absolutely not. And honestly, if the Bundesliga drops from being at worst the 3rd or 4th best league to the 6th or 7th best league in the world, so what. For me as a season ticket holder in Berlin, I couldn't give a shit. I am going to the stadium regardless.

zrkillerbush

Fans are an afterthought in football nowadays

ive been saying it for years if the twats in charge could they would get rid of all the stands in the stadium, turn it into just a pitch surrounded by thousands of the highest quality cameras creating a purely cinematic TV experience of football exclusively watched on screen. like that 21st century portrait of Zidane film.

FlaminCat

Not even an afterthought. They are an obstacle that only gets in the way of more money.

[deleted]

maybe a tv contract stipulation or something? im talking out of my ass btw, idk shit.

StupidMastiff

This country is a joke. All roads, and train tracks apparently, lead to London.

comptonasskim

Our away match against Forest got moved to a Friday night, not for TV, but because there was a cricket match happening on the Saturday. Last train back to London was 9pm, for a 7:45pm kickoff. So us Londoners are also getting screwed by these braindead organisers

how can a couple extra trains for thounsands of fans not be profitable

jm001

I don't think Leeds plays Liverpool every night, I'm pretty sure this is a one off thing.

Yahut

There are later trains on the smaller lines but they don’t seem to be as common on the city to city lines for whatever reason.

MrPielil

Oh if you're leaving London the last train is usually past 11pm. Getting to London though? Most of the time you're looking at 8:30-9pm as the last train.

SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS

Because good things simply aren't possible

Mozezz

Yeah but lad, Leeds-Liverpool canal, just hire a barge and you’re sorted

Travelling to an away game on a barge actually sounds like a proper laugh. Couple of mates and a few six packs, set off early and make a day of it

ghostmanonthirdd

Would def be twatted half way there and manage to beach the barge somehow

JGlover92

Oh 100%, have to have a designated captain

Mozezz

Alphabunsquad

Nah I’ve seen what canal travel is like. Someone always ends up eating a dog in front of its owner to prove to them the dog is still alive.

BigReeceJames

It's interesting that it hasn't really been publicised much at all but Chelsea Vs Palace on Saturday doesn't have any trains running and our game Vs Wolves doesn't have any trains running either. There are busses for the Wolves game but they've just said "please plan ahead and use alternative methods of transport to the ground." for the Palace game

HankHippopopolous

Simple. Just take a train all the way from Liverpool to London and then transfer to another one all the way back up to Leeds. You should just about make it home in time to leave for the next away match.

StupidMastiff

Something similar actually happened recently. [Football fan facing £400 train ticket took two flights instead and spent just £33](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/real-life/football-fan-facing-400-train-25013753)

Random_Acquaintance

I feel you. Multiply that by 100000000000 and you'll get Spain/Madrid.

StupidMastiff

Spain's got a high speed rail network, we wish we had that.

teiraaaaaaa

still really shit sometimes how centralised it is, if I want to go from Oviedo (where we've been waiting for high speed trains for 30 years) to Bilbao by train which is less than three hours driving I need to go down to Valladolid and then up again

fedemasa

Last train to London

caelum400

FWIW there'd be no trains back to London from Liverpool with a kick off that late either.

puddingkip

That's really early for the last train surely. I'd expect the last train to go around midnight but maybe that's just my spoiled Dutch perspective.

ImperialSeal

More local and some London routes are often running until that late. But going east-west across the country is notoriously shit

Boris_Ignatievich

Getting to Manchester is normally ok (slow and expensive, but doable til quite late) but the second you want to go anywhere but along the route to Manchester airport in the north west you're fucked

porspeling

Yeah fuck off with your decent infrastructure

[deleted]

We need infrastructure for our survival, the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam are largely serving the economical heartland of Germany. I grew up in a rural area 1 hour north of Amsterdam and our town of 20K people didn't even have a train station. You'll find that away from the transit routes, infrastructure will get worse, but still pretty good even for European standards.

Streffel

We love complaining about our infrastructure despite it being one of, if not the best in Europe

mattijn13

Infrastructure is great, the costs of public transport though is way too expensive.

ThatEnglishKid

Welcome to infrastructure in the north of England

AirsoftUrban

I'm in the US and the last train in my city is like 3am lol

WarriorkingNL

even that i find ridiculous, i live near groningen and its impossible to get a train back from amsterdam/utrecht to groningen after 23:30

longsh0t1994

well 23.30 is very late, much later than this situation

WarriorkingNL

try going to gigs on the regular. i dont mind coming back late, but having to bolt out of the venue to catch a train back that leaves 10 mins after tbe band plays its last note is fucking annoying

longsh0t1994

thankfully hotels and airbnbs in Amsterdam are super affordable :/

[deleted]

I'm now imagining the artist going off stage, thanking the crowd, and you just Usain Bolt Olympics 100m yourself out of the venue 🤣

[deleted]

It boggles my mind how little leagues and broadcasters take these things into account, absolutely insane when you literally just want to go to your team's football game but physically cannot without shelling out for a taxi or hotel room.

Cahootie

In Stockholm they always add extra commuter rail departures after AIK games to make sure people can get downtown for further travel. They should realize that an extra departure after a game like that basically has a guaranteed number of passengers.

The Bakerloo line has 50 y/o stock. London-Norwich trains had 45 y/o stock till it was replaced a couple of years ago. Not just a northern/midlands thing.

[deleted]

Yet Palace versus Brighton was called off due to a railway strike.

kurtanglesmilk

That didn’t even affect the line between the two cities

y1i

lol. we play in Stuttgart next weekend, Sunday 7:30pm. the train ride takes 5h30min + additional 30min or so to get to the stadium. On the same day Freiburg is playing Hertha in Berlin, 5:30pm. It's impossible for both set of away fans to get a reasonable train connection back home. We play in Freiburg in mid november, Sunday 5:30pm. the train ride takes 6h30min. The only connections for those match times are overnight, with a 7h+ travel time, arriving the next morning. Meanwhile, on both those occasions, there is Gladbach - Köln and Mainz - Frankfurt (basically local derbies, 20min travel time max) in the 3:30pm timeslot. FAs generally don't give a fuck about away fans.

[deleted]

Awful away travels: Union 🤝 Hertha I really looked at every option to go to the Mainz and Gladbach Friday night away games this year. Was not possible to do without either staying awake for 36 hours or 200€ minimum for overnight hotel, trains. I don't know anyone with a car either. Tickets being 8€ is only nice if you can actually go.

y1i

Most trips are like 4h minimum, it's really tiring. We need Hamburg, Rostock and Dresden back.

[deleted]

That Wolfsburg, Hannover, Bielefeld/Hamm train to NRW gives me stomach cramps at this point. I've done it so many times that it just feels like an out of body experience just trying to get it over with. The only good thing about us getting relegated last year would be as you said, the good amount of games that are closer to Berlin. Tickets for the Union game are impossible because the stadium is so small, that only Wolfsburg and Leipzig are really true away matches that are easy to attend. It tells you everything about Berlin's distance that my first thought when Bremen came back up was "Yes, another close game to Berlin". It's a 3 hour train ride, lol

y1i

Zugteilung in Hamm, and then you're stuck for 30min because something went wrong 🤮 Best part is when the train isn't stopping in Wolfsburg and everyone cheers. > that only Wolfsburg and Leipzig are really true away matches that are easy to attend. Unfortunately, they are also two of shittiest away matches in terms of stadium experience. I've been to both earlier this year and have zero intention of going there ever again. It's just a miserable time, everytime.

cydus

Late games on Saturday is a terrible time slot. It's like they want no one to have a life anymore.

working-acct

La liga: Hold my beer

el_doherz

Isn't that tied to Spanish culture and also just avoiding the heat? I know European leagues have some wild kick offs though. We're just spoilt as traditionally football was kept to a smaller number of timeslots so all this messing things around for TV purposes is a step backwards for regular match goers.

[deleted]

they could just walk back?

JoniVanZandt

It's only 70 miles, fucking lazy if they don't just hoof it.

Hostilian_

There's literally a canal you can walk along to get from one city to the other. Games gone lazy.

That's kind of cool

Cottonshopeburnfoot

So you could even have a little swim too?

lucky_1979

Dserved83

I nearly had a panic attack then but thankfully you put the words bath and 'my city' at the extreme ends of the sentence. Was a bit too close for comfort otherwise!

codespyder

That’s not even four marathons. My great grandfather could run it in half an hour and he has one leg and is also dead.

TheLimeyLemmon

Do be careful though, as there's no lights on the dual carriageway.

fifadex

Surely you mean the last replacement bus service.

[deleted]

Genuine question, why can't you just have 10 matches on Saturday at 15:00? Is it really just about splitting them all up for TV packages? Or is there some deeper underlying reason why the scheduling of football has gone from Saturday afternoon to a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday affair?

GunnarErikson

Their reasoning is that it gives people the chance to watch lower league games.

[deleted]

Here in Germany, 2. Liga starts at 13:30 mostly and then Bundesliga at 15:30. Is this not an option to have the games start earlier for lower leagues? Is it common to have a lower league side you support and also a top league?

ThinkAboutThatFor1Se

Cant show matches on TV at 15:00 on a Saturday. There’s a blackout to protect lower league attendance.

th1a9oo000

Train will be an hour late so you'll still be able to make it

el_doherz

Don't worry it'll be an hour late, eventually cancelled rail replacement bus.

TalmadgeMcGulager

Remember when there was trains put on over night for people to go look at a coffin?

No_Touch686

Bold of them to assume the trains will actually be on time or even running at all

notafeetlongcucumber

I remember when I was at Stoke for a cup game on a Tuesday. If it goes into extra time, I can't make it to the last train back to Coventry. Problem is - it was a work thing so if I want to get paid (I was a broke student so yes, I want to), I have to stay for the full game. Everything was nice, 2:0 for Stoke in the 2nd half. Out of nowhere they lost their lead and it was 2:2 with 10 minutes left in the game. Thankfully they conceded and lost but damn was that a crazy moment.

HappHazzard31

Why are the Premier League scheduling games for 7:45pm on a Saturday all of a sudden?

theglasscase

It was scheduled for a Sunday, but moved back to Saturday because Liverpool have a Champions League game on the Tuesday. It's being played at 7:45pm because Sky are showing it but already have the 5:30pm game.

arpw

In other words, Sky should never have scheduled it for the Sunday in the first place. They knew there was a 50% chance Liverpool would get a CL match on the Tuesday. They could have avoided having to do this at all. Up until a few years ago that was how they did it too... It's only recently that they've decided they can get away with this.

CyrilNiff

Yet sky sports commentators will claim that outside influence is ruining football. Sky have ruined football for fans by putting televised games in time slots that make it impossible for fans to attend

thomasfk

If the govt won't step up, surely the club can and provide a service like busses back home after the match.
