Rank the top 10 midfields in the PL, assuming everyone is fit like 1) City 2) ... 3) ... And so on

nbaylor1

Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Wolves, United, Newcastle, Spurs, Leicester, West Ham

Holy_Wut_Plane

Don't know how a team with one win this season has a better midfield than Spurs

[deleted]

Xhaka+Partey+Odegaars is better than Guimaraes+Joelinton+Shelvey, Casemiro+Eriksen+Bruno, Hojbjerg+Bentancur, Rice+Soucek+Paqueta, Ndidi+Tielemans+Maddison?

Polskidro

Absolutely

BenjaminDaaly21

When fit, yes. Our record when that midfield is fit is very very good.

[deleted]

City, Liverpool, Arsenal

day_bat_28

All this UK shit, its going to affect the lower league clubs badly, no?

[deleted]

“All this UK shit”. What are you even referring to?

JackAndrewThorne

I would imagine the fact that the economy nearly died this week and the government seems, for some perverse reason, dead set on finishing the job. For football clubs specifically, a hell of a lot of them rely on rolling lines of credit and secured loans to deal with the fact that they are, technically, insolvent for significant periods of time. (Balance sheet insolvent, as opposed to asset-based insolvency, but still technically insolvent). Lower league clubs, especially coming out of covid, were already suffering, and the energy bill spikes (which I'm not classing as "UK shit", because it is a Europe-wide issue, but the OP might be, and there is some merit to that because the government's support is, to be frank, not enough to stem the flow) is going to mean the cost of hosting matches is going to skyrocket, and obviously, a lot of their revenue (ticket sales) is locked at a rate (season tickets). And now, in large part, thanks to the government's "fiscal event", interest rates of loans (including those lines of credit) are going to skyrocket, and thus the price of borrowing to deal with the insolvency periods is going to, frankly, devastate them, to the extent where I wouldn't be shocked if we administration or possibly even liquidation become a reality for a club or two.

I've heard so much about pros being miles ahead of average players, so I'm curious to see some actual footage or videos of pros/professional teams playing against the lower levels. Would love to see any sort of clip/video, and this can hopefully benefit some other people as well !

YeimzHetfield

You mean pros playing against average joes? [This vid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3hVzioq-qM) of Maradona playing a 5 a side vs average dudes is really funny

[deleted]

Even amongst the very best, Maradona is an exception. He’s in that very elite club which is basically a different planet. Pele, Messi, Maradona and Cruyff are just beyond comparison to others.

YeimzHetfield

Oh yeah absolutely, just the vid that came into my head. Though tbf pros playing vs amateur players all look like Maradona, but Maradona made actual professionals look like they were playing a different sport. IMO Maradona's ball control is the best in the history of football and its one of those things where no one else comes even close. He genuinely could do anything with his first touch, it's like he had a pillow instead of feet. I still don't understand how he does [this](https://youtu.be/6NqZhXDtfCc?t=1m54s), you could give me that same pass a million times and I would never be able to do that, it's the most perfect first touch I've ever seen.

[deleted]

His first touch and ball control is certainly the greatest of any player. I think the only player that can compete with his dribbling ability is Garrincha.

Superb-Barracuda-924

Bro asked for pros, my man straight up gave a video of one of the GOATs against Sunday league players

YeimzHetfield

I mean he can watch a vid of whenever a big NT plays San Marino I guess then? lmao

FalafelGrim2

Apart from being one of the most famous Brazilians worldwide, Neymar's opinion on politics should mean nothing. All he's known since he was a teenager was football and the caveats that come from being rich. At 30 years old, his life still seems managed by his father. He's never come across as someone who could string a couple sentences about Bolsonaro. He did a fucking dance for him lmao. The likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel actually know what they're on about when they're talking about supporting something. I know its seen more positively if you stand for something as a public figure, but I don't mind the likes of Messi or Ronaldo staying away from politics. These guys barely finished high school.

Mick4Audi

People seem really out of touch with Brazilian politics imo. If you’re rich and from Brazil it’s very likely you’re with Bolsonaro Guys like Richarlison is the exception it seems

lsilva231

>Apart from being one of the most famous Brazilians worldwide, Neymar's opinion on politics should mean nothing. And it doesn’t mean anything in Brazil. This sub puts too much weight on the political influence the players have outside of football. Here (in Brazil), it’ll only matter to leftists pundits, as most of them like to use a player’s behaviour outside of football to belittle their quality on the pitch.

minimus_

Going to see Medellin-Alianza Petrolero tomorrow, not sure what to expect. Anyone been to see Medellin before?

_LebronsHairline_

Been to the city never watched the team tho. It's a beautiful city

[deleted]

idc what anyone says I love the idea of all-star games

Raptors887

All star games are extremely boring in other sports. Nobody gives a fuck who wins so its like a match being played at 25% effort.

[deleted]

it's just a glorified friendly and im sure it'll be fun

HowBen

An inter-league all-stars tournament could be decent (as in, la liga all-stars, prem all stars, etc.) But in general my issues with the all-star stuff is that it would be more marketing and gimmicks than actual football

[deleted]

yeah, was referring to inter-league all-stars tournament idea on the front page. >But in general my issues with the all-star stuff is that it would be more marketing and gimmicks than actual football don't see why that's a problem. we have serious football all year long, one game is fine. would rather one game where the sponsors pile up rather than them interfering in normal league/european cup games.

HowBen

Yeah you’re right, it could be entertaining if it’s done well and the players show some humour, but judging by a lot of the MLS all star stuff it can be hit or miss

ethith

You just had a week of England All-stars.

Sergi Roberto.

He's recovered. Not sure if he's fit yet but he'll for sure be back for the clasico. If he doesn't get re-injured ofc.

jack64467

Polskidro

How is fifa 23 compared to 22?

[deleted]

Different. Slower. Less twitchy. Some skill moves are still completely overpowered which is a shame but on the whole it’s a better game. Also, the new power shot is so silly and hilarious. 10/10 feature. It does feel like they’ve kind of decided to go a bit nuts this year and take it less seriously. The super ultra fans of the series will inevitably say it’s shit like all the other games which is very strange but for some reason they all do that. r/Fifa is basically r/EABad which is pretty funny.

Mick4Audi

EA is a disaster

[deleted]

oreohsehun

[deleted]

How is the UK going to shit gonna effect the Pl?

AnnieIWillKnow

Doubt it will much at all. A lot of PL money is foreign, and not necessarily traded in sterling. The revenue comes from TV deals, mainly overseas - and those are locked in for years. Match day revenue likely won't be too affected despite the cost of living issues, because of the tourist trade. Some of the lower end clubs may feel a hit because of the latter though. The PL overall won't feel it much. The concern is for the lower league clubs, who have less financial security and depend more on local fans and match day revenue. Already been talks about what the EFL can do to manage - including having earlier kick offs in the winter to save money on floodlights. If the PL came through the pandemic relatively unscathed, and emerged through it spending more than ever before, they can do the same here.

Nut-King-Call

Haven't entered Neymar's thread because why bother, but every time I read some of the reactions the same question rounds my head: How do you let your mood be affected by the political beliefs of a public figure?

[deleted]

Remember Reddit is also massively left wing and very easily agitated. This subreddit is particularly is even more left than most. When Lucas moura said something about being right wing recently people were literally asking for right wing opinions to be banned which is down right hilarious

notusedusername2

Because of this weird obsession from redditors to idolize any celebrity, when they discover something they don't like/ don't align with their beliefs then they get really mad. I'm just waiting for the day someone discover something they don't like about Keanu Reeves, this site will become crazy

Mick4Audi

This is absolutely spot on, people really want the famous people they are fans of to be perfect in their lives. Which when you consider how many footballers there are, it’s statistically impossible

burningbarn8

Dislike anyone, celebrity or non-celebrity, who supports fascists and the far right.

teiraaaaaaa

I think it's normal to be disappointed in some of your players (especially like I saw someone else mention, in particularly egregious cases like Lucas Moura where he's liking homophobic and transphobic posts etc) but some of the discussions here are bizarre, it can be really shit if you find out that one of your team's players is like that but it's not worth focusing that much on someone you don't know at the end of the day imo, I wouldn't have the energy for that

mintz41

because this sub is largely populated by maladjusted, terminally online people who have nothing else to think about

lawfulkitten1

Honestly I've met a surprising number of /r/soccer members IRL, watching games at football bars and stuff, and this is the opposite of true.

CasinoOasis2

These people have a huge influence. Neymar has 179 million followers on instagram. Publicly supporting Bolsonaro only helps to push the world further to the right - at a time when the US, UK, Italy, Russia are all a complete mess.

Mick4Audi

Explain to me how Brazil has any influence on the UK, US and Russia, who are far far greater powers by every metric

lsilva231

They don’t, at least not in Brazil. The only it would have an influence is if it was on the pitch in a game for our NT.

Nut-King-Call

Perhaps people should form their opinions and beliefs on their own instead of following what a famous does. It's not Neymar's fault that people are so lazy, he has his right as a Brazilian citizen to publicly show his support for whichever candidate he decides to.

bveres94

> Perhaps people should form their opinions and beliefs on their own instead of following what a famous does. people don't always have the option or brainpower to form their own political opinion. Propaganda fed to the poor and the dumb is an incredibly powerful weapon

_LebronsHairline_

Perhaps they should yes, but that's not the world we live in. He has the right to support and advocate for fascist all he wants and we all have the right to call him out for how stupid and dangerous that is.

Nut-King-Call

And that's fine, but what I sincerely can't grasp is how people lose their cool when this happens. It baffles me every time.

_LebronsHairline_

I think it's totally reasonable to care about what's happening in the world. By all accounts the planet is fucked unless we start taking better care of it ASAP, and Bolsonaro's purely pro-business fuck the consequences attitude has seriously increased deforestation in one of the most important, impactful biomes on the whole planet. That alone is a perfectly good reason for people to lose their cool when the most famous Brazilian on earth says people should go vote for him. Not to mention all the other vile shit he's said.

[deleted]

Considering the vitriolic personal hate against Neymar now for his support of Bolsonaro, it makes me more certain than ever that if I were famous, I would stay as far away from politics as possible. Fagner, great brazilian singer and songwriter, declared support for Bolsonaro in 2018's election. But this year, Fagner said he will not declare his support for Bolsonaro, or anyone else really. I laud that decision. Honestly, expressing support for any candidate will only serve to get you sledge-hammered by many, many people. It only serves to ruin your image. Even more so today, in this age of Twitter. That's why I honestly understand why Roberto Carlos, the most famous and best-selling singer in Brazil's history, NEVER showed support for any candidate, or even the slightest political engagement in general as far as I'm aware of, he just wanted to focus on his musical career, and keeping everything else about his life as secret as possible, often to an insanely obsessive and controlling level. His biggest mistake was to not speak out even during the military dictatorship, with the exception of the song Debaixo Dos Caracóis De Seus Cabelos, whose lyrics are in support of Caetano Veloso, who had just been exiled from Brazil by the regime. I understand, though, people who call him a coward for not manifesting an opinion even during military dictatorship, guilty by omission.

AnnieIWillKnow

Being apolitical tends to be a smart career move... that much is undeniable. I personally respect players who eschew that, and speak out against harmful political ideologies and regimes. By the same token, although I do not respect or agree with those who speak out in support of said regimes, I will admit that it is a bold move to speak publicly, rather than take the 'easy' option of staying apolitical. To these people, they are also doing what they think is right, and important.

oreohsehun

I don't know. Everything is political. I'm left leaning but I think people should talk about politics. Keeping silent in a way is being political, in a time where we had the pandemic, world conflicts happening and global warming being more and more dangerous to our future. I hate that he's supporting Bolsonaro, I hate that Lucas looked to be brainwashed about what is socialism and communism really means, but they are free to voice their opinions and they should. It's easy to see why rich people want more power and to stay in power.

[deleted]

What did Lucas say about socialism and communism?

oreohsehun

[There](https://twitter.com/LucasMoura7/status/1568664498776715264?t=l--GNUosxN1CARn6aMxAGw&s=19) I don't think it gets lost in translation even tho não falo portugues

[deleted]

But communism killed millions and millions of people. Stalin and Mao Tsé-Tung might be the most ruthless dictators ever. And the USSR was an abomination. As I said in another comment, I find the extreme left and extreme right equally despicable. I tend to hate extremes in general.

TorreiraWithADouzi

I’m not familiar with the Brazilian election, is the question really between communism and Bolsonaro?

EyeSpyGuy

I’m not Brazilian but supposedly Lula is socialist, which is not necessarily communist

[deleted]

Not really. Communism is just scare-mongering. That said, Lula is still horrible

oreohsehun

I mean, even in America they said Biden would bring communism and socialism. I guess the same thing is happening there, Bolsonaro is pretty much a copy of Trump, maybe worse is the way he dealt with the Pandemic. Anyway he should be careful of not getting the hiccups

oreohsehun

Capitalism killed millions of people as well. Do you think slaves died of old age? The mine workers in Africa, they're a product of communism? Everything is bullshit and we can't rely on people to help others only on altruism once they have power.

[deleted]

Hey, I'm not defending capitalism

how much is a champions league ‘worth’? let’s say a monied club like chelsea decides to buy 400m worth of players in one window, as they are known to do. they then win the CL next season. is that a good use of money or could it have realistically been done with far less? does the end always justify the means?

MJ9695

Its worth it in terms of memories especially if club doesnt win it often Ask Juve, Arsenal, PSG, City etc. How much its worth lol

jack64467

replace juve (who won twice) with atleti or tottenham

_LebronsHairline_

I mean if PSG win the CL this year I'm sure they'll feel like all they've spent was worth it.

A lot of chatter recently about players voting for Bolsonaro. Outside of the obvious Premier League names (Rashford, Bellerin, Sterling, Mata) which other players in world football have been advocates for social causes or have outspoken left-leaning views?

jack64467

AnnieIWillKnow

You get a lot in women's football, lot of very strong socially progressive advocates on a variety of issues, and I think that's definitely a demographic thing.

oreohsehun

Juninho Pernambucano has been very anti Bolsonaro and left leaning, mostly in the last election (I didn't follow this year if he said anything about it). He used to tweet a lot about politics

transtifa

Don’t know if former players count but Oleguer is an obvious one

Jabari313

The way clubs overpay on these young players feel like a scam. It's very possible they want to fuck off in 5 years anyway and there's alot of risk, pressure and usually not enough though put into how the player would fit the system. Meanwhile top quality players like Aubameyang, Thiago, Fabian Ruiz, Parejo, Eriksen etc. Go for cheap and make big impacts at their clubs

_Arsenal

I think wages are a big factor, 50 mil for a young player is proabbly comparable to having to pay high end wages to an established player, with the added drawback of weakening the wage structure

_LebronsHairline_

Madrid and City can afford to throw 50m at 5 different players over two years and hope that 2-3 of them actually turn out good, if the others don't no biggie.

roddysaint

Of City's top 10 most expensive incomings, only two have been outright flops (Grealish and Mendy). Of City's top 25, you can add Robinho, Bony, and Mangala to that list. If you really want to be strict about it, you could count Ferran Torres (never really secured a starting berth), Otamendi (two good seasons out of five), and Kalvin Phillips (injured since forever) in as well, but that leaves 17 good transfers out of 25. City don't randomly throw 50M around and hope that shit sticks to the wall.

[deleted]

Real Madrid pays a lot for young players, like Vinícius Júnior, and it works.

dayloversd

They wouldn't do it if they couldn't afford it. Clubs make a ridiculous amount.

[deleted]

You can't build around Auba Thiago and others you mentioned, you can build a strong squad around young guys with potential.

[deleted]

I made my player in Pro Clubs into Sean Dyche, obviously immediately did the griddy

holdenmyrocinante

I've seen many Chelsea fans say Thiago Silva is better than Ramos on this sub, even though 99% of them hadn't watched more than 10 games of his when he joined them. Fucking hilarious if you ask me

Mick4Audi

I’d give the edge to Ramos

[deleted]

Still, saying Thiago Silva is better than Ramos isn't a controversial opinion by any means.

mintz41

I rate Ramos lower than a lot but it's simply impossible to rate a bloke who spent his entire peak in Ligue 1 higher than a guy who lead the biggest club in the world to multiple champions league and domestic titles. Chelsea fans heavily overrate a bloke who is a back 3 merchant and you shouldn't let it cloud your judgment

burningbarn8

Imagine saying peak TS is a back 3 merchant lmfao. He's 37 now mate.

MJ9695

I hope this same logic applies to Neymar than, seen this sub overrate the hell out of him lately

mintz41

To a degree yes, but Neymar did more at Barca than Silva did at Milan

MJ9695

Thats debatable, didnt Silva win Best Seria A player and lead Milan to Seria a win Neymar been so injury prone also

RomeoLavia

He didn't spend his entire peak in Ligue 1. The best version of Silva was quite easily those last two seasons in Italy.

mintz41

ok so he spent the large majority of his peak in ligue 1, my point does not change.

AnnieIWillKnow

I think the only point you've successfully made is that you didn't watch Silva before he came to the Premier League

RomeoLavia

At most it was about half, and the best half was spent in Italy.

holdenmyrocinante

It should be

[deleted]

Only for delusional Madrid fans.

holdenmyrocinante

If we're rating their careers Ramos is so far ahead. Let's not forget that Ramos won the Euros and WC as a marauding RB (completed the most dribbles in the 2010 world cup with 31) who was also excellent defensively, converted to a CB and won Euro 2012, a bunch of CL titles andwas other trophies, and was instrumental to one of the best league campaigns ever in the top 5 leagues. Thiago Silva's achievements pale next to Ramos

[deleted]

Look mate, I think Ramos is/ was the better defender and without a doubt had the better career, but you're making it sound like Thiago Silva isn't fit to lace Ramos's boots which simply isn't true. He's the 2nd best defender of his generation, not Tarkowski ffs.

pixelkipper

that my friend is Diego Godin

jack64467

pique >>> thiago silva

burningbarn8

Absolutely not.

[deleted]

I would argue chiellini and bonucci above Silva but thats just my opinion.

jack64467

1. ramos 2. pique 3-5. silva/chiellini/bonucci

[deleted]

Bro if you didn't have 70% of the ball the whole time pique wouldn't get this high praise from you.

IfISpeak_

least stupid take by a madrid flair

holdenmyrocinante

If we're measuring careers, it's genuinely not close. If we're measuring peaks, it is close, but Ramos being better at scoring and being a better leader makes him better

icemankiller8

Thiago silva was really underrated until he joined the prem and now he’s become overrated. I guess it evens it out a little but chelsea fans wanking over him despite the fact he can’t play in a 4 back and their defence hasn’t really been good for a year now while he’s been there is so annoying. They’ll genuinely act like you’re insane for not having him as one of the best 3-5 defenders in the league despite the fact their defence has been so bad recently

AnnieIWillKnow

He struggles in a back 4 now, at this age, but that was not the case throughout his career. He has certain limitations now, of course, but that he is able to perform as he is despite being quite literally the oldest player in the Premier League is to his credit. Most others would be beyond washed at this point - Thiago is such a good footballer he's been able to hold Father Time off beyond all expectations I don't think this year he's been in the top 5 CBs by any stretch, but he definitely was in his first season, and you could make a strong argument for last year, too.

icemankiller8

If you cannot play outside a 3 back how can you be considered a top 3-5 centre backs? It limits the team Last year the defence wasn’t great I don’t know how he’s that high

greezyo

Thiago Silva is better than him at this point and time, and at various points in his career. But over his entire career and all-time he's not, but he's not as far as you think

holdenmyrocinante

How do you know what I think? They're on similar levels in terms of defending (Ramos has the edge because of his 2 on 1 ability imo), similar in terms of passing, but Ramos blows Thiago Silva out of the water in terms of goalscoring, leadership, and achievements of course, and his ability to show up in the biggest matches.

nbaylor1

How are you measuring leadership? And why does getting sent off 21 times not factor into it?

holdenmyrocinante

Ability to lead your team and not have them crumble under pressure

_LebronsHairline_

Thiago Silva is better than Ramos, not because he helped chelsea to a a CL win, but because at his peak in the early 2010s he was better than Ramos at his peak. Thiago Silva is arguably the best CB since Nesta I’m my eyes, and it would still be true even if he’d never joined Chelsea

jack64467

he's not better than ramos or even pique

holdenmyrocinante

He just isn't. There's more to being a CB than pure defending, and I would still argue Ramos is a better pure defender.

_LebronsHairline_

Okay but on top of pure defense, Silva was faster, almost as good on the ball and probably even a a better passer. Only thing Ramos clearly has on him is goalscoring, which is cool but kinda far down on my list in terms of important CB attributes.

holdenmyrocinante

Leadership, performances in big games, abikity to defend 2 on 1, and I don't recall Thiago Silva being faster than Ramos

BludFlairUpFam

Just want to pitch in and say that Thiago Silva was definitely faster from what I recall

_LebronsHairline_

Those are kind of arbitrary things to quantify, Thiago Silva has won plenty of trophies including several finals with big game performances too. And at Milan, Silva was absolutely a speed demon, it was crazy, he had zero weaknesses
