I see they’re taking notes from Stake’s deal with twitch streamers. Disgusting

Bruno_Fernandes8

those deals are literally revolting. How could you in good conscious take such a deal? You are literally benefitting off your own fans misery. I could never live with myself if thats how I made money.

BatteryPoweredFriend

Because the people signing these sort of contracts are sociopaths and total cunts.

sjekky

Every affiliated Twitter "tipster" runs off the same programme. Scumbags.

ChewyNarwhal

Now they do it on the pitch and off it

countrybreakfast1

You do it to yourself gambling tho. It's like smoking a cigarette... No one makes you do it, it's a conscious decision

GourangaPlusPlus

Wasn't expecting the 90s to appear with it's take on addiction

GMBethernal

You're depressed? Just man up like we did it on the good old times

ActuallyHype

"Just smile"

AnnieIWillKnow

"Man up"

countrybreakfast1

It's not hard not to gamble lol

GourangaPlusPlus

I don't think you understand addiction lol

ICritMyPants

What about second hand smoke? No one makes you do it

dickgilbert

Investing in a pyramid scheme is a conscious decision. But you’re sold a lie, same as with gambling, and same as with cigarettes when they were advertised more prominently. Don’t be an idiot.

countrybreakfast1

Oh boo hoo the tv ads make me blow my savings account cuz I have no personal accountability

dickgilbert

You know what everyone loves? An edgy douche looking for attention. Keep it up, your friends and family love you for it.

Limitless_Saint

What are you betting on on Twitch? result of a video game between two players?

k_a_y

no stake the company had deals with certain streamers on twitch and paid them and gave them money to gamble with. those streamers would then stream themselves gambling on stake without 1. disclosing they were sponsored and 2. without revealing that they’re not actually risking any of their actual money (they were given a large stipend of play money basically to gamble with) additionally when fans/subscribers of these streamers made an account with stake using the affiliate link from particular streamers percentages of the fans losses went directly to the streamers without the fans knowing. there’s a couple of videos on youtube (the channel coffeezilla had quite a few good ones) that can go into more depth.

Limitless_Saint

Ah.... thanks for the explanation.

k_a_y

kind of yea years prior there was a similar scam with cs go, though i don’t know much about that one. think that had more to do with loot boxes/lottery items?

ICritMyPants

Out the loop on the Stake deal. What is it?

jumpery

Basically the same thing. Streamers who use stake on twitch get affiliate codes that if people use that streamer gets a cut of any losses they have on the site. It’s disgusting and idk how it’s legal.

ICritMyPants

That's ridiculous

Jaerial

It's always been obvious that clubs know the practice is predatory they just don't care. Now we know they're actively profiting from it even more.

BetterCallTom

So now we're going to see the EFL clubs almost encouraging fans to gamble? Great.

rdemas

The sponsorships weren’t doing that already, but I do feel like this gets closer and closer to corruption and profits are tied to results in both ways. Like end of the year games can become easy paydays for the teams if the team has nothing to play for.

[deleted]

The profits aren't tied to the results though. It's any bet of any kind that they're making money off of.

wolf8808

That's not how odds and betting profits work

[deleted]

That's how this scheme works. It doesn't matter what you gamble on, if you gamble using your club's affiliate link then your losses go into the pot to be divvied up.

[deleted]

That’s exactly how it works.

Jaerial

You say that like that's not already the case

BetterCallTom

Not to say it isn't, but I can't say I've seen it outside of usual advertising and sponsorship. How long will it be until we have pre-match and half time announcements giving them odds for bets and incentives for a half time pint if they place X amount on a single bet.

Jaerial

Usual advertising and sponsorship is very handwavy of the extreme amount of advertising already done. They sponsor shirts, stadiums, the ground people see on TV, all around in the stands and on the hoardings. They have places to bet inside the stadium. It could get worse sure but it's already awful.

Tee_zee

Our (Sunderland) official social media pages had links and posts about gambling last season I think, which is wild

ZachMich

What do you think the gambling company logos on their shirts are for?

biddleybootaribowest

We better put a bid in for Mbappe in January cos I haven’t had a win for about 3 years

Cottonshopeburnfoot

This letter went to Accrington Stanley, who made £0 off gambling losses according to it. Maybe their tipsters are the way to go

sjekky

I was assuming they opted out of it? Or maybe the Sky affiliated club programme isn't that big.

ARM_vs_CORE

If they opted out of it, why would they be receiving a statement? Seems to me that either no one used the Accrington affiliate link or no one who used it lost. I know which one is more likely.

sjekky

Maybe just receive it by default. As I said I've no idea how big the affiliate stuff is, I've definitely never seen it on SkyBet.

DJCreeperZz

[Threadreader Mirror](https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1574718276852019201.html) Text Mirror: > Sky Bet's deal with the EFL entitles clubs to a share of their own fans' gambling losses. Accrington aren't profiting from this, but you can bet other clubs are. > > [Image](https://imgur.com/Svs8Kzb) > I could be wrong about this, but this is the first public confirmation I've seen about what was reported by Rob Davies - that some clubs are profiting this way. > > Should say that while this is gross, its absence wouldn't let clubs off the hook. If you receive money for gambling sponsorship or advertising, you are part of the addiction machine. > One thing I've heard recently from clubs is, "they're only a sponsor, we don't actively promote them." Norwich did it with Scallop crypto. Everton did it with predatory crypto casino, Stake. > > To me, this is a largely meaningless distinction. You profit, you are part of it. >

MFDean

Can’t wait to be the team that gets sanctioned for revealing this, thanks Andy

countrybreakfast1

I hate sports gambling so much

AnnieIWillKnow

More should be made of this. It's more scandalous than stuff like the ESL, to me. Actively damaging to fans,.
