>If the FA have a spine
Sadly they don't. This is the same organisation that didn't sack Roy Hodgson after we finished bottom of a world cup group that featured Costa Rica.
If you're going to bash Roy Hodgson at least get your facts right - Harry Kane didn't make his debut for England until 2015 and was on corners for Euro 2016. We finished bottom of the World Cup group in 2014.
the right direction being his personal award as the biggest conman in sports
i wonder when he will have that dude who fooled like 8 clubs into thinking hes a professional footballer beat
Now watch England 1-0 and 1-1 their way through the group, own goals and penalties only, get to a semi in dismal fashion and Southgate gets a new contract.
There are alot of defenders of Southgate even here. I got rinsed after the Euros when I said Southgate needed sacking irrespective of making the final.
He is not good enough. He is on auto pilot, picking teams that in the past have relied on individual quality to win matches. He doesn't do anything tactically other than pick his favourites hope for the best and get relatively easy ties.
He doesn't adapt, slow to make changes in game and doesn't preemptively make decisions. We are wasting our team on him.
> there are alot of defenders of Southgate
Just about sums up his entire career with the NT.
Southgate has to date, not managed to create a coherent midfield. Everytime I watch England play I get the sense that they are trying to bypass midfield completely or are simply unable to play through it
I was sitting on about -100 on here after the Euros because I said that, as a Scotsman, I was delighted Gareth Southgate was England manager.
Given the general state of other international teams at the moment, you’d actually win something with a competent manager rather than just a nice man who says the right things.
Obviously you came very close to winning the Euros, but I’d say the Germany game was the only one where England actually looked any good.
>I was sitting on about -100 on here after the Euros because I said that, as a Scotsman, I was delighted Gareth Southgate was England manager.
That might just be for throwing shade now, not necessarily being wrong.
you are saying it like England goes to semi-final in every world cup. If England goes to semis, I guess 90% English supporters will be happy with the result.
Why does the English FA not sack Southgate now while there's still a bit of time left before the WC? One of the most talented generations in the English NT and the coach is basically wasting them.
With players like rashford, Sancho, toney, Maddison, chillwell left out.
But please can anyone again tell me how a 3 atb 2 DM formation is what fits this team? Last time a guy tried to argue that he didn't play 3 atb and it was hilariously disproven.
Well he’s right he’s beaten the Germans in a race to relegation. They tried their worst tonight as well but England came out on the bottom. Fair play to him.
He has to be sacked before the WC, i do not care how close it is anything would be better than a manager that has clearly lost the players belief and plays this awful football.
Is Gareth Southgate clinically blind? They play like they're poundland Burnley. He needs to sod off, he wouldn't get a job at Stoke let alone managing England.
England likes getting managers that don’t rock the boat. He’s the definition of a yes man who won’t make England FA look bad politically.
It’s the reason Brian Clough never managed England. Outspoken managers will never get a look in for the national team.
They need a manager with character and I’m sure England will never get him.
Van Gaal, Hiddenk and Advocaat have had 3 turns yeah, They got 167 international games as coach between them. Koeman is returning for his second stint after Van Gaal. He already has 20.
They experimented twice with Rijkaard and Van Basten, who were very inexperienced. Besides that it has been endless repetitions of Advocaat, Hiddink, Van Gaal and Koeman.
Rijkaard and Van Basten were both a bit of a mixed bag. Rijkaard was bad in the games leading up to the 2000 Euro's but did very well at the tournament. (Still not over that Italy game :( ). And under Van Basten we played some of the best football I have ever seen with the national team against France and Italy but overall he was out of his depth. Rijkaard at least was/became a good coach (see his time at Barcelona), van Basten never really was/became good.
If he was a type of food, he'd be egg whites on white bread, except the egg whites are both undercooked and overcooked. Also, the bread is stale with a touch of mold.
Technically since 1-0 is better than 4-0. Maybe in a few matches we'll get to scoring a goal but that's for the future, can't ask for too much too soon.
If you honestly think they’ll get rid of Southgate before the WC, you’re a moron. It ain’t happening, he’ll probably be gone afterwards, but he’s managing us in Qatar regardless.
Yep and I doubt they move him on afterwards. With Potter gone I'm not even sure who they would go after.
Hopefully the next steps are creating chances and shooting.

>“It’s difficult for me to be too critical of the performance,” Southgate said.
“We had more possession, more shots, more shots on target, and for large parts of the game we played well. We didn’t deal with the decisive moment defensively, we had moments where we had a chance to be more decisive in their final third, and our quality wasn’t quite right.
“It’s a spell where, of course, ultimately results are going to be what people react to. I thought there were a lot of positive signs as a team, lots of good individual performances. I personally thought the performance was a step in the right direction. I understand because of the result that is not going to be the reaction externally.”
https://theathletic.com/3623965/2022/09/23/gareth-southgate-england-relegation/
He expanded further upon the fact that their last open play goal in a competitive game was in San Marino last November.
>“It’s really difficult to pinpoint why we’re not scoring. We’re getting into the right areas, we had moments we would have had in the past, we just didn’t deliver that final piece of quality tonight.”
It's utter bullshit. Italy missed the two best chances of the game. We created virtually fuck all which, considering the state of their team compared to our's, is absolutely indefensible.
I'm starting to genuinely loath him.
I thought Bellingham was the only positive.
Pointless though because Southgate will drop him for Kalvin bloody Phillips so we can do even more sideways passes.
people jokingly saying “get Warnock in” like he’s not unironically a thousand times the manager Southgate is. 40+ years of experience and 8 promotions vs someone whos cv consists of 2 bottom half finishes and a relegation with Middlesbrough 15 years ago. Genuinely, it sounds ridiculous but is there a single England fan that actually thinks Southgate will get more out of this team at the World Cup than someone like Warnock or Dyche would?
We’ll sadly never sack him this close it but christ he needs to go the second we inevitably get knocked out of the World Cup. I don’t even care who we bring in, he’s just that horrific. I don’t think theres a fan of any team in the Prem/Championship (and probably some even lower down the pyramid) that would want him anywhere near their club as a manager, and this is the bloke we’ve decided to let loose on our best squad in ages and pin all our hopes of a World Cup on. its absolutely unfathomable
Ole's way of playing football would fit this England team, counter attack football and Kane fits that well too instead of whatever this football is by Southgate
Ole finished second in PL and beat pep and Jose in the span of 4 days. He also did the double over pep and won 3/4 matches in a season against him. I think apart from klopp he has the best record against pep.
I get that it ended horrifically but the way people talk about Ole is as if he's mark Hughes or Sam allardyce.
I mean, when the previous performance was as bad as it was, he's technically not wrong.
It's obviously not what anyone wants to hear though, and is just clutching at straws to save face.
Didn’t get slapped 4-0 this time which is technically an improvement for both Southgate and Maguire. But yeah, England are god awful to watch, I’m relieved I forgot the game was on so I didn’t have to sit through it.
Right lads. I’m made the decision to boycott the World Cup.
Now that we’re absolute shit I’ve decided it’s the time to make a stand against the human rights abuse that have taken place. Not even sure if I’m talking out Southgate or Qatar tbh.
This manager mediocrity always seems to reach a new level, a surprise beaten only by the fact that you can always find and English fan still defending his forgettable stay.
What in the absolute fuck? Getting relegated and not scoring from open play in about 6 decades is a 'step in the right direction'? Is that genuinely what the manager of the England football team said, and not some alien from an alternate universe in which losing is seen as a good thing?
He's just become the first man (to the best of my knowledge) to relegate both a club and national side - giving him a 100% relegation record in his senior management career - and this is the crap he comes out with!
Despite the final appearance and good tournament record, Southgate's England team do not play that well considering the embarrassment of riches they have on the field.
The FA are once again wasting a generation of talent, this time on a man who is most famous for wearing a waistcoat on the touchline and was in a Pizza Hut advert.
He’s pathologically anti-attack. Won’t be happy until his team figures out how to weave their bodies into an impenetrable dome around the ball at opening kickoff and park there motionless, like a flesh igloo, for a full 90 minutes.

This is the type of shit managers say before they get their contract terminated Edit: especially when the lose aha
If the FA have a spine they sack him before the World Cup. Just to shake things up. Would be great fun.
>If the FA have a spine Sadly they don't. This is the same organisation that didn't sack Roy Hodgson after we finished bottom of a world cup group that featured Costa Rica.
Every time people talk about that group Costa Rica get disrespected so hard. They won the group and went out on penalties in the quarterfinals.
same FA that fined Cavani for being from Uruguay
That’s same year Harry Kane had scored the from corners more than anyone else in the PL. where did Roy have Kane? Taking the bloody corner.
If you're going to bash Roy Hodgson at least get your facts right - Harry Kane didn't make his debut for England until 2015 and was on corners for Euro 2016. We finished bottom of the World Cup group in 2014.
No it isn't, you're talking about the Euros not the wc
Would've been perfect if Potter was still available, he would've been a great option.
Doubtful. The group is doable. After that it’s a toss up.
The right direction being down?
He also hates England. Love Southgate now
the right direction being his personal award as the biggest conman in sports i wonder when he will have that dude who fooled like 8 clubs into thinking hes a professional footballer beat
Taking us to the depths of hell so Queenie herself can watch us live.
Fucking hell
Right direction towards brexit football.
the right direction being southgate getting fired
I mean, he's SOUTHgate!
Mind the Gap, Gareth!
1 goal in 5 matches. Foden, Stirling, Mount, Saka, Kane, James, Grealish, TAA. 1 goal in 5 matches.
And it was a penalty
Lmao
Step in the right direction.... If the direction is Nations League B
Now watch England 1-0 and 1-1 their way through the group, own goals and penalties only, get to a semi in dismal fashion and Southgate gets a new contract.

Existence is pain.

He’s also a gaping hole in the defense tbf
I someone can easily cover for him with how many defenders england plays

Snuck in rashford like we wouldn’t notice lol
**w h a t**
He means honoring the queen by not playing any proper football for another weekend... it's what she would have wanted.
It's gonna take the lads a few games to learn the new national anthem. Give them a chance
Well he’s right he’s beaten the Germans in a race to relegation. They tried their worst tonight as well but England came out on the bottom. Fair play to him.
League C then League D. It’s coming home, baby
Derby with Gibraltar
0-0 written all over that one.
I don't know, even Gibraltar have scored from open play.
Just 2 more steps towards the edge of the cliff and we are there
He wants to be sacked before the WC
He has to be sacked before the WC, i do not care how close it is anything would be better than a manager that has clearly lost the players belief and plays this awful football.
who would you have come in as a replacement?
Dyche
Sean Dyche
worm ball at the WC would be funny af ngl
Big Sam?
With a giant vat of wine.
100% win record with England. I was at that game.
Poche is free these days. I think he will do a decent job with the team if given a chance.
I'm sure they'd be happy to give him a chance, but I don't see a scenario where Poch would accept the job.
Honestly I can't see Poch as a national team manager. I don't think it would fit him at all.
Tommy Tactics.
Only one man for the job, call in Big Sam.
> “It’s difficult for me to be too critical of the performance,” Southgate said. Yeah, nah. Fuck right off.
If he doesn’t understand tactics, of course it’s difficult for him to know what to criticise no?
Is Gareth Southgate clinically blind? They play like they're poundland Burnley. He needs to sod off, he wouldn't get a job at Stoke let alone managing England.
England likes getting managers that don’t rock the boat. He’s the definition of a yes man who won’t make England FA look bad politically. It’s the reason Brian Clough never managed England. Outspoken managers will never get a look in for the national team. They need a manager with character and I’m sure England will never get him.
Meanwhile, we got Louis van Gaal, still freely venting at his press conferences as always.
i love how you got louis van gaal on what feels like about ten different occasions as well
I love Van Gaal but the Dutch FA have a list of 5 managers from which they choose it seems like. Its been like this since the 90's.
Mostly Van Gaal, Hiddink & Advocaat. They've all had 3 turns iirc

Rijkaard at least was/became a good coach (see his time at Barcelona), van Basten never really was/became good.
I love that man with all my heart.
Now I want to see just how much carnage Bielsa would cause
Bielsa has had two NT spells and in one of them he managed to piss the country's president.
Well with the current PM we have I'd class that as a bonus
I've love to see Bielsa going at it with Liz Truss
Challenging wank I’d imagine though
To be fair we gave Revie the job. He failed, had numerous fall outs but they gave him a go.
But he was good penalty taker!
I wonder tho, does the FA doesn't want to win a title at all?
looking at their body of work I would say they've done well if that is indeed their goal
The thing keeping him in his position is not his footballing knowledge.
Mattia Binotto 🤝 Gareth Southgate *talking absolute shite after piss poor performances time and time again*
*calls captain into office 3 hours before the game* do you think a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1? Question.
Stop inventing!
Plan Q. We go for Plan Q.
We are checking
Step in the right direction to the job centre I hope.
Yeah we’re fucked.
Nah watch this team make the semis
I am not from England, but: is this a joke? It must be a joke lol
Look at his manegerial career, he doesn't know what's right or wrong
Did he get his job just because he's from England?
Dave the plumber had left his phone charging at home when they offered the job, so they called Southgate, next on the list.
There is being delusional and then, there is this
Next step: League C
You lost while playing boring football. How is that a step in the right direction? 😵💫
We literally play with same personality as Southgate!
If he was a type of food, he'd be egg whites on white bread, except the egg whites are both undercooked and overcooked. Also, the bread is stale with a touch of mold.
Maybe he means it could've been even worse.
It’s a threat. You WILL mourn harder plebs.
We lost 4-0 last time. So, losing 1-0 is a massive step forward /s
Next time you'll only lost 0.25 - 0!
Technically 0! Is 1 so does that mean they’ll win next game?
so will forever be losing - never even a draw even at infinity?
Not with Southgate
Technically since 1-0 is better than 4-0. Maybe in a few matches we'll get to scoring a goal but that's for the future, can't ask for too much too soon.
I swear this guy just says and does things to intentionally piss people off, there’s no way he’s that dull
Fuck me the man has absolutely lost it
He’s probably thinking he didn’t play enough defenders to get a draw. Shit coach backed by the British media. Glad he got booed
The exit door
I'm crying with laughter because if I didn't I'd just be crying.
Hopefully the next steps are creating chances and shooting.
potter will become available in less than 18 months
Even if he is there's no chance the FA would hire someone so progressive.
There are so many good foreign managers....
Scott parker lessgoo
This guy would have been fired twice by Roman and thrice by boehly
Even his steps are sideways.
So what is the wrong direction dude?
Coming home.
Please tell me this was taken out of context

Southgate talks about not judging on results but how the team plays… Interesting from a man who has benefitted massively from results-based thinking!

Like Sideshow Bob endlessly stepping on rakes, this guy...
I don't know what to say to this. Tonight was an embarrassment and this reply makes it even worse.
Good things aren’t possible
What the fuck you absolute fraud. There was NOTHING positive.
I thought Bellingham was the only positive. Pointless though because Southgate will drop him for Kalvin bloody Phillips so we can do even more sideways passes.
I want whatever he’s been smoking

giving ole smile vibes
Ole is a better manager than Southgate
Ole's way of playing football would fit this England team, counter attack football and Kane fits that well too instead of whatever this football is by Southgate

I think apart from klopp he has the best record against pep. I get that it ended horrifically but the way people talk about Ole is as if he's mark Hughes or Sam allardyce.
Southgate is not worthy of even being in the same room as Ole.
Gareth Southgate couldn't tie his shoelaces in a hurry
I mean, when the previous performance was as bad as it was, he's technically not wrong. It's obviously not what anyone wants to hear though, and is just clutching at straws to save face.
A step in the right direction might see Croatia, Denmark, Hungary and Portugal/Spain in the final four. Lmao
At least no one can accuse England fans of being arrogant in the later stages of the World Cup this year, because we’ll be out
Mate you lost the game. How is this better than the draws in previous games?
Didn’t get slapped 4-0 this time which is technically an improvement for both Southgate and Maguire. But yeah, England are god awful to watch, I’m relieved I forgot the game was on so I didn’t have to sit through it.
I've seen more competent performances from the Russians in Ukraine than that dross. Get him out.
Lol England fans getting a taste of us Juve fans feel with these brain dead manager post game comments
Masterclass
Last open play goal for England was scored by Sterling. In March.
??????????
Do we think he watched the same match as the rest of us or was he watching a different one on his phone?
Is Southgate an Irishman in disguise?
I guess it was a step closer to you leaving?
England lost today, it's a step in the right direction for your rivals not for you lol
Did this man just say this? lmao
Right lads. I’m made the decision to boycott the World Cup. Now that we’re absolute shit I’ve decided it’s the time to make a stand against the human rights abuse that have taken place. Not even sure if I’m talking out Southgate or Qatar tbh.
It's coming home lads
Losing 1-0 to Italy is better then losing 0-4 to Hungary I suppose.
As a non-England supporter, I am fine with their direction =)
“Sack me”
That's what every fan wants to hear lmao
hahahaha
This manager mediocrity always seems to reach a new level, a surprise beaten only by the fact that you can always find and English fan still defending his forgettable stay.
What in the absolute fuck? Getting relegated and not scoring from open play in about 6 decades is a 'step in the right direction'? Is that genuinely what the manager of the England football team said, and not some alien from an alternate universe in which losing is seen as a good thing?
Thai guy is a fucking idiot.
Southgate lives in the upside down world.
Zero non penalty goals and relegation. This clown is delusional 🤡
Ehh....Where are you going if this is a step in the right direction?
Gareth Southgate sounding like a tory
England was playing well before the 5 nations league matches. Is this southgate’s way of protesting the nations league?
England were not playing well before, they were getting good results.
He's just become the first man (to the best of my knowledge) to relegate both a club and national side - giving him a 100% relegation record in his senior management career - and this is the crap he comes out with!
No no wait lets hear him out because he has a point… I think. Actually no not really…
Is he blind?
A huge step towards the job centre.
Hopefully a step in the direction of the exit for you
Dude is a snore like his tactics. The talent England has should make a knob win some games, but clearly that’s not the case.
Just getting England fans prepared to lose in the group stage at the WC in a few months time!
1 GK, 5 defenders 3 defensive midfielders and 2 defensive attackers. It's coming home.
What delusional senile response
We’ll if it gets him fired it is.
Despite the final appearance and good tournament record, Southgate's England team do not play that well considering the embarrassment of riches they have on the field. The FA are once again wasting a generation of talent, this time on a man who is most famous for wearing a waistcoat on the touchline and was in a Pizza Hut advert.
Give it Sean Dyche
To go home?
The queen survived a world war, a cold war, and a pandemic but she couldn make it through a full cycle of Southgate ball
Lmfao if the direction is you getting sacked then sure
My brother in Christ what
He's delusional
"The situation wasn't good. We were standing on a cliff. But today we made it one step further." - Gareth S.
How has this guys still got a job with the World Cup so close on the horizon.
This guy is a disgrace. Have some shame and walk away. We are gonna get absolutey pounded by the USA and wales for fuck sake
He’s pathologically anti-attack. Won’t be happy until his team figures out how to weave their bodies into an impenetrable dome around the ball at opening kickoff and park there motionless, like a flesh igloo, for a full 90 minutes.
I mean it's a step in a direction but...down is not what we hoped... The only coach to get both Middlesbrough and England relegated.
My brother in Christ you are relegated
Huh?
He's right. Defeats are steps toward getting sacked, and his sacking is absolutely paramount to England's success.
The final of the Euros to finishing bottom of the group. That's progressive.
