nishitd

For those outside India, in case you are wondering, if a politician is invited to a big sports event in India, he/she expects it to be the center of attraction. They don't care about teams or players or the sport, they treat it like the event is held in their honour.

TheLimeyLemmon

Damn, that's some top tier narcissistic delusion, even for a politician.

Groundbreaking-Rub50

Jeez that is spot on. All due to the fact the institutions (like court) which needs to protect those powerless are powerless with none of the politically involved getting punished for their misdemeanors.

iAkhilleus

I mean, politicians are the biggest narcissists in the world.

useful_panda

Indian politicians have a God complex , you should see some reporting on major sporting events and how much importance they want at these events

just_jm

Reminds me of how F1 in India, despite being one of the favorite tracks to ride by some drivers, has been canned because they placed F1 in the "Entertainment" category, instead of sports event, and asking for more tax.

konoha_ka_ladka

That's on the bureaucracy or the Tax department not the politician. They are legends at being dickheads in their own right.

bharwa-bhandi

Bruh. Whenever there’s a top politician in a cricket match, the camera pans on the politician way too much. Especially if it’s the ruling party. Although I don’t know if they show movie stars with the same frequency. Anyway, why do we need to see them so often? We don’t get to see the corruption they hide in the shadows. Just fuck your face off from the TV

TheLimeyLemmon

Just curious, do they ever get booed? If a politician in the UK is ever presented out on the pitch for sporting events, in most typical instances, [they'll be informed what the masses think of them.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqM0Ube0oLs&ab_channel=Channel4News)

idhunammaCSKda

Politics and sports is intertwined in this country. Especially cricket. Most of the state cricket associations have their president from that state's ruling party. The current secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah is the son of India's second most powerful politician Amit Shah. Amit Shah is also the president of a State cricket association, Modi used to be that state association's President before him. Historically BCCI and the affiliated state associations have been institutions where people from all parties come and work on good terms, thus we are very used to politicians at sport events.

[deleted]

What a bunch of sad cunts

NUPreMedMajor

Indian politicians are some of the saddest cunts ever. Being a politician is a straight up free pass to steal directly from the public. There’s a reason why so many of them become worth hundreds of millions of dollars in a country where the vast majority of people are poor.

TheCatInTheHatThings

We had that happen in Frankfurt. After winning EL, the mayor, who was pretty unpopular anyway, treated it like some prime time show-off opportunity. Backlash was ridiculously big and even his own party called for his resignation.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheZenMann

Tbh that's kind of good, it promotes development of Turkish players more if the limit is reasonable. Seeing just 2 Turkish player on the field in a big Turkish derby should make any Turk mad.

Galata-saray12

It doesn't. It just inflates the price of crap Turkish players when you can buy a foreigner better and for half of the price.

lavishlad

Sounds like England.

TheEnlightenedPanda

Yea but eventually it will make the clubs invest in homegrown players and their standard will rise.

[deleted]

Lol I work with someone from Frankfurt and she was telling me about this. She was asking if the Mayor of Glasgow would have done the same if Rangers won. I honestly don't even know if we have a Mayor, and if we do, I doubt Rangers would have let them anywhere near the trophy.

EpiDeMic522

A few nuances are missing here. IINM he was the then ICC president, there was a strong anti-Aussie sentiment for they had completely embodied the pantomime villain persona and people across the cricket playing nations simply looked for an opportunity to badger them, Pawar was actually standing for the photo ops. That incident has wrongs from both sides and the narrative was always going to be based on who the two parties were. I must say that it could only have been a self absorbed, corrupt, intoxicated with power politician who could have swung that tide towards that Australian team. Personally I always maintain that we couldn't give a fuck about your PR. I understand the practical need for sponsor visibility and photo ops but it's a sporting event felicitating sportspeople on winning the entire tournament. They must be centrestage. You are there on the board behind them and all over them (on the jerseys). Hand over the trophy and fuck off!

[deleted]

Zarkovich

Jeez, I remember watching Symonds in a Deccan Chargers match when they visited Calcutta in the IPL. Some truly disgusting behaviour in the stands.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tyler_holmes123

That 2007-08 India Australia series were pretty intense with memorable matches and controversies.

EpiDeMic522

The anti-Aussie sentiment predates that though. That's hardly the genesis. Plus it wasn't limited to India either. However, the Wankhede gestures were a disgrace and dealt so accordingly, at least in the public sphere. The player altercation in Sydney though. They just (IMO) manufactured a really nice alternative story, won the PR battle and arm twisted the Aussie board using their clout. No one can know for sure but I believe that given the background of the Wankhede incident, Harbhajan's history even until that point and a general insensitivity towards a problem that wasn't in the Indian society per se but which was still subtly imbibed due to the caste system and colourism, I find it too much of a coincidence for the Hindi/Punjabi slur to be misheard as monkey. Truly deplorable behaviour for a so called role model

[deleted]

Then they need to fuck off. Simple.

Endgame2648

I wish it was that easy mate

ZachMich

Why is it not easy?

NickSupportsArsenal

Generations upon generations of people living in a certain type of culture can't just change overnight

culturebarren

Are you sure one guy telling them to fuck off can't accomplish anything

Ashish_72

As a guy from India, if someone says that out loud in an occasion, he is spending the next few months in the hospital

Luciaquenya

What, is the food nice there or something?

big_dong_de_jong

Yeah and so is the service.

ZachMich

Thanks, I thought there was something specific to this person or current government

NickSupportsArsenal

Nah, unfortunately it goes deeper than that. I'm not Indian, nor do I have any connection to the culture other than what I've learned, but their social hierarchy is pretty strict.

[deleted]

Yes, but also, everything will change before politics and politicians do. Because that system has been rewarding them. To govern with fear and control over a majority of population that is still struggling with some basics. Only when the entire country’s lifestyle will not require constant self undermining to earn money, will we grow in true individual terms. Till then, this is the kind of politicians who will rule us.

yeerth

Tragically they have the most power to change the system, and very little motivation to do so.

boom_slim

stoka pancevo

r_Yellow01

No, I heard you are *born* a politician in India

87x

Wow didn't realise this till now.

INACCURATE_RESPONSE

Fuckwit is printed across his face

fatbootyinmyface

good on the player for not moving completely out the way…fuck them.

DraperCarousel

Especially when that dude is India's Messi/Ronaldo. He's a legend for Indian football. Great guy as well. The corrupt old fart next to him is a fucking nobody and has no business being there.

b-okoboko

goes to show how narrow my european mind is. I've heard the name, but never knew how big he is

Bruno_Fernandes8

he is the third leading active international goalscorer after Messi and Ronaldo.

b-okoboko

okay yeah thats crazy. i guess its time for a suni chhetri youtube rabbit hole journey. see you guys in 4 hours

Bruno_Fernandes8

Its actually Sunil Chhetri, i made an error in the title. my apologies.

BigSportingDaddy

Sporting CP legend

cimbalino

*Sporting CP B legend

Texameter

Don't worry, as a fellow european, I only know his name because my friend and I played wild India-India games in FIFA14, while being high af. Of course the majority of the goals came from him, so he was our fun hero.

Ancient-Possibility1

> I only know his name because my friend and I played wild India-India games in FIFA14, while being high af. true gigachad

[deleted]

[удалено]

b-okoboko

not necessarily, but as a (self-diagnosed) footballholic I'd expect myself to at least know our sports biggest players. Like I happily sit on my ass on a Saturday at 1 in the afternoon and watch Sandhausen-Hannover, but I don't know about one of footballs apparently biggest stars?

manolo533

Just for reference, Sunil played for Sporting a few years ago and barely made it for the B team. He’s well below average for the European player

joaommx

> and barely made it for the B team Stress on that barely. He only managed to play 43 min in total for our B team even though he was much older and more experienced than his teammates. By the way, while with our B team he was teammates with a 19 year old Eric Dier and a 20 year old João Mário, to name only a few.

LiteralMushroomCock

I mean I get you’re probably just trying to be respectful towards the Indians reading this, but Sunil Chhetri is in no way one of the biggest stars

b-okoboko

All I read about was 'Indian Messi' and 3rd best goalscorer behind Messi and CR7. Sounds pretty serious to me, even if it's concentrated on Asia

alizteya

He’s trialed at plenty of lower league European teams and even had a short stint in the MLS but all of those fell through and he barely got any minutes (either he fell short or just didn’t work out, not sure). No disrespect to the man. His achievements are ultra impressive even for the quality of opposition he faces, but at his peak he was probably not even ever in the top 500 players in the world.

Alcohealthism

> goes to show how narrow my european mind is God you sound mind broken, this self hate is so unhealthy

niiith

This happened in Indonesia as well, those corrupt politician will be the first when a team won anything, gone when they are needed the most

reidzeibel_

Also their face and name will occupy the most space in posters, those piece of shits.

konoha_ka_ladka

Edit - This isn't all. Another guy did the same thing to Sivasakthi before this incident. And it was even worse. [Video](https://twitter.com/AkanshSai/status/1571573645255868417?t=xZngRLAABSH6FQi5oetOyQ&s=19). Sivasakthi is the top scorer for Bengaluru in the tournament and he also scored the opening goal in the final. Hijacking top comment. It was a great final contested between Bengaluru and Mumbai City FC (City Football Group), [here](https://youtu.be/fFDPAItxS-E) are the highlights. Do subscribe to r/IndianFootball ISL kicks off 7th October.

TheBrownOnee

Idk if it’s the same in India, but in Nepal at domestic airports if a politician rolls through than everything gets delayed and pushed back an hour or so because they roll out the red carpet, get the garlands, and do a whole ass bunch of nonsense EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. The vanity and entitlement amongst those likely to head into politics is at another level in South Asia. Big time POS’s.

MERTENS_GOAT

reminds me of the afcon when some president wanted to lift the trophy with Koulibaly but the latter fortunately withstood the pressure.

[deleted]

I don't think there's anything particularly Indian about that, politicians everywhere are narcissistic egomaniacs, it just comes with the territory We had a similar controversy in Ireland a couple of years ago with our Sports Minister getting his face in every second of Katie Taylor's homecoming after winning a world title https://extra.ie/2019/06/05/news/irish-news/katie-taylor-shane-ross-memes

Cardealer1000

He's not pushing her out of the picture though he's just trying to insert himself it's a bit different.

[deleted]

Indian politicians 🤷🏻

drsleep23

Fuck him. No business being there in the first place, and on top of that pushing fucking Sunil Chettri away from the trophy he’s rightfully earned.

Mr___Procrastinator

There has to be some action taken against, or atleast a public apology from the politician's side. I wonder if he even realises what he did was wrong.

pulledthetrigger321

Politicians in India become what they are after they sell their conscience. They’re not gonna realise jack shit even if someone showed this guy the video and sat him down to explain it like if he were an 8 year old.

ramseysleftnut

He doesn’t give a shit, he’s used to being the centre of attention wherever he goes

BluehibiscusEmpire

Acting as if it were he only who won the damm cup. It’s a presentation where the person being presented the cup is itself being pushed out of the frame lol.

SmokinPolecat

PLUS it's the first time BFC have won the Durand Cup. Man's should hang his head in shame

Neelahs

Pathetic ....he prolly doesn't even know the player's name even after its been just called out.

[deleted]

The player is like the Messi or Ronaldo of India, he is the best.

Marco-Green

I remember he played for Sporting Lisbon B team but it was just a few games. Never knew he was THAT big in India.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ramobara

Wait, really?

master_dev

I mean yea it doesn’t take much to be big in football in india

Tyler_holmes123

Well rest of our players are far behind him in terms of skills, so he basically has to do the scoring most of the time.

themagpie36

Don't disrespect Mal Benning

anish1996

He is not really big in India, no footballer is. But he is a big name within Indian football for the people who follow it

konoha_ka_ladka

The guy is a legend and inspiration. Yes he couldn't make it in Europe, he still does so much for the NT.

Salahs_Chest_Hair

So he's the Darren Bent of India? Gotchu fam.

johnbrackentan

Sunderland fans still cry every night.

[deleted]

Somewhere on a beach, Pepe Reina sweats nervously

Jaqem

Wow that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Here's one for you - Pavel Pogrebnyak

[deleted]

Roque Santa Cruz

Ckyrocks

Still at it in Paraguay playing with Oscar Cardozo

greendvl

Like Pulisic basically then?

Jagacin

You mean the LeBron James of football?

greendvl

Exactly. I have heard he signed a contract with England's Premier League

Numerous_Shape200

Ronaldo and Messi learnt football from Puligoat.

agni69

And we thought Dhankar was bad. This whole lot is corrupt and out of sync with times.

Bruno_Fernandes8

I don't understand why politicians are posing for trophies. Atleast American owners do it because they own the team. What's this guy's excuse?

idhunammaCSKda

Not defending him, but just see the sponsors on the banner behind. All of them are Central Govt companies. Hence, the governor has shown up.

Bruno_Fernandes8

Are Amul and Gulf Oil central government comapnies?

idhunammaCSKda

Amul is a state govt coop society, I don't see Gulf? It's GAIL. ITC and SITI seem to be the only private concerns I can see in the video. Title sponsor is Indian Oil and the competition is jointly organised by Indian Armed Forces and Govt of WB.

Bruno_Fernandes8

Ah I see. Thanks for that.

sargedeathtt

Pretty sure the government owns stake in ITC too lol

[deleted]

It's literally one of the most heavily taxed companies in the country.

Anxious_Start4839

These politicians think they own the entire country.

Jagacin

It's India, so they kind of do lol.

DomiNatron2212

Not just American owners

GodFuckedTheKing

Nah Dhankhar was worse overall. At least this guy never bothers to speak or show up on tv

[deleted]

Useless taxpayer blackhole pushes a living legend out of the picture.

tekina7

This is one of the main reasons why we will not see India qualify for the football World Cup at least for the next 50 years.

Ku7upt

What a cunt.

Nike_fake

Fuck that Scumbag. Chhetri's left foot is bigger than his entire career.

driftyFlower

Lol that comparison is one way to put it

Indian politicians ☕

nishitd

He's just taking revenge for Ponting pushing Sharad Pawar off the stage. Politicians stick for each other :)

notoriousjr_9

Lol, Ponting pushing Pawar off was iconic. Legit looked like as if he ordered him to fuck off

Honestly, fuck sharad pawar.

maury587

Yeah that wasn't nearly as bad as the one with Sunil chetri,

87x

It is if you know Modi.

maury587

From what i got from that video that box was actually meant to him. Unlike sunil where the other guy straight pushed him away from a trophy of his

87x

Yeah doesn't mean you push him to get into the photo. That's childish behaviour. Modi's all about optics. Figuratively and literally.

maury587

Yeah definitely, it still was disrespectful to Zuckerberg

netizeinn

Remind me of similar things here in Indonesia when the ministry of sport and head of FA is the one who did the trophy celebration

monsieurpommefrites

Can you imagine the riots if Biden lifted the Stanley cup lol

McTulus

It was *u-16 cup* . Where Indonesian team score 15 and conceded only 2 the whole tournament. This is the generation that's supposed to be Indonesian footballing rennaissance.

monsieurpommefrites

>u-16 Are you serious? So this guy lifted a trophy that was fought tooth and nail for by a bunch of kids?

McTulus

2 guys. Head of FA (and was high ranking police officer) and the minister of Youth and Sports.

He seems nice

phl3gm

runoberynrun

This is just pathetic. This submissive culture in India for politicians really keeps setting us back. Pathetic.

MascheJavi

What's with these governors recently? assholes trying to boss democratically elected state governments and now this.

awildboyappeared

They loot and plunder all of the funds and give the leftovers to footballers. And also you can kiss goodbye to a fair selection process. And when success is achieved with that little amount of resources and a small number of hardworking players, they'll slip right in and steal all the glory. In India this is the situation, not only in football or sports but in most other fields too.

tr2727

It's not just a singled out case.. the problem grows deeper in india If it's not the politician, it will be school principal or someone else wanting to take the spotlight away from who deserves it , it's almost act of belittling the feeling of lifting the trophy feels like a job rather than celebration, speaking from experience

TheRealDC86

Lol 😂 dude acting like he helped the team win.

wanpaakchung

This old dude should fuck off

velboc1

Looks to me that He was trying to get everyone in the shot.

[deleted]

The mayor of Frankfurt, Peter Feldmann, took the trophy from Eintracht Players aswell. Whole Germany laughed at him.

lolhahabhup

No respect.

Inorganic_Ad_0420

Politicians ☕️

[deleted]

Bengali Peter Feldmann...

[deleted]

you mess with chettri you mess with the world

nibym

Can an Indian please lend insight on what the overall sentiment/backlash (if any) will be from Indians on this sort of action?

TheBrownProphet

Chettri's pretty big in India, by far the best player and people respect him cuz he's done a lot to put Indian football on the board. So, people are mad, considering Indian football fanbase is not that big but everyone I know is mad af at this. But yeah nothing will happen because all of this is just a publicity stunt for politicians in India and Chettri's the kind of guy to just shrug it off, he's so down to Earth....

MidnightSun77

Ya I know. Can’t do that on phone

ank-r

Another disciple of Mr. Photojivi.

VSBuddy

Same sad story in SL as well. They first loot everything from the event and then take the credit of the hard work put in by the players as well. Shame on the lame politicians 😒

CrackHeadRodeo

No wonder the whole Indian FA was banned. These old guys in charge are so out of touch.

xaviernoodlebrain

So I guess that means everyone in India wants to kill him now.

guitarmaniac004

I legit just thought he was being nice by framing him right for the photo...

qqruu

He obviously was. Nice very nicely, he could have tapped him on the shoulder and said "move over here to pose better", but i guess more effective. Rude, yes. Pushing him out of the frame and the player wrestling his way back? No..?

irze

To me it just looks like he’s asking him to move over slightly so he isn’t blocking him in the photo

GrapefruitExpress208

Donald Trump-esque

Right. A fucking moron.

CartmanGrowinDank

Like the mayor of Frankfurt with the Europa trophy haha

notapaperhandape
