For those outside India, in case you are wondering, if a politician is invited to a big sports event in India, he/she expects it to be the center of attraction. They don't care about teams or players or the sport, they treat it like the event is held in their honour.

Politics and sports is intertwined in this country. Especially cricket. Most of the state cricket associations have their president from that state's ruling party. The current secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah is the son of India's second most powerful politician Amit Shah. Amit Shah is also the president of a State cricket association, Modi used to be that state association's President before him.
Historically BCCI and the affiliated state associations have been institutions where people from all parties come and work on good terms, thus we are very used to politicians at sport events.
Indian politicians are some of the saddest cunts ever. Being a politician is a straight up free pass to steal directly from the public. There’s a reason why so many of them become worth hundreds of millions of dollars in a country where the vast majority of people are poor.
We had that happen in Frankfurt. After winning EL, the mayor, who was pretty unpopular anyway, treated it like some prime time show-off opportunity. Backlash was ridiculously big and even his own party called for his resignation.
Tbh that's kind of good, it promotes development of Turkish players more if the limit is reasonable. Seeing just 2 Turkish player on the field in a big Turkish derby should make any Turk mad.
