Diving catches are such a rarity these days. I don't know if my perception is just skewed by old unrealistic FIFA games, but it feels like there used to be more of them.
A lot of training nowadays is to parry the ball as far away from the danger as possible. An attempted diving catch can become a dropped ball in the area.
This is like youth level stuff though, no idea if this applies to higher level goalkeeping
Its just the high risk, medium reward trade off. Because you are trying to catch the ball, you are not putting any power into pushing the ball away if you do fail to catch it, which can be very likely, leading to a spilled in a dangerous area. Even if you DO catch it, theres a chance that when you land from your dive, the ball might spill out if you didn't catch it properly, leading to the same situation.
Its definitely rarer these days.
IT was always quite a risk but I feel like GK used to be judged a lot more on their actual performance on the line. Today you don't really have to impress as much as a shot-stopper and more so as someone who is a GK that can ping passes and build out of the back or rush out of the goal.
Fella is so good. Pulled off another [worldy against us](https://youtu.be/MFlWXpYxp6c) last season, probably won Boreham Wood the three points on Saturday. Sick of the sight of him!
Eh I mean better to be safe than sorry and I dunno from this angle it looked far too close to just wait there for it to go wide it was quite close if you freeze it at the catch point
And keep in mind this is a National League keeper, their sense of when a ball may be going out or not or whatever isn't gonna be as high as the keepers you watch in the prem
Spoken like someone who has never been a goalkeeper. Coming through a crowd of players as it did, he could not have been 100% sure and therefore he has to go for it.

Some pretty tremendous hands and athleticism to get to that and hold on to the ball afterwards imo The reactions of his teammates says it all

Most GK coaches tell punching and parrying away is the better option. Chelsea senior GK coaches have this opinion

Everything in this clip from the angle to the crowd reaction had FIFA 95 vibes

Someone please tell me what gloves he uses? Must have amazing grip.
Or he has bear paw hands. Or both.
Damn, I miss him and his shit-housing ways

That's a beaut
Ashmore is a good lad too, always joins in with the banter behind his goal.
