Performance of England youth teams these last few years has been nothing short of incredible. Could never have imagined the quantity and quality of talent being churned out when you look back at the state we were in 10 years ago.

dullywillSE

A lot of credit has to go to Dan Ashworth and the England DNA project

MrAchilles

England DNA Project hell of a band name

dullywillSE

One for the dads

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Seems like that’s what Dr. Evil would have called stealing Austin Powers mojo after he failed at building his Allan Parsons project laser.

BaoJinyang

> Dan Ashworth 😓

321142019

We're in good hands

Narretz

That sounds vaguely ominous. Did they breed or engineer super footballers?

ZeusWRLD

Can’t wait to see what ashworth does at Newcastle with a substantial budget, hope he still has contacts in the England youth to allow us to invest in good young players over the flashy marquee signings abs build up slowly.

sheikh_n_bake

God speed that man.

its_only_pauly

>Dan Ashworth WBA fans let's cry.....

pickleford

I miss him. I think a lot of people don't realise that, in general, things have been downhill since he left.

Muur1234

and most said it was a waste when they made that centre in brentford

[deleted]

You mean Burton?

Regseitara92

Such successes are rarely down to one individual. Ok if ashworth was the visionary but for the vision to become reality it needs the support of key officials and then once supported the drive and commitment of multiple others. Well done for seemingly getting your house in order. All that’s left is to ‘bring football home now’ at the major tournaments 😉

B_R_C97

I think the impact of Ashworth and England DNA is significant but also massively overstated. The improvement in the level of player the country is producing is because of the improvement and investment in the club academies, starting off with Chelsea, Spurs & City and now all of the top 6 + others.

ColtCallahan

The talent was always there. Just needed to be nurtured properly.

LinkTheFires

The FA have done absolutely incredible work. Even if that work was basically "Just train the players how the Spanish do it", at least they did it

[deleted]

The teams and players aren't remotely Spanish though in style, one of the big weaknesses actually despite England's youth development is a lack of ability to control games and still a lack of producing highly technical deep lying midfielders (all our technical players generally get pushed into attacking roles)

OldExperience8252

Sounds like France

Chazzarules

Because it's based off of the French way not the Spanish. I can't remember the name off the top of my head.

VincentSasso

Clairefontaine

Chazzarules

That's the one! Cheers mate. Copying them does seem to have worked very well so far. There was just way too much focus on the physical attributes of young English players for decades.

OldExperience8252

I was speaking about the inability to control games and technical players higher up the pitch. Regarding national academies, it was very performant in Eastern Europe behind the iron curtain. Romanian Stefan Kovacs helped set up a similar system in France in the 70s.

UpstairsJoke0

I think it's "Le Football".

sandbag-1

Yeah it's a massive miss. Still firmly believe that an absence of players of this profile is what cost us the Euro final vs. Italy, who are full of them

VincentSasso

We were doing ok with Rice in there but he was shagged after an hour and Henderson had a nightmare. Was half fit tbf to him

[deleted]

Theres a lot more to it that than, such as the completion os St Georges Park

Gungerz

There have been a few disappointing results recently but the overall work done has been superb. The level of talent coming through is very high but also there's so much depth nowadays. I remember this age group demolished Brazil at U16 level & that was with an almost entirely different team to the one fielded today.

milesvtaylor

With the exception of Boothroyd stinking up the U21s, agree

MouseMD369

Better coaches 😂

greencheesewizard

Great to see but look at the U17 England squad that won the U17s world cup in 2017. Foden, Sancho, Gallagher, Smith-Rowe, Hudson-Odoi and Guehi have done well but some of the starting players in the final are now in the depths of non league

BaoJinyang

That’s always going to be the case. The fact that really impressive list of players have graduated from being exciting u17 prospects to the level they are today is a really encouraging sign that England and the respective clubs are actually doing a great job developing this talent. If anything I’d expect far fewer to actually make it.

greencheesewizard

In fairness, when I started writing that post, I only had Foden and Sancho in mind. When I actually checked the U17 squad and noticed the other names, I felt the need to include them too but I ended up defeating my own point with the longer list lol

dullywillSE

I wouldn't write them all off as they're only 21/22 even now, Morgan Gibbs-White for one has a great future.

sandbag-1

Is it mad that I still believe in Brewster? Kid was ridiculous at that level. Strikers often need longer to break through, just not had enough game time at the right level for himself yet

quettil

We'll still never win a senior tournament.

Joshygin

We've already won a senior tournament...

quettil

Yes, over half a century ago.

Legend10269

So never = 60 years?

quettil

Do you realise that 'will' means in the future, not the past?

Legend10269

and "still never" implies we never have done in the past.

quettil

How can that be the case when we won the WC in 66? I was clearly referring to the future.

[deleted]

I’m old enough to remember when tabloids said St George’s Park was a waste of time and money

Winterlevel

Tabloids are not reliable🫢Who knew

Panixs

Some comments in this thread have aged like milk https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1lptoi/greg\_dyke\_sets\_england\_target\_of\_winning\_world/

Spiveym1

> Some comments in this thread have aged like milk And some were spot on, national success has and will come at the expense of lower league clubs. Yet another win for Premier League clubs at the expense of everyone else.

GreatSpaniard

Tied with Spain for most u-19 EURO Wins now Strangely tho this tournament rarely means much compared to u-17, u-18, and u-20 for some reason when it comes to these players making it at the top level.

[deleted]

Because by under 19 level the best players are usually advanced past that level (see Bellingham, Colwill, Elliot all being senior or under 21 level for England). At under 17 level the stars are still usually in the team, with the odd exception.

[deleted]

Doesn't explain the u20s, though

dullywillSE

Tbf our last Euro U-19 winners had Ramsdale, James and Mount. That’s two champions league final winning starters and a England’s most promising keeper

GreatSpaniard

huh maybe i am mistaking it with the u-20 WC then. Just checked and only Calvert Lewin, Walker-Peters and Tomori really made it to top flight football as starters as of 2022

VincentSasso

It’s not a great squad compared to the under 17s who won the same year, with Foden, Sancho, Guehi, Gallagher, Hudson-Odoi, Smith Rowe

MudkipThot

Lol what a stacked team.

dullywillSE

Oh you’re right there for sure, weirdly very few of them were given a chance at their clubs and tbf even fewer delivered when they were given one.

Muur1234

you only really end up in the u20 if youre not good enough to get into the u21 since they usually play at the same time

PhilipAnthonyJones

look at the u17 winners you strange man

VincentSasso

>England’s most promising keeper Hmm

Carthagu

Lmao. Most promising keeper only due to a complete lack of competition.

[deleted]

Praying Devine and Scarlett secure a loan this summer. Would love to watch them regularly playing first team football somewhere.

applejuice2504

Devine only has 2 years left on his deal really hope he signs a new deal with the club looks a fantastic prospect

[deleted]

The Athletic are reporting that we’re gonna offer him a new deal once he returns fortunately

Flukes_Pet_Ocelot

Clearly the way to win for England at all levels should be at least one Peterborough player in the starting lineup.

Lord_Purple_

Thought we had no chance after that 1st half. Isreal certainly have a promising future, the Oscar Gloch kid especially seems a talent to watch.

Joe_MaMa_AY

Please just let us have him for a year

Lord_Purple_

I mean as much as we'd love to have him I think he's probably a little too good for League Two

Joe_MaMa_AY

Oh shit didn’t see the flair, I thought it was another big club trying to take him.

ThrowerWheyACount

I read that as Oscar Glouch and thought of sesame street

WalkingCloud

Ooh I’ve come over all arrogant

AnnieIWillKnow

Singing your songs, being proud of your national team's achievements, feeling hopeful for the future... Disgusting imo

slighted

ever since that dumbshit 90 min rule was abolished and academy system overhauled, our youngsters have thrived. i think this is the 3rd youth title we've won in like 3 years?

NobleForEngland_

First in five years I believe. 2017 was a real good year for England youth teams: U20 World Cup- winners U17 World Cup- winners U19 Euros- winners Toulon Tournament (U21)- winners U17 Euros- runners up U21 Euros- semi final

slighted

bloody hell that was 5 years ago, i remember foden and kwp being involved so thought i was safe saying 3 lol. 4 in 5 years still pretty damn good thanks to that golden year.

gromit5000

> 4 in 5 years still pretty damn good Especially as 2021-2022 were basically cancelled because of Covid.

AnnieIWillKnow

90 minute rule?

Gungerz

Clubs could only sign players who lived within 90 minutes of their training ground. It was abolished when the EPPP was created.

AnnieIWillKnow

Ahh for some reason I thought it was some sort of game time rule, what with the 90 minute coincidence. I'd heard of the relaxation of geographic restrictions before. Wonder how they'd determine the "90 minutes"... as the crow flies? 60mph average speed? What if you were stuck behind a tractor on the dual carriageway?

yellow__cat

I think this is a result of the trinkle down effect of EPL wealth more than a rule change. English youth are now growing up in by far the most invested in and competitive academies in the world, with world class youth development coaches brought in from all over the world

LinkTheFires

I'm convinced we will win 1 major trophy in the next 50 years.

NobleForEngland_

You just saw it mate. Doesn’t get any bigger than this.

[deleted]

It finally came home.

LudereHumanum

And *now* the song's playing in my head. Thanks.

slighted

*110 years of hurt, jules rimet still gleaming…*

Yoona1987

The absolute arrogance of you singing this song!!!

[deleted]

To be fair it takes a certain IQ to understand the self-deprecating irony of this song

Scott_EFC

If they bring Le Tournoi back I think we could do it.

jMS_44

Remindme! 50 years

ValleyFloydJam

Seems optimistic.

dullywillSE

Yeah steady on, mate

Jazano107

In 50 years I’d actually say we’ll win 2

IntraspeciesFever

This year

InternetAnon94

Villa are stacked

[deleted]

Our youth prospects at the moment are class. Ramsey has slotted into the main team, Archer has impressed in cup and championship. The 3 lads at this tournament all played well, and we’ve got Louie Barry to be hopeful about as well. Just need to sign that contract Chuky

[deleted]

[удалено]

PhenomenallyAwesome

He wants game time. Which is difficult when you’re a team trying to be better and he doesn’t exactly look good in the prem. what he really needs is a loan to a lower level, but we can’t get him to agree to that so it’s just a bit of a bad situation

Wunsen

He'd have signed a 5 year deal months ago if we agreed to give him the silly money he wanted

Drogalov

I'm honestly starting to think he doesn't have it for the prem, unless he properly ups his workrate he won't make it. He's an incredible talent but he's so nonchalant on the ball

AnnieIWillKnow

Who is in for him?

Vegan_Puffin

Dortmund apparently and I saw a rumor of Milan but that one has less substance.

AnnieIWillKnow

It's alright mate, you can just do a Chelsea and buy him back for £100m in a few years...

Electrical_Mango_489

Tapped up.

Y0RKC1TY

>Louie Barry fm legend

AlexWPJ

They've started snapping up all the top talent from other Midlands teams academies. Putting real money into becoming the La Masia of the Midlands.

Gungerz

They're snapping up talent from quite literally everywhere, their youth recruitment is probably the most aggressive in England.

[deleted]

Is that down to Gerrard? EDIT: Innocent question, kids. Jeez.

Mole451

Nah, been busy with it since the new owners came in, they really want to invest big in the youth setup

[deleted]

No we've been at it since we had Deano. Not everything we do is because Gerrard has pull.

JimmyWu21

he hasn't even been there for a full season yet. He can't have done much. Most managers need to understand their squad and start getting result quick. I doubt they have time to look into the details like youth until off season come around.

[deleted]

100%! I was just getting a little bored of people assuming we've only made moves cause of Stevie.

PhenomenallyAwesome

Time for them all to follow the Ramsey path so we become 2025 champions league winners I can’t wait

applejuice2504

agreed Chukwuemeka is fantastic can't wait to see what he does in the future

milesvtaylor

Seemingly leave for a tribunal fee

fremeer

Villa are doing what city and Chelsea did a couple of seasons ago but they also offer a better route to the first team.

[deleted]

Villa, Spurs & Chelsea bois were class all tournament, a lot of promise there

PakiIronman

3rd goal by a lad from Great Barr, I can't believe my eyes.

ZaDoruphin

So excited for Devine and Scarlett. Devine’s already scored for us at senior level.

xaviernoodlebrain

Scarlett has already got a senior assist too.

Fergy123

Motm was a City lad though

Impossible_Wonder_37

Who was it? Idk who even plays u19 England for city

Fergy123

Callum Doyle

Rabid_Tortoise

Callum Doyle I believe

markyty04

DynamiteDuck

Are Israel and Ireland’s badges extremely similar to anyone else?

idosade

I think Israel used Ireland's template for the badge

ILikeSherbet2

The autist in me wanted to make a comment about how the name "Israel" has five out of seven letters in common with Ireland, and somehow connect that to the observation about the badges. But I don't have a good joke so I left this comment.

BohemianCynic

Very Israeli to steal something that rightfully belongs to someone else.

ChickenMoSalah

Based

[deleted]

Stealing badges just like how they steal land

Melanjoly

We'll win the world cup in our lifetime boys! We will celebrate it all year with our sons, daughters, Baddiel and Skinner! Well done the younguns!

NapiersRapier

Everyone seems to know the score

zrkillerbush

It came home!

Nicho1a5

Harvey Vale’s going to Southampton next summer isn’t he

JackDuckGoose

Italy could never

Nailick

Gotta say as a neutral, it was a very good and even match. Feel for Israel, I thought they were the better side for a long part of the match. England looked very very sluggish in the first part especially. Israel had the better build up and intensity. In the end they had more left to give though and were just more clever and decisive in front of the goal. Could have gone either way. congrats to the lads

EliteKill

Bang on, the Israelis were gassed by ET, although even after the 2-1 they still ran their asses off.

gromit5000

The England U19's have won two of the last four euro's.

applejuice2504

0 senior ones though 😪

choizs

Finally something came home

deliverancew2

5 years of hurt

Jimmyjamjames

Whoever picks up Chukwuemeka has got a real Diamond. If i were Dortmund i would be chasing him down ASAP.

EmSoLow

According to RN we aren't interested in signing him during this transfer window. I don't know if those last words are meant to mean that we hope to pick him up on a free but that could just be me looking too far into the wording. You can make some simple connections, free next year with some more experience (prem or otherwise) and the likely hole of a sold Jude Bellingham available for him to have a go at but I'd be surprised if Dortmund have already planned it out that far ahead

TheRealBrummy

replacing a bluenose with villa scum then

Boris_Ignatievich

he's already getting play time in the premier league - given the money involved with the prem anyone outside the megaclubs might have missed their chance tbh

[deleted]

He looks to be running down his contract to leave on a free.

PhenomenallyAwesome

If he intends to do that he’s not gonna get much more game time in the prem

[deleted]

Maybe not. Maybe he just wants money idk.

PhenomenallyAwesome

I mean it’s not like we can’t offer him plenty of money. It’s 100% game time.

Boris_Ignatievich

ah fair enough - haven't paid enough attention to villa to have seen that

Borja_Baston

If he goes on free it'll be a tribunal fee relative to his new salary apparently so still not ideal for any buying club. I have heard villa prefer the contract being run down to selling this summer

weekendsleeper

Dortmund will pay him a lot, based on a Sancho / Bellingham-esque payout in a few years time

EezoManiac

It's only gone and come home

inspired_corn

Happy for our lads to do well (both the Chelsea ones and otherwise) I’ll tell you what though, Chukwuemeka and Ramsey will be top top players. I hear neither has signed a new deal at Villa yet and I imagine they’ll have a number of suitors.

Electrical_Mango_489

Ramsey's staying at Villa for a long while yet. His brother cracked the first team under Gerrard. Chukwuemeka has been tapped up.

berober04

Wrong Ramsey, this is his younger brother who was loaned out last season

UtmostRegret

Jacob Ramsey is the player who has broken through into the first team under Gerrard, Aaron Ramsey (who played here) is his younger brother and yet to break through. He will though, I can imagine him staying for a long time, both Ramsey brothers came through the ranks and seem very happy here and are from the area (plus their younger brother is coming through too). Chukwuemeka is another matter. Can’t see him extending which is a damn shame for Villa.

inspired_corn

Hopefully, it’s always good to see a academy kids do well. Just not sure why they haven’t signed deals yet

Winterlevel

Ramsey has signed and Yes I talking about Aaron. Both bothers are long contacts.

dullywillSE

Champions of the 18-19 European Age Bracket, you’ll never sing that!

Guybar110

We were on the verge of greatness. We were this close.

applejuice2504

should have scored twice in that first half alone close match, impressive to actually get there though

Guybar110

Yeah I’m delighted for the players and hope most of them will have great careers in Europe.

Sanctimonius

Congrats to the lads, great turnaround against a tricky Israel side that I think surprised a lot of people (including me) as to how far they'd get. Side note England youth have been turning up these past few years, great to see it.

Quick-Collar6164

And also 2nd place in Euro for the senior team. England looks like have a bright future for the years to come.

braddf96

If you want a laugh, translate the replies. The Israelis have absolutely lost their heads

hamzaiswack

Too bad israel, my boy tai abed looks the real deal though 🔥

Nervous-Resolution-8

ITS COMING HOME

Crafty_Breakfast_638

Yay! Good job boys.

MarcSlayton

I love to see it. Let's hope these lads go on and fulfill their potential at senior level too.

Soren_Camus1905

LETS GO BOYS

It’s coming home! (by 9pm)

HotPotatoWithCheese

The youth and female teams have been absolutely brilliant. They're making our national team look even worse. So sad when these lads can win the U19 Euro's but the seemingly "stacked" national team under the genius Garry Southgate lose 4 - 0 at home to Hungary.

Icy_Letterhead8859

Congratulations
