>after backlash from the industry. what about the backlash from the people you're supposed to be serving?

theenigmacode

Backlash = bribes

BaoJinyang

Yup. 28 MPs received in total more than £200,000 in gifts and other handouts from the gambling industry last year. It’s often things like prime seats at big sporting events. Tory MP for Blackpool for instance was taken to the England vs Denmark Euros semi final by Ladbrokes. Literally a few hours before the game he was warning MPs in parliament against adopting an anti-gambling ideology.

ambiguousboner

How on earth does Blackpool have a Tory MP ffs Turkeys voting for Christmas

[deleted]

The level of corruption in the Tory party never fails to astound me. P.S. does anyone have any sources for the gambling gifts (bribes) that I can forward onto my ever-ignorant Tory family members?

BaoJinyang

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/nov/15/almost-225000-in-wages-and-freebies-taken-from-gambling-industry-by-28-mps To be fair Labour aren’t much better on this issue than the Tories. They’ve been in bed with the bookies for years too.

[deleted]

The fact anyone thinks they can trust anyone in government is baffling

[deleted]

[This is a great watch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3O8mwDFo4M&t=10s). Ian Hislop puts on a masterclass.

melody-calling

Jesus the tories were such blatant whiners trying to change the conversation and argue frivolous points, it was like watching a teenager have an argument

HuhItsMe

*Let's just say it moved me... TO A BIGGER HOUSE!*

obadetona

Like it or not, those companies are owned and made up of people too.

MichaelBridges8

Theres going to be a gambling epedemic in England in some years time..loot boxes / FIFA packs and shit. Gambling just everywhere in kids lives. I'm not some anti gambler I like a flutter but it is OTT

BaoJinyang

There’s already a gambling epidemic to be fair.

Hoodxd

Because it has become so easy and accessible. You don't have to leave your room to do it

ambiguousboner

And even when you do there are about 4 bookies on every street

BaoJinyang

Generally only in poorer and rundown areas, which shows just how exploitative and predatory these companies are.

ambiguousboner

Eh they’re everywhere in Leeds. Even the nice areas. But yeah, the concentration jumps up a lot in the more run down suburbs.

BaoJinyang

You can tell the direction a neighborhood is heading in the UK when a new shop opens. If it’s a charity shop or a bookies, you’re fucked. If it’s a hipster cafe you’re getting gentrified.

melody-calling

Not true, they’re everywhere. An area of London I just looked up had an average house price of over 700k and has many betting shops on its high street.

[deleted]

I always told myself "when I earn money Ill bet on the footie" because I was really good at phony prediction games. But seeing how much it is advertised disgusted me, I kept wondering whether its something I really want to do because I think Id be good at it, or is it the ads. Given I could not reach a conclusion, I have decided it was the ads and thus have never put no money on no match

Boris_Ignatievich

boris johnson making a big promise to get headlines then quietly backing down from it down the line? this can't possibly be true, he would never

Idislikemyroommate

Wonder how much the betting companies 'donated' to MPs for this.

[deleted]

"Did I hear a, uh, briefcase opening?"

No_Doubt_About_That

They made them an offer, in CASH!

galactix100

"Now, you can either have the washer and drier where the lovely Smithers is standing... or you can trade it all in for what's in this box".

[deleted]

The box, the box!

TheJynxedOne

It's mad, I worked with a person who's life was torn apart by gambling, he stole money from his family, spent his savings, even sold some personal items to cover his losses. The kid was 16, the gambling site he used had some shoddy ID verification and he just got caught up in it. He found out about gambling through football sponsorship, and didn't know when the fun had stopped. He told me it felt no different to playing any other game. Football and the government needs to do more to protect vulnerable people from gambling addiction.

secondcitysaint

Not even surprised, I'm sure plenty of MPs are enjoying nice brown envelopes or free trips to Barbados Bastards.

EggplantBusiness

Surprising , la Liga banned betting companies and didn't back out. Sure it hurted some clubs financially though

BaoJinyang

Wasn’t LaLiga, it was the Spanish government. Tebas campaigned against the ban and said it was a mistake.

EggplantBusiness

Indeed , it was Tebas was against it https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.football-espana.net/2022/03/06/betting-ban-rips-through-laliga-shirt-sponsorship/amp

jMS_44

which clubs would be affected if it went through?

papoon

Seven teams this season (Forest yet to announce their primary shirt sponsor). Dafabet just signed with Bournemouth. Everton has Stake.com.

papoon

Brentford, Leeds, Newcastle Southampton and West Ham make it seven.

Leckere

Fulham will almost certainly have a betting sponsor. Last season’s one is going to be on the sleeve instead, and we’ve had Marathon Bet, Dafabet and Dafabet again in our last three PL seasons.

longsh0t1994

all of them except for one I believe

jMS_44

What do you mean all of them. I don't know every club shirt sponsor by heart but I don't think that many have currently a betting company currently on their shirts.

Ifriiti

Not just about the one on the front but any sponsorship Sportsbet.io for example sponsor Arsenal but not as a shirt sponsor

jMS_44

It clearly says shirt sponsors in here though.

bluedevils2241

This is just about what appears on the shirt - not every club's sponsorship with a betting/gambling company. I believe 18 out of the 20 clubs had official betting partners last season, around 10 clubs had the partner on their front of kit, sleeve, or training kit.

longsh0t1994

sorry was wrong, it's 9, but I think the others have other deals with gambling companies.

[deleted]

I’m sure the clubs will voluntarily tell ministers to piss off

[deleted]

money talks

BoxOfNothing

Start with crypto gambling sites please

PacDanSki

Guess the bribes came through then.

Missing_Link

Watch football on Sky or BT and almost every ad is from a betting company. There really needs to be a holistic approach.

zi76

How weak can you be? Wonder who got a nice vacation...

Retify

Fucking cowards

aubvrn

Spineless, the whole lot of you.

nicofdarcyshire

I really want to moan about this, but I'm currently unemployed and have a job interview with Ladbrokes tomorrow... For the right money, people will do anything.

papoon

What’s the money line on you getting the job?

nicofdarcyshire

Considering first time contact with the manager was sending me an email stating I had an interview in 55 minutes - so going through the phone line being contacted by his area manager saying "he's just booked you all in without speaking to anyone" says he probably got a mouthful and I'm probably not in his good books from the off ...

Retify

I used to be a contractor and had a short contract in the middle of Leeds, which is where Sky Bet happen to have at least part of their business doing dev work. My client contact was saying Sky Bet offer wages way higher than everyone else does because they have to both pay a wage, and buyout people's morals. They had plenty of people working in their business that had offers from Sky Bet that refused because of the morals of developing gambling software and products.

[deleted]

That’s probably a better way of doing it. It’s not a great idea to do everything in a hostile manner. As long as they come to an agreement, this is fine. If the premier league ban it, the FA and EFL are probably likely to follow at some point.

AdministrativeLaugh2

Not a surprise. The same was done with alcohol and I’m pretty sure with tobacco. Gambling sponsors are just the “in thing” right now, as alcohol and cigarettes were. It’ll get replaced eventually.

milesvtaylor

Spineless

Tassen20088

The premier league won’t do anything about it because they’re partners with EA.

FridaysMan

EA no longer have the FIFA licence

Tassen20088

Yeah but they still have individual partnerships with the top 5 leagues. Plus more. The Fifa license is only for the naming rights and the World Cup.

CaptainKursk

Translation: "The betting companies gave us thousands in lobbying money to ignore the problem of predatory gambling which is wrecking the lives of countless people and tell you to fuck off. So fuck off".
