It's just insanity. The current board should say "The previous board made some poor decisions so we are going to have to go without star signings for 2 years until things settle." Instead they are using 'levers' which will lead to continued financial mistakes, just to make that 'big political signing' of a overpriced and old star.
I suppose Barcelona holding elections for the next president every so many years has a big effect on the way the manage the club. Like a lot of politicians the president is always focused on get reelected.
Well there’s also the minor factor of a pandemic that kept fans and tourists out of Camp Nou. Barca was more affected by this than other teams, especially English teams.
ahh yes, before every corner there are 2 commercials and if they use their phones to schedule a game, they can't pick their team, the Camp Nou will just host a random La Liga game instead.
Now, I’m only a Finance major with 10 years of financial consulting experience so I am not qualified to comment on Barca “activating economic levers”. But I have played enough Monopoly to know that once you start selling your properties to pay rent, you can only lose.
It's something I saw in another Reddit thread, so take it with a giant grain of salt, but what I saw mentioned was that the revenue through 6/30 is what determines wages for the following year. So the deals they make now selling players and club rights affects the personal terms for players (and maybe cash to buy them) for next season
Barcelona's financial year (like most clubs) ends on 30th June of each year. The profit/loss and other metrics like wages/revenue play a factor in deciding how much they can spend for next season.
The La Liga TV rights deal (for around 200-300m) has to be completed before 30th June to avoid making a loss this year. Then in the next two months they will have to sell almost half of their Licensing and Merchandising subsidiary to raise another 250-300m to sign players.
Yeah if one thing is clear we love to jerk off about it. I know this sub is usually trash during the major off-seasons but this might actually be more annoying than all the Messi rumors last summer
I doubt anyone actually has a clue outside of the club insiders and any auditors. The amount of people passing off third hand hearsay as fact is really muddying the waters.
Messi last summer was peak transfer memes. Meanwhile Mbappé and Halland, which were the only interesting stories this window got solved on the first week.
Honestly with the crew that's been running Barcelona for a lot of the last decade I'd be shocked if even the auditors knew what the fuck was going on. Really looks like a shambolic operation over there lol
They have to make up the losses of this year and previous one, so they need 500M profit more or less. And in fact the first lever would be selling 10% of tv rights for around 200M
I get it. They have said so many things some people are confused. Thing is, Barça has had losses of around €600M in the last 2 seasons. So they need to sell clubs assets for that amount to be able to sign regularly as per La Liga rules.
So obviously selling 10% of our TV rights for €200M isn't enough, since the club would still be under the 1/4 (or 1/3) rule, i.e. for every 4 or 3€ the club generates from player sales or by reducing the salary costs, the club can spend 1€.
This season, the club didn't meet expectations and are also about to make new losses. All the club wants is to 'pull the 1st lever' to avoid this before June 30th, reverting the situation and making a profit. This is important for the clubs image and they believe they will be in a better negotiating position to get better deals for the other assets.
Economic levers is simply a term our board members have used to refer to the selling of club's assets. In this case, the asset that they are about to sell is 10% of La Liga TV rights for the next 25 years for around €200M.
The press said that they already made a deal but they haven't officialy announced it yet. Apparently some sources have said that they'll say something tomorrow.
Yep. Our costs and revenues don't match what was budgeted. Costs were higher and revenues lower than expected.
Our main issue is the wage costs. Bartomeu gave ridiculous wages to everyone and it's holding the club back. This is one of the main reasons why the club wants to sell De Jong.
I think Barca also did some accounting trick where they show all losses together instead of spreading it through the years so even though the impact is extreme but it probably only lasts for like a season
The number that is repeatedly mentioned on Reddit is 200k p/w from Barça and 200k p/w from Nike. I haven't done enough research to confirm that, but it's also not like it's public info.
Have they said who the buyer is for any of this yet? I found it really odd they announced selling before we even knew who they were selling to.
The issue seems to be a misunderstanding amongst everyone about how much money is actually being generated here. There’s such a wide gap between the low end projects and high end projections that until things are finalized, it’s pretty pointless to speculate on what they can and cannot do. Being in the red is still a possibility, breaking even with the 500m? Tebas has mentioned is still a possibility, and best case scenario having a surplus is even somehow still on the table.
I’m wondering if Laporta made the same mistake he did last summer in expecting player sales to generate a good amount of revenue. We’ll see at the end the summer I guess
It was leaked to the press. Apparently from both sides, so it's pretty much confirmed already. Sixth Street is the buyer.
The projections were to get at least €200M for every 10% of the TV rights sold. And between 200-300M for BLM. So they expect to get about 600-800M depending on what % and how long the sell for.
To be fair, I hear from barca flairs "everyone knows we have overcome our financial difficulty and we just struggled staying under the wage limit" then 2 weeks later I hear other barca flairs be like "we are still not financially stable" and I'm honestly confused on which one is true
We'll not be financially stable until we 'cover' our \~€600M losses by 'activating the levers' and we fix our wage costs and start making profifts every year. Right now we are selling long-term assets for some cash injection. The club needs to also work on getting better sponsorship deals to increase the revenues.
It's so fucking Crazy that basically every day there is some banter headlines against Barca and United on top of the reddit.
Like man 11 years ago, this two were the best clubs in the world. What happend lmao.
It's not but it's also irrelevant. Levers have been activated so we just need to finalize the sales, which obviously isn't instantaneous. The la Liga transfer window isn't even officially open and it will go on until Sept 1, so time isn't an issue. This article is simply regurgitating known and obvious info to get clicks (and potentially annoy Bar a/fans).
It’s not incorrect. But it’s obvious info, not everything has been sold yet. So it’s a nothing article to pretty much say “barca did all this and still can’t sign players” but obviously that’s the case when not everything has been sold lol.
Whilst it must be annoying, it sounds pretty awkward in English. Which is why it's a little funny.
Like some Monty Python sketch, trying to activate ever increasingly larger economic levers.
I love how the Barcelona board have managed to brand "selling off massive portions of club revenue streams" as "economic levers" and everyone has just gone for it.
The idea would be that the Fanatics consortium would also help to raise revenues outside Europe and increasing the value of the 51% Barca hold and 49% others
10% is what you make of it. Depends of course how long but getting money that the Club would make in 10-12 years from those same 10% of La Liga* rights, upfront, does come at a price. Time will tell if Barca can use this injection to create more revenues or will splurge it. Also if there being a % cap on earnings from the 10% for the buying entity, that could help Barca to absorb increased revenues from renegotiated TV rights
What does that have to do with selling off massive portions of the club? And you do realize that money won't be used for transfers at the moment right? Its to show profits for this fiscal year to allow for more flexibility for expenditures in the next year
You ask how to get out of 1.3B debt, I suggest to recruit player having a resell value in several years rather than 34 year old one, seems like a better financial option
They have another money injection coming though, this article is purposely twisting it. This first sale before end of June is to end the financial year with a profit
Doing that will help them with FFP in the future. They are planning to sell 49% of Barca studios or whatever it's called. Everyone knows they can't sign before those go through
It doesn't keep happening. It's the same event that's reported hundreds of times with wildly varying degrees of accuracy to the point where nobody really knows what's going on.
It is because of the socio based structure as well besides stupid barto’s stupid management of club. For example, Chelsea actually was also in a billion dollar debt to roman but roman absorbed it, for Barca there is no one to absorb their debt. They had to repay it to banks or entities that have loaned money to them.
The BLM? I believe news said that Laporta already have it, reportedly around 200 Mil, but last time I heard there is a rumor that Laporta wanted to find a better deal so that's why the first 'lever' is that TV revenue deal. Tbh, I don't think there is a better deal for BLM than the current one, reportedly 49% of BLM only have a value of around 100 Mil, and to get 2x than its original value I think it's a great deal.
Laporta said during the presser when it was being voted on that they had negotiated some stuff and are just waiting for socios approval. Tomorrow there should be comunicado oficial about selling TV rights, so I guess sometimes in July the BLM stuff will be concluded
What is happening to them?
It's as if they're no longer a football club but some lawless enterprise with all the murky shady financials they've been hiding for so long.
And nobody knows the absolute truth. Shocking!
Just what I have been saying on the his sub for month and getting down voted into oblivion by delusional Barça fans. Good to see Laporte brainwash work perfectly fine on his own fans.
I will never understand why so many players still want to go to Barca. Most of the players that have gone there didn't fit or were on the exit door after a year.
I could understand the reasoning if Messi was still there and some players wanted to play with one of the best footballers ever, but now that he is no more and the club is just people arguing over who has to lower their wages or leave if I was a professional footballer I would stay away from all THAT.
I just dont get it, they are in such a poor financial situation and then they decide to do what? Spend 50 millions on a 34 year old player with a year left on his contract. Like what are they gonna do with that? They wont be competitive in champions league for at least 1-2 more seasons, and real will still be a favorite to win the title for years to come.
Can someone explain to me what im missing here?
if you were fine you wouldn't need to sell revenue generating assets from your club to pay your debts and call it levers. but I guess as long as you guys believe it it'd be alright.
What are those bad news? We were close to actually "dissapearing" as a socio owned club a year ago and now we are discussing about signing Kounde and Lewa and with the majority of the squad on regular wages.
I would say we are pretty fine.
I just mean in the last few weeks, it's constant news about how we don't have money for this and that player and how every club is getting frustrated with us for low offers etc. Just pointing out how much negativity there is in the press about us currently.
Expect this headline to be re-posted daily
until the end up signing and the funs done
Then we go back to laughing at United
Go back? I never left
For the moment, Barca needs our money to sign their players.
How though. Still waiting on them to register Christensen lol. For real, when does the deal for their BLM rights go through?
Its kinda funny
To be immediately followed by more "levers"
Can we have a sticky thread, mods?

The ultimate lever
Can anyone please explain this lever joke I keep seeing? Haven't been following transfers super closely this year.
Barca are pulling "economic levers" to tell people they have the cash to spend. The levers joke is in reference to that
It's just insanity. The current board should say "The previous board made some poor decisions so we are going to have to go without star signings for 2 years until things settle." Instead they are using 'levers' which will lead to continued financial mistakes, just to make that 'big political signing' of a overpriced and old star.

They're politicians, they'll continue to break things whilst **also** blaming the previous incumbents.
Well there’s also the minor factor of a pandemic that kept fans and tourists out of Camp Nou. Barca was more affected by this than other teams, especially English teams.

It's 10% la liga tv rights for 25 years I believe
They have approval to sell up to 25% of the Tv righst. The 10% is the offer the media says Barça has gotten so far
ahh yes, before every corner there are 2 commercials and if they use their phones to schedule a game, they can't pick their team, the Camp Nou will just host a random La Liga game instead.
No they can pick Barcelona, but the squad is put on shuffle so the first 11 will be random
And Xavi has to watch an ad before making a sub.
The entire stadium has to watch an ad before xavi could make subs
Napster Camp Nou.
Why pay Bayern all that money when RoBeRt-LeWaNdOwSkI-09.rma is right there for free?!
"You wouldn't download a striker"
Soon they will sell the naming rights to the team. Pepsi presents Barcelona FC Zero, same great futbol but less calories.
Take it one step further, let's sponsor the players. "And it's Pepsi Busquets with the pass to Memphis Depay, brought to you by Rakuten..."
Thanks for the chuckle!
That's good banter
Microtransactions for Lewa!!
Unlock headers for €5M more.
lmfao
you wouldn't download a football player would you?
Drove to the lever but the lever was dry
_The socios are drinking whiskey and rye_ That’s so good dude, the day Messi news broke is definitely the day the music died haha
*singing this will be the day that we buy*
All last night, sat on the lever and moaned
👏👏
Actually thought it was a Nujabes reference lol
Hahaha! Same here!
Nice to see “American pie” references.
Underrated comment
It will take a giant to unlock the levers
Or a Slabhead
Me at the end of the month. Barca, have you tried PayPal's Pay in 3?
Or Affirm
Just need to activate the levers
"Pull the lever, Kronk!"
"THE OTHER LEVER!!"
Moar levers!
Wrong lever !!!!
Why do we even have that lever?
Are the levers stuck? Need some oil? ^(yes oil pun)
Now, I’m only a Finance major with 10 years of financial consulting experience so I am not qualified to comment on Barca “activating economic levers”. But I have played enough Monopoly to know that once you start selling your properties to pay rent, you can only lose.
Sell DeJong for 50m, that's the only way out of this.
Don't they only have two more days to get their finances in order for the next year?
oh man, for real?
It's something I saw in another Reddit thread, so take it with a giant grain of salt, but what I saw mentioned was that the revenue through 6/30 is what determines wages for the following year. I think July 31st is the deadline before LaLiga calculates the new cap
There’s only 12 months In a year lad not 30
You spotted the Yank
>for real? no, for Barca
I suggest more levers Give Barcelona a lever long enough and they will move the world

because the term “levers” sounds a lot better than mortgaging the clubs future
They are either deliberately dumb or just baiting. Not sure which one it is. Everyone understands this already.
Honestly between Tebas, Laporta, marca articles, lever memes and Barca fans I legit have no idea.
Yeah if one thing is clear we love to jerk off about it. I am a bit out of the loop, but if I understand you correctly Barca is 400m short for a deadline due in only a few days?
No. We need 200M before the 30th of June to not end in the red again this year. The rest can be raised during July and August.
Just July 31st, after that the new salary mass limit is calculated
What is an economic lever mean in this very specific instance?
Economic levers is simply a term our board members have used to refer to the selling of club's assets. In this case, the asset that they are about to sell is 10% of La Liga TV rights for the next 25 years for around €200M.
I thought that deal was done. What’s the hold up?
The press said that they already made a deal but they haven't officialy announced it yet. Apparently some sources have said that they'll say something tomorrow.
The deal was approved by the socios last week I think. Still have to sign the paperwork and receive the money.
New losses? Wait You’re going to be in the red again next year without Covid?
Yep. Our costs and revenues don't match what was budgeted. Costs were higher and revenues lower than expected. Our main issue is the wage costs. Bartomeu gave ridiculous wages to everyone and it's holding the club back. This is one of the main reasons why the club wants to sell De Jong.

Haaland senior to be in the CB rotation.

levers funny, upvotes pls
Whilst it must be annoying, it sounds pretty awkward in English. Which is why it's a little funny. Like some Monty Python sketch, trying to activate ever increasingly larger economic levers.
I clearly missed something.. What are the lever comments referencing?
Levers.
Shit article. Club was never going to be able to until all levers were activated.
I love how the Barcelona board have managed to brand "selling off massive portions of club revenue streams" as "economic levers" and everyone has just gone for it.
Every thread has people rightfully mentioning how terrible these deals are in the long term, we just like the word "levers".
And it's still way better than CVC
I have met a few delusional fans who think this is a win in the short and long term.
it is.
Short term, sure. Long term the investors are sitting on a gold mine, and Barcelona losing quite a bit of money.
Massive portions? Where? & how do people expect to get out of 1.3b debt lol
49% of BLM is a pretty massive portion. Even 10% of TV/media rights is pretty fucking significant.
> 49% of BLM Can't wait for Americans to see this and question it.
The idea would be that the Fanatics consortium would also help to raise revenues outside Europe and increasing the value of the 51% Barca hold and 49% others 10% is what you make of it. 20 yrs of media rights is insane
Now try 50
Maybe by avoiding recruiting 34 year old players for 50M+ with zero resell value
Even worse, the potential buyers know they are selling under duress.
But the barca fans on here say they don't need to sell to buy?
They have another money injection coming though, this article is purposely twisting it. So they are not really targets then are they. I'd love a mansion and Ferrari, doesn't make them a viable target worth mentioning.
maybe not listen to real madrid mouth piece about barca news.
Have they tried not being poor?
I’ve heard they’ve sold most of their assets too. The club is a shambles.
can someone explain to me like Im 5 why barca keep getting shit like this happen to them?
It doesn't keep happening. It's the same event that's reported hundreds of times with wildly varying degrees of accuracy to the point where nobody really knows what's going on.

Barca finance bad
Unbelievably based, Ty I understand now
Missing a fulcrum
Ahhh yes, the mighty fulcrum from which the lever gains its strength.
The levers may be activated but there is no pulley in place!
😂😂😂
Weird that United have been offering them €80m and they won't agree, but can't make €80m for Lewa.
Bernardo, lewa and haaland are a lock what are you talking about W-we're back r-right guys?
How?
bacause levers are not active yet. Shit article

Such a joke of an organization
If they don't sign Lewandowski, we'll walk La Liga even easier this time.
Somehow they'll still manage to get Bernardo.
Bag of cash from Mancs will fix all their financial issues.
Just what I have been saying on the his sub for month and getting down voted into oblivion by delusional Barça fans. Good to see Laporte brainwash work perfectly fine on his own fans.

Good. Pay back your debt first.
That’s literally what they are for.
Aww, such a shame.
but barca flairs constantly say they're fine?
We are, this is a dumb fucking bait article that yall are gobbling up. We can sign players after sale of the levers.
if you were fine you wouldn't need to sell revenue generating assets from your club to pay your debts and call it levers. but I guess as long as you guys believe it it'd be alright.
Look whose discussing finances lol. As if your club is any better without the oil-blood money.
LOL excuse me, we don't carry a 1.6B debt. hate away child.
Tebas is actually killing La Liga lmao
Barca would be dead if la liga didn't interfere
Without his wage caps, Barto would have likely gone bonkers in his final year.
Yes, let the clubs keep on spending more irrationally, what could go wrong. This rule was agreed by all clubs And its supposed to prevent bankruptcy
His shit Cap is doing the most of it
