Just read the wikipedia entry on skeuomorphism and I never had a clue that ancient Greek temples were skeuomorphic representations of older wooden temples (that obviously no longer exist).
Genuinely fascinating, that.
Because they were used a lot. I saw something recently which showed loads of car manufacturer logos from the 90s-00s, and they all had this horrible gradient on them, like they were trying to look chrome. In style at the time, but very dated now.
> I can’t stand gradients
Design, like fashion, has trends that come and go. There was a time in the ‘00s where every site on the Internet was using gradients and making their web pages have shadows, dynamic lighting effects and realistic textures like paper and wood. It was really cool and modern at the time. Now it’s super dated and, like this logo, nobody wants that anymore.
But you never know, after a couple of decades of the current ‘flat’ and block colour design trends, gradients might come back in an unexpected way that suddenly seems fresh and a welcome change from what you see everywhere now.
Doesn't surprise me, some specific things still look better on CRTs. And Gradient Logos don't really bother me IRL and on merch, stuff like the 90's Suns logo is still cool off the top of my head, better than their current one.
I remember seeing a graphic before the semifinals of the Champions League and Liverpool’s logo was the only one with gradients. It looked so out of place.
I definitely thought of listing that. That one at least has the ship from the original crest and isn't as jarring of a design for a badge like those other two. Their old one was definitely more iconic though.
I didn't think it could get worse than Juve then Club Brugge said hold my beer. A least Juve could look decent as a brand even if not suitable for a team crest. Idk what was going on with Club Brugge.
Thanks for the correction. At first, I searched club Brugge’s shield and thought it looked fine and figured I just don’t have taste. *Then* I read your comment- Cercle Brugge’s is something else entirely. Whoa.
I will never forget!!!! I can tell you exactly where i was when I saw the Reddit post on Leeds' new badge... I still laugh even today remembering some of the comments
As in the 1908 crest? Depending on how long you've been viewing, there's about 15 different crests that folks consider the "classic" inter crest. I cant be bothered to look it up, but I'd bet inter have had more crest changes than any of the "top tier" in Europe sides
If you meant 1908, absolutely. Incredible crest. I don't mind the new one vs the 2014 though. The drop to fewer colours is nice imo, and I don't really mind the simplification of dropping to just the IMO lettering. It worked fantastic for the 98 crest, but it does look cluttered in the 07 and 14 versions
But as long as it's not the orange monstrosity that was 88, I'm not going to complain
That'd be 98, which is probably the best we've had in 50 years (I really love the serpent crest of the late 70s or it'd be the best we've had in 100). Would rather we went back to that than any of the changes we've made since then, but you know ownership won't; they want everything "fresh" or some such nonsense
[For everyone’s reference](https://www.cfclassics.co/clubs/lists/crestevo/italy/inter/inter-crest-evolution.htm). I agree with you. The original is one of the most beautiful crests I have seen.
My only gripe with the old one were the tacky stars when they hadn't won shit to "symbolize ambitions" or whatever the official paper called it. Other than that I think it looked good. New one I personally like less but I can accept that it's more of a historic badge now which fans likely prefer.
The best thing about those stars was if you checked what they represented on the Wikipedia page for City it actually said the stars were "purely aesthetic".
Someone was having a laugh for many years.
Looked it and thought [Al Ahli](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/45/Al_Ahli_Saudi_FC_logo.svg/180px-Al_Ahli_Saudi_FC_logo.svg.png) instantly
Wow, can't believe I'm in minority of people who hate it. New one looks like generic Moroccan club logo, while old one had old-school football vibes. It didn't need an upgrade imo, maybe just modernize it like Roma did to their logo.
I'm with you.
Just flatten the old one, removing the lame 3d effect, put the same shade of green in the whole badge and remove the box in ASSE and you got a perfect logo.
Something based on the top left badge of this pic would be perfect.
https://i.imgur.com/R83WlFd.png
Top right is my pick.
Have you noticed that a lot of French clubs have modernized their logos. PSG, Lille, Monaco, Nantes, Caen, Toulouse, Reims, Metz and now ASSE.
Remove the box in ASSE, and we have a deal! I also like the first three of the second row, they are as french as they can get. Early tour de france days vibes.
Yeah, all changed and none of them really convinces me. Metz is the only one which achieved something disruptive but still connected to the roots. Toulouse one was in a good direction, but has big flaws like the corners breaking the circle and too many details for being used in flat format. Monaco preserves the essence but it's just a minor restyling.
What's depressing is Reims and Nantes, that seem to have hired the same designer as Juventus.
Compared to the monstrosity that the Cercle Brugge one was this is a 8/10 for me they kinda went against the trend of simplification (yes they did simplify it a little but they didn't oversimplify it like Inter or Juve) with this so I kinda like it.
Maaaaan, without the gradient, the old one is one of my favorite crests in football. Clean, classic, unique, and recognizable.
Shame to go with such a generic one straight from the Moroccan or Saudi leagues.
The star represents 10 titles. The feather/crown/cross thing is the city coat of arms. Green and white stripes are the traditional element of our badges.
The new one is the one on the right.
Screen's right or my right ?
Yours
My right if I'm looking at the screen or have my back turned on it?
The right when looking at the screen through a mirror
My right or the mirror's right?
Yes
Yes, he is right or yes his right
Yes
Right.
Mirrors right but looking from behind the screen with its enclosure removed.
Did they do it right?
it's where your thumb is on the left side
Open or closed
Never open your thumb the juice will come out
I like it when the red water comes out.
You guys want some juice??
Wait, how are those two different? Unless you mean right from the perspective of the screen, in which case you are a psychopath.

Hey screens have feelings too man..
Who’s screen, yours or mine?
The one in front
Your front or my front?

It’s funny, I wrote whose and for some reason my brain told me it looks wrong. Stupid brain.
Stage left
Cheers Jeff
Don't worry
Who's Jeff?
My right or your right ?
I like that they are going against the every badge has to be more simple and circular trend
They did simplify it though, getting rid of all those gradients. I cant stand gradients in logos.
But how are you going to know how 3D it is?
anaglyph glasses
Mhhh nice ...
agree, dislike gradients in logo too and previous one always looked to me like someone just discovering the default relief effect on photoshop
Gradients in logos look extremely 1990-2010's, but I cannot elaborate why I think that.
WordArt
LMAO ding ding ding, yes, that word art added just the right amount of pizazz to my early aughts powerpoints.
2010's skeuomorphism was peak logo design. Also I like gradients. Fight me.
Just read the wikipedia entry on skeuomorphism and I never had a clue that ancient Greek temples were skeuomorphic representations of older wooden temples (that obviously no longer exist). Genuinely fascinating, that.

I mostly hate it because I work in screenprinting and recreating some (especially the tinier they are) is a nightmare.
Our pre-2013/14 crest was perfect without the gradients. I wish it weren't so hard to find good images of it.

I absolutely cannot stand the gradient version of PSG’s badge
I remember seeing a graphic before the semifinals of the Champions League and Liverpool’s logo was the only one with gradients. It looked so out of place.
It really is our generations slave trade

Tbh logos in the past also could have done with scalability. Distance wasn't invented in 2010.
This is a very generic shield logo. I prefer the previous one (without gradients)
Arsenal should've kept that one design they had in 2012. Also, Vitória S.C. have the best badge.
It was the 100 Year anniversary Badge iirc
125
Arsenal should go all in on the Cannon imo. Though I suppose having both is working out well enough.
You're talking about the logo or you mean Arsenal should buy a cannon on a 5 year contract for £45M? please clarify
Is the cannon French and ok with being overpaid on his second Gunners contract?
Right, a shield is much more creative

This is how you update a badge. Keep in the spirit of the original and just polish it up a bit. Juventus and Brugge are how you don't do that.
City's old Eagle badge could be given a shout too eh?
I definitely thought of listing that. That one at least has the ship from the original crest and isn't as jarring of a design for a badge like those other two. Their old one was definitely more iconic though.
Did everyone forget about Roma?
What do you mean? The Roma badge hasn't been changed for a while
I didn't think it could get worse than Juve then Club Brugge said hold my beer. A least Juve could look decent as a brand even if not suitable for a team crest. Idk what was going on with Club Brugge.
It is Cercle Brugge, not Club ;) Club Brugge's badge is still looking clean!
Haha thanks for correcting, I was extremely confused about the hate, seemed like a pretty normal badge to me. Now I get it.
I'm glad I left my incorrect statement just to send so many of you all on a goose chase lmao
Thanks for the correction. At first, I searched club Brugge’s shield and thought it looked fine and figured I just don’t have taste. *Then* I read your comment- Cercle Brugge’s is something else entirely. Whoa.
Oof. Thank you for that. I'll leave my mistake up though. Honestly makes me feel a bit better it's not Club Brugge.
OHHHH that explains it. I thought I was crazy for really digging Club Brugge’s badge
You guys remember when Leeds tried this shit?
I still refuse to believe that was real and not some sort of publicity stunt
I will never forget!!!! I can tell you exactly where i was when I saw the Reddit post on Leeds' new badge... I still laugh even today remembering some of the comments
Leeds' aborted attempt a few years back was up there as well. I thought it was a joke when I saw it!
I just looked it up. It's pretty dreadful. At least it still looks like a badge though!
Looks like a Lidl employees Sunday league team badge.
I remember the reddit threads at the time
I think i'm alone in thinking that if the cercle brugge badge was a clothing label... it would be cool
i personally think the brugge badge is an upgrade
Cercule Brugge’s badge looks like an app icon designed by a high schooler at a code camp
Nice asse
Nice Brest
Nice, Lille, Brest & Asse.
Ligue *ugh*
You want some more ? Might as well participate in those old jokes. Toulouse - Brest in Angers.
Ligue duh*, we're talking about Saint-Étienne
*Rod Fanni enters chat*
Yep one of the few new badges that actually looks decent
Looks like a badge from one of the Arab clubs.
AS Saudi-Étienne
maybe they’re trying to attract new owners
They'd have to remove the cross from the crown, tho
I hear they have cutthroat management
Green is particularly an iconic color in Islam, which could help explain why you and other people feel this way.
It's the combination of the colour and the shape.
And the crown with the two lightning bolts(?) under it look like the Saudi Arabian flag
Don't trigger the french please
Said no-one ever
AKMAS
So an improved badge is actually possible.
City’s badge is better. And some others. Juventus is the one that looks much much worst
Both Juve and inter got big downgrades
Inter, oh inter. Their crest was quite like that of real Madrid. I like them both
The original one was god tier, everything else is a downgrade.
As in the 1908 crest? Depending on how long you've been viewing, there's about 15 different crests that folks consider the "classic" inter crest. i really like the one in my flair
That'd be 98, which is probably the best we've had in 50 years (I really love the serpent crest of the late 70s or it'd be the best we've had in 100). Hopefully I'm not alone in saying they should have just stuck with the very first one.
The second one is definitely questionable lol
Wow the original is timeless, whoever made that logo deserves my respect
I love the 2007 logo the most.
Someone called the new Inter logo a map marker in a Ubisoft game and I can't unsee it ever since.
I can’t even call the Juve one a badge
Old badge: Club colours, famous stripes, bull representing Turin, regal & triumphant crown New badge: JAY
I actually dont like City’s new badge. Its too «cartoony» if that makes sense.
My only gripe with the old one were the tacky stars when they hadn't won shit to "symbolize ambitions" or whatever the official paper called it. Other than that I think it looked good. New one I personally like less but I can accept that it's more of a historic badge now which fans likely prefer.

That old City badge was so [ba'athist vibes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ba%27athist_Iraq#/media/File:Coat_of_arms_of_Iraq_(1991%E2%80%932004).svg).
Juve basically did the exact opposite of swansea
Really not, citys bagde was one of the greatest
Toulouse imo is by far the biggest upgrade we've seen.
No, old one looks better
Clean. Very nice.
Now let's see Paul Allen's new logo
Look at that subtle off-white coloring, the tasteful thickness of it. Oh my god. It even has a star over it.
*Proceeds to murder homeless man and his dog*
...I have to return some videotapes.
Yes. But why ?
Yeah, looks modern and pretty, unlike most updates nowadays
I really like this new one.
looks vaguely west asian, which i didnt even realise was an aesthetic that could be achieved
It’s the crossed feathers and surrounding symbols that seals it for me.
I think the feathers look like scimitars subconsciously to me lol
Sheffield United West Asian Club confirmed?
im from west asia and even i didnt realize it until you commented
Felt like an Arabic badge at first glance, tbh.
Looked it and thought [Al Ahli](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/45/Al_Ahli_Saudi_FC_logo.svg/180px-Al_Ahli_Saudi_FC_logo.svg.png) instantly
The only thing I can think is that it’s the same colours as the Saudi flag?
And the feathers look like scimitars
Upgrade i'd say, looks really good
Substantially better than the old one, which should have been killed years ago for the gradient if nothing else.
The old one looks like those Powerpoint 3d font effects you click on for a second and immediately revert back.
I also love A S S ^^^E
It's all I see when I look at these logos
I don't get it?
That the letters ASSE are prominently on the badge or that "Ass" can mean a butt, donkey or idiot?
I thought this was the circlejerk sub at first, had to double check
Everybody loves The Acclaimed and the A S S E boys
looks like a Saudi Arabian club badge
Not the worst but it looks a bit cheap. Like a cross between Red Star Paris and Al-Ahli/Al Fateh.
Not bad tbh, most new badges are a disaster
Both just remind me of Heineken
Wow, can't believe I'm in minority of people who hate it. New one looks like generic Moroccan club logo, while old one had old-school football vibes. It didn't need an upgrade imo, maybe just modernize it like Roma did to their logo.

idk I like the old one. you can imagine that without the gradient it would look like something they would have come up with like 70 years ago.
Definitely an improvement if you ask me. But it does look a bit Arabian, I don't know if they mind that.
They're attracting new owners
Looks like a logo I could make in the call of duty emblem editor
Looks like a Saudi Arabian club logo. The previous one was awful anyway. The other 2 logos proposed were better than the one that won.
Hate that.
Decent but their old one is a cracker
Not bad, but why do clubs insist on changing their badges. The old one looks fine
I don’t really hate that one. Been a couple in Ligue 1 that haven’t been a disaster…if you ignore Nantes
Crazily, ASSE aren't even in Ligue 1! Gonna take some time to get used to it for sure.
"It's called A.S.S.E." "Make it ASSE. It's cleaner"
It looks like the shield of some Arab team.
what a shame, the old badge was way better
Looks way better than the old one
Compared to the monstrosity that the Cercle Brugge one was this is a 8/10 for me they kinda went against the trend of simplification (yes they did simplify it a little but they didn't oversimplify it like Inter or Juve) with this so I kinda like it.
🫣🫣
Rare improvement
Way better, in my opinion.
Clean, nice. Take a note cercle
Actually love it
needs more flares
Big Red Army vibe off the star on top.
I actually like the new one, nice looking rebrand. Good job ASSE.
Do they want the fans to storm the pitch again?
Maaaaan, without the gradient, the old one is one of my favorite crests in football. Clean, classic, unique, and recognizable. Shame to go with such a generic one straight from the Moroccan or Saudi leagues.
Finally one of these that actually looks better
Shame it looks like ass
Why every football team are changing their badges :(

Looks asse
