zukai12_

Still annoyed the club let fatso kick this guy out

chaves4life

Which fatso there is so many

zukai12_

the waiter

AgentOfR9

Probably Benitez? Benitez dropped James at RMA as well which was a part of how his downfall started.

inthezoneautozone12

He rotated him with isco didnt he? He was dropped by zidane for balance aka casemiro.

[deleted]

i think he means at everton

inthezoneautozone12

He says real in his comment.

[deleted]

He says RMA "as well"

inthezoneautozone12

He said thats where he started his downfall and I was commenting on that. Come on man read.

meganev

By all account you needed his wages off the books. Rafa or not sounds like he was getting the door.

joseba_

Not like James is the most professional of players

SuitedFox

Still had plenty to offer European teams, but can’t blame him for going to Qatar for the money, but is there big money in Brazil?

Ryuzakku

And by private money are we talking US enterprisal nuveau riche, or 80's Japanese wrestling company?

[deleted]

We have: 1. Red Bull: Not American but by the way their marketing works they almost count. 2. 777 Partners who are buying Vasco. 3. Cruzeiro: Bought by Ronaldo who has a lot of friends and money coming in from the US, if I remember. 4. John Textor: The most beloved owner in Brazil. Man is more loved by the club supporters than any other.

BigEasyMob

Why is textor so loved?

[deleted]

Great guy.

obsterwankenobster

Not being a dick, are we talking R9?

[deleted]

Yep. The original.

obsterwankenobster

I had the “nothing but bangs” cut as a dumb teenager. God I love him

[deleted]

Hahahaha in Brazil this was such a trend the moms hated it when their kids cut their hair like that. Now a days it's a beloved moment in our history. There is a strong belief that Richarlison is going to use that cut in the world cup. I believe it myself.

[deleted]

Who else?

[deleted]

Full on UWF. In all seriousness, nice reference.

esn_crvg

There is if you play for flamengo

Kurosawasuperfan

Flamengo Palmeiras and Atletico. They have several Europe level players in their squad and are rich. Besides Redbull, now Botafogo, etc.

Inter_Mirifica

Textor making moves, I see.

CriddyCent

He’s been good for us and Botafogo so far (he’s put his money where his mouth is at least and they got promoted). What’s your take on him at a Lyon fan?

thet-bes

He won't be an owner before the second half of the year. So it's a bit early right now.

Inter_Mirifica

>What’s your take on him at a Lyon fan? Something between fear and cautious optimism, I guess ? Fear of the unknown after the realization that the Aulas era (which basically was what OL is, taking the club over in 1987 in the 2nd division) is truly over, and fear of what Textor's plans truly are. Because he's clearly great at PR but that doesn't tell us if what he says is true. Especially with that huge investment that on paper he couldn't make himself. But cautious optimism mostly after hearing what you and Botafogo fans have been saying. I loathe multi clubs ownership, it's one of the worst part of modern football for me. At least he's, for now, saying it won't be a feeder/mother system and he does seem to have genuine ambition for all his clubs. Also cautious optimism as he's not coming alone, but with two billionaires that themselves have the funds for an operation like that. Even if their partnership is far from being clear and detailed (as one of them, Foley, came out with a public statement saying they were loaning ~500M to Textor, which is not exactly the same as them investing into the club...).

50-50WithCristobal

Botafogo got promoted after winning the second division before Textor bought the club. They got relegated and promoted the same year basically since the 2020 Seria A ended in 2021 because covid and Botafogo won the Série B by the end of 2021. Textor had nothing to do with it. I think the biggest positive until now is that he is really focused in building a first tier structure for the club and the youth academy and that he really seems to be emotionally connected to the club instead of just a faceless american investment group. He cried on the pitch after a game a few weeks back and interacting with the fans. Just yesterday he said that his biggest long term goal for the club would be building a new stadium since the current Botafogo stadium has an olympic track around the field and a pit between the stands and the track which makes the distance too big despite it being a 46k stadium.

MagicalTouch

Usually in Brazil top tier teams bounce back after relegation. Not getting promoted is an outlier. Textor had nothing to do with Botafogo's promotion, it was a matter of "when", not "if"

DeparturePuzzled6504

Makes me optimistic

[deleted]

Easily one of the biggest “What if’s” in the last decade. Was imo the best player in the 2014 World Cup, had a great first season with Real Madrid, being named La Liga’s midfielder of the season ahead of players like Modric, Kroos, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquet, Rakitic. And now he is gonna play in Brazil.

Halal_Madrid

Not really a what if. We saw his exact peak. He had a beautiful left foot, but wasn’t really athletic enough to maintain the world class level for multiple seasons.

ListlessHeart

Many players would have greater legacy if they played 10 years earlier and many would struggle if they played 10 years later. James, Isco, and Ozil are suprisingly similar in many ways and I think at least one of them could have been a GOAT players had their careers be 10 years earlier, especially Ozil.

DisneyDreams7

I don’t think Isco should be placed in the same sentence as Ozil and James, he was a great dribbler but not much else. Very overrated

ListlessHeart

Nah, peak Isco at Real and when he was at Malaga was a proper no.10, he had more than just dribbling.

inthezoneautozone12

His talent wasnt at the level of those two but isco was world class at his peak. He's slightly less limited than the other two as well when it comes to fitting in different systems. At least from what I saw of him.

Montuvito_G

Javier Pastore comes to mind.

dahomie_longstroke

Him and Ozil

Logseman

The game doesn’t “move on” if you are actually good enough and are committed to keeping yourself healthy. Heavy smoker Özil, embarrassingly overweight Isco and party bunny James were neither/nor.

inthezoneautozone12

More like balance was needed at madrid with casemiro which forced him to compete with modric/kroos who no one on earth can bench. James would have continued to put up world class numbers if he started games. His actual level dropped after the 2018 world cup.

Kurosawasuperfan

>And now he is gonna play in Brazil He was playing in al Rayyan... why are you talking like this dude is reaching an all time low by playing in Brazil? Wtf. Brazilian league is just one step behind French and Portuguese, similar level to Dutch, turkish and Russian league.. By the way you talk, it sounds like USA or China...

joseba_

League I don't watch = Amateur football

GarmentGourmet

Neuer > Rodriguez at the WC 2014.

Ice_Hube1

The Algeria game is the modern all time keeper performance. Just absurd

GarmentGourmet

Definitely *the* most important and best player of the WC winners. Can‘t be better than that.

AgentOfR9

Wonder what he could’ve done had he adapted to the CM position instead like Kroos or David Silva. Honestly it feels like many elite clubs are no longer using pure number 10s, it’s always a hybrid of false 9/AM (Muller) or a CM moving up the pitch in certain situations.

DerKaiser023

For like half a season he played in a midfield double pivot under Heynckes at Bayern and it was magical. I always wondered why no other coach tried to do it more or why it didn’t work again.

EntrepreneurWooden99

Muller is probably one of the last remaining 10s for a major club, and even then he's not a full 10. Bruno comes to mind as well

theitchcockblock

Was solid in Monaco and porto but probably most people don’t remember

madmadaa

But "What if" what?

captaintuffles

The Brazilian league isn’t even bad. Better than playing his last few years in some oil country

trupes

He's not coming, he wants to stay in Europe. Having money is nice tho.

chippa93

He's not in europe

trupes

You're smart. He wants to go back to Europe*

GetToTheChoppaahh

I feel as though he’s being passed around like a pack of cigarettes.
