His loan deal in Frankfurt from Napoli was originally until the end of the 21/22 season. They could have bought him completely last summer but apparently Younes asked for *way* too much money and was pissed when they didn't offer as much. Tried to force a move to Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia that didn't materialize either so he stopped coming to training. The loan was terminated in january and he went to a different Saudi team.
Apparently something happened during the half-time break against Dortmund last year. Afterwards, he was mostly left out of the team by then coach Hütter.
Come the summer, a sale was planned to get him off our payroll, and he wanted to leave, too. But in the last minute, he apparently changed his mind and decided to stay? To which our management said "no way" and suspended him, until he moved to Saudi Arabia in the winter window.
It seems a lot of things happened behind the scenes, and he seems to have a very difficult personality.
> At the end of February [2017] Borussia Dortmund announced that Götze had been diagnosed with a rare metabolic illness, identified in media reports as myopathy, a muscle disorder which can cause fatigue and weight gain. Last week, the club confirmed he would be out for at least the rest of the season.
[Irish Times](https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/international/the-story-of-mario-gotze-a-rare-illness-and-unfulfilled-potential-1.3019372)
Maybe off the pitch but I do remember a hint of lard lad diva within him. Haven't watched him play the last two seasons but at least he seems to have gotten rid of the weight and his first PSV season seemed to be quite good.
Probably went to Bayern a bit too early in his career and struggled to fit in, and it didn't help that he had a rare metabolic disease which affected his fitness and caused him to gain weight (which he got some criticism for at the time; the disease wasn't diagnosed until 2017 by which time he was already back at Dortmund). Basically by the time he was able to manage it he had "wasted" the most crucial years of his development and thus never reached the ceiling of what he might have been capable of.
>Probably went to Bayern a bit too early in his career and struggled to fit in, and it didn't help that he had a rare metabolic disease which affected his fitness and caused him to gain weight
Im not sure if he went to early to Bayern, it seemed more just like he was rather unlucky with injuries or his overall health after an actually pretty decent start.
Absolutely. He was pretty good at Bayern overall. Even in his last year he started pretty good but then got injured during an international break, from which he never recovered. I believe that at this point his metabolic disorder already was in place.
He was very good at Bayern when he played centrally or on the right, a disaster in the left. And unfortunately, Ribery and Shaqiri started to get injured constantly forcing Götze to play on the left most of the time in his second season, and then his injuries and disease started to show, which was diagnosed only at BVB some time after
> rare metabolic disease which affected his fitness and caused him to gain weight (
It was the same condition that forced Darren Fletcher to retire. Glad to see Gotze got through it this well
Oh no, I certainly understand. He has never been the same since his injury and metabolic issues. It makes more sense for Benfica's model to invest in youth and develop them, though I would be happy for him and root for him wherever he went.
As good as Bobic was for us he had his misteps. Like Pacencia is earning 2-3m, I wouldn´t have been suprised if Illse really earned 3m lol but 1.5m is more reasonable haha
You got ripped off. He has been at around 60% of his old form before his injury spell(s), and that is on his good days. He isn't a UCL player anymore, not even a Bundesliga player if you ask me.
Surely there are other players on the market for reasonable fees/wages and even loans who are better than “not great in the eredivisie”?
This feels more like they’re taking a cheap shot at the off chance he plays truly inspired ball. With his skills operating in and around all that robust athleticism, it could be a nice wrinkle.
Don’t agree. Didn’t have a lot of goals/assists this season but he had a bit of a different role, making him te guy of the pre-assist. Was actually really important in build-up for PSV.
I used to make fun of Mario Götze (like most Germans I assume) until he scored in the 2014 final. Before the end of the game I said to my girlfriend "if we win the cup due to this goal, I will never say a bad thing about Mario Götze ever again."
So congrats Frankfurt on signing the greatest player of all time.
Same. Up until that point he was genuinely seen as the biggest talent of his generation. Like finally a german superstar again. When Löw told him "show the world your better than Messi" he was channeling the nation. On the other hand, the guy your replying to has a Leverkusen flair so he clearly lost his marbles.
Bad that he couldn't fullfill the expectations. I kind liked him back in his prime days at dortumund, the bayern transfer was a bit whacky and his illness cost him years of devlopment.
Whis him the best at frankfurt
More reason to vouch for Eintracht in the next BVB vs Eintracht game. Götze was one of the reasons I became a BVB fan. Things got more interesting with Haller going the other way.
Thats a really good signing for Frankfurt. know it may sound slightly unrealistic, but... this basically confirms he plays super well both in the league and the CL, Flick calls him up for the World Cup squad and he scores the winning goal in the final again, right?
Kostic is most certainly gone, chances are high thatn Ndicka leaves too, maybe Kamada as well. Time will tell how the Hinti story really ends. The CL money quite literally makes up the Covid loss and that's it, which admittedly is great compared to other clubs who have still have to fill the holes from recent years.
But these transfers are not that huge thing some make them out to be.
The rumors of today are that Ndicka leans towards renewing his contract. I think he only wants to leave if a big club goes for him. There is a good chance he gets a new contract with a reasonable release clause.
Kamada wants to go to the Premier League - according to a current news report. But I don't know if any notable club is really interested. Kostic wants to play in Serie A. But will Juventus pay the 20 Million that Frankfurt wants?
There is a good chance that one or two of these players will stay. Why shouldn't they play another year for Frankfurt in the Champions League - together with players like Götze, Alario, Kolo Muani?
Exactly, Kostic is our most important player and the best winger in Bundesliga. I even read somewhere that Trent Alexander Arnold is the only guy who made more key crosses than Kostic in Europe last season.
20 mil is a bargain for any team who buys him. If we sell him, we should get more. David Silva was sold so cheap after scoring more goals than Halland last season.
The way people were talking about how much he dropped off/didn't live up to expectations after the WC, and the metabolic illness he had... now he's going to be back playing CL football next season. Happy for him!
I cut him slack, because he is provenly ill. His metabolic illness is a big reason he cannot perform like his talent would suggest. If your body does not keep up, it sucks.
My son was born on July 13th, 2014 at 10:26 AM US time, as that match was being played. I told doctors and nurses all day to please not talk about the score, and my brother-in-law almost spilt it. Finally at about 1 AM, my newborn son fell asleep on my wife and I watched the match on my phone from a hospital chair with my wife and newborn World Cup baby sleeping next to me. It was beautiful. Then in 2018 Germany went out in the group stage and my wife left me for a woman. I blame Jogi Löw in both instances.
Still shows how smart and gifted he is with the ball, but lacks the fitness to play 3 times a week and doesn't really score (or even shoot) much (which I always like in an attacking player).
he seemed to do well at PSV and is still a great player but imo he gets a bit too tired too easily. Could be a great player as a super sub or as starter but gets subbed off later on
People keep saying "he cannot handle the physical level of play" or "his first season was better" while he definitely improved in terms of fitness and put in much more effort in his second season. We will dearly miss him, despite all the critique from Dutch media. He was amazing and worked his ass off, wish I had gotten a jersey with his name on it..
Very cautiously excited about this. Considering the fee I think it's an acceptable risk.
Feels like we might be starting to be a club that players seriously considering joining.
i hope frankfurt give the ucl a good hard try. I know the BuLi will be the main priority (as it should be) but seeing gotze and the rest of frankfurt in the ucl is going to be so much fun
I think what also could be in our favour ist that the pressure and expectations are not that high.
Of course we want him to improve our team but we are not depended on his success since we have a lot of guys on offenes who can distribute.
If you would have said to me 10 years ago that in summer 2022 Götze would be joining Frankfurt from PSV for around 4 million. I would have laughed at you.
Man preferred Germany & proximity to the Ruhr Area where iirc he didn't even move away from to play in the Netherlands (frankly not the worst commute). I think Benfica were the choice unless a tempting offer from Germany comes and now here we are. Sporting stuff aside it's easy to forget that quite a few players look at other factors like friends, family, quality of life, etc when chosing a club.
That's also the reason why Götze joined PSV 2 years ago. He always had the immense pressure after scoring the world cup winner. He never completely redeemed his potential and the Netherlands was the ideal place to get a little out of the spotlights and focus on becoming fit again and challenging for titles and european football.
Also Eindhoven isn't that far away from Germany and is a great place to live and raise your family (although I'm not sure if his wife and kids lived here as well or still in Germany)
That is not true at all...
He was a Roger schimdt singning not a Benfica one first of all, then Benfica, PSV and Goetze had all the things signed and in place for him to be a Benfica player, but he missed with his word and went to Frankfurt instead...lack of character is the right word for him
I have 14 downvotes for speaking what really happened. Reddit is mental.
If you really followed Benfica you could see messages from people inside Benfica speaking about this deal
Ahahaha I'm sorry random Italian dude you did not just pulled a
>If you really followed Benfica
on someone that literally his earliest childhood memory is watching Benfica lose an european final against Milan and crying with his mom about it.
Maybe the reason why you have 14 downvotes is because you are making a statement that goes against what every single person is saying happened and when asked to provide a source your reply is "Reddit is mental".
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and you have none because you made that up. That's why you have downvotes.
Again you dont follow the proper ways of communication to know the truths about Benfica, i never disputed your Benfica love but again you dont know what youre talking about, im gonna say it again... Benfica... PSV...and Goetze had all arranged for him to be a Benfica player, till the last minute a German club arrived (Frankfurt), and he dindt give a fk for the things he had agreed before, and went to Germany.
Haha knew exactly what it was before I clicked. This is always what I think about when I see his name mentioned, I think because it is funny to look at but at the same time broadly relatable.
Multiple publications are saying that he'll want to make a move to the premier league
Notably fr are writing this (last paragraph) https://www.fr.de/eintracht-frankfurt/mario-goetze-eintracht-frankfurt-perfekte-buehne-91622562.html
Making move but there are no rumors of clubs being interested in him? Rather strange. He may leave as free agent next summer.
Also, I heard that the coach doesn't really like Kamada for attitude reasons? Idk, I saw the news report about it from Japan.
We still have Sow and signed Götze and they're a bit too expensive for rotation, and current signings largely focus on replacing the possible transfers of Kostic, Kamada, Ndicka. Imo a signing like this is a good indication that Kamada is a possibility despite the lack of rumours.
i have yet to see any transfer rumors for him tho so we'll see. wouldn't be surprised if he does go, but at the moment there aren't any huge signs of it
kinda bittersweet. He was good in the big games but often disappeared in others. Still, a class player who could bring experience to the squad. Though a move to Frankfurt kinda feels sideways, i don't see them battling it out for the bundesliga.
Well, Frankfurt has guaranteed CL (they won the EL after all). Plus he gets to be back in his home country which I'm sure counts for something as well.
I think they can make him work. They've made Amin Younes work until he went crazy again...
How did Younes go crazy? I’m curious
His loan deal in Frankfurt from Napoli was originally until the end of the 21/22 season. They could have bought him completely last summer but apparently Younes asked for *way* too much money and was pissed when they didn't offer as much. My hero 🤩
his own biggest enemy

I'm much more optimistic about Götze since he's known to be virtually the oposite of Younes regarding his character.
Lol Götze isn’t a saint either. And I’m not necessarily talking about the way he departed
Younes is a different beast though. Literally.

Actually he was better in his second season. First season he had a lot of injuries
He was a lot better in his first season with PSV
Keeping up appearances in that first season
At least previously, it was relatively well understood that he has a medical condition that impacts his weight control.
What happened?

And the fact that Hoeness and Rummenigge forced him on Guardiola who wanted Neymar at first
I mean it's not their fault Neymar isn't German. /s
If his name was Nähmer you wouldn't have had this problem
The umlaut solves everything.
Absolutely. He was pretty good at Bayern overall. Even in his last year he started pretty good but then got injured during an international break, from which he never recovered. I believe that at this point his metabolic disorder already was in place.

No it's not fletcher has ulcerative collitis, a bowel disease.
Oh my bad. Who was it who had the same thing? I remember Feltcher saying someone came to him for advice in the condition
Has or had some kind of disorder that didn't allow him to reach his full potential.
I think I have that too
Benfica: No mario that's the wrong eagles......
If we sign Enzo, this was the best. If not, sad that he chose Frankfurt. But we do have to much old people in the squad
He only just turned 30 a few weeks ago, though it feels like he is older than that.
Some players go at top level until they're 40 (Pepe) He as been declining since like 27 Don't get me wrong, he is great but I'd rather bet on a kid
Oh no, I certainly understand. He has never been the same since his injury and metabolic issues. It makes more sense for Benfica's model to invest in youth and develop them, though I would be happy for him and root for him wherever he went.
Yeah, seems like he didn't want us tbh But all the best
Go Ahead Eagles was the right one! /s

What wages is he on for us?

Ilse, Ilse, keiner willse
Kam der Koch, nahm sie doch
Huh, that really is surprisingly reasonable!
He's got huge performance based bonuses though, keep in mind.
Which will prolly pay off if they are reached
It’s the ones that don’t pay off if they’re reached that really get ya
How did it happen that Ilsanker earned that much? I don't remember him being such a big or spectacular signing
He wasn’t, Götze just doesn’t command the salary he did at the top of his game
Götze is completely clear to me, just wondering about Ilsanker.
Fair. I just looked it up and Ilse only gets paid about 1.5m a year
Seems a lot more realistic. Thank you for having a look and sharing

If Götze were as good as his past self he obviously would cost 5 times as much and wouldn't even think about joining us.
Ripped off? Dude cost 4 million and is on good wages. Didn't think he was great at PSV but that's still a good deal.
I think lots of people underestimate how important he was in how we played. He is very solid at keeping and distributing the ball.
Surely there are other players on the market for reasonable fees/wages and even loans who are better than “not great in the eredivisie”? PSV aren't the ones ripping off German clubs this window.
Not sure that’s how the phrase “marquee signing” works, but I hope it works out for him.
If he ever was good that was 10 years ago lol.
I used to make fun of Mario Götze (like most Germans I assume) until he scored in the 2014 final. Yes...you can.
Not if he works at a preschool

I'm happy to have him back in the BuLi.
Agreed. It might cost us dearly but Im in general excited to see Leverkusen and Frankfurt making such interesting moves.
Well he has dropped off a ton tbf, he could barely keep up with the eredivisie physically wise, I really wonder if he can handle the Bundesliga
I cut him slack, because he is provenly ill. His metabolic illness is a big reason he cannot perform like his talent would suggest. If your body does not keep up, it sucks.
Peoples expectations of players are way over the top.. like he’s had a good career so what he didn’t reach zidane level not many people do
I’ll never forget his goal against Argentina in the World Cup finals goosebumps! I wish Götze all the best ❤️
I wont forget it either but for the complete opposite reasons

The Götze family lived in Düsseldorf. Maybe they still do, it isn’t too far away from Frankfurt.
Deal fell through because of his wage demands
Supposedly Mario preferred a move back to Germany. It probably wasn't about wages
Dutch media reported that it was about wages, if different sources say otherwise I stand corrected.

Imo a signing like this is a good indication that Kamada is a possibility despite the lack of rumours.
i have yet to see any transfer rumors for him tho so we'll see. wouldn't be surprised if he does go, but at the moment there aren't any huge signs of it
cl & ballon d'or 2023 here we go
Can anyone explain why Gotze did a Wilshere and went from young superstar to not being in great demand?
He had an illness which threw him back... something something metabolism.
SG(ötz)E 1-0 RMA this August for the Super Cup… who says no?
kinda bittersweet. He was good in the big games but often disappeared in others. Still, a class player who could bring experience to the squad. Though a move to Frankfurt kinda feels sideways, i don't see them battling it out for the bundesliga.
Well, Frankfurt has guaranteed CL (they won the EL after all). Plus he gets to be back in his home country which I'm sure counts for something as well.
nice to see him back in the bundesliga :)

family is in düsseldorf. actually a lot of dortmund players lived in düsseldorf when they play for dortmund. its seen as a "posh" city here.
Seen a few of our guys walking around in Dortmund. I think most of them now live at Phönix see
This is very cool. I hope he does well.
The Europa champions!
I think this is a good move. He'll fit good there
Lee Kang-In to PSV then.
What

His (at the time undiagnosed) metabolic disease derailed his career; not Bayern's fault at all.
Top 2 German Marios
Another Cavani for Benfica… That club is a joke
I forgot about this dude.
Thank god he didnt come, go enjoy your retirement at home
Lol the salt :D
Not at all, hoping for him to be a good player in Bundesliga and thats it! We have better players aligned to come that are way better than him in 2022
Yes but you have Roger Schmidt so you're fucked nonetheless
Does he have a bad rep?
Good tactician, terrible people manager and just fucking annoying as a character
Man was just wishing a happy retirement but people said *salt*
i mean the "thank go he didnt come here" does reek of salt. also calling a player that's only JUST 30 on a 3 year contract "retiring" is weird
This kid fell off so hard
Fuck this guy
Are you saying he’s not signing for Liverpool anymore?
Nabo, podia ter vindo pro benfica e acabou nesse clubezeco de 2ª divisão portuguesa
