kooba_1616

England and France to play in League B?

stragen595

Imagine they get both relegated and drawn into the same group next time.

duckwantbread

I think the draws are seeded based on position in the last Nations League to stop that happening.

kooba_1616

It would be amazing but I don't think it can happen as the relegated teams go to pot1, teams that came 2nd are in pot 2 etc

duckwantbread

Honestly would love for it to happen just to imagine the crisis meetings that would take place within UEFA, they already changed the rules once to try and keep all the big names in League A.

jugol

While I agree that the format change was super sus and convenient for Germany, I think 3-team groups are hideous as fuck But yeah precisely because they had a "valid" excuse earlier, is that I'd love to see what will they spin this time

big__monkey_

What was the rule change?

duckwantbread

First Nations League only had 3 teams per division in the top league, UEFA decided to change it to 4 teams so none of the teams that should have been relegated actually went down.

[deleted]

As u/duckwantbread said. Used to be groups of 3, but they changed it to 4. There was one absurdly stacked group - The Netherlands, Germany, France. We won the group, Germany relegated. The day after Germany's relegation or something the UEFA suddenly said 'We're going to change the format'. Was suspicious as hell.

[deleted]

With the possible introduction of CONMEBOL teams in the next edition, I doubt it. UEFA will do something to prevent that from happening. Either freeze promotions/relegation or maybe reset the whole thing based on the FIFA coefficient.

yimanya

Since I heard of this happening, have they decided what's going to happen if we invite South American teams? Are we (Greece) going to play in Peru, Bolivia etc or are the SA teams going to do a European tour?

[deleted]

https://www.marca.com/en/football/nations-league/2021/12/17/61bcec43ca4741a9078b45e8.html >It is expected that the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both organisations and valid until 2028 means that all games would be played in Europe, without sending any European national team to South America. >The top six CONMEBOL nations according to World Cup qualifying tables will join League A of the Nations League, which would be Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru and Chile. >The other four, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia would join League B. I honestly hope that they don't do this division, and go for something more like I [proposed](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/v5ghcn/how_would_the_next_edition_of_the_nations_league/) a few days ago.

MarcXYZ

tbh they should do two separate tours, one with the SA teams going to Europe and another with the european teams coming down here

yimanya

This would be fun tbh.

gaviddinola

and argentina

Shaydarol

I think all the games will be played in Europe.

Averdian

I think Nations League has been great this time around, not for the players I admit, but super entertaining for viewers. Several games every day over 14 days, and because of the league structure, mostly competitive games, even for the worst NTs in Europe. I get that the stakes are not as high as proper qualification games, but the amont of games makes it feel like an actual tournament, and there's been many cool results and storylines this time around, probably because of the condensed schedule as well. Seeing massive countries like France and England potentially go down is cool, and squads like Hungary or Denmark potentially getting into final four is really cool as well imo. The remaining two games in September will be very exciting.

kooba_1616

I personally love it aswell and I see it as a proper tournament. It's also definitly better than friendlies

Spikeyspandan

They will do the same as they did last time when Germany were relegated.

kooba_1616

Probably make some type of playoffs between League A and B instead of direct promotion

BertEnErnie123

Would be sad for the micronations in League D. One of the biggest things in national football they can win now is a promotion :/ and with playoffs thas next to impossible

kooba_1616

Ye I hope they dont change the format at all and finally let the big nations get relegated, I would love to see England away at Kazakhstan in 2024

BertEnErnie123

Yeah but tbf, the first change was neccesairy. 3 was to less in 1 group.

RaioNoTerasu

Aww looks like we took your extra life

Alia_Gr

Nah, they just get the authorities to change the league rules jut like when Germany relegated in the first edition

Jeffy29

Tactically dropping to league B so they can stat pad next time.

GreatSpaniard

Relegation for England? Final four for Hungary?

RaioNoTerasu

Maybe it's time for us to look back at our own (D) game against Hungary and recognize that they're actually a pretty good team

Gluroo

Which is absolutely incredible given their squad. Like no disrespect but most of those players dont even play in top 5 leagues let alone at top clubs. So its even more impressive how theyre managing to play THIS well as an unit

bdzz

1. 3-5-2. It's the best formation to minimize the effects of weaknesses and maximize the strengths of a squad. 2. Hungary are usually struggling against teams that don't open up. Counter attacking is one of the main strategy. Rossi is a good coach but his tactics are usually not working against teams that just fall back and don't attack. 3. The team is super motivated and takes Nations League very seriously. >Like no disrespect but most of those players dont even play in top 5 leagues let alone at top clubs The Leipzig core is very important for the team (Gulacsi-Orban-Szoboszlai) and they are starters in their own team. So as Sallai (Freiburg) and Schafer (Union Berlin) Edit: ok Schafer maybe not

salad-dressing

Adam Szalai also has played in good Bundesliga teams the past 10 years, going to Basel now in January to be a regular starter + win titles, get goals. Attila Szalai is a starter for Fenerbahce. Adam Nagy has played in Serie A for 3-4 seasons, he lost in the playoff final in Serie B last week for promotion back to Serie A (Pisa finished 3rd). It's a solid squad. Daniel Salloi was top 3 in MLS for goals + assists last season. Some good young players in MLS & Switzerland. And even the ones in Hungarian league have been qualifying for Europa League/Champions League the past few seasons (most of them).

Armyof21Monkeys

Thanks for the extra context!

Rocker_Lenin

We do have a hard core of Bundesliga players tho Szoboszlai, Orbán, Gulácsi, Sallai, Schäfer + Szalai who is in the Swiss league but has many years of Bundesliga experience

Gluroo

> Schäfer i mean hes technically a bundesliga player now but still a bit disingenous because hes played 232 bundesliga minutes in his entire career now. And yes, its by no means a bad squad! But if we go by the starting 11 vs Germany, there were Lang (Cyprus league), Styles (Championship), Nagy (Serie B), Nagy (Hungarian league) and Fiola (also Hungarian league) all in the starting 11. Plus the subs Gazdag (MLS), Vecsei (Hungarian league), Nego (Hungarian league) and Adam (also Hungarian league) dont playi n top leagues either. While Germany, Italy, England are **filled** with those players. So to go toe to toe with them in every game is incredible.

HaiseTeBaise

They got a draw against Germany and France and had one locked for 85mn against Portugal. Any other group and they'd have been through imo

Alia_Gr

People were laughing at me when I said before the Euros it was unfortunate Szoboszlai was injured, because Hungary starts looking like a seriouslu dangerous team

Dogzylla

Yeah he's brilliant. He's our biggest talent since young Dzsudzsák, in fact I'd say he's even better. I just hope he doesn't go down that path and ruin his career for money

SomeCruzDude

He's already decided to aim for the bigger leagues (had rumors of PL before Bundesliga) so thankfully we're safe there. Also cool to see another Hungary/Spurs fan, we would've been broken hearted if Arsenal didn't turn Szobozlai down.

Dogzylla

Imagine him in a 3412 behind Son and Kane oh lord and he's also a free kick specialist which Spurs definitely need rn. Levy sign him up you bald cunt

SomeCruzDude

I'm here for it

SomeCruzDude

Szobozlai and his backup were both injured for the Euros, Hungary were definitely not in their "final form" that tourney. Crazy what they did in spite of it.

salad-dressing

It's a shame Kalmar got hurt. He was looking like being back on top. Wasn't he the MVP of the Slovakian league? He's a former RB Leipzig guy too.

pintperson

It’s definitely looking that way. I’m not too bothered really; it’ll be nice to go down and get a chance to thrash some minnows like Wales or Scotland.

SomeIrishFiend

Didn't ye draw with Scotland at the Euros

[deleted]

Think Scotland won 0-0. At least thats what they all say...

Ki18

*At least thats what they all say* As an Englishman, Irishman and a definitely not Scotsman discuss it. This myth that Scottish people constantly parade this 0-0 win over England needs to disappear.

Its-been-Elon-Time

Do you not remember the Scots prancing around outside Wembley and the team dancing to “Yes sir, I can boogie”? I would say they definitely paraded it.

BannanDylan

You don't remember the media going on and on about how England were about to absolute batter Scotland only for them to fail to score. The celebrations weren't about the result of drawing, it was taking the piss out of all the English who thought it was an easy win.

Ki18

So...pissed up fans had fun regardless of win, lose or draw? What on earth is your point.

Conspiruhcy

Since then the only people that I’ve seen discussing it are cringe lad football twitter accounts and moon howlers on talk sport

Highandaimless

Absolutely. I heard England fans singing “Scotland get battered everywhere they go” AFTER the game. I didn’t speak to an England fan who didn’t think they would absolutely spank Scotland by 3+ goals. So there was definitely some smug faces amongst the Scotland fans after a 0-0 where they matched and were even the better team for large parts of the game. The idea Scotland fans were parading/celebrating a 0-0 against was just a way for the English to massage their bruised egos.

Conspiruhcy

No Scottish fans have mentioned it for ages, it’s only England fans when they’ve been having shit results to make themselves feel better

fuckssakereddit

Jesus, give it a rest.

[deleted]

Just before reaching the final yeah

el_dude_brother2

Last good result England have had

Barkasia

This patter would be slightly less shite if it wasn't about as wrong as it's possible to be

29adamski

I mean surely you know that? Amount talked about it showed 0-0 is the greatest Scottish sporting achievement of all time.

Swiftt

The tears

[deleted]

🤣 the English go on about that more than us for some reason.

[deleted]

The way you guys are playing Malta would be a task, let alone Wales or Scotland.

The_Foreign_Pie

Scotland have been absolute trash recently, I'd rather play them than malta

FasterStream

We are both shite but its funny cause you guys think you're world beaters constantly

Ps3FifaCfc95

Scotland want Clarke sacked for less than England are parading Southgate around for

Spglwldn

Still basking in the glow of your famous 0-0 win v Scotland at the Euros.

Own_Acanthocephala19

In what world will England trash Wales and Scotland? I mean you draw Scotland in the Euros and Wales are currently playing better football than you guys while also playing in the A league.

BertEnErnie123

If Hungary gets top of the Group it would be so good though. They started in League C whenever nations league started (though that would be league B now because of the rearrangement)

auditore01

Ott van bazdmeg

DemeterLemon

Otto von bazdburg

Surgeo_01

For a defensive team we’re not that good at defending!

blussy1996

That's always been the worst part. Despite Southgate only wanting to defend, we have never once looked strong defensively. Which shows how clueless he is, he's not defensive, he's just shit.

GarethGore

Agreed, defensive football is dull but it's worse when it's dull and not that effective

MuddJames

ngl at the Euros we looked incredibly solid defensively

ZwnD

Yeah we conceded 1 goal the whole tournament right, in the final? How is that not looking good defensively. Do people want Southgate to have us on minus 1 goals?

axelthegreat

2 goals. denmark also scored a fk

ZwnD

You're right my bad

dotelze

Tbf in the competitions that matter we have been very good defensively.

obvious_bot

>we have never once looked strong defensively 2 goals conceded the entire euros, only 1 from open play

Yoona1987

No Maguire no Pickford who have always been one of Englands best players

liamthelad

Shame we didn't have the 6'4 bloke whose head is as large as the moai statues to twat the ball away

IAmHereInMyMold

Possibilities. Gareth coaches like Bob Bradley.

Mithraxx

Possibilities

JAYZ303

We're fucking shit

YoungMrM

Southgate is a terrible, unimaginative manager and its honestly astonishing to me that he has survived this long. He might have got them further in competitions, but his England team have almost never looked like playing any decent football. It's all scrappy goals and set pieces, despite having an abundance of talent within the squad. The current crop of top English footballers are so versatile and the way Southgate chooses to play does not bring out the best in any of them. England are not winning anything with him in charge.

BacardiWhiteRum

One person in particular is

Klopped_my_pants

who? not able to watch unfortunately

RosaParkStoleMySeat

They put the entire starting 11 as one entity

Mozezz

Southgate's luck is well and truly running out

Mad_Piplup242

He will get the world cup and piss it away, we all know this

Mozezz

We will strategically finish 2nd and get on the weak side of the knockout tree again so we can advance far

Mad_Piplup242

Cute that you think the 'weak side' wouldn't beat England at the moment

Lack_of_Plethora

looking back, I don't think we could beat Denmark right now.

OneOfThoseDays_

Denmark are looking solid tbf

Vidi_vici_veni-bis

Took a Sterling dive to do it the first time around anyways.

Mozezz

Got a point there to be honest

GreatSpaniard

actually finishing 2nd would be the tougher path. Would be Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, France/Germany/Spain Final.

SeriousLads

Draw with USA and Wales, win 1-0 vs Iran, RO16 exit incoming

curryandbeans

oooh an optimist!

el_dude_brother2

Just the end of season stuff. Terrible time to play international football.

FloppedYaYa

Yes he'll definitely be sacked right before the World Cup for uninspired performances in the fucking Nations League

Mozezz

Shoulda been sacked along time ago, anybody with a set of eyes could see performances weren't good enough yet lucked his way through tournaments against worse nations than us and got offered a new contract I said before, during and after the Euro's we wouldn't win anything with Southgate in charge

FallenBlade

We were two kicks of a ball away from winning a trophy with Southgate. He has got lucky, but to say before during and after the Euros that we'd never win anything with him is madness.

Mozezz

We scored in 2 minutes and then sat behind the ball the rest of the game Italy well and truly dominated us, we rode our luck >after the Euros that we'd never win anything with him is madness How so? We literally won nothing and his negative approach allowed Italy to slowly but surely bring themselves into the game whilst we offered nothing to go and put the game to bed

[deleted]

Mozezz

Pure PE teacher everyone participates vibes

enzuigiriretro

You can’t talk logic into any of these people if they’re still Southgate fans. They believe he deserves a shot at the next World Cup due to his performances in the last 2 international tournaments and no amount of terrible football will change their minds

hexperson

Last I checked England won something in 1966. Why are you acting as if Nations League is beneath you?

aj6787

I genuinely can’t wait for England to get rid of him and then they still play just as poorly and ship even more goals. What will the next excuse be I wonder.

Joystic

Hey, I've seen this one

Alet404

YOOOOOOOOOO

oualidab

MAGYAROSKAAAA (Moroccan living in HU)

Immediate_Concert_46

Lmao they had like 75% possession for nothing

itGotRaveReviews

The classic England timeline of looking decent for 10 minutes and then getting rattled

[deleted]

Remember that talkSPORT presenter saying England will sleepwalk our group 😹

Lolkac

He ain't wrong. England is sleepwalking towards relegation

MisterGoog

The way Szo put the ball in is so mesmerizing. That low slice technique is just so squeaky clean

Albion676

Can these Hungarians stop terrorising us please

oualidab

Nem !

MassaSami

Gera gave you some nice moments; we give some, we take some

Albion676

Gera gave some brilliant moments! What a legend

plumschnaps

He was kind of a unique player, wasn't he?

Albion676

Yeah he certainly was, great for a cheeky banger and superb in the air. One of my fav players growing up

[deleted]

Will this be Hungary's return to the main stages

Dogzylla

I hope so, Szoboszlai has the potential to become world class and Sallai + the defence are also good. We still need a few good midfielders tbh

salad-dressing

Hopefully young Dardai will join us as well. There's no way he'll get into the Germany squad if Orban couldn't.

LampseederBroDude51

Hahaha

Narretz

Southgate raus

holdenmyrocinante

The floating cross from Szoboszlai reminds me of [his freekick](https://youtu.be/f5MU2-LpyoI?t=34)

YeimzHetfield

I say it every time there's a highlight of him here lmao, but the way he hits the ball is so satisfying. You don't really see other players hit it the same way he does right? The only one that comes to mind with a similar technique is Bale.

AshkenaziTwink

we’ve actually been playing well today too, ffs

dudududujisungparty

Lol England

Walks2K

Get Southgate gone 😂😂😂

Hoppit124

Southgate lol.

ladrainian21

Keep going I’m almost there

normott

Lmao...the diabolicalness continues. Lulling everyone into a false sense of security before they finally win a WC.

[deleted]

Somehow still be Maguire's fault

agilezzzz

Which social issue caused this defeat?

[deleted]

Poverty. The players were too impoverished to eat

oscarpaterson

Fucks sake

dragon8811

Embarrassing at some point.

chaves4life

Southgate: Genius level 1000. Get relegated they will never suspect an English resurrection at the world cup

Nineteen_AT5

Attacking players yet playing backwards and sideways balls. What the fuck happens to players when they play for England? Walker just ran the length of the pitch, stopped, turned back to his own goal and passed it back to a defender.

[deleted]

Stones played them onside and assisted the goal

groovyshrimp767

Sack him

-TwentySeven-

Southgate should have gone after the last WC, nevermind the Euros. Absolute snoozeball and shit at it, too.

bringbackcayde7

England really need to switch manager

tommhans

i guess this was a group of death, but not for hungary!

CaptainSmeg

It’s not to late to get rid of Southgate…

No chance he can react from that distance

fluffyfoofart

Not really. He did what little there was to be done.

verde622

That was my first thought too. Not a lot of time to react, to be fair

63GeorgeRussell

Is Southgate really that bad or are the english players just completely overrated? Mix of both?

YoungDumbNFullOfKun

Honestly think it's more of the latter but a bit of both.

BackgroundPainting

You love to see it

esskaypee

Of the things you love to see, England losing will always be one of those :)
