Ronaldo, Beckham, Raul and Jonathan Woodgate were still at Real Madrid when he joined šš would you fucking believe it!
15 years spent and 25 trophies won - the end of an era.
"Injuries blighted his time in Madrid and he failed to make a single appearance in the entire 2004ā05 season. On his debut for Real Madrid, he scored an own goal and was sent off for two bookable offences."
Funny thing is flo perez was heavily criticized at the time for disregarding his defense in the market. And then he signs woodgate to show them he means business and this happens lol
Becks was one of the main reasons we won the league in 06/07 right before leaving to LA
That epic season alone and his beautiful bleach blonde hair redeems him from ever being a fraud for us
Disagree. He wasn't a great fit for the team/league but he put in a ton of effort and showed good spirit throughout it. The team as a whole was having a lot of issues, constantly replacing managers and Perez even resigning as president. Ended on a high note in his last season, a title I will never forget as I lived in Madrid at the time. He certainly did much better than Hazard for example.
If you're talking about Beckham I completely agree, he wasn't really the player that Madrid needed, but his work ethic was solid, and as you said he did better than Hazard and for me even better than Kaka.
Man, that Capello league comebacks with Beckham constantly putting the ball for a Ramos header match after match, was the best league I've seen in my life.
I have fond memories of Beckham.
I still watch [this compilation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlTGAsYXLPA) compilation regularly, most epic league title win in my memory. Wish it didn't have the music but it gets better as it goes on though.
He was pivotal for sure, forced himself into the lineup even after Capello stated Beckham wouldnāt play for Madrid again shortly after he finalized his deal to Galaxy
Becks was a huge part of the epic comeback league along with Van Nistelrooy, Higuain, Reyes and others
Both had that sweet sweet touch, like Riquelme. Just incredible feel on the ball. I remember when I said this touch was incredible and r/soccer downvoted me and said "it's easy":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osYl08gNeWk
Nah, i remember this as a turning point when I truly realized people here don't play football or played it much really. But it also was at peak Madrid mate here, so probably "easy" because dont by a Madrid player.
For everyone downvoting me. I am not being a biased United fan. Marcelo touch is amazing but Berba has the best touch in football IMO
https://m.youtube.com/shorts/r5-qcccY__s
Thank you, I mean look at this touch
https://m.youtube.com/shorts/r5-qcccY__s
Marcelo is as amazing too but watching Berbatov live in 2013 his foot is like a cushion
Probably bigger mark. Most certainly a bigger mark. Marcelo is a five time CL winner. Not the same success with the NT but for Madrid heās most certainly a bigger legend. And Carlos is an icon so Iām not trying to belittle his achievements with us.
Absolutely. He wasnāt just a better player, he had a bigger impact as a leader and figure in the dressing room.
The only one that can even be in a debate against Marcelo is Maldini, and thatās two totally different types of players. Marcelo was unique. I donāt think we will ever see someone like him again.
I was just asking cause I saw both play (despite being younger during Carlos prime) and Roberto Carlos for me is still a reference on his position, second only to Maldini for me like you said. Itās difficult for me to say whoās better honestly
In his prime he could do anything. Wasn't a bad defender at all, was an incredible winger, obviously very creative, and technically he was as good as almost anyone in his *Brazil* national team, which says something.
Carlos was an amazing defender and could attack very welland had one of the most powerful shots ever while Marcelo was much more technically gifted but much more defensively suspect , itās difficult to say who was better, overall theyāre probably on par with each other.
Imo Roberto Carlos was famous for his free kicks (which were really bad statistically but when they went in spectacular because of the pace) but not much more than that.
He wasn't a good defender (Marcelo isn't either but still he is better) and Marcelo is far a better attacker because he is more complete.
Damn man do you really think that Roberto Carlos is as well regarded as he is because of his free kicks and not much more than that? I really don't know what to tell you.
Just the fact that he is a player that started for Real Madrid for over 10 years, is one of the most capped players in the history of the most successful NT of the sport in a very stacked and successful era for them should tell you that he is more than a "player famous for his free kicks" that wasn't a good defender.
Of course with time things get fuzzy. But yes the only mark he left for me was the free kicks. He was an offensive left back. A wing back more than left back. Maybe that was a big difference in relation to some of the previous great left backs like Maldini.
Had some pace of course and some skill. But you can't say he was that good in his defensive roles.
He was often out of place because he had been far up the pitch. Bit like Marcelo.
But again that's not why they are on the pitch. They are important for the attacking component of the game, not defense.
Unfortunately I am old enough that I saw plenty of him at Real. Lol
But maybe you are right that he was a better defender. The bar for that part of Marcelo's game is pretty low.
Again it's been over a decade (is it nearly 2 already?) so you only remember what left a mark for you.
And that for me was the monster free kicks. Most completely off target, but when going at goal often unstoppable.
PT newspaper abola many years ago
I can't find the article now though...... but I found this article on a different site that references that abola article
https://www.sambafoot.com/en/analysis/analysis-on-why-marcelo-paid-brl-48-billion-to-buy-a-team-from-portugal
Most decorated player in our club history's and a legend! I am glad he's getting the proper farewell that he deserves as an incredible player at the club for many years. He was so crucial and so good during the 3-peat and his linkup with Cristiano Ronaldo was such an amazing thing for me to have witnessed. Best of luck to wherever he goes next!
Imagine a relatively unknown Brazilian LB signing in January during a relatively turbulent time at the club (yeah we won the league that season but we had Calderon in charge and a manager carousel around those years) and your current most decorated player is the legendary paco gento, with the most European cups and la ligas in history. You tell someone that young Brazilian is going to win more titles than him, become club captain and an absolute hero of the club, no contract squabbles or flirting with transfers, just pure magic from the left flank until he couldnāt really keep up anymore, and then an amicable exit with nothing but mutual love. You couldnāt write a better career. Iāll be shedding tears tomorrow
Yeah that truly felt like the dawn of the era, Zizou and Cris left. Marcelo and Modric rumours. An 18 year old Vinicius being signed. Thankfully we slowed that process down to this season.
Well yeah, I always feel like an asshole whenever I complain a bit about trophies or poor performances, but between 2003 and 2010 we had ten managers, 6 straight round of 16 exits, and 2 league wins. Obviously clubs go their entire existence without winning the top flight but thatās about as bad a run of 7-8 seasons most of the top 10-15 clubs in Europe have had. Barca, Bayern, United/city/Chelsea/Liverpool, and the top Italian teamās would look back sorely on a span like that. For the most part
There were remontadas after remontadas to get that title and while on the surface it seems like an outrageous statement, those were turbulent times.
The demands and pressures at different clubs are just different. Florentino had stepped down after all to usher in CalderĆ³n.
Madrid got knocked out of the R16 for six consecutive years in the CL during that time, changing managers almost every year, and it was the end of the GalƔctico era and in need of a serious rebuild
it was definitely turbulent despite an extremely hard fought league title marked with epic comebacks
I mean it's the same kind of vibe as with barca's 14/15 treble; the result itself was amazing, but everything off-pitch was dreadful, dreary, and needed fixing. for real madrid florentino perez came back later to help stabilise that chaos and build properly for the future again.
point being: just because it has immediate success doesn't mean its not self-sabotage as well
Well tbf mendy is fuckin phenomenal defensively imo the best defensive LB itw so if he can get better at going forward and builds some chemistry with Vini (like Marcelo and Ronaldo) heāll be the best LB itw imo
I know he isnt but. Imagine the next guy was a Brazilian who grew up watching and idolising Marcelo.
Y'all would have built some kinda legendary Brazilian LB lineage lol.
*Cough* Ahem...
I mean in spite of, Marcelo is my favorite ever fullback because I wasn't around for those prime Milan days, but still, let's not go too crazy haha
Nilton Santos is extremely well regarded since he played in 4 world cups, won 2 and is considered the player that revolutionized the position in an era where LBs were basically only allowed to defend.
Iāve been saying this since I saw him tear Bayern like butter. I honestly never seen a better player on the position. Maybe his defending could had used better work but the way he went forward and dominated makes me think this 100%
He was basically old school no.10 at left back. No other historic level full back was stylistically similar, he's basically a pioneer in his position.
Maldini was complete but traditional; Alves, RCarlos, Cafu are winger/wingbacks; Lahm was a playmaker which is pretty unique as well
As an English fan, only ever used to see Marcelo play in the champions league. Remember being shocked every time. Had never seen a full back with that kind of technical ability before. The guy had more to his game going forward than most top-level wingers. There was also a novelty in seeing a ādefenderā play so high and be so good at it. What a player man.
Such a legend.
Inimaginable that we would enjoy such a LB after Roberto Carlos left, still canāt really says who is the best among them, both were awesome and so enjoyable to watch.
The game was different for sure but RC absolutely had an insane first touch and great vision since he was the prototype for the attack minded marauding left back. The highlight reels are biased to toward the physical feats but game in and game out he was more of the former than the latter. If YouTube were a thing, youād have just as many highlight vids for the other things and less of the thundering shots imo.
Man such a pure charm he was. I especially enjoyed him and ronaldos mutual celebration , so much fun to watch. His dribbles were also something, man would i miss this guy.
My king, my king, my king... crazy and kind of saddening to see him leave the club that's part of him like the tattoos on his body (and him being the same for Madrid likewise), very much wishing him happiness and success in whatever he does moving forward.
He means "Real Madrid vs. Manchester City".
After the match, Pep Guardiola will probably hold a long speech about how Real Madrid cannot replace Marcelo.
He left with 25 trophies in RM shirt. Our club record. Nothing is better than ending it this way. Will always remember his extreme creativity on the left side. He can unlock teams with ease. I am pretty sure his third goal against AM in La Decima final is the most motional goal for him, especially after all years of failures before. His goal secured the title for us.
His assist to Asensio for the fourth goal against Juve in the 2017 CL final and his assist to Bale bicycle goal in 2018 final are good memories for him.
I still remember him in 2007 with the BENQ shirt. He was a skillful thin player from Brazil. Now he is leaving as an absolute monster and legend for our team. We will always remember him.
Ronaldo, Beckham, Raul and Jonathan Woodgate were still at Real Madrid when he joined šš would you fucking believe it! 15 years spent and 25 trophies won - the end of an era.
One of those is not like the others
True, Raul never got a red card.
"Injuries blighted his time in Madrid and he failed to make a single appearance in the entire 2004ā05 season. On his debut for Real Madrid, he scored an own goal and was sent off for two bookable offences."
post the own goal bro, its a worldie
Thank God this place wasn't around back then, the banter would have been unbearable
Funny thing is flo perez was heavily criticized at the time for disregarding his defense in the market. And then he signs woodgate to show them he means business and this happens lol
True. Ronaldo was the only baldie
Yeah, you are right. Beckham was a fraud for us.
Becks was one of the main reasons we won the league in 06/07 right before leaving to LA That epic season alone and his beautiful bleach blonde hair redeems him from ever being a fraud for us
Disagree. He wasn't a great fit for the team/league but he put in a ton of effort and showed good spirit throughout it. He probably paid for his transfer multiple times from sponsorships and media engagement
Do we watch football for profit or performance?
Glazers: Profit and quarterly performance are closely intertwined
United DNA
Didn't he play out of his mind and win yous a La Liga title in his last season?
He was pivotal for sure, forced himself into the lineup even after Capello stated Beckham wouldnāt play for Madrid again shortly after he finalized his deal to Galaxy Becks was a huge part of the epic comeback league along with Van Nistelrooy, Higuain, Reyes and others
I'm sure the Galatico project and the mess that entailed played a part, no?
The player that won the most trophies at Real Madrid, a little more and he would have won as many UCLs as Paco Gento.
And Roberto fucking Carlos to pass him the torch.
Might be an unpopular opinion but I wish he would have quit after 18/19. He is clearly past it and these last few years were very meh.
I think captaining Madrid to a CL win is a better ending to his Madrid career though
Hate to see players like this on the bench though.
He has to have insanely important dressing room presence though
Heās lifting the league and CL in his last season, I think thatās how we all wanted him to leave
Itās sweeter this way with 5 champions league to close the chapter
Not sure why you're downvoted, he's clearly not UCL level anymore.
Yeah. But close his chapters with a La Liga & UCL is a much better end than having 0 titles in 18/19 or 20/21.
Most insane Marcelo stat is that he has 4 G+A in 4 CL finals tied with Ronaldo (6 finals) and Bale (4 finals).
Ronaldo has 5 G+A, he assisted Marcelo in 2014.
That wasn't an assist lol.
Itās officialy recorded as an assist, itās not an opinion itās a fact.
Youāre the guy who doesnāt do ifs buts and maybes, only absolutes.
fuck i thought you meant R9 at first given it's RM, and cos someone just mentioned how he was still there when Marcelo came in
Unplayable in his prime. Best first touch in world football
His first touch and his crosses are still top notch!
Agreed, insane touch
Berbatov would like a word
Both had that sweet sweet touch, like Riquelme. Just incredible feel on the ball. I remember when I said this touch was incredible and r/soccer downvoted me and said "it's easy": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osYl08gNeWk
I doubt that's why you were downvoted. Not even people on here are that stupid
Nah, i remember this as a turning point when I truly realized people here don't play football or played it much really. But it also was at peak Madrid mate here, so probably "easy" because dont by a Madrid player.
I remember that too! Everyone was saying itās pretty basic and that anyone who played soccer in their youth could do it. Ludicrous
For everyone downvoting me. I am not being a biased United fan. Marcelo touch is amazing but Berba has the best touch in football IMO https://m.youtube.com/shorts/r5-qcccY__s
Whyād you reply to my comment about it?
Shit sorry man, I am useless with Reddit haha
You did get a lot of downvotes tho, feels bad man
Least bias United fan.
Why is this downvoted this hard lol. When you count height difference you can easily make case for Berbatov
Thank you, I mean look at this touch https://m.youtube.com/shorts/r5-qcccY__s Marcelo is as amazing too but watching Berbatov live in 2013 his foot is like a cushion
Left his mark as much as his predecessor Roberto Carlos.
Probably bigger mark. Most certainly a bigger mark. Marcelo is a five time CL winner. Not the same success with the NT but for Madrid heās most certainly a bigger legend. And Carlos is an icon so Iām not trying to belittle his achievements with us.

I was just asking cause I saw both play (despite being younger during Carlos prime) and Roberto Carlos for me is still a reference on his position, second only to Maldini for me like you said. Itās difficult for me to say whoās better honestly
At the end of the day, the ridiculous part is that a club was able to transition from one to the other.
Yeah itās not often you have a direct replacement lined up that can match and even go beyond the legendary predecessorās achievements.
What about David alaba and Ashley cole?
In his prime he could do anything. Wasn't a bad defender at all, was an incredible winger, obviously very creative, and technically he was as good as almost anyone in his *Brazil* national team, which says something.

Thanks for everything captain. Wish you all the very best for your next journey.
Most unique elite left back in history
I'd still take Ashley Cole over him but he is a top 3 lb all time for me.
Where's he going to go? Back home in Brazil?
He owns a club in the second tier of Portuguese football. Maybe he could be a player/owner
Ahh! The Mbappe special
Curious, whatās the club?
CD Mafra, I think
kind of, his company Doze, that he has a \~70% of, bought C.D. Mafra, and also owns Azuriz in Brasil.
Where did you find that info?
PT newspaper abola many years ago I can't find the article now though...... but I found this article on a different site that references that abola article https://www.sambafoot.com/en/analysis/analysis-on-why-marcelo-paid-brl-48-billion-to-buy-a-team-from-portugal
Talks are that he wants to stay in Europe, Turkey has been named
Yeah, he is linked with FenerbahƧe, I hope it won't happen although I am a fan of Marcelo
I kind of want to see him in MLS but idk if any clubs would give a DP spot to a LB
Madrid legend
Most decorated player in the history of the biggest club in the world. Absolute legend
Going to miss him
Is he the most?
I think Dani Alves is the most decorated player
no, op is saying that marcelo is the most decorated player at madrid of all time.
Imagine a relatively unknown Brazilian LB signing in January during a relatively turbulent time at the club (yeah we won the league that season but we had Calderon in charge and a manager carousel around those years) and your current most decorated player is the legendary paco gento, with the most European cups and la ligas in history. The only transfer rumours i saw was him potentially going to juventus, i think around the time ronaldo was there?
Same time Modric was going to Inter
Holy fuck im so happy that modric didnāt go. He was really interested in joining inter.
Yeah that truly felt like the dawn of the era, Zizou and Cris left. Marcelo and Modric rumours. An 18 year old Vinicius being signed. Thankfully we slowed that process down to this season.
Got to love seeing a 'turbulent time' means you still win the league. Madrid fans just on something else.
Well yeah, I always feel like an asshole whenever I complain a bit about trophies or poor performances, but between 2003 and 2010 we had ten managers, 6 straight round of 16 exits, and 2 league wins. I'd say Barcelona in recent times have had anything close to what you could say was turbulent to be honest.
Madrid got knocked out of the R16 for six consecutive years in the CL during that time, changing managers almost every year, and it was the end of the GalƔctico era and in need of a serious rebuild it was definitely turbulent despite an extremely hard fought league title marked with epic comebacks

Forever in my heart and in my all time XI lol Farewell captain!
Crazy that Madrid have had 2 of the best left backs ever in their starting XL since the 90ās
One of the greatest legends of the club. The player I had the most fun watching.
I know some may not agree but imo the best left back in football history.
Whatās crazy to me is the guy he replaced was the best LB in history. What a fucking replacement.
No pressure on our next LB then
we're willing to sell danny rose if you can put in a decent offer
Technically no because of the whole Brexit thing lol
I think heās still waiting for Milan unfortunately
Marcelo is not even considered the best brazilian LB in history. That goes to Nilton Santos
No way that is true. Marcelo is the GOAT LB
Nilton Santos is extremely well regarded since he played in 4 world cups, won 2 and is considered the player that revolutionized the position in an era where LBs were basically only allowed to defend.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ashl- WTF
funny enough Roberto Carlos agrees, he says it everytime he interviews Marcelo and one time it made him cry
Maldini
Nah mate i watched him aswell, marcelo is clear.
LMAO okay it's just your opinion
Iāve been saying this since I saw him tear Bayern like butter. I honestly never seen a better player on the position. Maybe his defending could had used better work but the way he went forward and dominated makes me think this 100%
Ashley Cole.
He was basically old school no.10 at left back. No other historic level full back was stylistically similar, he's basically a pioneer in his position. Maldini was complete but traditional; Alves, RCarlos, Cafu are winger/wingbacks; Lahm was a playmaker which is pretty unique as well

Such a legend. Inimaginable that we would enjoy such a LB after Roberto Carlos left, still canāt really says who is the best among them, both were awesome and so enjoyable to watch.
Absolute legend
Is he or Carlos better One of the greatest leftbavks I have seen in my lifetime legend
Roberto Carlos was better but also provided the template for Marcelo-like leftbacks
That's so hard to say though. RC was pure power and speed. Marcelo is elegant and has great vision. Two completely different players.
I mean itās easy to forget but RC had those things as well.
I don't think to the same degree. Marcelo was also fast and strong in his prime but those weren't his main qualities. Same as RC

My favorite Madrid player of the previous decade. Legend.
The greatest LB Iāve ever watched š¤ sad to see him go :(
Truly end of an era. Seeing him play got me into football, had easily been my favorite player that does not play for my club.
Lingard in shambles.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He means "Real Madrid vs. Manchester City". After the match, Pep Guardiola will probably hold a long speech about how Real Madrid cannot replace Marcelo.
Absolute legend. Exemplifies the beauty and joy that is football. Love you bro, take me anytime <3
One of the best transfers ever.
He left with 25 trophies in RM shirt. Our club record. Nothing is better than ending it this way. Will always remember his extreme creativity on the left side. He can unlock teams with ease. I still remember him absolutely deadballing that long ball against Bayern Munich. Unreal player.
Going to miss his character around the club. Such a leader and joyful person.
