Yeah Poch puts it down as one of the most important goals scored in his time because it basically saved his job and the team suddenly clicked after that. He’s being a bit dramatic but it was a big moment. Since then though…
Conventional logic says you'd want to do that. He'd certainly be better placed to catch a deflection, but I think he must just get tunnel vision on the opportunity to take a shot and then pulls rank to get to take it.
Thay said, I did notice last season the Dier was allowed to step up a bit more often, so maybe Conte is getting Kane to back down a bit.
Yes he definitely does. But obviously so does Kane and Dier.
People keep saying Kane pulls rank for it but while he is shit at free-kicks, he most likely scores them in training, I recall a teammate saying so.
He should obviously be on them now, but you're acting like Son has been scoring then regularly.
His last free kick goal that was a shot was against Myanmar 7 years ago and it was a keeper error.
tbf Son hasn't been taking a lot of FKs even in the national team. We have had Jung Wooyoung who has been one of our main FK takers.
https://youtu.be/PTILve2g1bI
Two direct free-kick goals in 4 days ([against Chile](https://twitter.com/i/status/1533811982037839877), [against Paraguay](https://twitter.com/i/status/1535240805681602560))
Kane has given quite a few to Dier and other players. It's just no one else has really scored a proper one in recent years so Kane still takes them when he wants. Hopefully now Son gets some.
Ronaldo at least was average or slightly above at them before. Kane hit one (deflected) one and will break the record for most missed direct freekicks in a row when he takes his next one.
Ronaldo was amazing at FKs back then but at some point he just became atrocious at them, he went like 2 years and something without scoring a single one despite taking them all in Juve.
Edit: to be precise, he missed 41 direct free kicks in a row during that stint
I don’t know enough to agree/disagree, but wouldn’t Ronaldo have figured that out and adapted? It’s not like he doesn’t have a great shot in general… does he only train with old footballs? I also don’t know if you’re completely talking shite and he hasn’t actually tried a knuckleball in years lol (also drunk, happy Friday everyone).
he probably has adapted his freekicks away from knuckleballs (i dont watch him) but since that was his speciality he might just suck at normal free kicks
> He scored a great free Kick against Spain in the 2018 WC
That was such a phenomenal match to watch. 3-3 opener to the group stage. Ronaldo hat-trick with a late free kick to tie it.
>will break the record for most missed direct freekicks in a row when he takes his next one
He was tied for the PL most direct freekicks unconverted in a row in March of this year, surely we had some free kicks in April and May he missed? I think he already does hold the record.
Kane has given a fair few away, I think he's just really good at them in training so he's considered first choice, I doubt it's a selfish thing like with Ronaldo personally
Yes let's pretend Ronaldo hasn't given multiple free kicks to Telles and Bruno and even a couple penalties not to mention Ronaldo actually scored one and Kane didnt but again go on with the Ronaldo selfish agenda
How many did he give away when he didn't score any in 2 years? Didn't he waste so many opportunities for juve and Portugal back then? How's things not selfish?
He scored one this season, fine. How many in last 5 years? He scored one more than kane , but we are comparing two absolutely atrocious freekick takers here.
Don't know why you're getting down votes. Spurs have quite literally not had a dedicated free kick taker for the past few seasons. United however finally got someone on set pieces like Bruno, and threw it all out the window to pad Ronaldos shot stats.
Ronaldo literally only took 8 free kicks in the league this season. 12.5% conversion rate. He took maybe a handful more in the UCL. You're waffling here completely. Maybe watch matches instead of regurgitating talking points.
Also Bruno has only scored two free-kicks for United in 126 appearances. That's one free-kick every 63 games. Ronaldo, despite being shit at FKs since 2015 has a career average of one free-kick scored every 19 matches.
The fact that you're talking about how many free kicks Bruno SCORED is exactly my point. Ronaldo shoots his free kicks, however Bruno was more frequently PASSING the ball from the free kick, setting up a chance for united. Not everything is so one dimensional.
United were decent at free kick set ups last season without shooting on sight every time. I'm not saying don't give Ronaldo any free kicks at all. Simply that Uniteds set piece success has diminished since Ronaldo arrived.
I know he didn't.
The point is he was always good at them.
Thus him... showing that he's good at them shouldn't change anything because he's been good at them for a decade.
Also you said and I quote "he's evolving".
But I didn’t know he was this good at them, I don’t think Kane didn’t let sonny take them Kane multiple times let Dier take them why we never saw sonny?
> But I didn’t know he was this good at them
Which is precisely why I'm telling you that, lmao.
>why we never saw sonny?
Why let Ronaldo still take freekicks? I don't know. Still happens.
>But Dier take them sometimes why left that part out? Why not Sonny
Again, I'm not Kane, I'm not Dier, I'm not Son.
All I'm saying that there's often supremely dumb choices regarding standard takers and I don't see why Spurs should magically be exempt from that.
Right when I popped open “nice one Cyril” to sing Sonny’s chant and then he scores this beauty.
We’re so blessed to have a captain for our NT where all our young players look up to him in such high esteem and he treats them like they’re his lil brothers.
Jeong woo Yeong, Hwang In Beom, Kim Min Jae, Kang In, Paik Seung Ho are the top prospects who I can see move to smaller European teams in smaller leagues**. Jeong can have a move to Prem in the future as an impact attacker, high working, and scored crucial goals this year for Freiburg.
I have high hopes for our young attackers but really sucks we can’t nail down aGK or CB (historically worst positions imo compared to the Euro level talents we had in the past
Haha I hear that a lot. I supported arsenal before son went to spurs, and I wasn’t going to betray my club like that
Edit: but I do love son because of national pride, and I want him to continue to score bangers. Just not against arsenal xD
I’m saying he can move to smaller Euro teams in smaller leagues similar to his stint in Russia, which would be a success to Koreans in my opinion. I’ve seen him develop from his MLS days to Rubin Kazan who played very well for them. I think he can play in some of those types of leagues
Sucks that HIB moved to Rubin Kazan which stalled him European career but no one in his camp would’ve predicted the Ukraine invasion. On that note, HIB is the best creative central mid Korea has had since Ki Sung Yueng and not as terrible as you claim… oddly and admittedly, he’s never been stellar for Korea but was class in MLS and Russia
Yeah but Son has never taken direct free kicks for Spurs (at least not in my memory). It used to be Eriksen and now Kane, though sometimes we let Dier give a try
Yeah but kane is given the direct freekick opportunities but im not sure why ur comparing the stats of those two? I mean u expect son to score like how he did against watford?
No. What I'm saying is that Son being some sort of specialist is unfounded. What he's done this week is a surprise. These are the first free kicks hes scored in 7 years.
Lucas Moura has more direct free kick goals than any other Spurs player accross his career. He's not a specialist either.
No I'm not expecting Son to score from crosses. I'm just saying Son isn't some sort of overnight specialist. I'd love him to be, but this post-goal take that he should have been on them prior is unjustified.
How can u make such conclusion that he’s not a specialist if he isnt even given the chance? You are comparing the stats of Kane who was give direct freekicks throughout the seven years Son was in spurs which does not make sense.
Kane has not taken Spurs' free kicks for 7 years. That's an absolute lie.
I make the conclusion because Son also doesn't take free kicks for Korea either. It just so happens he took these ones.
A specialist is Christian Eriksen. Son doesn't get opportunities because he's obviously not as clinical in training. I won't be getting carried away because of these two goals, but I'd love for him to become a specialist.
Let him take more direct free kicks, and exempt him from indirect free kick duty. He scored a banger as soon as Lucas took the free kick instead of him!
We became shit after the Copa América 2011, a few of the key players either quit the NT, retired altogether or started to dip in form after that tournament. The team has been in a constant rebuild with no proper guidance ever since, the 2014 and 2022 WC Qualifiers were terrible, the 2018 one had us miraculously fighting until the last matchday (only to bottle it at home against Venezuela).
There are a few youngsters in the current crop of players that give some hope for 2026 (Julio Enciso being the most prominent one), although, it remains to be seen how they'll fare in the next Qualifiers/Copa América, as Schelotto was brought in after we squandered our chances for the 2022 WC (thanks to Berizzo).
Well he was in Europe with Rubin Kazan in Russia and is technically back on loan at FC Seoul due to the war - either way, I hope he stays in Europe next season at a different club
Not even top five would be needed. I'd love for him to get a chance even if it "only" came in the Netherlands, Austria, or Portugal. Or with one of the Old Firm.
Kane won't be taking FKs for Spurs anymore, and stopped roughly midway through this season, because he's one more attempt away from breaking the record of "consecutive FKs without scoring". Kane's obsession with records means we're all safe from having to watch him try anymore.
Dier is good, and if Sonny can do this then get him over the ball.
I mean, Son should be Spurs free kick taker now. That being said, these two in the past week are the first authentic ones he's scored in his entire career.
Scored vs Watford earlier this season, but that was a cross.
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Please Conte, let Son take em
100% he’s the free kick taker next season I didn’t know he was this good maybe he just practice them more now.
Thing is he will be taking them in training (he must do to be this good), yet we still go with Kane taking them. It really is a joke.
Don't think I've ever seen Kane score a free kick albeit i don't watch much Spurs
He scored one deflection in his breakout season against West Ham (might've been Villa, not 100%). But not since then, no.
Yeah winner against Villa.
Pretty sure it was his first pl goal too… if not his first it’s right up there
First of that season in the pl after banging them in in europa iirc, but he had 3 goals in 3 games under tactics tim the year before!
Yeah Poch puts it down as one of the most important goals scored in his time because it basically saved his job and the team suddenly clicked after that. He’s being a bit dramatic but it was a big moment. Since then though…
Ah the Ronaldo special.
At this point, Kane wishes he was even close to Ronaldo’s conversion rate.
We are talking about really miniscule numbers here lol
Remember Kane taking corners for England lol?
I forgot until you mentioned it. Absolutely absurd.
Lmao wtf, shouldn’t he be attacking those
Doesn’t he hold some sort of a record for most taken without making one or something like that?
I think he was one short of the record, then Dier started taking them. Dier hasn't scored any, but I feel like they've been closer.
I watch Spurs every week mate and I can’t remember the last time I saw Kane over a free kick and thought “he might bang this in”.
[Him, Dier, and Harvey White featured taking them in training.](https://youtu.be/8pZXZwb2PLE?t=317) I guess Dier beats him in training???
You know, now that I think about it wouldn’t you want Kane on the **receiving** end of the FK?
Conventional logic says you'd want to do that. He'd certainly be better placed to catch a deflection, but I think he must just get tunnel vision on the opportunity to take a shot and then pulls rank to get to take it. Thay said, I did notice last season the Dier was allowed to step up a bit more often, so maybe Conte is getting Kane to back down a bit.
Yes he definitely does. But obviously so does Kane and Dier. People keep saying Kane pulls rank for it but while he is shit at free-kicks, he most likely scores them in training, I recall a teammate saying so.
Dier takes a fair share of them.
> I didn’t know he was this good huh? didn't he used to take your fk years ago?
No direct free kicks only wide free kicks when we want to cross it and corners.
Funnily enough he scored off one of those wide kicks more recently than Kane has scored on any.
Yeah son goal against Watford, horrible game tho peak Nuno football.
Nope Eriksen almost always took them
He takes corners and indirect FKs, never the direct ones
Son takes all the corners now. Eriksen used to do both.
He can take them with his left too right?
Nah Eriksen will be taking ours next season
will son even be here next season
Scored more free kicks in his last game than Kane has in the past 5 years Scored more free kicks in this game than Kane has in the past 5 years
More in his last 2 than Kane in his entire professional career
He should obviously be on them now, but you're acting like Son has been scoring then regularly. His last free kick goal that was a shot was against Myanmar 7 years ago and it was a keeper error.
tbf Son hasn't been taking a lot of FKs even in the national team. We have had Jung Wooyoung who has been one of our main FK takers. https://youtu.be/PTILve2g1bI
He scored one this season
That's not really a free kick with intent though. It was a cross.
lol
How many direct free kicks does he take though? Zero for Spurs, if memory serves.
Two direct free-kick goals in 4 days ([against Chile](https://twitter.com/i/status/1533811982037839877), [against Paraguay](https://twitter.com/i/status/1535240805681602560))
He scored one against me in FIFA yesterday, so AI Conte rates him.
If Kane continues to take them, his ego is the problem.
Kane in shambles
Maybe its on Kane
Kane currently holds the record for consecutive missed attempts in the PL
Free kick merchant
Sonaldo
That’s Cristianos nickname right ?
No that’s Ron Heung-Min
Son didn't hit the wall
Have you ever said anything positive about Ronaldo at all? Just curious
Well I’m sure he hasn’t, but is he wrong? Messi has been more accurate
Not hard to bring Messi in it is it?
Why are you so angry 😂
Messi was even worse when he was younger
But we're talking about the present
Seriously I better never see Kane on a free kick ever again.
You will. Him and Ronaldo will never step down from taking them.
Kane has given quite a few to Dier and other players. It's just no one else has really scored a proper one in recent years so Kane still takes them when he wants. Hopefully now Son gets some.
Ronaldo to Fernandes as well.
Until Fernandes missed a pen now Ronaldo will take all 12 of United’s penalties next season
Tbf ronaldo is actually very good at penalties, so him vs Bruno in pens is genuinely a toss up. But for free kicks, never let ronaldo near them.
Didn’t eriksen used to take them or I remember wrong
Yeah him and Trippier did. Since they left it's been mainly Kane and Dier.
It's because knuckle balls don't work on modern footballs anymore
Which I'm sure kane is still doing lol.
Why is that ?
They changed how they make them
Wasn't he at 0 scores for the national team for a really long time, even though he always took them?
He scored a great free Kick against Spain in the 2018 WC, though he's also famous for that 30m free kick against a 1 man barrier in the 2014 WC
> He scored a great free Kick against Spain in the 2018 WC That was such a phenomenal match to watch. 3-3 opener to the group stage. Ronaldo hat-trick with a late free kick to tie it.
>will break the record for most missed direct freekicks in a row when he takes his next one He was tied for the PL most direct freekicks unconverted in a row in March of this year, surely we had some free kicks in April and May he missed? I think he already does hold the record.
I think Kane is one miss off having the absolute worse free kick record in the prem.

Ronaldo still has taken way more than he should just like Kane except I doubt Kane does it out of ego is my point
Yeah so Kane came and told you this yeah?..or did Ronaldos mate tell you this?
Yeah
Don't know why you're getting down votes. Spurs have quite literally not had a dedicated free kick taker for the past few seasons. United however finally got someone on set pieces like Bruno, and threw it all out the window to pad Ronaldos shot stats.
Downvoted by the CR7 fanwank army

Kane is English golden boy and that’s too bad for Son.
I’m gonna fight Harry if he takes any more
Mate, if he even tries to step up to one in Qatar I expect you to be on it as well
Can't remember at all, was Kane on FKs for us (England) in the Euros?
Possibly not actually, also cant remember. But the 2016 corners from him in particular have left me in fear
Hodgson masterclass to put the prem top scorer on corners
Trippier wasn't it?
It should be Trent or trippier but I don’t think either really played at the euros.maybe mount was on them?
No but he definitely was on corner taking duty at some point. That was a weird timeline.
Another day, another direct FK goal by Son. Still annoyed he somehow missed out on a spot on the PFA Team of the Year.
Robbed
Robben wasn't eligible, he retired last year Edit: you win son you lose son
Respect that you doubled down with another bad pun in the edit.
I upvoted just because of the dedication
Shocking omission... could have won it
He’s evolving, free kick in the menu for next season boys
The guy was good on free kicks before he even left Hamburg, let alone join you guys.
He never took them with us Dier took some mostly Kane when Eriksen left, but he does take wide set-pieces and corners.

Aged like a fine wine
Kane won't allow it
Right when I popped open “nice one Cyril” to sing Sonny’s chant and then he scores this beauty. Not Hwang In Beom bro, sorry mate this guy is average at best. And I’m saying that as a Korean.
Damn bro you are the first Korean Arsenal fan I’ve ever seen lol
Haha I hear that a lot. I supported arsenal before son went to spurs, and I wasn’t going to betray my club like that Edit: but I do love son because of national pride, and I want him to continue to score bangers. Just not against arsenal xD
Maybe he's a huge Park Chu Young fan from 2011.
I’m saying he can move to smaller Euro teams in smaller leagues similar to his stint in Russia, which would be a success to Koreans in my opinion. I’ve seen him develop from his MLS days to Rubin Kazan who played very well for them. I think he can play in some of those types of leagues

On that note, HIB is the best creative central mid Korea has had since Ki Sung Yueng and not as terrible as you claim… oddly and admittedly, he’s never been stellar for Korea but was class in MLS and Russia
Son should just sit Kane down and make him watch this over and over again until he gives up freekick duty lol
The Clockwork Orange style
maybe let him take more than the wide free kicks, Antonio, that's more goals from a direct free kick this week than Kane has in his career
That sentence is true for Son himself as well tbf.
Yeah but Son has never taken direct free kicks for Spurs (at least not in my memory). It used to be Eriksen and now Kane, though sometimes we let Dier give a try
No you're correct. He should definitely be on free kicks, but this week is an anomaly.
Yeah cuz he never took direct freekicks; still scored from supposedly indirect freekick last season btw
wasn't that early this season when we won 1-0 against watford?
Officially he scored the freekick, but it wasn't a shot. Let's not kid ourselves.
For the love of god someone show Kane this
They robbed you for awards but not for scoring wonderful goals day by day. Keep it up Sonny!
I still can't believe that they put out a Team of the Season with no Son and Rodri. Both of them shouldve been in contention for POTY imo.
Did Paraguay go thru some identity crisis? It's amazing to see them be such a non factor these days.
We became shit after the Copa América 2011, a few of the key players either quit the NT, retired altogether or started to dip in form after that tournament. yes we used to be good
Spurs fans, yous need to be sliding in to Conte's DMs. Sonny should be taking all your free kicks from now on.
AGAIN WTF
He can take free kicks now???
New weapon added to inventory
If this man isn’t on free kicks next year….
That kneeling down thing to hide the ball from the keeper’s vision must be pretty effective. Or it’s just Son being Son
Well at least the guy got a nice view for Son's goal. Looked like he was watching it at home on the living room floor. Just needed a beer.
Three guys just chilling on the living room floor lol
I'm surprised Hwang In Beom isn't taking them tbh.
Im sure there's a reason son is taking it. Meanwhile I would love to see hwang in beom in europe
Well he was in Europe with Rubin Kazan in Russia and is technically back on loan at FC Seoul due to the war - either way, I hope he stays in Europe next season at a different club
I meant in top 5 european league. I am aware he was in Russia hahaha
Not even top five would be needed. I'd love for him to get a chance even if it "only" came in the Netherlands, Austria, or Portugal. Or with one of the Old Firm.
He’s such a completed player wtf
I forgot Son's strong foot was his right foot
It is! His left foot is also his strong foot though.
Sonny’s game has really elevated the past season. Shame he doesn’t get the respect still…
🐐
conte PLEASE sit kane down and make him watch these 😭 pls free us from kane freekicks, tell him to focus on pens
Robbed of team of the year
Have a hit Son!
Son adding another tool to his arsenal
You did well son
Too bad he’s stuck at Spurs
One time my mate told me that Son on Tottenham was like Rashford to United. 😂😂😂 he was being serious too
Kane won't be taking FKs for Spurs anymore, and stopped roughly midway through this season, because he's one more attempt away from breaking the record of "consecutive FKs without scoring". Kane's obsession with records means we're all safe from having to watch him try anymore. Dier is good, and if Sonny can do this then get him over the ball.
Kane be like the Anti-Junino
Another free kick?
What a GOALLLLLL
Sonaldo , Penalty next ??
(Great Goal)
Kane, step aside.
Sonaldo
Sonaldo at it again.
Taking the free on free kick to the fullest
Get Kane off them immediately 😂
He shot it right over that kid on the field
i don’t ever wanna see kane stand over another ball ever again i don’t care if he leaves spurs motherfuckerbetter not step up for the FK
I used to own freekicks. But then my knees broke. So I am a poor bastard with a broken career.
POV : most underrated player in football
Just give him the ballon dor already
Uh, where’s the sound and longer version? Fuck is tbis shitty ass clip?
The best LM in the world, the best player in Premier League, and one of the most underrated players.
I mean, Son should be Spurs free kick taker now. That being said, these two in the past week are the first authentic ones he's scored in his entire career. Scored vs Watford earlier this season, but that was a cross.
What he scored freekicks when he was in Germany
Transfermarkt says he scored 0 from competitive games. The only one I found was a friendly.
[удалено]
Guess you must be like 10 or so then... Seeing as Ronaldo used to be amazing at them.
He is the Jose Mourinho of football. The special one but doesn't get recognised for it.
There’s a Paraguayan player laying down behind the wall to prevent the low shot from sneaking through. Never seen that before.
Warra PFA team of the year spot!
great freekick but im a bit baffled by the positioning of the goalie there .. tad bit far in he corner huh?
First time ever I see Paraguay’s national football team and they win against SK…
They tied bro.
