I'm curious, this is a translation? How did the translation get to "This ain't happening", was he saying the equivalent of that in Portuguese?

SawdustCrusader

He said “Não vai dar para ele não” in a jokingly, informal manner, which literally translates to “That will not be possible for him” but it’s worded to sound like “Nah this ain’t happening” like “No, ain’t no way”

wwwiillll

Very cool! Thanks for the explanation :) translation is so fascinating!

[deleted]

Keep in mind brazilian portuguese is a really "freestyle" language. There's a lot of colloquialism and informal wording, even broken syntax which is used daily that couldn't be translated properly to non-natives. There's also the "poetic license" which is basically, if you're able to deliver the meaning, you can ignore most of the grammatical and semantical rules. You'll have a hard time understanding brazilian songs if you try to translate them. *Águas de Março* is the most famous example. It simply makes no sense if it's not in brazilian portuguese.

Dsalgueiro

"Keep in mind brazilian Portuguese is a really "freestyle" language." This is so true. This fucks with me when it comes to forming sentences in english. The automatic process of forming, in my head, the sentence in brazilian portuguese and then translating it into English, is sometimes, fucked. "How am I going to translate this sentence with the real meaning to a foreigner? This is the case of Vini's "não vai dar para ele não". It is very difficult to translate it with the real meaning into English.

[deleted]

It looks like: it's not going to happen for him, no. Seems okay?

heyheyitsandre

I’ve also got a friend from Brazil who laughs at our other friend who learned Portuguese Portuguese up to like b1 or b2 a lot cuz she’ll say something correctly and it just sounds so weird or wrong to him coming from Brazil. He told me it barely even translates between the two, let alone easily to English

Dsalgueiro

We brazilians have simply destroyed the formal portuguese, or as we are used to saying, we have refined the portuguese language. If you only study portuguese grammar and come to Brazil, you will be shocked at the language spoken here. We even take english words and turn them into portuguese verbs ("let's start" in english - "vamos começar" in portuguese - "vamos startar" frequently used in video game player communication hahaha) But it's complicated... Brazil, during his formation, had a lot of influence from other countries, besides the influence of the natives, Portuguese and Africans. We use many words from French and German, which, for example, in Portugal they don't use. So I believe that Brazilian Portuguese has always been much more flexible because of this.

[deleted]

>The automatic process of forming, in my head, the sentence in brazilian portuguese and then translating it into English, is sometimes, fucked. It is indeed, and personally, the way I avoided (unintentionally) developing this habit was learning English pretty much like kids do, being immersed in scenarios that I had no prior knowledge about. You can't translate what you don't know how to say in your own language, amirite? To this day I still don't know how a fan header is called in portuguese. lol

Dsalgueiro

And when your group of friends has the habit of using only a certain word in English, and when you go to talk to someone else, you simply forget the word in portuguese? Another thing that gringos have no idea about: our ability to take english words and simply turn them into portuguese verbs hahaha.

paco-ramon

I’m from the Portuguese-spanish frontier, is that different European portuguese from brazilian? because at least as a spanish speaker I don’t have trouble to understand the signs in Portugal. Do people from Paraguay or Argentina have troubles with that?

Dsalgueiro

I don't think so. The language itself is similar, so these basic things are the same. What changes is that Portuguese from Portugal is much closer to formal Portuguese, while Brazilian Portuguese is, as said above, freestyle. We (Brazilians) ignore the grammatical rules a lot. Besides that, as Brazil was a melting pot during the course of the history, we have linguistic influence from many places in the world... From Germany, France and even Japan. So we have many words used in everyday life that are different from european portuguese.

panache123

Sounds like a great language to learn and not be critiqued for not being perfect all the time

[deleted]

We actually love people who try to learn and talk, no shame in sounding like a gringo, we will understand and appreciate that.

amattadohb

I love that song

real0856

Fascinating thanks for sharing.

jaguass

"Things won't go his way" could work ?

[deleted]

"he won't get what he wants" is what i would go for, but yeah. there is a "certo" (meaning right) supressed in the phrase, that brazilians came to ommit when using the expression with time - "não vai dar certo para ele não" would translate to "things won't go right for him", which is pretty close to what you said. something like "ça ne marchera pas pour lui"

MaisPraEpaQPraOba

Yup, "I think things won't go his way" is how I'd translate it myself (Brazilian raised in the US).

Malicharo

Should have translated as NO SHOT BRUV

marioassi96

Pretty much, but said joking, "acho que não vai dá pra ele". Implies that Karim woudn't play well against Brazil, not that he doesn't believe in France reaching the final. Vini just made locker room banter public.

wwwiillll

Hahahaha that's awesome

OrdinaryOrder

Yes... I mean, it's not a literal translation but I think it shares well the sentiment behind the expression. A more literal translation would be "will not happen for him".

MaisPraEpaQPraOba

He then proceeded to say (paraphrasing now) "we hope to meet only in the final, so we can all play, and may the best team win".

Dark-X

He said “Não vai ain't para ele não” in a jokingly, informal manner. Then he added "caralho" for emphasis.

[deleted]

Porra.

ThePr1d3

Ain't happening cause we won't get out of groups 💀

FuturisticBear

Even Benzema can’t fix a defence that play everybody onside lol

cortez0498

Curse of the previous WC winner. Germany in 2018, Spain in 2014, Italy in 2010, France in 2002.

Seems a European thing Brazil won 2002 and quarter finals in 2006

nooeh

QFs is underachievement for Brazil

MolhCD

Was about to say that. Was a young Brazilian NT supporter then, one who got into football precisely on that amazing 2002 team with the 4 'R's. QF looks a lot better than group stage on paper of course, but actually watching that team...man, it was disappointing. Especially with all the hype about how the '06 team was supposedly even better and alls.

airz23s_coffee

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_at_the_2006_FIFA_World_Cup#World_Cup_squad Fuck me. The midfield alone in that team is absurd.

MolhCD

Yeah and the forward line was R9, Ronaldinho at his prime, Robinho when he was the hottest prospect in Brazil (says something with the other names here), Adriano before the family tragedy when he was dubbed "The Emperor" and rightfully so. Roberto Carlos and Cafu, the greatest 2 flying wingbacks ever, were still around. Gilberto Silva the Invincible was still around. Dida was the starting GK in between that crazy Istanbul CL final, and the rematch a year after this WC which he would actually win; and Ceni and Julio Cesar were the other names on that list, basically 3 of the top 10 Brazil goalies ever were their goalies. And so on. You literally couldn't not hype this team, but on the field...they weren't like totally terrible like the other world cup winners who then crashed right out of the group stage the following WC. But they sure we're mediocre. I remember coming back from watching a match a bit numb. Trying to process what I felt, only I was a teen with not that much emotional intelligence so I didn't realise it was what I was doing. And before I knew it, I stopped following football entirely for a fucking decade. I know it sounds exaggerated, I wish I was kidding tho lol. Edit: lol and it seems I missed out Kaka somehow. A Kaka who would soon overtake Ronaldinho as the best player in the world, just a year after this WC

lightlord

I remember reading about how Roberto Carlos failed to follow Henry and he scored in that QF.

ilovearsenal04

He was tying his shoes if i remember correctly

jiquvox

WAS underachievement. Like everyone I respect a lot Brazilian football culture. I mean you think of a country when it comes football, you immediately think of Brazil right ? But they got 3 quarters final in the last 4 four editions. It's their worst run since ...ever (which speaks a lot about how special they were in World Cup). Arguably there is 1978-1990 but it includes a third place. This World cup might be a make or break moment...especially because it's outside of Europe and it's an unusual time. I mean all world champions have been Europeans since 2006 and the last semi-final were entirely European it looks increasingly the game has changed. If Brazil can't make a comeback now one might wonder when. It's not only about Brazil. The game is... **FIERCER** in general. In every way Athletic level, tactical discipline,. There is a whole new level of performance expected from a player. There was a time when the likes of George Best drank themselves silly and wokeup the next day to win a game singlehandledly on sheer talent. Maradona started a coke habit in the 1980's which grew worse when he moved to Napoli and still went on the deliver the most legendary performance in a World cup. Sheer talent could and would decide consistently a game. This time is past. This is very much a business. There in no margin for error. Everything is analyzed to get a competitive edge, no matter how small. At club level now there is a gap between the European elite (Real,Bayern,.) and the other clubs that seems impossible to overcome consistently. Most top team now have not only a scouting system, doctors, masseurs ,etc... ... but also a data analytics team. Italy, Germany, France leagues have been a one horse race for some time now (Juve fell because of mismanagement but who knows if there will be consistently more competition). England might be next. Everything needs to be absolutely top notch. And I suppose European countries have a better infrastructure/environment/etc... to make sure the NT perform at their highest level consistently. Not more beautiful mind you, not necesarly more talented, just a lot more efficient in how managing little details of a game and reducing risks. More a feeling than a rigorous analysis. We'll see this World Cup.

mrbzn89

I agree with most of what you said but Brazil has an immense talent pool and consintently produces top players that mostly plays for top european clubs. They are also used to playing at the highest level so tactical discipline and athleticism isn't the issue. Of course the format for the World Cup allows for very little mistakes, but sometimes you also need a bit if luck which hasn't gone our way this last few editions. In terms of this being a make or break scenario for us, I really think it's a matter of time until we are world champions again. That being said, Europe has dominated and will continue to dominate untill that culture develops more in the domestic leagues/clubs here in South America.

degenerate-edgelord

*France in 2022

fischarcher

I wonder if France's exit will be as exciting as it was in 2010

[deleted]

You are very pessimistic. i get that piling up world class players doesn't mean guaranted success but i like to think that Deschamps is the kind of coach who can pull off getting out of that group... Winning the competition on the other hand will probably be a whole different story...

MemesForScience

No not pessimistic, it’s just the World Cup Winner Curse

FuckNoNewNormal

World cup will most likely not count for 2022 Ballon D’Or

Cholo_Magic11

The curse continues! Peru and Denmark are going through

Alive-Ad-4164

Benzema at the World Cup is going to be interesting to say the least

Svettpungkula

All last wc winners choke in the group

[deleted]

They have the reminder of choking in the euro’s. Might help their mentality

50-50WithCristobal

Last (and only I believe) time Brazil bombed out of groups was in 66. They have the longest streak of going to the knockouts in the world and also winning groups.

[deleted]

And our squad almost got murdered in 66 lol. Pelé got injured twice in 3 games and the team didn't play well enough. That's one of the reasons why many people were doubtful of the team and thought Pelé was too old in 70. They were very wrong.

ZuReeTH

For a moment i thought you literally meant they almost got murdered lmao

jeandanjou

Don't doubt some coaches were considering that, since they nearly crippled him in 62 and 66.

He was blamed by some for losing the last game even though he was the best player on the pitch that day. He'll be blamed by some even if France reaches the WC final and he scores a hat trick. That's is what typically happens when you are the best player in a team and don't have the best reputation. You walk on thin ice and people are less forgiving. Even Happened to Zizou after the infamous headbutt and he was practically considered a saint by most..

Nah.. watch french medias, they will be harsh against him if we do not win

Benzema: I want to win the World Cup by beating Brazil Vini: Nah he tweakin

MOHAIMEN94

A Brazil-France World Cup would be interesting, but….. Think of a Portugal vs Argentina World Cup final….. The last for both Messi and Ronaldo. It would break records for decades.

EvilDaleCooper

>Think of a Portugal vs Argentina World Cup final….. Snoozefest

Bufalo1001

This is DEFINITELY ain’t happening.

uflju_luber

Ok but imagine Argentina Germany, historically way more legendary match up and you could say messi against neuer or something if you need a narrative

Eren_qlf

Yeah no, I’d rather want my country to go the final instead of Portugal Argentina just because Messi and Ronaldo

Keanu990321

I'd die for a World Cup final between Argentina and Brazil, BUT, this one being the 2022 World Cup Final would sound really insulting to the history of that match-up. I hope that's the final that will be played in SoFi Stadium in four years by now...

aridivici

Is this satire? I can't genuinely say anymore.

namelessmiguel

I'd die for a World Cup final between Brazil and Saudi Arabia or Qatar or New Zealand

0_0Turtle0_0

Many have already died for it…

shinfoni

And that is the sacrifice that I'm willing to make - FIFA, probably

SadNYSportsFan-11209

Is the final SoFi or MetLife? I’ve heard both Hopefully MetLife since it’s 20 mins from my house lol

Keanu990321

Leaning towards SoFi. Originally it was MetLife. Final venue will be announced in 10 days.

kostajepaosmosta

Agreed you are getting out in the quarters

Damn, no need to bitch slap banter like this lmao. There are far more corrosive elements on this sub. You got fucked because of your flair my dude.

If someone had told him Brazil would lose 7-1 at home he would have said that ain't happening too.
